And i just talked a short time ago by phone with the faculty president. We think introducing the guns on campus is will probably increase the likelihood of there being some tragic incident. We really we dont think it is needed. It depends on who the officer is and how that person is going to use them. If this proposition comes into play, i would like to have the police to have sufficient training to be able to handle that weapon weapon responsibly. He himself is a former fbi director. He started under president bush in 2001, just days before the 9 11 attacks. He served a tenyear term and stayed another two years at the request of president obama. Mueller was succeeded by james comey, who President Trump fired last week. He says mueller is a Perfect Choice and described him as a person of integrity that leaves politics out of his investigations. Robert muellers appointment seemed to bring relief to democrats and republicans on capitol hill who hope the 72 yearold former fbi director will bring credibility to the federal probe into whether the Russian Election meddling was linked to the trump campaign. Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein issued the order wednesday, saying my decision is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted. But he said for americans to have confidence in the outcome, he felt a need for a special counsel who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command. It is agood thing. It takes the politics out of it. It has gotten too political. Anyone with any news that comes out, those on the left yell impeach. Those on the right say it is fake. Reporter democratic senator Chuck Schumer posted on twitter, i have greater confidence that the investigation will follow the facts wherever they lead. Mueller said he would accept the responsibility and discharge it to the best of his ability. He is a very skilled investigator and prosecutor. He knows how to put together a complex case. And to bring you information from the scene here live, we welcome on the phone rob eikel a member of the ktvu family. Youre from the bay area and went to new york yesterday and saw it happened. Describe what you saw. Reporter yeah. Thank you. So i was i was standing in the front of the levi strauss store. The doors were open and a bunch of teem were screaming and a bunch of people ran past the door. Behind them was a burgundy car that was flooring it. This guy was going probably 50 50 Miles Per Hour. He was flying. He mowed over unfortunately he ran over a woman in front of me. Another woman in the intersection and then he kept going. And then i saw him get another two blocks before he collided with something, some barrier where it launched the car up into the air. That was and i left the store and walked down there and there were bodies all over the sidewalk. I mean did you happen to get a look at the driver . Was it a man or woman . A man. Did you see any intent . Was he passed out . Was he awake . What was going on there. I walked down there right when they were bringing the suspect. They caught him. Ive got video of him. I dont know if it has uploaded yet. It was a it was a dark skinned male, mid30s. Didnt have a shirt on. He didnt look drunk. Of course he had like eight Police Officers holding him down. But definitely a it looked intentional. But i cant really speak to that. Rob, that person is in custody . Law enforcement has him in cuffs and he is in a patrol vehicle. Thats correct. I got video that some be uploading of them loading them into the squad car. Is there a lockdown situation in case there is the potential of another vehicle going through the area . So the police sorry for the noise. The police have shut down times square. I just got force today evacuate out of the shop i was doing an audit for. They turned around everybody. Quite a few people are in shock. People are visibly upset or sick. So youve got kind of a mixture of a lot of people who witnessed it that you know, it is definitely not something that i wanted to see today and a lot of people that are just walking into it. Rob, times square is always it always has a large Police Presence. I imagine that as soon as you saw this happen, you heard sirens. In times square yeah. There was police were here immediately. They handled the scene, the situation very professionally. They have obviously been through this before. Something similar. And they know they know exactly how to control a situation like this. S. Since you were right there as this was happening before probably some of the First Responders arrived, you know, ambulances, et cetera, did you see just people helping those who were injured and rushing to their aid . Yeah. I saw quite a few people. Quite a lot of Good Samaritans rushing to the people that had been injured by the car. I saw of course quite a few people taking out their cell phones and taking video. And then but definitely there was a lot of camaraderie of people rushing in to help out. This, so we will were showing pictures right now, rob, so you know, video of a maroon car that you described on two wheels up on its side. Investigators are poking around. We certainly have been seeing on twitter, mike and sal, chaos, concern, people wanting to know what exactly happened. As rob said, this vehicle from his perspective was going 50 Miles Per Hour. Put yourself in union square in San Francisco and think about how fast 50 Miles Per Hour you cant get out of the way of Something Like that. In times square, what are those called. Bollard posts and they use them as barriers to keep cars they are all over the place. They keep cars from, you know, certain areas in case this happens. It looks like the bollard post did its job. San franciscos muni has been testing the brandnew light rail vehicles which could be in use by the end of this year. On friday