Building itself collapsed. Here it is as it happened. Major portion of this building just collapsed. Can we just show you right here . A huge portion of that building just came tumbling down. Wow. And we hope we hope there was no one in that vicinity. You see debris pouring out on to the street. We had two cameras that captured that very moment. Take a look at the second view. Watch out. As of now, we have not heard of any injuries or anyone missing. The smoke and flames were seen all over the east bay and San Francisco. Road closures in the area are still in effect. With that, good morning. Welcome to the 9. What a battle the firefighters had when they just rolled up to the scene at 4 30. Massive flames, swinging cranes, trying to evacuate people who were sleeping in neighboring buildings. What was interesting is i was here when the fire started. I heard the initial call come over the radios. They arrived and it was just smoke and they were check thanksgiving out. From like that it turned into a huge fire in like ten minutes. Right. And i knew something was wrong when you hear the firefighters on the radio start yelling. Right. And backing up. Get back. Yeah. We brought you a live briefing at the 8 00 hour. Crews had to take a defensive stance and it went to three alarms. Things went very quickly. Pam cook is looking into who owns the building. We will check in with pam in 30 minutes or so. We brought you video from our crews. Christien kafton and alex savidge have been at the scene for hours. Alex, youre talking to people who have been forced from their homes. We want to begin with Christien Kafton at the command post of the fire itself. Reporter yeah. Lets give you a live look first off so you can see what the status is at this time. Very active scene here. They are putting as much water on the fire as possible. They are trying to make sure it that they put as much water on the fire as possible. They want make sure it doesnt flareup and cause more problems. We have video from this morning of what the fire looks like. Sal, you said you were monitoring the progress. I was monitoring it as well. We were listening to it this morning. When we arrived on scene, we just saw major, major fire when we first arrived here. Hundreds of feet up in the air, sending embers and soot up into the air. A very dangerous situation. One of the Major Concerns that firefighters talked about when they arrived here was that crane. There was an unsecured crane. And at one point that crane began spinning around wildly, which posed a serious threat to everyone involved in that first response. The neighboring buildings had to be evacuated because of the crane. We talked to bi gie representatives and they mentioned when a crane takes on heat, it starts to swing. That was one of our Major Concerns fighting the fire. Reporter fortunately at this time the crane has not collapsed. We did see firefighters and First Responders talking with representatives from biggie, the crane company, trying to determine how stable the crane is, to determine how safe it is and what their next step should be. At this point in time it appears to be somewhat stable. One of the ongoing questions though is how this fire started. Firefighters are trying to work out an investigation to try to determine exactly how this fire started, especially in light the fact that have been at least two other major fires at apartment complexes under construction. Uction its just deemed to be under investigation currently. As you can imagine, were still in a position to put out the hot spots and ensure that we can get in there safely at some point and do an investigation. Reporter coming back to our live picture, you can see that, again, firefighters still working to get as much water on the fire as possible. George, if we can show the crane that has been the focus of so much attention this morning. The concern being that that crane could have collapsed. It appears to be at least for now somewhat stable. Fire crews on scene. Were expecting the next briefing as early as 11 00 this morning. We will continue to stay here at 23rd just to the southwest side of this fire to determine exactly when they will have the next press briefing. We will give you details as they find them and pass them on to us. From Christien Kafton, we will go a few blocks away to alex savidge who is in the area of valdez and grand avenue where the red cross is setting up an Evacuation Center at the nearby cathedral there. Alex. Reporter yeah. And morning to you guys good morning to you guys. They set up the shelter there at the cathedral. We are on grand avenue, right at valdez. You can see all of these people outside of the Apartment Building. This Apartment Building is called the grabbed grand. It is caddy corner to the building that caught fire this morning. Most of the people who were evacuated live inside of this building. There are about 240 units. The reason that everybody is over there is they thought they were going to be let back in a short time ago. Then they had growing concerns about the stability of the crane here at this construction site. They wanted to things out before they let people in. One of the residents came up and told me they were just told that they will be allowed to go back into their units temporarily, maybe for a few minutes to grab some of the things that they might need. It doesnt sound like they will be let in on a permanent basis any time soon. We will show you the video from this morning. Again, the big concern in terms of letting people back into the homes is the stability of that crane, that freestanding crane here at this construction site. Again, this was a frightening morning for a whole lot of people who live just across the street from where this fire started. They all had to evacuate. And we talked with some of the people who were forced out by the fire. They say it was certainly a chaotic situation. But everyone made their way out in an orderly fashion. We actually just had a drill about a month ago. So everyone was very orderly and it was good. I was impressed with the team. They did a good job. It was organized but there is a lot of people. 