Tuesday morning out there nice start to the post labor day. A big political day out there. New polls, people are talking about. We are nine weeks away to the president ial election, and these polls talking about how it is a dead heat. I cant believe were so close finally. We have been talking about it for three years. Well talk about that later in the newscast, one of the largest for Profit College chains is closing its doors. Itt Technical Institute announces its ceasing operations after half a century. Alex savidge is live with the reason behind the shut down. Reporter Accounting Practices described as troubling and the school is facing millions of dollars in sanctions to the feds and thats why the company that owns itt tech was forced to close down 130 campuses nationwide. That includes two in the bay area. This one thats in concord and another thats in oakland. These closures will impact more than 45,000 students across the country. 8000 employees of itt tech will lose their jobs. Now, this move comes after the government banned the for profit chain from enrolling students who use federal loans to pay for classes. Itt tech has been ordered to pay almost 200 million to cover student refunds. Now, the Parent Company of itt tech put out a statement a short time ago about this shut down saying in part, blasting the federal government, by the way, and saying in part, we believe the governments action was inappropriate and unconstitutional. Now, as for current itt tech students, they will, we understand, be eligible to have their federal Student Loan Debt wiped out. And again, thats a lot of students who will not have a place to go to school any longer. We have been here at the campus in concord for the last hour and a half. We have not seen anybody come or go from the school. Were going to be reaching out to students and employees, trying to talk with them about his sudden closure. And you said the loans would be forgiven. Any word if the students try to transfer the credit. Will the loans be forgiven or will they have to pay back the loans if they want the credit transferred to another academic institution. My understanding is under a certain clause, rules that the u. S. Department of education has laid out for situations like this, a sudden closure of an Educational Institution that anyone whos a current student at itt tech will have able to have their federal Student Loan Debt forgiven. That puts taxpayers on the hook for the money. Thats something that we should point out. We do understand that employees of itt tech, some of them at least will stay on during this transitional period, if you will, to help current students retrieve their records, and transfer onto other Educational Institutionings Educational Institutions if thats what they desire to do. During the morning commute, njudah line is usually packed with people trying to get to work or school. Some are seeing the trains empty. Thanks to a new Train Service up and running right now. Brian flores is joining us live in San Francisco with more on the new route. Hey brian. Reporter good morning, we are on church and dubos in San Francisco. Muni launched the first of the shuttle trains meant to help n judah line get on the train. Thats been a major problem for several years. Muni has essentially added two train cars that will do a loop from the embarcadero. This will run two loops around the route, 8 in the morning to 9 in the morning. The major complaint they heard is by the time the njudah got to the coal valley area near carl and stanton or carl and coal, the train would be packed to the brim. Because there was a turn away near ucf, that train will be able to pick up passengers likely be emptier train cars. When i first ran in 2012, people were saying 60 njudah, and the trains are coming next year from the njudah but we needed to do something now. For three years they have been working on the engineering in order to turn the train around sooner rather than later and thats what this is about and im really excited about it. If youre at church and dubos or backstop, sometimes we pass up over 100 people each morning. So this is critically needed for the first time people will get an empty train showing up just past ucsf. Now, the n line is munis busiest line. We should mention muni estimates 40,000 passengers ride the njudah on a daily basis. Many of them are packed to the brim during the morning commute. Supervisor says the project took about three years to complete. In fact, when we spoke with her this morning, she called this project a game changer. Guys, back to you. Brian, thank you very much. Sal, you were saying earlier, too, that these trains are packed, before they get to 19 19th avenue. People get on the train in the sunset, and by the time it reaches carl cove, its packed. They have to bypass people. What theyre doing is essentially starting a train in the area, for those people and taking them downtown, coming back, and they have been doing that a couple of times, just to ease the congestion. It will not affect you if you get on the train in the sunset district. Youre going to continue on as normal. Got it. Thanks sal. Coming up on mornings on 9. Millennials will make up 75 of the work force by 2025, and reaction is mixed. Up next, we are live with the cofounder of the petaluma young founders network. This is the new comfort food. And it starts with foster farms simply raised chicken. California grown with no antibiotics ever. Lets get comfortable with our food again. Seems to have taken over the country. T everythings all right in there . All natural, non gmo ingredients with vitamin d and whole milk. New dannon , natural is back. According to forbes magazine, millennials will make up 75 of the work force by year 2025. Millennials and supporters say this is great. Millennials are tech savvy, well connected and tend to be activists for things they care about. The flipside is some say my millennials tend top self entitled and selfcentered and this will be the demise of the work force. We are joined by an actual millennial. Nicole smart, thanks for joining us, nicole. Excited to be here. Glad to have you. First talk to me about why people have that negative connotation when you say, oh, shes a millennial. I think a lot of it has to do with media. And employers, there are millennials out there that we grew up in a world thats instant gratification. We get into the workplace, and we