We know San Francisco police today are investigating a smashandgrab burglary that happened at an antique store. It happened early this morning on jackson street. Thousands of dollars worth of antiques were stolen here. Ktvus Paul Chambers just received some new video from inside that store. Reporter it appears it was a smashandgrab robbery here today. Let me show you, this is where the criminals went through. The window is boarded up. On the other side is the case where they stole the items. They are estimated at 35,000. This happened in the 400 block of jackson street in San Francisco. Take a look at these photos. So far these are the items that are reported stolen. One is a set of four georgian sterling candlesticks dated to 1771. A covered butter dish, and a sterling silver picture and service set. The owner fears that the criminals may take the items, melt them, and sell them. One thing the criminals left behind is this flashlight, which is still on. If you know anything about this case or this situation, youre asked to call San Francisco police. Paul chambers, ktvu fox 2 news. Well, this morning bart police are investigating whether its officers used Excessive Force while arresting a robbery suspect last week. That 22yearold man was arrested inside the embarcadero station in San Francisco on friday afternoon. At least two witnesses posted video of the arrest online claiming the suspect was treated unfairly by the officers. Bart says those officers were wearing body cameras during the arrest and that that footage is going to be used as part of an investigation into this incident. Later this evening a Panel Discussion on policing the police is being held at glide Memorial Church in San Francisco. It will take a look at the use of force by Police Officers across the country as well as recent recommendations made by San Franciscos Blueribbon Panel. That panel was created in may of last year by District AttorneyGeorge Gascon to investigate things such as police use of force as well as the culture of the Police Department and internal discipline measures. Recently, it released a long list of recommendations to improve accountability, fairness, transparency, and oversight. Last week here on the 9 we spoke with dr. Joseph marshall, a member of the San Francisco police commission, about those recommendations. I think when folks look at, you know, the list of things that they are recommending, and we are going to take everything to heart because we want to do that, you are going to see a lot of things have already been done and they were in motion before the Blueribbon Panel started. So we are going to keep going, keep moving forward, and i want folks to understand that that has definitely happened and will continue to happen. We asked him if there was anything specific that had been recommended the department is already doing. Use of force was the biggest one. Use of force. You know, they made some recommendations specifically about, you know, getting a use of force policy. We had done that. Its a very, very good policy, and i think thats the biggest thing. Again, its a long list of recommendations. Well look at them and we will see. But i think thats the biggest one that folks got to understand, that thats a new way of doing policing in San Francisco, and at the heart of it is the policy that you use. And we changed the policy. This morning here on the 9 we are joined by two members of this evenings panel. We welcome w camel bell and judge la doris kordell. Thank you both for joining us. Sure. First, can we talk about the fact that one of the overriding themes of the report was that there exists a bias towards people of color. How much of the conversation do you expect that aspect to control tonight . Ill start with you, judge kordell. Thank you. Tonights program is really going to be interesting, and it is absolutely timely. We are certainly going to be focusing on policing and policing the police, and we are going to look at specific findings made by the Blue Ribbon Panel and im holding up the report that was issued. There are 81 recommendations in this report that are preceded by findings that we made over a course of several months. So we are going to be talking about one big issue, im sure, and that is bias. Racial bias in policing. So, for example, in San Francisco, africanamericans are 6 of the population, but in terms of officerinvolved shootings from 2010 to 2015, africanamericans were the victims of 20 of officer involved shootings. Also disparities in stops, searches and arrests with represent to race, African Americans and latinos in San Francisco. I want to stress San Francisco is not unique, that this issue is a pervasive one around the country in Police Departments. You have been on the 9 before. You shared your own story of what happened to you at a coffee shop in berkeley where you were unfairly treated because of the color of your skin. If i can ask you, is there anything that can come out of tonights discussion that might change peoples minds individually who feel as though they have been targeted either by a waitress or by a Police Officer because of their skin color . I mean, i dont know if we can accomplish that in one evening. Thats a pretty big goal. I think we have to get used to having this conversation. And the thing that troubles me about this is the police have to be in the room for the conversation. And the active police members. I think thats the biggest thing. Until either the current members of the police understand that this is a real conversation that needs to be had, i feel troubled by hearing mr. Marshall talk as if he is like, we will accept some of the things, but were going to look into it. These are real issues. Thats why people are talking about defunding Police Departments. If seems like if you are not going to treat the community well, the federal government should not invest funds in you. The police union called your panels 81 recommendations a Kangaroo Court and essentially came out and said well look at it. How did that make you feel when you got that response . Well, i am sad to say that i wasnt surprised. I am certainly decision pointed by the response. Before the ink was dried, the police union gave a thumbs down this report. Officers in San Francisco, they were asked to participate in this program, to be on the panel, and that didnt happen. So thats very, very sad and it shows that there is a resistance and we are going to have to work to knock down that resistance. Tonight is going to be a major step in trying to do that. One of the things we talk a lot about is skin color. Is race. Do we talk too much about it . Do we not talk enough about it . No. I think, i mean, maybe people in my Community Talk too much about it. But i think as a whole, as a country we have never