With the major news weve been following all morning for you. Well get you the latette on Hurricane Matthew right now. Matthew could make landfall told between Daytona Beach and jacksonville. More than 3 Million People have been evacuated from florida up through the carolinas. Florida has opened 22,000 relief shelters. Flight aware shows 4500 flights have been canceled nationwide between wednesday through tomorrow. Rosemary has been tracking the conditions of the hurricane. Lets get it over to rosemary right now. It looks like anywhere from 20 to 30 miles offshore right now. Still a category 3. Torrential rain coming down. It could move just west enough that it makes landfall between Daytona Beach and jacksonville. Well be tracking that over the course of the next few hours into the afternoon. We find the strongest winds, those winds 120 Miles Per Hour, gusting to 150, right within that wall, right at the coast, were looking at winds anywhere from 60 to 80, although we have had reports of up to 800 Miles Per Hour 100 Miles Per Hour near cape canaveral. It looks like the most dangerous component at this point will be the storm surge. High tide going on right now in and around noise areas. That plus the wave highlight, we could see anywhere from 7 to 11 feet of storm surge. Thats enough to definitely put houses under water. In these type ross situations, sometimes it takes 24 hours or so before we see all of the damage involved, but a very dangerous storm there, and that will continue as we get into the next 24 to 48 hours, as it continues to track towards the north. As weve been telling you this morning, we learned that matthew has already claimed one life. Now the warning is out to city and states in the storages path to evacuate. This is video taken just off day toy in a beach. This is exactly what rosemary was talking about. Those 120 mile an hour winds devastating that coastal area right now. High tides and downed trees very common. A lot of concerns in florida. Weve learned that the fatality from this morning was a 58year old woman in the st. Lucie area, who had a hart attack. Crews could not reap her because of the storm. So far are the damage in florida has in the been as bad adam predicted, but that certainly does not mean that the danger is over. The storm is heading northward, bearing down on the carolinas and georgia. The governor of South Carolina just held a News Conference in the last hour. She said not enough people will be heeding the evacuation warnings. She said this is the last time she can warn people before the storm pushing into her state, and there are still thousands of people in harms way. It is getting worse, and so we are looking at major storm surges, we are looking at major winds. We are looking at wet grounds, which could be flood like, what we saw last year, and you know when you have that, you have a lot of fallen trees, so this there is something safe about what is about to happen. This is the last time you will hear my voice when im tell i dont go i to evacuate. The president also issued a stern warning saying people need to heed those warnings to evacuate. You heard rosemary talking about the surge, expected to are anywhere from the 7 to 11 foot range. There are still too many people who have not left the lowlying areas, specifically the barrier island. The next 24 to 48 hours will be very telling. Certainly the warning going out to those who live in the carolinas, to georgia. Specifically, the governor had warning for those living in the barrier larges region to get out. Joins us on the phone is lars, a resident of co co beach, florida. Lars, if you could, describe weight been like there over the last 12 hours. A lot of noise, a lot of wind, a lot of rain. We just walked through our building. We live in a condo on the beach with 49 units, and i just checked everything out, and theres very little damage. There is a lot of cleaning up to be done afterwards, but weve got probably within 25 miles of the eye of the storm that passed early this morning, and were fine. Lars, were you and the others who live in that complex ever told or asked to leave, or was your plan always just to ride it out . Well, my plan was to ride it out. Ive been through many of them, and the building that we are in is is actually just fine to take a major hit, you know, direct hit, and that didnt happen. But everybody else in the building has evacuated. Most of the people in the town has evacuated. The problem now would be that people come back, see how little the damage is, and, you know, they were talk about catastrophic things and all of this other stuff, and now theyre not going to believe anybody next time, which they probably should. Thats what i was going to ask you. You talk to people there, and sometimes people make the decision to stay back, because they tonight believe the forecast or the government. What are the reasons why some people decide to stay back and not go . Well, i prepared for be even the worst case, which would be failure of our hurricane shutters, and be then slides gas doors and suffer and have is a safe room in the back of our condominium that no matter what, i would be safer. So i was never in any mortal danger of injury or anything like that. But i had prepared all of this, before the storm, so i could handle just about anything that would come. Now, a lot of people are not doesnt know enough, but, like i said, i saw this in 1999 with floyd, which did about the same thing, and afterwards people said, well, you know, next time they have a hurricane, im not going to listen to them, and that is the biggest danger. All right, lars, glad to hear that you are safe, and thank you are for taking the time to speak with us this morning, lars. Hurricane matthew is being blamed for 280 deaths in haiti. In one pro fins province, 30,000 homes were destroyed. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. In florida, its not just people, but pets and other animals are in danger from Hurricane Matthew. A lot are being relocated to shelters in other states. 50 dogs and landed at a shelter in marysville. Humane societies around florida have evacuated investigators. They shelters. He Humane Society workers are hoping for an upside with pets finding new loving homes. The end game for the animals here is that they find a forever home, that they are on somebodys coach in a few days, and the stay there the space to take on lost or tray animals that number a location where they arent homes after this storage. You can get the latest information on the return by tracking the storm, and you can find that right there on our home page. Hurricane matthew continues to ground right . S in the southeast. Both Hillary Clinton and donald trump are off the campaign trail today, preparing for their second debate on tuned. That debate in st. Louis will be town hall style with people in the audience allowed to ask questions, along with the moderators. It will be interesting to see how the candidate accuse dew that format. Donald trump certainly needs to go negative against Hillary Clinton, but he cant really afford to do that when hes talking about voters who have very really concerns, down to earth concerns theyll be posing to him. And Hillary Clinton is very good at policy, but sometimes she just doesnt do what her husband does, and feel the voters pain. Again, the debate is scheduled for this sunday at 6 00 p. M. , our time in st. Louis. Coming up here on mornings on two, keeping Young Athletes safe on the field. The effort in marin county to protect students from concussions. In response to College Campus assaults, missing hikers be, people who work the graveyard shift. The wear safe tag calls for her with just the press of a button. Its the first to provide Location Information to friends and Emergency Responders while recording whats happening and why you may need help. It will also record audio if you may need to talk about what is happening. Who here with wear safe ceo, and of course ronnie lott, chief safety advocate for wear safe. What it mad you join this team . Well, what made me join, when you think about safety and you think about your kids, about your relationships and the people you have around you, you realized there are a number of people you would love to contact right away. If you think of this button just sitting here, and let me pull it up here. If you thing of this button, and youre just able to touch this button, now you have a chance to alert your friends. There were a number of times i needed to alert my friends for a host he of reasons, and i think a lot of times you forget that there are people who really care about you. And in the news, lately, certainly weve been talking about all of these campus assaults in particular. I know youre out on College Campuses. Its a way to push this little button, very discreetly, without pulling out your phone and drawing attention to your yourself, which makes it, in itself, seems much safer. Youre on campuses across the United States. Do you have any Success Stories . Yeah, we do. We have we actually, a couple of weeks ago, got an e mail from a female who was actually walking to her car after work, was unfortunately then met with some gentlemen who were not friendly. She pressed her tag. Her network calmed 911. The police came and arrested there i guys. How quick is response to this . Well, it your network, and they can hear whats going on, so very quick and first quarter. The whole problem was we have is this false since of security in our pocket, our cellphones. We think if im in an emergency, or just need a little help, im on my phone, i can make the fall, but a lot of times in those distress events, thats not a viable option 0. And what is really key, is it has your location, and it records the sound. So unfortunately if a crime does take place, or something, they can actually have evidence right there with some sound going on. Yeah. Yeah. Were really the audio is really what sets it apart. Its what allows your network to actually hear whats going on, because, you know, responses are different based on whats happening. If i press my tag because im uncomfortable at a party, thats a lot different than pressing my tag because i just got in a car accident or being assaulted. So being able to quickly hear as a responder and hear, okay, this is the type of response that they need, yeah, its a big difference. And it has unfortunately happened at sports events, as well, where you see things going on, or feel in danger going out to your car. Thats right. And there are many times youre in trouble, and not sure what to do, and this gives you that assurance that theres no a moment that you can respond, and that you can respond in a respectful, thankful way. And