A new survey is listing the worst places to live if youre trying to save money. One bay area city is topping that list. Go banking rates looked at the 60 biggest cities in the United States and says that San Francisco, los angeles and oakland are the worst when it comes to trying to get ahead financially. The site based their results on several factors, including median home prices, rent, sales tax, gas prices and of course median household income. We have heard from Financial Experts that it is smart to have at least a sixmonth Emergency Fund on hand in case your job goes south, something happens. The question is do you have all of that money saved up . Lets look at the poll results. About a quarter percent say yes, it is a top priority. The biggest chunk say youre trying but it is tough. Below that 37 say no you live paycheck to paycheck. Six months seems like a lot. It is. We will talk about this in a minute. Yes, got that advice in my 20s and have tried to do that ever since. Tom says were a family of educators and all i can do is laugh. And tess says not likely when a six figure income is considered low income here in the bay area. Thats right. You mentioned it is tough. Six i mean, i prefer spending i prefer saving to spending. It is a priority for me and our household. Gosh, we are so tight with our money in order to have that security. I would rather that than the fancy shoes. Every day on the news we do a story about the high cost of housing. Every day. Yes. Whether its homeless or teachers getting subsidized housing. Every single day for the last few years, we had a story that has to do with how expensive it is to live here. One of our viewers responded, saying when you live in the bay area and the six figure income is considered a low income, that is in fact the fact in San Francisco for a family of four. If youre not making 105,000 a year, that is considered low income. Within the city limits. Right. Remember when six figures meant you were rich. Thats why when people can move, they move to another location. They move to idaho and buy a house. I understand that finances are personal. I love hearing your thoughts on this one. Coming up, the ceo of the Bay Area Council just returned from a trip to new york where he looked at the citys ferry service. Up next, he will join us live on the 9 to talk about how some of that may be used in the bay area. We need more ferries. Yep. At ikea, we believe that everything you need should be within reach. In an affordable dream kitchen that works as hard as you do. Save up to 15 at the ikea kitchen event. At ikea, we believe that everything you need should be within reach. In an affordable dream kitchen that works as hard as you do. Save up to 15 at the ikea kitchen event. In may, new york city announced it is constructing ferries for a new service between all of the boroughs except staten island. It hopes to have the vessels on the water by 2019. This is part of a 325 million effort to refloat the citys waterborne mass transit system. Jim just returned from new york where he learned more about the ferry Expansion Program and he joins us live this morning. Jim, it is good to see you again. Good morning. New york city, i like it. I go there a lot. It is so easy to get around without your car. I think by necessity, you cant really bring your car. They had to think of other ways. We have an easier job with cars here. It is so easy to drive. Yeah. Real easy. Every time that i hear the traffic report, you guys are saying there is nothing going on out there. Good point. New york and the bay area have in common very strong economies and a lot of traffic congestion. Being back there for a week, it is a great city. But it is hard to get around, whether youre trying to drive in a cab or on the subway. So the idea of putting in ferry service, same idea we have here, it really is something for the time. They are very aggressive about it. They have put in this program and are actually rolling it out on short order. We got to ride the ferry that was Just Announced a short time ago. Here in the bay area, you know, were doing the same thing. We have been at this for about 20 years. We made a lot of progress and have a ways to go to have a robust regional system in place. Rider ship on the ferry system has jumped 74 over the past five years. How do you get those people who live in antioch, livermore, my issue and i live in the east bay, i will take one form of mass transit. If youre telling me to take b. A. R. T. To get on the ferry, that is a barrier for me and many others. First of all, we need to have enough Service Running to people can feel if they miss t they dont have to wait an hour. At least make it easier in that way. In new york they are running the Service Every 20 minutes. In the bay area and a lot of cases it is not that way. It is commuter times only. So it is not as convenient. I think theres a lot of new ways to get to the ferry with ride share programs. Were seeing a lot of that if you go by the ferry terminals you will see a lot of people showing up in ubers and lyfts and chariots and other ways. It is not as convenient getting in your car and going all the way. But you being able to utilize mass transit instead of a single occupant vehicle we need to focus on that. If there was a ferry that went to Jack London Square i would do it every day. I think we need more options to be there. What is your vision for it . We have this natural estuary. First of all i dont feel we utilize it. Back before the brings were constructed, we had 55 million ferry rides in the bay area per year. Now were 7 million between golden gate which is the board that i serve on. It is increasing. The demand is up there. People really enjoy a ferry ride. It is lovely. I will give it you that. If we could double the service again that we provide for the east bay service that we intend to send to the south bay, we could eliminate about a lane and a half of traffic use in the bay bridge in the rush hours. That is significant. New york city is one city. They have one mt a and a bigger tax base. Theyre going to do it. They have 20 Million People. We have 6 or 7 Million People and all different agencies have to coordinate to get something done. How can you get over that. This is the story of the Bay Area Council. We created the b. A. R. T. System back in the 1950s by bringing people together, getting the mayors of the bigger cities and other mayors as well as leaders from the