Youre welcome. An oak tree more than a hundred years old falls on to a house in vallejo. No one was hurt but the three residents thought it was an earthquake. Leigh martinez is outside of the home. The home has been red tagged. Cleanup is underway. Reporter just a moment ago there was a loud crack and the homeowner witnessed more of the massive oak tree come down on to the house. She and the crew dont think that the tree has gotten into the house just yet. No one has been allowed inside because it has been red tagged. The tree also took out a power box outside of the home. And another large portion of that tree appeared to be coming down. So they did take that down a few moments agency. The family heard that crash at 2 13 this morning. They jumped out of bed, thinking the shaking was from an earthquake. They felt the house shake. And their furniture was rattling. When they looked outside, they saw the large oak tree was down in front. I was using the land line to call 911. And i was terrified on the phone because while im in the house on the phone, the tree is constantly like cracking and coming into the house. At that point i know its an not earthquake, it is the tree. Im terrified that it will knock me in the head or come completely through the house. Reporter the family says they tried to cut the tree down when they first moved in, about 11 years ago. But they say they couldnt get a permit from the city. We have been here 11 years. And we tried to get a permit from the city to take down the tree. We tried to just cut it ourselves and then they told us we had to get a permit from the city. And the cost for that and the red tape for that, it was too much. So we just kind of left the tree where it was. And since it is on our property, it is our problem. Reporter for now, the tree is finally being cut down. You see the crews out here right now. They were called out by the family. Fortunately no one was hurt. The family and the two dogs escaped out the back door. Now, again, the house has been red tagged. And the red cross is helping the family out. They say they are now looking for a place to stay with their two dogs. They dont have any family in the area. So they are looking for a hotel that will accept them and their two large dogs. Back to you guys. Thank you. An effort underway to have caltrans quickly build a new bridge now that the damaged Pfeiffer Canyon bridge on highway 1 has been torn down. The bridge started collapsing after last months heavy rains caused a landslide and the support pillar shifted. The shutdown of 1 in big sur is causing a lot of problems out there with more than 400 residents, people are stranded. People are not visiting the hotels, going to restaurants and state parks have been cut off. The locals say that caltrans needs to prioritize the bridge replacement over other projects or people stuck could run out of food. At this point we are desperate, not knowing where the next food supply is coming from. Theres been that and then theres the fact that the road is closed and theres about 400 of us stuck in this section. We as a community simply will not survive in any way that is recognizable without a timely rebuilding of that bridge. Rebuilding the bridge is expected to take at least six months, with an estimated cost of up to 30 million. You can always download our free ktvu weather app for the latest on conditions. He was asked this morning about judicial independence, whether he would find it difficult to rule against a president who had appointed him. Disputing the claim that President Trumps claim that president obama had ordered the wire tapping of trump tower. We are still at the beginning of phase of a look into what kind of surveillance occurred and why. And theres a question about what leaks occurred, why theyre happening and, again, you know i believe one of the big headlines that should come out of today is when comey talks about the unusually high amount of leaks that are coming out of this and classified information, that in itself should be a question. Why is so much information being leaked out now. Fbi director james comey testified that he had no information to support President Trumps allegation of wire tapping. Comey said that the fbi is investigating potential russian interference in the election, including any coordination between the Trump Campaign and the russian government. The Congress Members have already voted for it. One of the ones that didnt vote for it in the Budget Committee has come out in favor of it since then. All democrats in the oppose the republican plan. President trump mentioned Colin Kaepernick during a rally in kentucky yesterday. Cky yesterday. You know, your San Francisco quarterback, im sure nobody ever heard of him. There was an article today, it was reported that nfl owners dont want to pick him up because they dont want to get a nasty tweet from donald trump. Do you plaintiff that . Do you believe that . Kaepernick refused to stand during the National Anthem before games last season as a protest of Police Treatment to minorities. He has already said that he would not take a knee during the anthem this coming season. Spike lee is also talking about kaepernick who is his friend. He posted a photo to instagram saying how is it that there are 32 nfl teams and he is still a free agent. It stinks to the high heavens. Some say the protest is to blame but others say that no team wants him because he didnt play well last year. Why do you think that kaepernick has not been picked up by a team . Taking a look at the ktvu poll results, most think it is a little bit of both. 24 say it is the National Anthem protest. About the same number say it is his talent. A few say youre not sure he should be picked up by a team. A lot of comments coming in on facebook and twitter. A lot of mediocre quarterbacks getting signed. Marty says talent . More ideas on Spring Cleaning your health with a doctor of internal med sin. Spring cleaning