to to me you have some control. You have control. But more importantly, you have control of who you are, and the boundaries around you. And i think a lot of times people do invade your boundaries. I have that happen occasionally, and when it does happen, you get a little nervous. Well, being a celebrity, i would imagine that that happens to you, as well. A lot of talk about the stadium and the deal, trying to keep the raiders and hears. How is and the as. How is that going . Its going great. Im excited. I know that howie long was cheering on that project in vegas, but here im cheer on this project. We have a great community. The community has responded, the Business Community has responded. Eric truckman from the nfl was here with the mayor. They had a chance to talk about what they would like to have happen. So a lot of good things are happening for oakland. And oakland could certainly use it. They have phenom natural fans, the raiders and the as. Youre part of an investment group, trying to catch people up to buy the arena, the stadium. Would you have a vested into interest in the in team, as well . Because if you build it and the times leave publishy you dont have any control over that . Were not necessarily worried about the teach, and im not wired about them team. What im worried about is protect it will the community, or protect thick communitys efforts of being able to be a citizen who understands that this is very important to a lot of people. When i was a kid, and i was talking to another gentleman that played for the raiders, when we were kids, what inspired us was being in that environment, being around the arena, being around the game. And there are a number of young people here that i know, and i just spoke to ea sports, and they said, look, we may not be be a sponsor, put we would be interested in helping on this project, you know why . We want to help kids. We want 20 help kids. We want to help kids grow up aspiring to be the next ronnie lott, to be the next kenny stabler and did derek carr. Ask keeping the stadium where it is. We know youre more a 49er than associated wet the raider bunt moving levis stadium to santa clara, that was a big deal, and we noticed last night, there are empty seats. Yeah, there are in the seats, but the raiders belong in oakland, and oakland blocks to the raiders. When you just is it a sayre it, it sounds right. So weve got a lot ways to go, but we have a lot of support. A lot of people are pulling for it. The mayor has done a wonderful job. The councilman, reed, has done a wonderful job. Scott haggerty from the county supervisors, hes done a wonderful job. There are a lot of people who is have done the best that they can do. And to me thats the best you can ask of people. Well, hes certainly a great spokesperson. Now we know why he is hired to do this. No, this is perfect. And better yet, im a dad. Youre a dad. And we talked about this. You have college aged kids, and thats a big deal. This is free, the first one is free, 5 a month, works with the app on your phone. Thats right. A 30day trial, get the tag for free, and then just five bucks after that. Well put that information on my facebook page. Thanks for coming. You probably recognize this man in this weeks flashback friday. What he was doing 17 years ago, that some say is is remarkably similar to what hes doing today. Building Community Bonds over a cup of coffee. The deal involving local law enforcement. A picture of whats happening with Hurricane Matthew to get you updated. People who live in cocoa beach, florida, are certainly feeling the effects of that category 3 storm. Some of the worst damage, however, is being seen farther north in Daytona Beach. Take a look at the wind and rain in these two pictures. Forecasters predict thats one of the areas matthew could make landfall. We know that power is out to in 600,000 people throughout the state of florida. Hurricane matthew is expected to reach georgia later tonight. Savannah one of the cities that have opened up emergency evacuation centers. Air travel here and around the nation is affected by this hurricane. Seven flights to and from florida are canceled, but that fund could grow through outthe day. It may be about the same as yesterday where several flights were canceled. My friend flew down to miami to celebrate his mothers 90th birthday, and got stuck down there, and he cant get back to new york. Most airlines are waving their fees for passengers changing their itineraries because of Hurricane Matthew. That category 3 continues to wobble just offshore, as we showed you a little while ago. Just off Daytona Beach, looks like 20 to 30 miles right off the coastline. So definite a lost rain and wind, and weve been talking about it for days now, the storm surge, perhaps the moist deadly part of this storm. This is actually going to hug the coastline for the next 24 to 48 hours. We do have gusting reported in and around jacksonville apt about 46 Miles Per Hour with sustained wins of 24. So 120 Miles Per Hour right there along the eye wall, moving north west at about 12 Miles Per Hour. Later today, it begins to move a little closer to areas right along the georgia do it. By saturday morning, its now approaching the Southern California coast. This path has it perhaps touching right there along the land. This could change, of course, over the next 24 hours. It could