legislature, opinion leaders and other groups to come together around a common vision. It is harder to do when you have nine counties and 101 cities. But people in the bay area are innovative and people who like who enjoy a good quality of life. So it is a hard job but thats why our organization was created. And were working on it. Do you need money . You guyed pushed a lot for the cal train, the electrification to get the hundreds of millions of dollars that cal train is getting. Do we need that kind of money injected into the bay area to actually execute what you guys envision here . Yeah. It has been a goodyear in that we finally got over 20 years a gas tax passed in the legislature. We got the b. A. R. T. Bond to fix b. A. R. T. To write it to a state of good repair. Now with the cal train money finally that was hard work to get the final piece of money together for electrification. It has been a goodyear so far for transportation. But theres much more to do. And yesterday mayor garcetti was in town talking about what they did in l. A. 120billion over 40 years to rebuild l. A. s light rail system and other projects. Were thinking big. We need to have the same kind of vision that they have had done in l. A. And effect change the way they do in new york without the new yorks advantage where they have a mayor that says lets do this. We need to bring people together. It will take a lot of money. Were looking at bridge tolls. They are already pretty high. There is not a bridge i think it is 20 each way in new york. So compared to that, were okay. Higher than what people would like them to be. Transportation is not free. Getting people out of their cars is really important. Yeah. So where theres a nexus between, you know, bridge traffic and other means to keep people out of their cars, we need to pursue that. Nothing is free. Right. We know that. Thank you so much for joining us. Thanks for having me. Of course. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, stepping into the ring with a 14yearold bay area boxer. You need six months ever mortgage payments in down payment, credit and equity. They want to make sure that you have money in the bank. Different than a decade ago. Yeah. The cost of living in california doesnt allow most people to save. Then he writes, lack of discipline and most living above your means. Elliot smith said saving money is something we will do when we leave the bay area. Were here until january 6th, 2020. Scraping until then. Did they say where they are going. No. So many californians leaving. We had a special report on that last week. Thank you for talking to us about something as private as finances. There was another fire in west oakland on fifth and oak on monday. We spoke to a monday who works at a courier business located next to the encampment. He was worked there for six years and during that time has seen encampments like this grow. There are just piles and piles of bicycles and all kinds of stuff that they go around gathering. Its too much. Reporter last month, oakland mayor schaaf outlined a plan to set up three safe haven camps where people could store tents. According to the chronicle, the budget only had 250,000 for the safe havens when the cost is well over 1 million a year. In the meantime, fifth and brush closed off because of this fire that happened out here. Apparently the fire damaged the wiring to a traffic light on the corner. So police say they closed off this block while they wait for caltrans to come out here and repair that traffic light. The department of public works and the city of oakland is working on bringing a crew to clear away some of the burned up debris. The supervisor is in touch with the Human Services department for a representative to come out here and talk to the People Living out here and encourage them to find another place to stay. Summer is right around the corner which means many of your children might be heading off to camp. What should the children bring with them . What are the musthaves and how do you keep them from getting home sick. We are joined live from Nurse Practitioner ashley slowman. Thank you for coming. Thank you for having me. You had the sunscreen. We had a debate about how much is too much. What do you use . It is important to have. There was a report that says that 73 of the sunscreens tested dont work as advertised. That is a big number. Sure. I think it is really important to make sure that youre reading your package labels. Spf comes in different levels. Make sure that the sunscreen that youre purchasing is a Broad Spectrum sun block. Make sure it has an spf of 30. That will protect 97 of the uv rays. Is there anything as too high. Yeah. A great question. When you get to spf of 50, youre only getting 1 or 2 more protection than an spf of 30. Once you go beyond 50, youre not getting much more protection. The ones that you buy at cvs or walgreens seems less expense i have than the other ones. Does it matter how much you pay . Are they all the same. The important thing that you want to look for, again, the label. Does it say Broad Spectrum . Is it showing it is spf against uva and uvb rays and looking at the number. I love the spray. Because my hands you know. The spray is not as effective. I love the spray. Am i wrong . People use the lotion actually. Right. You want to make sure that you have good coverage. When youre spraying, make sure it is not spraying off into the wind. Youre applying to the sun exposed area. Use one to two ounces of sun block. Thats about equivalent to a shot glass, if you will. A quarter cup of sunscreen for your whole body. Yeah. Sal said i have my bottle from last year. You shouldnt have that bottle there last year. Right. You should have used that. Hold on a second, you guys. So many important topics. Yes. Sun block in the shelf from last year, look at the Expiration Date for me. This one doesnt have one, does it. I bet i can find it. Take a look. You should be using enough of it that you dont have it sitting around. Exactly. An 8ounce bottle will only last you a few applications if youre using one o two ounces for the exposed area. Then it is important to reapply. Waterproof versus water resistant. Youre sweating a lot, getting in and out of the pool. Im going to throw away all of the old ones and start fresh. Yes. Kids these days, a physical covering is better than hoping that the sunscreen is working. If you have young ones at home, it is difficult to get them to put the