think were going to get success quickly. That doesnt happen. You know that, it takes a while to grow. We have been labeled entitled. Lazy. Less than stellar work ethic. But were the most connected generation. So because of that, is the future of our work force in good hands or not good hands. We are changing the way cultures are. More meetings and look at the innovation thats coming with millennials. You talk about innovation. What about other industries in the future, manufacturing or whatever it may be that we dont associate with millennials. Is there a concern about those industries as well. I think millennials are going to go wide and deep, and theyre going to hit all the industries and different job titles. Its helping them achieve the success. They have the mind set that they will be successful right away. They want the Corner Office seat, and thats not necessarily true. So thats why i wrote my book. Nicole, a lot of bosses are still boomers, right, the millennials have to make a connection. How does the millennial make the connection with the boomer boss. Absolutely. I think its understanding one another. Millennials are looking for purpose. They want to be connected. They also want to be part of the conversations. Dont talk with us at us at us, talk with us. When we hire anyone, baby boomers, we outline their professional goals and personal goals and talk with them how that can fit in with our company, and how that can also help them achieve what they want. I know a lot of millennials and theyre hard charging. They work long hours. Theyll stay at the office past the catered dinner they get. My question is when you find yourself in a situation, where youre married, a couple of children, other responsibilities outside of the office, can that hard charging work ethic keep up with our real life. I think it can. I think its about time management. Its about balance. And not everything is, you know, if you love what you do, and you have your family, calendar it. What appeals to them in a company, millennials, would you say. Free food. Top three things. They need to recruit, these Companies Need to get the best millennials in there. They want to make a difference, a big impact. Its a purpose. Being in a company that they can connect with one another, and they have a voice. And then a company that cares about them. They want to feel appreciated. They want to feel valued and they probably have the same insecurities and fears that every worker does regardless of the fact that we may see them, oh, gosh, shes perfect, she can do no wrong. Especially with being constantly labeled lazy and entitled. Thank you for coming in, and youre an author, two ts many smart, double smart. Thank you for the conversation the. Thank you so much. We talked a lot about the fact that there appears to be more support for the black lives Matter Movement, a number of groups shut down freeways. People get upset, protesters have gotten the message across. I think people are more conscious to see potential inconveniences and fix them first. However, mickey says seems like it these days, our society especially in the bay can be reactive versus proactive. 510 oaktown says you have to be inconvenienced to question your own thoughts and prejudices and i got a couple yeses from a bunch of people. We are learning more about former 49er, bruce miller. He posted bail and then went back to his home in santa clara. The Team Released him early yesterday afternoon. We have some Surveillance Video showing him bloody and Walking Around before his arrest in San Francisco. Ktvus Azenith Smith has more on what happened and the charges hes facing. Reporter Surveillance Video shows bruce miller staggering into the motel around three in the morning. A close up shows blood on his face. He puts his head down several times and is seen lying on the stairs. His drunken appearance catching the attention of a clerk who had nod idea he was a 49ers player and called 911. He was wasted, really intoxicated. The suspect came from the marriott is bruce mill. Police showed up, ultimately arresting miller. Officers say it began when the 29yearold tried to get a room at the Fishermans Wharf marriott, he entered the room of a 70yearold man. When the mans 29yearold son confronted hem. Miller allegedly attacked the son and punched the father. Police caught up with miller at the travel lodge across the street, booking him for assault, threats and battery, he then posted bail. At his santa clara home, his roommate answered the door. Its an Ongoing Investigation so we dont want to say anything. Reporter are you 49ers faithfuls. Some fans we spoke to say they are not surprised about the arrest, and off the field behavior like that should not be tolerated. It sounds terrible, im sure they made an accurate decision based on the information that they had. I would agree that Something Like that should not be accepted in terms of a professional environment. I dont know all the details of why he was released in terms of if there are other factors. But in terms of hitting a 70 yearold person, that shouldnt go unpunished. Azenith smith, ktvu fox 2 news. This isnt the first time miller was arrested. Last year he was also accused of shoving his then fiance, and then destroying her cell phone during a fight at the river mart plaza in santa clara. He pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace. Now, ktvus Tara Moriarty was the first reporter to break the story. She joins us live from outside the hall of justice. Some people are saying the bruce miller in this story, nothing like the miller chef known in the 49 they have noun in the 49ers locker room. I know you spent time working on the story. Do the father and son involved in the alleged assault, what story are they telling you. Reporter they havent spoken yet. I believe the father is still in the hospital, and the inspectors are speaking to them right now. They havent made their identities known just yet. Can you imagine, you go most likely on a trip, they were visiting here in San Francisco, and you wake up out of a dead sleep and get knocked out cold by an nfl player when youre 70 years old. So obviously just a horrible night all the way around for everyone involved. We do know that the father suffered broken bones in his face, so again, you know, hes most likely still recovering from that. We havent found out specifically which bones he broke. Miller didnt get off