had a National Conversation on race. Every time, you know, even president obama tried to initiate that conversation when he got to the white house, talking about the officer who arrested him, and he got pushed back so much that he had the officer over for a beer on the white house lawn. Until we are brave enough to have a National Conversation on race that involves everybody, we are going to be having these little conversations on race that arent powerful enough. I think its indicative of the fact that the police feel powerful enough to say no to an invitation about a panel about better policing in San Francisco. They feel they can say no to that and its not a problem. We have given them too much power and too much respect. Your report recommendation, among many other things, better training, tracking and discipline of Police Officers. How long do you think Something Like this will take to achieve . Weeks, months, perhaps years . So i am not quite clear. Are you asking about the training for officers . The implicit bias training . I am talking about the training. I am talking about the tracking of officers actions and im talking about the different discipline tactics that you recommended in your report. Right. So there were a lot of, as i said, 81 recommendations. My view, all of them should be implemented, and there are some that are more important than others. The training of officers, getting them to more relate to the community, which Means Community policing, which basically means Police Officers need to be out of their cars all day and need to be walking the community and getting to know people. So all of this is going to take time. But i will tell you all of the recommendations, if they are implemented, they are doable in our lifetime. We just have to get cooperation on both sides and Community Police politicians, Everybody Needs to be involved in making this happen. Clearly, a lot of interest. A soldout program tonight at the commonwealth club. I thank you both for joining us here on the 9. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Again, it is a sold out program tonight. We are learning more about the two emeryville Police Officers who were almost hit by gunfire a few days ago. They were on foot patrolling the area near pixar studios when they saw a bullet ricochet off the ground near them 8 00 friday night. Police found a 9millimeter bullet lodged into a nearby building. No one was hurt. A little while ago, this morning on mornings on 2, Emeryville Police chief Jennifer Tejada told us she didnt think the shooting was targeting her officers. It just illustrates that, you know, we have to be vigilant. We have to protect our officers. Make sure that they have the training and the equipment to protect themselves. We are operating in a climate where they feel like there is a target on their back. So even though this was what i believe not targeted at them, its just a reminder of the dangers of this profession. Later this week on wednesday, chief tejada will fly to washington, d. C. To be at the white house. She will be talking about policing strategies with other Police Chiefs from all over the country. Its been a weekend of backlash over Donald Trumps comments following the speech at the Democratic National convention from the father of a fallen muslimamerican soldier. If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably maybe she wasnt allowed to have anything to say. Plenty of people have written that. Thats trump speaking out this weekend. In addition to that issue, trump is speaking out about the schedule of the upcoming president ial debates. Kristin fisher has the latest from washington, d. C. Reporter we are now less than 100 days away from election day, which means that from here on out its about the battleground states. Right now the latest polls show trump and clinton deadlocked in states like ohio and pennsylvania. Donald trump is kicking up bipartisan backlash on the first full week of the general election campaign. His comments about khzir khan who attacked him at the dnc are being criticized by everyone from the Republican Leaders of the house and senate to Hillary Clinton, who was asked about this controversy repeatedly yesterday on the campaign trail. And then to launch an attack as he did on captain khans mother, a gold star mother, i dont know where the bounds are. I dont know where the bottom is. Reporter as clinton wraps up her two day bus tour through ohio and pennsylvania, trump is preparing to hit the same states today. His campaign is also planning to meet with the commission on president ial debates after trump complained that two of the debates are at the same time as nfl games. You know, Hillary Clinton wants to be against the nfl. Like she did with bernie sanders, where they were on saturday nights when nobodys home. Reporter but the bipartisan Debate Commission is pushing back. They claim the schedule has been set since september, and so was the nfl, who trump claimed sent him a letter. Over the weekend a spokesman tweeted out that, quote, while wed obviously wish the Debate Commission could find another night, we did not send a letter to mr. Trump. The first debate is two months away. Something else to watch out for. A possible october surprise from wikileaks. Its founder said it will release more documents about clinton sometime between now and november. In washington, kristin fisher, fox news. Donald trump is also denying he has any relationship with russian president Vladimir Putin. He did that during an interview with george stephanopoulos. I just want to clear this up because you did say on three different occasions you had a relationship with him. Now you say there is none. I dont know what it means by having a relationship. I mean, he was saying very good things about me. I dont have a relationship with him. I didnt meet him. I havent spent time with him. I didnt have dinner with him. I didnt go hiking with him. I dont know i wouldnt know him from adam except i see his picture and i know what he looks like. In the past, donald trump has praised the russian president , and Vladimir Putin has called trump bright and talented. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange says his organization will protect its sources and will not reveal how or from whom it received internal Democratic Party details. Those emails indicated the dnc favored Hillary Clinton and possibly undermine bernie sanders. The nearly 20,000 emails led to the ouster of the dnc chair congressman Debbie Wasserman schultz. U. S. Officials say the russians were behind the hack. Clinton says that that would amount to russian interference in our elections. We would not tolerate that from any other country, particularly one with whom we have adversarial positions. And for trump to both encourage that and to praise putin despite what appears to be a deliberate effort to try to affect the election i think raises National Security issues. Assange responded to clintons statements saying she, quote, is auto trying to undermine our publication, trying to draw attention away from the fact that she conspired with Debbie Wasserman schultz, her former Campaign Manager who was head of the Democratic Party, to subvert an election in the united states. The riders who found it say it was fastened to the ground with 7inch spikes. The rider reportedly took it om so other Mountain Bikers wouldnt get hurt. Its unclear this morning who left it there or how long its been there. In terms of this bigger issue, some say its about sharing the trails between Mountain Bikers, hikers, and horse riders. We understand sharing the trail has been a point of contention to certain degrees for years. Its really a shame because were so fortunate to live here in this place where there are so many open spaces that we can enjoy. I am a Mountain Bike rider, a road rider a horseback rider, and a hiker. This year driving skills for life introduced the global tour to help teach new drivers how to be good drivers and make good decisions while they drive. They use free handson ride and drive courses and classroom material. The course focuss on handling the car, recognizing hazards, speed, and space management. So far driving skills for life has reached 800,000 new drivers of all ages. By the end of this year, it will have reached 1 Million People in 35 countries. Now, one of the additions this year is called the drug driving suit. Right. This new suit helps teach people the dangerous effects of driving under the influence of illegal drugs. There is a graphic here. It comes with weights that go on your neck, your elbow, your wrist. Those weights restrict your movement. They also alter your sense of balance. You also pop on a pair of glasses that give you that blurred tunnel vision you would get if you were truly under the influence. Sound familiar, alex . Yes. A couple weeks ago ford brought us the drug suit to ktvu and they came by the station and had me try it on, as you can see from these photos. We took a little ride around the parking lot. I got behind the wheel after putting on this suit. It mimics the effects of what its like to be under the influence of drugs like cocaine or heroin or ecstasy. And it was quite an experience. I mean, first of all, i could barely i honestly could buckle my seat belt and get in the car, let alone trying to drive around the parking lot. We took a ride around the parking lot. I was very careful. Were you near my car . Which one is yours again . , no, no. We went slow through the parking lot. It was amazingly challenging. You have tunnel vision, so you cant see on your periphery. I had these weights. Making any movements with the Steering Wheel was difficult. Its hard to imagine someone going at freeway speeds in that kind of condition. And the difference here is that you are driving and you know you are impaired. Right. You were taking it easy. Sure. There is selfawareness of that. You are not the person leaving the party at 2 00 who says i can get home, this is not a problem. Your awareness changed what you were doing, along with the weights and the vision . Absolutely. Yeah. Exactly. Thats a good point. I put the suit on and i know in my mind that i am sort of under the influence, so to speak. But i am being much more cautious as im driving. Youre right. Someone who is actually under the influence or is high on drugs and behind the wheel, they are not going to have that same level of caution that i did when i was doing my spin around the parking lot. Very eyeopening. Very similar to what we have seen with the drunk driving. Right. With the texting and driving. We have had those stories on ktvu where you try to send a text and see how it impacts your time to react. Sure. We have put much more information about the ford driving skills course for you on ktvu. So we started off trying to find the best vineyards, get the best team, put it all together. It took us 20 years. Then guess got a perfect score. Now i have two. Maybe more to come. That is great. Even the winery itself, and we were talking about it, one of the most beautiful locations. The setting for it, it goes with this perfect score. Thank you so much. I mean that. So wine is about so much more than whats in the bottle. Its about the experience. Its about the memories that go into it. And so we really try hard to make our wineries, when people come visit us for hall and walt, which is our pinot noir brand in sonoma, we want to make it fun. The title of the book, a perfect score, have you two 100s. Thats great. Other people say i hate the facts that people are choosing a wine. Oh, this 96 must be better than this 89. Do you think we focus too much on that score . Well, only when my wines arent a perfect score [ laughter ] yeah. Actually, i think that you look at a lot of Different Things when you choose a wine. You look at the price. You look at the maker. I look at the label to see if its pretty. I mean, i am just being honest. Right. But if you dont really know much critics have very good pallets. They look at a lot of wines. They do it blind. So im guided by scores in many ways, too. What would you recommend to somebody thinking about getting into this business . What have you learned over the years . Oh, my gosh. Its a journey of love. I would recommend it to everybody. Thats a lot of what we talk about in the book. So this is a perfect score. The art business and soul of the wine business. And its a journey thats wonderful into this lifestyle as well as the business. This is a business that is a business, but its also art. Its about agriculture. Its about local politics. Whats the most challenging thing from a business standpoint . The flexibility. So you dont always get a perfect climate on a harvest. You dont always have good luck. You have to be very agile in the way you sort of make a wine every year. And then you just got to have a lot of luck and you got to have a fabulous team. Katherine, as we wind down, can someone who is not an expert really get something out of the book as well . Thank you for asking that. Absolutely. I mean, this book is, you can learn about wines. You can learn about how to taste wines. You learn about the people behind the wines and all of that. But absolutely. Wine is a lifelong journey. And the more you learn about it, the more you read about it, the more you enjoy it. I am hoping that a perfect score does that for the people who read our book. Do you ever long for the quiet days of napa valley when you started . That scene has changed in the time you have been doing it. It has so changed. Its still very peaceful.