sun block on. Another alternative is the uv protection clothing. So thinking about the long sleeves, thinking about the swim trunks, making sure that you have the hats with the wide brim. Home sick she is is Something Else that we mentioned. I never had a problem with that. I have two children we drop them off and they have a good time. It is an issue for some children out there and parents as well. What do you recommend. Yeah. A lot of parents come to see us at the clinic to have their health physicals. The thing that we tell parents is have a conversation before the kids go. Make sure that theyre prepared. Can you send letters . Can there be scheduled phone calls . Making sure in advance that the children know what is going to happen when theyre headed off to camp. Each child is different. My big boy is in second grade. He has friends going away for one and two week camps. If he is at a friends house for four or five hours, i get a little know your 8yearold. Yeah. You know your children best. Were a perfect pair by the way. What about nutrition . Do you pack a lunch . Should the lunch be different than the one at school because theyre outside more and running around more. Yeah. Another good question. I would talk to the camp cook. Talk to the nutritionist. See what is available for them. Again, you know your child and you know if they have restrictions or if they are picky eaters. Can you pack a lunch for them . Talking to the camp and understanding what youre able to do because you know your children best. And just looking at this video, water safety. Right. Yeah. So the camp my son goes to has a pool. That is my worst fear. I always have my eyes on him. You trust the lifeguards and make sure that the camp counselors know how far they can swim, where they can be. Yeah. Again, two things. Do your research. Know where you are sending your children and know what sort of activities that they will be participating in and who will be there to do that supervision for them. And then know your child. Does your child know how to swim, how involved are they in those water activities. Is that something that theyre comfortable with. Okay. Ashley slowman, thank you so much. From minute clinic. Thank you. Coming up, San Francisco skyline changing in more ways than you think. It is funny, there was something refreshing hearing people talk about taking the power away from the app and just being set up on dates. And going out and having to spend time with someone that they may be wouldnt have given a chance to. You know, we judge each other so quickly these days. And we just swipe or look at a profile and say were not interested. But a lot we have so many people say because i got to know this person, i realized that i liked them and i probably would not have given them a chance. This was something Old Fashioned and refreshing about the process. What i loved about the old Love Connection is when he had one account of what happened and she like what . I had no intention. At the very end. Will you go out with me again. And theyre like no, i wont. I love that disconnect. Right. There are theres a lot of disconnect here. You will like the show a lot. Its its just amazing. It just goes to show and i think its why the housewives is so popular. I think people love judging Human Behavior and hearing about Human Behavior and the amount of dating fails that i heard about. I had guys there was one guy that asked the woman what she weighed on the first date. Im like are you kidding me right now. Never. My husband doesnt ask me that question. Thats what i was going to say. I go, you cant even ask your wife what she weighs. Dont ever ask a woman what she weighs. In general. Unless it is your baby. Right. The number one piece of advice well intentioned advice for my friends in my 30s and 40s get if here single and looking, people tell them youre too picky. I cant imagine lowering my standards. What do you think of that youre too picky line . Well, i think for me what that could be kind of stretched into is give someone a chance. Okay. Be picky but maybe open yourself up to getting to know someone before you make your final decision. Things on paper may not be exactly as you think they should be. But if you get to know someone, you could wind up realizing, you know what, you know, he hes thriving in a way that i didnt think that he would. Or he is great in this way and that makes up for him being, you know, a little shorter than i thought or having one less degree than i wanted. Right. Perfect. You never know when look, after all even if he is a dud, that one coffee or dinner out wont kill you. Even if he is a dud. Im a huge fan. I appreciate you joining us. I cant wait to see Love Connection. Thank you so much. Thank you. So we have to remind you i already know this but still Love Connection hosted by andy cohen premieres tomorrow at 9 00 on ktvu fox 2. You have seen the Sales Force Tower visible from the bay area. But it will be a canvas for an art display. Pam cook spoke to the artist and gave us a behind the scenes look. So these are the wash lights at the bottom that watch the inner structure of the building. Reporter jim campbell is the artist hired by the San Francisco Planning Commission for the project that will light up the top of the citys tallest building. Instead of shining out, they shine in towards the side of the building. Reporter like the bay bridge, it will use thousands of led lights. Rather than just light, it will feature images. Its kind of a diary of the day played bang bang played back at night. Reporter video will be taken throughout the day, such as people walking and waves crashing on the beach that will then be projected on to the building at night. He is also working with a Dance Company to prerecord imagery. If it is foggy that day. One of the images that i have is a that ill be displaying wont be prerecorded. It will be basically kind of a lighthouse light that circles the building. So the building when it is foggy will kind of turn into a lighthouse. Reporter jims background is in engineering and the display is designed to be as Energy Efficient as possible. He says the estimated 5,000 watts of power is equivalent to running five toaster ovens. Pam cook reporting there. Now the panels are going to be at the very top of the Sales Force Tower. Theyre going up right now. The unique artwork wont be displayed this will until theyre turned on in the fall. The artist is excited and never advice.