without a scratch. We obtained this booking photo, and you can see he has what looks like kitchens across his forehead. Like stitches across his forehead. What everyone is talking about, of course is bruce mill, how could he do such a thing. Ktvus sports anchor, joe fonzi put it nicely when he said miller is actually a leader on the team, always very cordial in the locker room, down to earth. So fonzi was shocked, but he says, you know what, i guess this proves you never really know someone. And as far as his future nfl career, fonzi seemed to think it was pretty much over. Miller was a marginal player who fought to stay on the team. As far as him being in high demand, those days are pretty much over. Interesting to see him in uniform and on the screen in the Surveillance Footage that you were able to find, we could see him stumbling around, bloodied up. What about the hotel clerk. Have you had any conversations with the clerk who was there that night . We got the video from the hotel clerk, and you know, he had no idea that miller was some famous Football Player and everybody said why was miller at the travel lodge. Apparently he had gone to the marriott first, was trying to get a room there. Was told theres no room available. He went over there to check it out. The clerk said he never made contact with miller at that point. Then miller goes back to the marriott. Thats when the fight happened. When he runs off, he stumbles back to the travel lodge where he can be seen sitting on stairs, throwing up. Clerk went over to him, saw him bleeding, asked if he needed anything, offered paper towels, miller said no thanks, im fine. The clerk told miller that he had to go because he was on private property and when he didnt budge, that is when the clerk called 911. He said he knew miller needed help, but again, no idea that he was even famous, and then we actually spoke to some people at the palm house restaurant and bar which is where miller had spent a lot of time with his buddies drinking, apparently all day, and when i spoke to the employees, they rolled their eyes when they said miller was hammered, obviously he must have been in really bad shape by the time 3 00 rolled around, and thats when all this stuff happened. A lot of different angles. Tara moriarty outside the hall of justice. Thank you very much. Now to the east bay where a new mural is celebrating the diversity in hayward. Little did he or the other crew members realize they were on what would turn out to be a historic and tragic voyage. In one of the ships hangars are large wooden crate. That marine guard on it at all times. We could not go near this thing. Reporter inside the crate, the nuclear bomb that would be dropped on hiroshima to hasten the end of world war ii. The ship was ordered to the philippines. Bray was sleeping under a gun turret in the dead of night when the ship was attacked. The first torpedo hit right on the opposite side of where i was sleeping. And rolled me off the ledge of a 10foot drop. The ship was already sinking pass bray scambled for a life jacket and head for the quarter deck. Thats where i jumped off, and i was still 30, 40 feet off the water, and when i hit the water, somebody hit me and drove me down, and i happened to open my eyes and looked up and the moon was out, and there was a big ship coming down on top of me, but it was oil slick in the water, and i looked back at that time and she was up on her valve, going down. In 12 minutes, the ship was gone. Bray found a floating cargo net in the oily water, something he would cling to for the next four days and five nights. Of course the sharks showed up pretty soon after we hit the water, but they were there all the time. The thrashing survivors and bloody water no doubt attracted the sharks. The dead and injured were first to be hit. The first couple of days, those guys never lasted very long. It was all the time, day and night, the sharks were there. Yeah, theyre never gone. But they werent always attacking. You could look now, and see them swarming. Ray says he thinks his dark navy dungarees kept sharks from going after him even though they nipped at him. The exact number of men killed by sharks is hard to determine but its considered the worst mass shark attack in history. When the sharks werent biting, some men were going delirious from thirst, drinking oily sea water. Guys were floating around with their mouth open and theyre full of sores and their tongues saleswoman tongues swollen up, it was swollen up. And guys would swam away, but theyll feed you but you cant get on or Something Like that, and then they would swim away, and never see them again. So they were hallucinating. Oh, yeah. On the 4th day a navy plane spotted the men and a rescue ship arrived on scene. They pull up alongside, and threw a Jacobs Ladder over the side, and said can you climb up sailor. I said hell yeah, i couldnt even lift my arms out of the water. Two guys jumped in and got me out. For the next two or three days, he fell into a deep sleep as the ship headed to a Navy Hospital in the philippines. The guy woke me up, cleaning the oil out of my eyes and i grabbed his arm, and i can remember him saying, its okay sailor, and out i went again. Bray says he lost 30 pounds during the ordeal, and probably would have died in two more days. Out of 1196 men, just 317 survived the torpedoes, the sharks, the elements. I dont remember ever thinking about not making it, but you know, when youre 17, 18 years old, you dont think about stuff like that. After the war, bray became a Benicia Police officer, long retired he now speaks to audiences about his experience on the indianapolis, often at schools where many have never even heard the story. And its really amazing how little they talk about it in schools. Reporter there are now barely 2 dozen indianapolis survivors still alive. Harold bray now 89 is the youngest. I feel like im one of the lucky ones. We lost a lot of guys. We lost 880 guys within that five days. They say that 900 of us got in the water, and 300 got killed instantly. Next july, bray will return again to the city of indianapolis to reunite with his fellow survivors until there are none. In benicia, ken wayne, ktvu fox 2 news. Wow. Four days, five nights. Not just being physically tough, but the mental toughness to go through that ordeal, and survive. And to retell that story to so many people, spreading his word, an incredible man.
