Maybe foggy, this is what we get. Pick up the fog, throw it out the window. Its like the super bowl for political watchers today. We are just now hours away from the first debate between Hillary Clinton and donald trump. The two president ial nominees are making their final preparations in very different ways. And a record breaking audience expected to watch them battle it out at new yorks hofstra university. Caroline shively is joining us live with more on the story. Caroline. Reporter good morning, guys, only 1100 very lucky ticket holders, including students, media members, and chosen guests of the two candidates will be inside the building mind me. Behind me. Its estimated 100 Million People will be sitting in the living rooms at home watching the two candidates face off on the first president ial debate. The stage is set at hofstra university, Hillary Clinton and donald trump will stand at these podiums, for 90 minutes, weighing in on key issues in front of an estimated 75 million or more viewers. Clinton and trump should expect to answer questions on three preannounced teams, americas direction, achieving prosperity, and securing america. The contest is expected to consist of 6, 15minute schedules. How she would make college affordable, how shell create good baying jobs, how shell bring down the cost of prescription drugs. I think donald trump is very well prepared for this debate. Look, all the enthusiasm is behind him. Hes summering in the polls and surging in the polls and hes exactly what america is looking for. Reporter theres a lot riding on how the nominees perform. A quinnipiac pole shows a virtual tie between the two in a four person race with 44 supporting clinton, to trumps 43 . A bloomberg poll shows trump getting the advantage, 43 to 41 . A few hours from now, both candidates will do a walk through. They each have about 45 minutes. Theyll do it separately. Can they see out in the audience. Get a feel for those podiums and how theyre going to keep their focus for 90 minutes with lester holt questioning them. Back to you. Caroline shivelyly, live shively, live in hempstead, new york. Where the debate will be. One will be in San Francisco at the chapel on the valencia street, another at San Jose State University on the ground floor of the student union. A uc berkeley a watch party will be held at the institute of governmental studies at the ics library. Donald trumps has organized several watch parties, monahans restaurant on mountain boulevard in oakland, luna loca restaurant in, and the marin trump office in the city of novato. We have a list of debate watch parties on our web site when you go to ktvu. Com, look under mornings on 2, and its there for you, and also under our local news section. Joining us now is political analyst, joe tuman, the super bowl for politics has arrived. People who like politics, this is the most important debate because its the first one. There are a bunch of states that do early voting. This is your chance to catch people about to cast a ballot, and help them to make up their minds or solidify their votes, absolutely. Vulnerabilities, what would you say the unusually one vulnerability for Hillary Clinton and donald trump. Its the same for both. They are both disliked by a lot of people. What they want to avoid doing is reinforcing their own negatives by the performance in the debate. For her, the perception, that she is icy, which i think is unfair, reserved can come cross that way. I think there is some gender bias in that perception, but its out there. And for it is that he tends to be a bully in situations and the last thing he wants is a visual of that as theyre storming the stage and him looking like hes bullying her in this. Appearance is important. We want to hear substance and well hear it, but appearance, especially for undecided voters is very critical because ken by nixon kennedy, nixon, president bush checking his watch or the sighs from al gore. How important are the moments or one liners, that they may or may not throw out. They can be very significant. They dont usually help you win the debates. Nobody really wins the debates. It reinforces existing preferences or biases. For the small percentage of undecided voters. The 1966 jimmy carter, and ford ran. He made the statement, there is to soviet domination of eastern europe. And frankel couldnt believe what he heard because there was soviet domination. He doubled down and insisted he was right. It defined his presidency and him. He lost the race. Matt lauer is criticized for i guess, letting facts or people say things that werent true. Is there pressure on lester holt to, you know, if someone says something thats blatantly untrue, is there pressure on him to step in or is he just going to let them go. Way the format is designed, he could with a follow up question, but the way the format is designed is hell put the question out there, the moderator will, and then within the 15 minutes they have for each segments, the two candidates will go at each other. The real person doing the checking of the authenticity, or veracity, is donald trump and Hillary Clinton. Its supposed to be a debate, and its in a real debate, theyre supposed to engage one another and perhaps resolve their differences or clarify their differences on certain issues. Do you expect to see donald trump walk back any of the major statements he has made that have offended African Americans or perhaps muslims with the temporary ban or mexicans saying they are rapists, any of the