22 floors. To exit everybody and get everybody out, it was quite a few people in the stairwells. Reporter again, the building that caught fire this morning is a 7story Apartment Building that was under construction. It was in the midst of being built and it was set to open in early in february of next year. Called the alta waverly building. It had market rate Housing Units on top and commercial on the bottom floor. The cause is still under investigation. The fire has not been labeled suspicious by the Oakland Fire Department but they have arson investigators here as you would imagine. Speaking this morning with a member of the contracting company, the information that i got is that they did have Security Officers who were doing their regular walk around the perimeter this morning. And so they were here at this construction site, keeping an eye on the place when this fire started. They also have motion detectors here at this construction site. And i was told that one of those sensors did go off at about 4 45 or so this morning. So that may be one piece of evidence or an indicator of something that may have been going on at this construction site right around the time that the fire started. That will be all part of the investigation. Also we talked about this earlier this morning, guys, we are in the heart of the downtown oakland area, just north of downtown really. There are so many buildings around here with cameras. Cameras all over the place in this area. So you have to imagine that as arson investigators try to piece this together, they should have plenty of evidence, plenty of Surveillance Video to go through to see who may have opinion in the area when the fire broke out. Alex, people watching now may not have been watching mornings on 2 during the 5 00 hour when you were reporting live during the partial building collapse. Can you explain for our viewers what that was like being just feet away there. Reporter well, first of all from this Vantage Point where we were, were just one short block away from the fire. So my photographer chip and i could feel the intense heat from this fire. First and foremost. While we were live on the air and giving people live pictures i dont know if you can sneak the camera over there, chip. We will show you over here. Just down the street you can see how far away this shot is right here. A major portion, a whole side of the building, we heard a creaking, cracking sound and we glanced over to the left hand side and you could see a whole portion of this building came crashing down right into the middle of the street. And of course your first thoughts are, boy, i hope theres no firefighters anywhere in that have i sippity. They obviously had cleared everyone else out of the way. The firefighters in order to get water on the fire, they have to they have to be somewhat close to this thing. Obviously they know the dangers of the potential for collapse. So they were thankful leo owe thankfully they were all at a safe distance and no one was hurt. Your heart sinks initially with Something Like that. You glance over and see a huge chunk of the building falling down to the street and you hope no one is near there. Alex savidge, great job out there all morning long. Thank you for the report. People in the area near lake merritt have been sharing pictures on social media along with their well wishes for all of the firefighters who battled this, not only oakland firefighters. There were other agencies called in to help. Plenty of photos of the hundred plus foot flames coming from the building under construction. Sal, i know a lot of photos were being sent to you as well. Yeah. One of my twitter followers who lives up there near the macaque their area, kind macarthur area, kind of far way from the fire could see the fire. When you why driving into the work. Yeah. I was passing grand avenue exit and i could see it very clearly on my left hand side of the freeway. I fought every urge that i had to pick up my cell phone. It was a huge orange fireball. I will tell you i was mindful of traffic. There was a lot of unusual slowing. There was a lot of lookyloos. I drove by in the 5 00 hour. Now we are four hours later and this is what is left at the construction site. Fire crews still putting water on the smoldering. Unfortunately here we are a building with a lot of housing going to come up. Now were starting again from ground zero. So were going to hear more about that. Pam cook will tell us more about this troubling trend of fires coming up. Busy day. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, President Trump meeting with russian president putin. What he is saying about his sit down with the russian leader. We are what should i watch . Show me sports. Its so fluffy look at that fluffy unicorn hes so fluffy im gonna die your voice is awesome. The x1 voice remote. Xfinity. The future of awesome. Hansome scrambled eggs andt i pancakes. For . Lilly we got a craving go, go, go crashing cravings in the crave van jacks gonna crash your crave jack hey, guys. Try my jumbo breakfast platter with sausage or bacon, plus 8 mini pancakes, eggs and a hash brown for just 2. 99. Handballer 2 2. 99 . How bout we play you for it. Handballers oooooooh. Jack vo you crave it, we serve it. Try my 2. 99 jumbo breakfast platter. Crave van President Trump and president putin wrapped up their much anticipated meeting on the side lines there of the g20 summit in germany. This is the photo op following the first facetoface meeting. That is not the video. That is all the leaders there in a photo op that came together earlier. President trump said it was an honor to meet with the russian president. President putin and i have been discussing various things. I think it is going very well. Weve had some very, very good talks. Were going to have a talk now. Obviously that will continue. We look forward to a lot of positive things happening for russia, for the United States and for everybody concerned. And speaking through a translator, president putin said he was delighted to finally meet President Trump as well. Thousands of protesters have come to hamburg to protest the summit. Protesters marched towards the Downtown Conference Center where the World Leaders are gathering for a twoday meeting. The protesters are angry over economic inequality and a lack of action on climate change. Joining us live is political analyst brian sobel. A lot of expectations going into the g20 and the faceto face encounter between the two leaders. Would the topic of the 2016 election come up . That was a question that a lot of people were wondering. Somewhere it had to come up. Obviously it is causing a lot of problems for President Trump domestically and at some point in that meeting it had to have come up. But this is a very busy time. The g20, the group of 20, representing 85 of the Gross National product of the world. Thats why you have protesters there who are all getting together to talk about things. And it is a huge story. The president s speech in poland, another huge story. Very successful speech. So lots going on. People who dont know, why are these people protesting . Every time that the leaders meet like this, you see huge protests. What is at the heart of the protests. I think basically it is an opportunity to when everybody is gathered to make their point. And their point is theyre against industrialized nations, against oppression of the of the lesser nations in the world. Theyve got a whole agenda. And it is a mixed agenda. Global trade, climate change, syria and ukraine. In the states, facetoface with president putin is dominating the g20. Are we too concerned about the optics. The handshakes and the elbow touching. Yeah. It is distracting. Did he or did he not do well with america he will. How was the handshake with putin . Did the first lady of poland not shake Donald Trumps hand for long enough. It just goes on and on and yet were not focusing on the substance. That i think that is worrisome. You talked about 85 of the gpd. Do you think countries the United States always appeared to be kind of the leader when it comes to global trade. Do you think that countries are looking at them selfs and going do we really need why cant we be aligned with the u. S. Maybe we take the lead when it comes to trade in the world. There is an assessment process going on around the world with the new president. It happens with every presidency. Each country is taking stock of the mix. You made me think of something. President trump was said to be unpredictable. How much does that factor into how the World Leaders are going to try to get to know him and see where he is heading on certain issues. It is a good point. When you dont know somebody, you have to take time to understand what their motives are. In that, there may be an advantage for the president because, for example, the putin meeting, this is their first facetoface meeting. They have talked on the phone. Tillerson, the secretary of state, knows putin. They dont know what to expect. Theres a lot going on. It is an interesting time. I would like to be a fly on the wall. Oh, yeah. The president of mexico as well. On and on. Quickly with north korea, is it okay to negotiate with north korea . Will that come up . This is the most complex situation in the world right now. And so negotiation has to be on the table as one option. But the North Koreans dont seem to respond to anything but raw power. Really it comes down, mike, to the chinese and the russians really taking an active interest in doing something with north korea, particularly china because they have a huge trade situation with them. They can provide the influence. All right. Brian sobel, we appreciate your time. My pleasure. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, workers with a babysitting company claiming theyre not getting paid. The accusations and how this could turn into a criminal case. 2 investigates has learned that the District Attorneys Office launched an investigation into wonder city for failing to pay its workers. I will get my money back. Determined and now united, these employees say they are working to regain trust also broken between them and the families. You build relationships with these families and with their children and it is a safety issue as well. They trust you with their children. They have money in that business that theyre probably not getting back. Reporter until there are answers, she will still wonder about wonder sitter. How could you do this to all of these people and lie to everyones faces. Candice joining us now to clarify. A crime has been committed. These people are not getting paid. Do we expect charges to be filed here . The only thing that the District Attorney office would confirm with us is that they are actively investigating. That is really unusual. Usually they say they cannot confirm or deny. But when i called about wonder sitter they said black and white, yes we are investigating and calling for more unpaid sitters to call us to help in the investigation. You heard that. You said im going to get my money. I checked this morning. Of course were not getting any answers from wonder sitter themselves. The owner ran from us when we tried to get answers. I logged in a few minutes ago and i could not log in. Is that a glitch . Are they not operating . Im not sure. The District Attorneys Office hasnt said anything. But we have no confirmation that they shut down. If im owed 4,000 if im a teacher or student, i could lose my apartment or not pay for my own kids care. They are vulnerable, taking the bus to and from. Parents are paying maybe 25 an hour for the care that the young women are providing. They are putting it into wonder sitter as a bank to use and theyre not getting a response. It could mean a change for my son or daughter who relies on the sitter. Thank you, candice. Coming up, we are continuing to follow the massive fire in oakland. What we are learning about the building under construction. Two men accused in the ghost ship warehouse fire are in court this morning. What is expected to happen coming up. Things are heating up for the wta. Mer. Time to play. When the us open series hits stanford for the bank of the west classic, join the celebration of summer. Where the action off the court, is just as hot as the action on it. July 31st through august 6th. Its time to shine brighter than you ever thought possible. The us open series. Were serving up the best of summer. Dont miss the wta action while its in stanford. All right. Back to our top story. Take a look at this. Side by side images of this mornings fire there in oakland near lake merritt. On the left comparing it to it on the right when it was starting to get contained. Raging out of control. Flames 100 feet plus. On the right is two hours later or so with the crews dumping a ton of water on the building, trying to prevent flareups. The fire could be seen for miles across the bay. This shows you the dense smoke billowing from the building near lake merritt. Rosemary orozco who will join us in a few moments said the winds were calm this morning other wide flames could have spread to the area. We saw firefighters taking an aggressive stance with the buildings exposed to the fire danger this morning. Christien kafton has been working on the investigative angle of what is happening. Christian, at this point crews are still on the scene. The main issue is the stability of the crane and of the scaffolding itself. Reporter thats right, gasia. Crews are working hard, pouring a ton of water to make sure that the hot spots do not flare up. If you look in the foreground, you see firefighters laying out hose, preparing to wrap that up. That is a good sign because they believe that they wont need as much hose and as much water as they previously had. But they are still you can also see just pouring tons and tons of water into this building, trying to make sure that none of the hot spots flareup. We are actually at 23rd and webster. Were on the southwest side of this fire. Lets show you video of what the fire looked like earlier this morning. This fire starting at 4 30, quickly growing to a four alarm. Sending flames and embers up into the sky. And evacuating a neighboring building. When we first arrived here, we saw dozens if not a hundred or so residents actually standing out on the street just watching this fire with us. One of the Major Concerns though, gasia, as you said, that crane spinning out of control at one point this morning. Firefighters had to meet with biggie, the contractor who operates that crane. And they learned that the reason that crane was spinning could well have been because of that fire. The heat that the crane endured. Firefighters had to go defensive. Surrounding the building. Drowning it, staying away and clear of the crane, making sure if the crane collapsed, it wouldnt collapse on them. Not wanting to put themselves in a dangerous situation. This is a 7story building under construction. We have seen these types of incidents in the past. Based on that those were decisions that we were making. Reporter this is just the latest major fire currently under investigation according to firefighters trying to determine exactly what may have caused this fire. There has been a series of buildings under construction that have burned. As we if we can come back briefly to our live shot. You might be able to see mayor schaaf just arrived on scene to survey the scene for herself. She is now walking in with a couple of her staffers. City leaders talked about how important this housing is in a city facing a housing crunch. It is extremely disheartening, alarming. You know that we oakland is an urban forest. We are very familiar with fire. I believe we