is not just for your home. Maybe there are personal improvements you need to make as well. Our next guest is an internal Medicine Specialist who is here with ideas to overhaul your health and fitness. With yesterdays big story about clark admitting he has als, we will start with that. When you get this diagnosis, is there anything that you can do to slow it down . In other words, to have more quality time left . Its a great question. Unfortunately like youre alluding to, there isnt any cure. There is one medication that has been shown to slow the progression and increase overall survival. Many patients do decide to take that medication. Unfortunately it is the only one. Many other drugs have been tried. This is the only one that has been found to be effective. There may be a connection between nine years in the league and getting als. Do you think there is the possibility or the gentlemen degenerative disease. We know that traumatic brain injury in the past has been associated with other neurological conditions. What i can say is that the only known risk factors are age and family history. Maybe some cigarette smoking. So traumatic brain injury is not a well established risk factor. However what i will say is in 2012, huge study came out that looked at the death certificates of over 3,000 former nfl players. What they found was that people in that population died of als at a higher rate than the normal population. So that its just observational. It is not enough to draw deep conclusions about cause and effect. But it does really bring up that question that youre mentioning. Certainly a lot of people thinking about als. Donating to causes. Lets talk about Spring Cleaning your health. Yes. A lot of us have completely forgotten the promises which made back on december 31st at the stroke of midnight. Why is this a good time to clean up your health. What do we want to get rid of in our life . We talk about Spring Cleaning our homes. It may be time to check in with your health and spring clean your health, if you will. Throwing away the scale seems counter intuitive. Shouldnt you know where you are . If i want to lose ten pounds, how would i know. You feel it. Im telling you. Right now people track the weight on the scale as their number one marker of how theyre doing with the physical fitness. It is important how we calculate bmi, body mass index. Unfortunately the bmi doesnt tell the full story of your health. What studies have shown in the last 10 to 15 years is the waist circumference is actually probably better predictor of your overall cardiovascular risk, your fitness and health as opposed to just the weight on the scale. Were watching video of people working out. You encourage scheduling less time to work out. Yes. It is called parkinsons law. The more time that you give to a task, the bigger the task actually becomes in your mind. If you were to tell me im going to schedule an hour every day this week to work out, thats going to be so much more psychologically burdensome than if you say im going to squeeze in 25 minutes. I try to squeeze in an hour three or four days. Is that too much. We dont recommend going longer than an hour unless youre an athlete. Studies show if you try to go too long, that can decrease adherence to a program. You say to cut down screen time. Throw out the package low fat low carb foods. What you make in your kitchen is better than what is on the shelves. We talk about how fat diets can be good for you. The key is focusing on unsaturated fat and eliminating trans fat as much as you can. And thats the processed fat. It is found in a lot of processed foods. What i tell patients is be aware if you have to open a package to eat something. Unwrap a food item to eat something. Look on the label. That is something that you dont want to be eating any of. Thats the one thing that i dont do. I know. I never check anything. All right. Ill take your advice. That will be my spring training. We will have a fall check in. Thank you, doctor. What frustrating me is the person next to me is sweating. Is it better to be going faster . All right. President trump talking yesterday about Colin Kaepernick in regards to why nfl owners are not picking him up. Our question of the day, why hasnt he been picked up . You can see the results here. 44 say, well, you know it is a little bit of both. 25 say it is because of his National Anthem protest from last year. Kaepernick has said he will stand this upcoming season. And again, what was it 24 said because of his talent. Im getting mixed reaction. A lot of guys are saying if he can play, it doesnt matter. If it was tom brady, it doesnt matter what he would do. He would be signed. Alex says josh just got 6 million. It is number one which is our number one response. The anthem protest. Okay. Carol ryan tweets he has beenville identified for peaceful protests like just muhammad ali. I have flavor tweeting maybe because he sucks and he won one game in oneplus season. He is thinking it is his ability or lack thereof. I appreciate your responses. The twitter poll lives throughout the day on ktvu. Com. Keep the conversation going. Its a good one. Steve called me out on the weather hit. You mentioned my name. You want me to get a good nights rest. Is that right. I think for sure. We will be busy. And for sure friday morning. Okay. If ever there was a day that you might want to go chase as in severe weather, i would head out to the sacramento or San Joaquin Valley today. Officers with three Law Enforcement agencies are sitting down right now having coffee and talking with people in berkeley. The officers from the chp as well as oakland and Berkeley Police are hosting coffee with a cop. The event this morning is at fills coffee on College Avenue in oakland. They are answering questions and listening to what is on peoples minds. Most of the time people see us and are too shy to talk to us. We try to get out on social media but some dont use social media. This is a way to interact with community members. They can come down and ask us whatever they want answered. Anything is on the table. Once again i said that was at fills coffee in oakland. It is in berkeley, not oakland. They will be there until 10 30 this morning. Uber is scaling back the planned expansion across the bay to oakland. 