big statements that dominated the headlines for weeks after he made them, can he take any of that back . When you say walk back, what do you mean . Repudiate what he said. If Hillary Clinton says to donald trump, will you as president impose a temporary ban on muslims, what does donald trump say. Hell probably clarify his condition but hell double down, and insist that he was right the first time and go for it, where thats concerned, and thats potentially a trap for him. I have to say, at this point, if he did the opposite, then he would be accused of flip flopping, and frankly, he would risk his own base in some ways. Hes already disillusioned some people by saying that he would modify some of his stances earlier on immigration, and that created a big fizz injury within his own fissure within his own camp. She does as well, and i dont know that theyre really going to change peoples minds, its just you dont want to make that big statement that is so factually wrong that it reinforces the perception people have of you. Going into the debate, people, because of chevy chase on saturday night leaving, people saw ford as a simpleton, and a guy who played football at michigan without a helmet. When he said that and it was so out of step of reality, it reinforced the perception. For donald trump we know that he exaggerates and says things that arent threw. Thats not the knock. The knock is hes overaggressive and doesnt do his homework. What he wants to avoid tonight is he wants to be himself but doesnt want to sound like somebody who hasnt done his homework, because you can bet mrs. Clinton will have done her homework. Is she going to try to get under his skin. As much as she can. She wants to dominate, and distinguish herself. If you get too nasty or al gore in the 2000 debates, i know the answer, that can come back on you. Back to the were judging them on different career yankee. Some might career yankee, some might say Hillary Clinton criteria, some might say Hillary Clinton is too bossy, if trump does that, hes strong, and forceful. A bit of the depender bias you touched gender bias you touched on before. In the 1858 Senate Debate between lincoln and douglas, the debates that started what were doing now, they debated one topic that year, and the topic was slavery. They did it 7 times in 7 congressional districts, spoke for 3 hours. And they drilled down on that topic. How ironic that a century and a half later were talking about Race Relations in this country, and will probably be talking about it tonight, too. Political analyst, joe tuman, thank you. So many people say they know they are voting for. 100Million People could tune in to watch tonights debate, which leads to our question of the day, why are you going to watch tonights president ial debate. Saying quote im watching the debates because who i choose matter, and lets be honest, it could be super entertaining. Leah says im not, nothing either candidate says will affect my vote. And damien, says to watch trump Say Something ridiculously funny or entertaining. We appreciate your use of the hash tag, ktvu the 9. Watch the debate here on ktvu. Yesterday, here last week, here on the 9, we told you about the macarthur maze, announcing the 2016 genius grants. 23 people are getting a 625,000 grant over five years. One of those people is jose, of San Francisco. He creates a pathway to Financial Services for people with limited or no financial access. Joining us this morning, a real life genius. We would like to welcome jose quinos, thank you for joining us. How did you learn you were awarded the genius grant. I got a call three weeks ago. It was an odd call. More like, are you jose, do you live here, work there. Trying to verify my identity. I was suspicious at the beginning, and they told me what it was, and it was a very moving emotional moment. I dont think ill ever forget it for the rest of my life. Particularly emotional because the way you came to the country is perhaps a story not everyone knows. You crossed the border illegally with your five siblings on your own. You were orphans. Yeah, that happened in 1980. I was 9 years old, and i love to underscore this point, because president reagan designed the Immigration Reform of 1986, we were table to get amnesty, and because of that i was able to unlock my potential, and went to uc davis a masters from princeton, i was able to sort of realize all my hopes and dreams, but it was really because i was able to get amnesty back in 86. If it wasnt for that, none of this would have happened. And you started literally with nothing. How are you now able to help others who may be in a similar situation maybe with a little bit of money but dont turn to the traditional banking method. What we are trying to do with the program called landing circles, there is a lot of great innovative things happening. We are formalizing what that is. Its a time honored tradition of people coming together and lending and saving money together. We are able to formalize it and report it to the Credit Bureaus and by virtue of doing that, we are helping people build Credit Scores and thats the key to access a world of opportunities in the financial marketplace. Its about recognizing what people are doing in their lives, and saying thats phenomenal that people are coming together f in a lending environment by sheer trust. We should all inspire to do that. Its a starting point to build financial security. Lets talk about the title genius. You dont louis it on yourself, you dont like hearing it. Are you getting ribbing from your siblings. How is it playing out in your real life . My family, i love them. They love me. Theyre extremely proud. Its something i never thought was going to happen. Mind you, we came here with nothing. 