have some of the best firefighters in the region. And they will get this under control. We certainly want to see new residential buildings go up. Because we have a housing crisis here. Reporter if you look in the distance, you may be able to see mayor schaaf making her way into the scene of this fire. She has already start today talk with some of the First Responders who were here earlier this morning. Those fire crews still on scene, making hard that none of the hot spots flareup. We have been told that our next press briefing could come sometime between 11 30 and noon. We will stay here and stay on top of the story to bring you the latest developments and tell you what we learned at that next press briefing in particular about that crane which poses a serious threat to anybody who could be underneath it. Christien kafton live in oakland. Pam cook has been looking into that building that is on fire and reaching out to the developer. Pam, what have you found out about this . We got a quick email from the architect on the project, a representative at the company. They are heart broken. They woke up to this tragedy. They will get back to us later as they gather more information about exactly what happened. We have also reached out to the developer on the project and the Real Estate Agents handling the leases. We have not heard back from them yet. Now, we want to show you though the drawings of what this building was going to look like when it was finished. The development was called the alta waverly. It is part of a huge construction boom as we have been talking about in downtown oakland. This particular area is the Broadway Valdez plan. The building was going to have nearly 200 market rate apartments as opposed to affordable Housing Units. And then retail space on the street level. This livework development would include a fitness work, outdoor barbecues and a dog run. You can see on the roof a deck overlooking the downtown skyline and oakland hills. So an upscale development. As we have been reporting this investigation just beginning. We do not know the cause. We do not know if it was intentionally set. However, we do know that this mornings fire is one of recent fires in the oakland emryville area at residential buildings under construction. Were showing you some of the video of the previous fires back in may. You might remember a 7story Apartment Building under construction on san pablo avenue was destroyed by fire. Investigators determined that was arson. No one has been arrested at this point. There was Surveillance Video showing possibly a person of interest. That same building was set on fire in july of last year. In october of last year, there was a fire at another Apartment Building under construction right near lake merritt which is not far from this mornings fire. Again, the investigation of the fire this morning is in its early stages. We do not know if it was arson. But gasia, mike and sal, the string of fires on the minds of a lot of people as were talking about another residential multi use building under construction now destroyed by fire. Thank you, pam. Just a lot of similarities there. Just the location. Right. Really within five, ten miles of each other. Under construction. Under construction. Meant for a mixeduse purpose. And at the time of the fire, six to 12 months away from completion. It could be an accident today. But atf agents are on scene out there. Right. And, you know, so much is made of the oakland housing situation, how these new units came online. So, you know, it is unfortunate they wont be online for quite a while. Lets move to another story, another big fire that happened in oakland devastating giant any measure at all, the ghost ship warehouse fire in december. Just this morning, the two men charged in that warehouse fire made a Court Appearance minutes ago after 9 00 this morning. We are just hearing the hearing has been continued. The two face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each of the people who died in the fire last december. Now, ktvus Crime Reporter henry lee is in court right now and he tells us that both were seated in court. They did not enter pleas as was expected because again we just learned that the hearing has been continued. Both men are in jail with bail set just under 1 million each. Outside of the bay area, temperatures could reach 108 in yolo county where a wildfire continues to burn. That is located near city of winters and grew to 1700 acres late last night. Containment is at 18 . Mandatory evacuations have been issued for two communities. That fire started yesterday afternoon and spread pretty quickly because of the dry grass. It was also burning in rugged terrain there. One person has been injured. Rosemary orozco is here with this weekends weather. When we were First Talking this morning, the fire and the wind was a big topic of our conversation. Yes. Not because the winds were so strong but they were very calm. We this that smoke come up and do one of these, flatten out right over oakland. Because we also had an inversion in place in the atmosphere. That just means a layer of warmer air above the cooler air. Kind of locked it in. And next thing we knew, that ash and the debris was sort of raining all over the city. Notice the winds are still light in oakland, which means if you smell the smoke, if theres anything lingering, any amount of smoke is toxic. You do want to make sure that you limit your Outdoor Activities if you see or smell it, especially if youre sensitive, have respiratory issues. Outside of that, mostly clear skies and we have a little bit of fog there. You can see right along the coastline. Although it is beginning to burn off. We will hit mostly cloudy to clear skies around the bay and inland. Temperatures are noted sing. 78 at this hour in fairfield. Closer to the bay, 67 in oakland. 