2,000 to 3,000 employees were supposed to move into the building on broadway but now it will only be 200 to 300 people. They will rent out much of the oakland site. In a statement, oaklands mayor said this prime Office Location will be put back into full use and made available for rent to other businesses and nonprofits. In addition to the presence that uber will have there. All of this comes as two more top executives are leaving uber. The president jeff jones quit after less than a year. And the president ahead of the Mapping Systems is leaving as well. It has faced backlash recently. The california based consumer watch dog group is accusing amazon of misleading consumers and violating the law with questionable pricing. The Consumer Advocacy Group has filed a complaint with the state as well as federal officials. It checked 4,000 products sold on amazon. About 25 have a list price that is crossed out with a lower second amazon price. Consumer watch dog says that implies other retailers sell the products at a higher price. The list price really is a bogus price that doesnt have any real relationship to anything. And so theyre creating the impression of a discount luring consumers in to buy, if you will, when there really isnt any discount at all. Canadian officials recently fined the company 1 million for failing to prove the accuracy of the list prices. Amazon calls the study misleading and told Los Angeles Times that manufacturers and vendors provide list prices. We eliminate list price when we believe it isnt relevant to our customers. Here are the top stories were following with dave clark. Police are trying to track down the driver who backed up a car into a family of five at a Walmart Store sunday night. She tried to return batteries but was rejected and she was angry and she backed out and hit a shopping cart, knocking down a 3yearold girl and also hit her mother. The mother picked up the child before they were seriously hurt. Even though she knew that she had hit somebody, she still reversed on what appeared to be on purpose. And she tried to get the people out of her way at all costs. That was extremely dangerous, especially that time of day. Police believe the car is a silver honda with front end damage and the front passenger door may also be damaged. The driver is described as white or latina, 20 to 25 years old between 5 and 55 tall. She could be charged with up to five felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Today and many to, the Cal State University board of trustees will meet in southern california. Those are just some of your Morning Headlines from our news room. Mike, sal, gasia, ill send it back to you. Thank you, dave. The freedom to mary is a documentary about the fight for Marriage Equality for samesex couples. The real heart of this issue is real people who have committed to one another who simply want to make that commit approximatement a legal one. Tonight the movie is being streamed in oakland as well as San Francisco. Joining us this morning live in the studio is the producer and director eddie rosenstein. Congratulations on the documentary. Thank you. Where you finished and where you began the journey, is it what you thought the final product when you first started. Great question. I thought i was making the final journey. What i learned is it is about a 40year journey and about taking a group of people from a despised minority and the american dream. The person that you profile in the movie is the person who basically has made it his life work to get this done. Evan wolfson who actually i know because i grew up with him. Our families are best friends from pittsburg. Yeah. He is called the architect of samesex marriage. There is a lot of surprising stories about samesex marriage. But one of everybody thinks they know how it happened from where they stand, from the california fight or people in minnesota see it the way they see it. People dont know that there were regular people who were really working their entire lives to make this happen. There was a strategy, a campaign, like wizards behind the curtains pulling the levers. You take us there and show us the wizards. Yes. I have heard people refer to the fight for Marriage Equality, it happened at warp speed. Others say it took far too long to happen. What are your thoughts on that . You know, some movements have been underway for centuries obviously. So a 40year battle for a civil rights story is actually pretty fast. And obviously the story of lgbt rights is far from over. Look at the assault were under now. And when i say we, it is as a country. Im not gay. This wasnt particularly my issue. I was interested in this as a civil rights story and as the story that we can make our country better and more inclusive. President obama said when he signed it, he said this happened in lightning speed. And people were kind of like, yeah, right. Yeah. Is that kind of a point. For those who spent decades on the front lines, lightning speed is relevant. You do give voice to the opposition here. And why did you choose to let the opposition in a little bit in what could have been a strictly jorge pro game marriage fill hooray, pro gay marriage film. We need to come to terms with what we believe. I think what the film does, as much as anything, it is not just the story about lgbt rights but a blueprint how to create change overtime. They have created an instructive example that is now working with so many groups, especially the progressive groups, on how to reach across to the reachable but not yet reached and how to share stories. Grass roots, individual voices being