30 years later, we get this award. Im still trying to get my mind to wrap around it. Its a high honor indeed, and its going to give the platform to tell a different story, not just about myself, but really about immigrants, poor people, that, you know, those assumptions we have of poor people are wrong. Theres a lot of ingenuity, a lot of faith, a lot of hard working people that they just want a chance. And im privileged to be work to go try and provide that. We need to rethink what we think about poor people. Have you decided how to spend your hundreds of thousands of dollars. 635,000. I want to keep doing what im doing. Im going to keep doing what im doing. Im going to do more of it. Maybe well go to disneyland at some point, but, yeah, i mean, its a great honor, and its going to give me a platform to expand on our work, reach more families and communities across the country. Do you think what your parents would think if they could see you now . Yeah, i think about that all the time, and i know they would be very proud, and i know that im living out their values and traditions and hard work ethics, so i think theyre smiling upon us right now. Thank you so much for joining us. Congratulations. Thank you. Mike and sal. Gasia, coming up on mornings on 2, the 9, a working mom or a stay at home parent. Guest star day digs is joining us live this morning day morning taye diggs is joining us. Thank you for following me on twitter. I follow everybody. Please dont feel special. You were requested to play this role. How does that make you feel . It makes me feel so loved. Hash tag blessed. You know what i mean. Weve all been in this industry for a good amount of time. Its great to be at a point and at a level where, you know, we all know each other, and you know, shes doing really good work and for her to make that request and for it to actually happen is its cool. Im having a ball on the show. Ive never been on a show like this. Its huge. Im the talk of all my social circles. I get to play this politician that falls for cookie, and i pursue her, so i get to trade blows with amazing actors, as well as friends. Its a good time. What do you make of people comparing your character, to a young president obama. I think its, obviously its an honor. Im, you know, as i said before, ive never been on a show such as this, where, you know, i have no where had what the character is going to do from episode to episode, so im already more distracted with that, just wondering, you know, how my character is going to interplay with the likes of licious. Im having a good time. After being on this show, have you learned a little bit about the Music Industry . This is kind of a glamorous version of it, but it is a cut throat industry. What have you learned about that particular industry . Oh, i dont know. I just know that whatever theyre doing or not show, its working because i was a fan of the show prior to being on it. Im going to be on it for a little bit longer and just the excitement. They really mix it up right. You know, they got the right ingredients because its, you know, you got the drama, the intensity, theres obviously the levity there, and then the musical numbers, you know, its all right. And then for them to be in a position where they can speak on whats going on socially as well. This show is right on time. You mentioned licious there in your previous statement. Now, i talked with the author of happy woman, happy world, about the working mom. She says the Research Shows kids whose moms work outside the home are more independent when theyre young, and they make more money when theyre grown. The women are in supervising roles, pushing harder, demanding more money, and make, compared to the group that is growing up with stay at home moms, 23 financial. Financially more secure because they just make more money. Now, the mens income in the study stayed about the same if the mom worked or stayed home. However, it did make a difference in how the men are with their own families later in life. This is like a winwin for everybody. The men are like youre not doing enough, but men who you are, you know, raised by working moms, they do take care of more of the household chores and tend more to family members, family care. Now, she also says working moms are forced to budget their time. That can also have very positive effects. The Research Shows working moms spend up to 7 hours more per week of quality time with their kids than the stay at home moms and then dont december pyre single parent despair Single Parents. Single parents teach something very important as well, that you can have a career, manage a business, a home, a household, and you dont have to have a partner. A lot of people depend on their success in life and theyre not a complete person unless they have a partner, and the Research Shows thats not necessarily true. I was raised by a single mom. I understand that point. Its very important to hear because as we talked about you feel a lot of guilty going back to work, and Single Parents have no choice but to work. It was face nateing. You fascinating. You and as i mothers, we watched our parents, im a working mom, my mom was a stay at home, i felt guilty about that. By going to work, im taking care of my family. End of story.