change over the next six hours. As we did into late saturday, its now approaching the coastline. It will continue to weaken at this point, but still it will be a very dangerous storm. Back to you. Before we let you go, back here in the bay area, we have fleet week, college football, blue skies through the weekend . Youre right. We have quite the different story going on around here. We are looking at fab his area in time for your bay area weekend. Think tomorrow will be actually the warmest day, so bring on the heat, especially for our inland cities. Here is a comparison from yesterday into today. A notable jump coming your way for our afternoon today. Yesterday 80. Upper 70s expected for San Francisco, upper 80s for livermore. San jose yesterday, your high was 78. Today youre going to 84. So a dramatic warmup coming today. Tomorrow will be the warmest day. Tells come town just slightly on sunday, but still nice, mild to warm around the bay and inland. Sunny at the coast. We do begin a flip in the pattern with temperatures cooling off monday. But a nice, warm sunny weekend in store for the bay area. Back to you. Today, several bay area Police Officers are inviting people to have a cup of coffee and talk with Police Officers more National Coffee with a cop day. Departments in several local cities are among those inviting people to come sit down and have a cup of coffee. Good morning, lieutenant. Reporter good morning. I hope you guys have your cup of coffee. Ive had about 15, im good to go. Thats whys way asking the question. Where can people meet you for that cup of coffee . Well, theres 10 locations in San Francisco. Weve at coal street. The good thing about it is its coffee, and you get to talk to comes about anything you want. Its a great thing. We happen to have supervisor brew come down. Its just a great thing to interact with the people. The picture were seeing here at that particular coffee shop, the officers who are who are there, are they working in that neighborhood, actually on patrol right now . These officers are on patrol right now, and theyre meeting to have a cup of coffee and a quick chat, and they represent the district in which they work. We have ten different stations. So you have comes from all over the city. So i could show up there. , and i could find a cop from my neighborhood and say, hey, how are you doing, my name is sal, whats going on, right . Exactly. We have posted a link on our website to the locations. We want to be engaging to the community. Lieutenant, i dont have to tell you that there are some members of the community who feel very much at odds with the San Francisco police department. What do you say to those thinking no way, never am go eling to sit down and have coffee with a Police Officer . Give officers a chance. When you get to meet an officer oneonone, give them an opportunity, express your concerns and your views. And its just a oneonone contact you may have that may change your perspective, or maybe it wont. But you have a chance to voice your opinion, and thats important, too. And whats the number one topic of conversation youve been hearing this morning . The number one thing is that people are surprised weve within doing this, and how long weve been doing this. And weve been doing this for a while. We do it about every other week throughout San Francisco. And they want to do it on weekends, so i guess well do that, too. Giants and cubs tonight. Your thoughts . Giants in four or five, a sweep . 0, its giants all the way. It has to be. Arent you a believer . Of course. Youre telling me. Come on. Thank you, will not. Thank you, lieutenant. It is flashback friday, and we are looking at another story of residents sitting down with Police Officers. Here are some of the headlines we were covering on this date back in 1989 1999. In an effort to clear the air between Oakland Police and oakland teens will not didnt get off the ground tonight. Just as police were about to june 100 local teenager are on the rooftop of of adown parking garage, more than 200 protesters from a separate event got in the way. We came here to let them know that we want them to reopen the investigation, and particularly focus on the case of we have a really good message here today. We were trying to teach use and police how to community. During the week, were in the authority figure, but we can learn a lot from youth. Real estate tycoon donald trump announced today he has formed an exploratoriy committee and may run himself. He turned to governor Jesse Ventura for advice. Weve known each other for years, and were going out to dinner. Thats all it is. Reporter when donald trump said today he see officially exploring running for president as an independent candidate. The committee will evaluate trumps chances, and he said hell decide for sure by january. A frightening number of concussions last year in the marin County School district. Tell us about this new initiative. Dedicated to education, prevention, and air wears. Because the grand jury report came out, we decided we wanted to start this initiative. We are supporting three high schools. Two of the high schools didnt even have athletic trainers prior to this. For someone who does not have children in high school parts, what does a train dear on the field that a coach cant . So we are Trained Medical personnel. We already to provide injury