Over a ten year period, governor jerry brown is in the bay area in concord this morning and an hour from now hes meeting with state lawmakers at a parking lot across the street to talk about the plan further. But if it passes, much of the money raised would come from a new fuel tax and gasia, you said its been a while since we have had a gas tax. Its been 23 years actually since gas taxes have gone up here in california. Under this proposal drivers would pay 12 cents more a gallon. It also including a higher vehicle Registration Fee. Thats based on the value of your car and would include 0 emissions vehicles. Usually the idea of higher taxes and fees are not popular with drivers but most of the people we talked to this morning say if the money goes to fixing potholes theyre okay with it. We have done an informal survey of drivers this morning. Ive talked to 8 or 9 people all but one said they were for it. Just about everyone said okay, if you can prove to me that the money is going to fix potholes and repair roads then im okay with it. Heres what some folks had to say. We need the help and these are the people who if year using the roads we should pay for it. The general taxes arent working apparently. Theres car after car pulling over to the side to fix a flat tire. So 12 cents extra for better roads, if it does remedy the situation then i would be for it. Now, also part of this proposal would include a state constitutional amendment that would guarantee the money raised would be spent on road repairs and not other projects. State lawmakers have set next thursday as the deadline to mac a decision. Again, about an hour from now, governor jerry brown will be here in concord to talk about this. One of my friends wife ran the marathon the first year and he couldnt say enough about the ground swell of support on oakland street. We get really high marks from runners all over the country. We do a lot of different events and i can tell you that oakland showed up for year one and came out and supported the runners and thats going a long way for us in terms of the growth. Local charities benefit. Yeah, probably 400,000 this year will be generated for local charities which is something we are really proud of and something that everybody, the runners and sponsors great corporate sponsors like kieser kieserer and health and wellness for them.