55 in the city of San Francisco. So our micro climate pattern in place with temperatures everywhere warmer than where we were 24 hours ago. We will follow suit as we get into the afternoon. At the coast upper 60s expected in pacifica. Around the bay, upper 70s to 80s for the afternoon. Upper 80s to 90s for the hotter spots. 99 in brentwood. 99 antioch. 100 expected in brentwood. Here is a look at your extended forecast with the bay area always in view. We will have the summer like heat in place. Inland communities low to mid 90s expected. Our bayside communities upper 70s to near 80. And lower to mid60s expected at the coast. The fog will return along the coastline. We will be tracking it for you on ktvu. Back to you. Thank you, rosemary. Surfer and journalist jamaal is the author of a book that is a film about running away to surf and winding up at Journalism School at columbia. The followup comes out this month, stumbling towards enlightenment and the new ride. That is a memoir about the ten years of his life that he spent coming to terms with the Big Questions of faith and enjoys using the ocean to tell the story. Were joined by jamaal himself. Thanks for being here. Meditation, writing or surfing, if you had to pick. Which one would you go with. Not writing. Not writing. That is the painful one. I will take the meditation and surfing. How can you get to what youre doing today of . What is the key for you . Writers, i just read a quote that writing is a acceptable form of schizophrenia. It is like anything. You get a little idea, inspiration and you try to get out of your own way and tell the story and edit it to make it presentable. And, you know, the first draft is terrible. And then you keep going. You mentioned youre a father and i am too. When we have kids we think a little more about faith and our legacy and mortality and how the kids will go on without us. Did all of that factor into you writing the book . Yeah. At my age youre right between birth and death. Your kids are being born and my dad was dying as i was writing the book. My last book was about science. Im a big lover of science. When you really get into the nittygritty neuro science, youre like there are so many Big Questions that we dont know. And i wanted to go back to sort of ancient wisdom traditions and see what is it that we really reflect. You know, it is the inquiry that produces the sort of awe and wonder that where you find wisdom. And so thats those the questions that im exploring. You say the journey is the destination. Is that a plea for us to stop and take a breath and appreciate what is around us every day. Absolutely. I think theres no greater than our own mortality. Like watching my father to pass to remind you that every day is precious. Every single moment is precious. You never know. You never know if you have a day left or 80 years. It doesnt matter. You know, here we are alive right now. And it is a gift. I always tell my son, you know, youre going to have dark times. Youre going to fall off the bike which he did last summer in tahoe and it was a brutal wreck. You have to dig deep and find the strength. That will make you better. We need to find out where. Do you believe in that . Do you find that in your writings . You take dark moments and you build and you become a stronger person because of it. Yeah. Its not when things are going perfect that we find out who we are. It is the stumbles. Thats why i call it stumbling towards enlightment. It is the heart break, it is the failures or apparent failures that make us go inside and find our inner strength. Like ben franklin said he didnt fail a thousand times making a lightbulb, he had a thousand steps to getting it right. There are the dark moments that push us. Really it shows us who we are. I grew up in San Francisco. And cleaning up ocean beach is a tradition. And surfers do it a lot. Just ordinary people do it. Tell me more about the clean up. Yeah. Saturday were going to meet at 4 00 p. M. And clean up ocean beach right we will meet right in front of the beach chalet at the stairway. The person who gets the most trash, im going to give away some signed copies. Yeah. We love ocean beach. And theres a lot of plastic, especially after the fourth of july. We will see what we can do. Was it easier to write this book or the first one. Good question. They have different challenges. Once you write your first book, you have the advantage of beginners mind. When you write your second, you know, youre you have to not try to write to the audience of the first. You have to take it as a new project. Good point. All right. Jamaal, congratulations. Thank you. On the second book. Appreciate you coming in and talking about it. Coming up, it is registration day for the 15th annual backpack give away from Sacred Heart Services in san jose. How many people actually lined up to receive the free backpack for the upcoming academic year. Handballer 1 you know what i could go for . Some scrambled eggs and pancakes. Lilly we got a craving go, go, go crashing cravings in the crave van jacks gonna crash your crave jack hey, guys.