prevention, every case, coming up with what we call a diagnosis to make a determination of whether or not to refer, whether or not its something we can handle. Right now a lot of soccer going on. Are the athletes coming to you as a trainer, or more are you grabbing them and pulling them in and saying i need to take a look at you right now . Well, thats the thing. Concussions are very subjective injuries. Its difficult to see from the outside. We really row lie on the athlete to be honest. The team gates are a great resource. Coaches are fantastic. An athlete will come off the coach and say, hey, im busy, dumped my head, and the coach will say go see sheena. Back when i played, what happened is you would just kind of toughen up and go right back in. What kind of damage can be done in the coaches are still using that metsage . Its like, like, okay, shake it off, and go back in. Thankfully the culture on that has changed quite a bit, but the largest risk is a syndrome that can result from going back to play too soon, being mostly healed from an injury, but not completely, and that has potentially life threatening consequences. So for are the parents, make like me, who is said to way is my son going to play football, what do you say . I say that against on the community, the coaches, the ability of the coaches to teach proper form, how to fall, how to tackle. That in and of itself, the technique has seen a shift in the last few years, and there are consequences for tackling with the head, which is also associated with the more traumatic injury. But theres a lot of information out there right now. Its a lot safer of an environment. Do you want to be in all schools . It costs money. Yeah, it does. But marin general is looking to dough if possible. Were invested in this. Thank you so much. Fleet Week Celebration continues. Coming up, we will have a person from military the First Official show by the blue angels. Lieutenant paul giants us this now to talk about fleet week. Your first time in San Francisco. Talk to me about the coming together that the marines have provided for you. I would imagine you have life long friends from all corners of the country. Sure. I started in the navy, but no, no rivalry at all 37 i misunderstand marines, but my best friends all come from the naval academy, the a mean corps. Do you see a lot of kids coming up . Oh, yeah, the kids love us. Everybody is excited to see us. Excited to see the marines. Do you watch the blue angels show . Yeah, ill be down there at marina green. Thats the highlight of the week for so many. Thank you, lieutenant, for joining us this morning. Thank you for having us. Right there on the home page in our local news section. Also, a special ceremony planned this weekend for a very special Service Member retiring. We go to mike for more on that. Sergeant, welcome. Thanks for coming in. Appreciate it. Thanks for having us. How long have you been with pass cal. Just about a year. Me has been with the 345 reason corps since 2008. Hes been in a while. What was he doing overseas in so pass cal a trained patrol explosive detector job. Hes trained to bite and afriend suspects i direct him to, and the explosive part means hes trained to find explosive devices. So on a miguel, hes go wrong the men and women, so you would send anymore, and he would try to sniff something out, and then he would alert . Exactly. As a team, the tog doesnt work alone, we Work Together. Me as his handler, and him as my dog. Well go into areas. Well lead routes, and everyone else is following behind us, trusting we are make thick way safe. And he probably has saved many lives. Yes. How did you get involve with pass cal . Did you grow up with somebody who had dogs and when you got into the service said this is something im interested in . Pretty much. Its something i wanted to do. I grew up around animals, and i heard about the military working dog problem, and they told me that only like the top 5 actually make it to be working dog handlers, and joined to be a military working dog handler. So youve been to San Francisco before . I have. So tell us what is going to be going on tomorrow in the city. So were doing our k9 heros bark in the park tomorrow between 11 00 and 1 00, weil be putting on a show. The marine corps is up front. Were going to demonstrate some of the capabilities that these dogs have. I also believe that the San Francisco fire department, a lot he of i the other local agencies, and even some companion dogs and service dog associations are going to come out and also display their dogs. And a certain Retirement Service or ceremony . A little bit, a little bit. I dont want to ruin anything. But do you get to keep pass cal at all . Aint been with pass cal the longest. Generally theres a hierarchy with that. Thats hard to too. It is. Because youre the most recent handler. I am the most recent, but not the longest. Normally the handler that gets him, or gets first dibs is the handler thats been with him the longest, or deployed with him the most. . Well, thank you for your service, product it, sergeant. And thank you for your service, pass cal. Come out tomorrow to see this guy. Well be back after the break. Ea she saw the boots and fell for fall all over again. Was she expecting to find the perfect designer boots at such an amazing price . No. But thats the beauty of a store full of surprises.