heard. People i remember hearing, these arent strangers. These are teachers, doctors, bankers, firefighters. Yes. Saying that, what did you learn about americans . I learned that, you know, most people really want to do the right thing. And its just that we arent able to share our stories. And as a film maker, you know that sharing stories is important. But what you realize as a movement, if we can talk to each other, theres always 20 on both sides that will always take their opinion. But the middle 60 is reasonable. And as a country, we can get better. I think thats what the film shows. I think thats what the movement proved. All right. Congratulations again. The freedom to marry. We have more information about the oakland and the San Francisco screenings on our home page on ktvu. Com. Look for it in the web links section on the mornings on 2 tab and also find it on the ktvu mobile app. Congratulations. Thank you for coming in. Thank you. We will be back right after the break. Where were you that day in june of 16 . All right. Tomorrow night at 8 00, the new show shots fired airs here on ktvu fox 2. What happens when a black Police Officer shoots and kills an an armed White College student. Paul chamber has more. As he steps out, he reaches for the gun. In that moment, it was either him or me. Its with that a small town in North Carolina is turned upside down. Foxs new series shots fired gives people a different view of racially charged police shootings. But not the way that we have grown accustomed to hearing about them. Its easier to empathize with people who look like you. That is one. We recognize that the public were trying to reach dont just look like you and i. Murder of an unarmed black man and this is the one that the government is investigating. What happens to an African American officer shoots and kills an unarmed white man. The Justice Department is called in to investigate the case. They leave it open for the audiences interpretation. Reporter as it investigates and up folds, the two find themselves looking into another officerinvolved shooting but this one appears to be neglected. We want people to talk and to have heated discussions. We want there to be, you know, a deeper understanding and consciousness about what is happening in our country. It shows the injustice in how a case is handled when it is a young black man who is shot h it is a young white man shot. Reporter the show looks at both cases from all those involved from government officials, Law Enforcement to families affected and the community. Shining a light on racial issues facing our country. We should have done this 150 years ago. We should never have had this racial hatred and experience. But we have it. So now we do it. For more on the show, im joined by two of the stars uc berkeley graduate who plays an investigator and the officer at the center of the story. Good morning to you both of. Good morning. Let me start, this has to be one of the most timely shows in television today. Ill start with you. Is that one of the reasons that you signed on . Absolutely. Gina wrote and produced love of basketball like 17 years ago. Came to me along with reggie, her husband,. And i was excited even before i read it. They have such integrity and such good film makers. I have been wanting to work with them. When i found out it was about such an important topic, were kind of crisis in this country. And have been for many years. I was excited. Uhhuh. And my role, she is dynamic and such a juicy role for an actor to play. It was kind of the perfect storm. Mac, when i talked to some of our viewers, not all of them, they say in my business when we run stories about shootings again and again or officerinvolved shootings, you know, they kind of become detached to the news. Why do you think the same people that i was speaking to will be engaged or watch shots fired here . I think with this show, with the writing, you know, of gina and the entire writing team and reggie, i we allow the world to see the lives of these people instead of just seeing what you see on the television screens. Uhhuh. A lot of times we see the cop shooting the kid or a certain situation happens and that is it. The only other fox that we get is the only other information that we get is the what i that the news would paint the different characters of each person. But what would happen if you actually went into the homes of these people. Uhhuh. What would happen if you actually went into the lives of these people and got a chance to determine what kind of person they are based on the way they treat their family and the way they treat their jobs, the way that the community treats them and go from there. It is more of an unbiased opinion on an unbiased view on the world as a whole rather than cop shoots kid. It is more than just a headline. You get into the actual lives of these people. How did you prepare for the role . She is an investigator with the department of justice. I actually they set me up with a woman who is an investigator with the department of justice. She had 20 years in Law Enforcement. She is she was latina. Uhhuh. So she dealt with issues of sexism and racism. She shadowed her, picked her brain. Being in Law Enforcement really affects your home life, especially in particular as a woman because you kind of have to you know, you have to be on the defensive and you have a different world view. She helped me with my gun training. It was great. And i did some mixed martial arts to kind of get into the mindset of a fighter. Ashley is a fighter. Yes. She is always on the defensive. Yes. Well, i look forward to it. Ten episode series starting on ktvu fox 2 tomorrow at 8 00. Congratulations to both of you on the roles and thank you for taking the time on this tuesday morning. Thank you. Thank you. Coming up on mornings on 2 the nine, the big dance comes to san jose this week. How you can get a taste of the action even if you dont have a ticket.