i toured the new cars and looked at the new features that could eliminate overcrowding and delays. From the outside, the new trains look similar to the ones running now. But there are a lot of improvements both in and out. When you step inside, you will notice the seating is different. The seats are side facing which makes for wider aisles and easier access for those in wheelchairs and makes it easier to stand and get on and off crowded trains. And there are more places to hold on. Once we get the cars into service, we will use them on the most crowded lines because our twin problems, if you will, with the Current System are first crowding and second reliability. And there will be an immediate improvement in both introducing the new cars. Reporter muni delays in the subway are often caused by defective doors. Officials say as almost as 40 of all delays are caused by door problems. Recently a door even fell off a moving train. U2 celebrating the 30th anniversary of joshua tree. Fans enjoyed the show but not without controversy. The show went past the weekday curfew of 0 00 p. M. That made people nearby upset. In benecia, ktvu fox 2 news. Julie foudy is a two time olympic goad medalist and a mother of two and an author helping anyone who needs push to find courage and confidence in their lives. Her book is now a best seller. This the first book from espn in print that will focus on athletes of all ages and backgrounds. Welcome to the show. The fabulously courageously you. I have to say, i love this because so often i look to others for leadership. This book tells me to look within myself. Yes. This is the thing, right. Ive been coaching and teaching young women and girls for years. Especially with young women as we know. We really are hesitant to raise our hand and say yes i can do that. So its that little nudge to say you know what, youre going to be fine. Figure out your way. Get out of that comfort zone, raise your hand. By the time we do often, the opportunity is gone. And so that was really the inspiration behind this book. When you went from the soccer field to broadcast you wrote in the book, be the idiot that says yes. A little piece of advice that you received. That was the great mary corillo that i love. How did you get out of the tennis world by doing documentaries and hbo real sports. She told me this great story. They kept asking me to do stuff and this idiot said yes. She said be the idiot that says yes. You can always learn and grow. Yes. We want to check every box. And we want to be good at being overprepared before we say, yeah, ill do it. And so that is really the inspiration. You dont have to check every box. You dont have to be perfect. Perfect is boring and impossible. But done in a fun, interesting way with all of these different women that i talked with. It is a heavy topic. I didnt want it to be so serious. I remember as a young person in general, it is hard to find yourself. Is there something that the older you of now would tell your younger self if you could go back. Yes. I would tell myself awkward is okay. I was super awkward. awkward is awesome. That is actually chapter 9 in the book. I had hair that grew up when i was in high school. I literally did not grow my hair out because i thought it would grow up. Concave chest. Half chimp. I was like what is wrong with me . If i wear big earrings people will think im okay and a girl. Now i look back and say we have to laugh at ourselves more. And maybe embrace awkward and be open to awkward. So we do a chapter on all of these grease lessons, what would you say to your younger self. We go through that uncomfortable stage. It is everyone. It is not discriminatory. You dont feel like it is when youre going through it. You hear supermodels, tyra banks and cindy crawford, i was awkward. But not like me. We eventually get there. Some of us are late bloomers. In the workplace, i like the advice because assignments have happened to me and i said am i ready for it . Am i the best one. I have to tell myself the manager picked me to do it so i am the best one. What is your strategy. I totally talk to myself. Thats what i do. I used to look in the mirror and do this crazy im good enough. I can do this. We ask what are your strategies to do it. Once you realize im not the only one that goes through this. This is normal. And i had a fabulous woman on the National Team who told me butterflies are a great thing. I wanted to get your take on soccer. We will see if i will be back this fall as a coach. You did a story about artificial turf field. Is your take that youre not a fan of them. Im not. Too dangerous. We have done a ton of digging. This is like doing a documentary. And the problem is the black pellets as well. So theyre taking just a waste, a toxic waste in the tires and grinding them up into that crumb rubber. That is the real issue. We dont know enough about it. But theyre everywhere. Yeah. And sadly theres no sign saying, hey, wash your hands after or be careful when you play on these. You should definitely shower. This woman that i played with, amy griffin, has found a long list of goal keepers coming down with cancer. The one common denominator on the list that we cover in the story, they all play object this crumb rubber and coming down with blood cancers and leukemia at an age that is far too young. You are a fabulous Soccer Player and journalist. And now an author. Yes. Being courageously and fabulously you. Fabulously you. Appreciate your time. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9 at basketball. He is good at everything. Young basketball fans get to shoot hoops with kevin durant. How he is giving back to his community a year after moving to the bay area. Next we have more on the ceremony that honors the businesses and artists so committed to supporting the city of oakland.
