I was. Yes, i always am. Along with gasia and alex in for mike, i am Sal Castaneda. Welcome. For the third time in less than week, there has been a new chief in charge there is a new chief in charge of the Oakland Police department. Mayor libby schaaf replaced chief wentz to chief fairow. The mayor received information that caused her to lose confidence in fairow. That information was that fairow once had an extramarital affair with a subordinate. The mayor said the background check went too fast. Several Oakland City Council members say its regrettable and a clear sign of failed leadership within city government. New acting police chief Paul Figueroa is looking forward to making positive changes. Obviously, there is some things that need to be addressed within the department. I can tell you the next few days are critical for us. I am solidifying the daytoday operations for the department. Acting chief Paul Figueroa rose through the ranks as starting as a police cadet in 1991. Joining us now is Crime Reporter henry lee. Its shocking really that yesterday just through my day just looking at the tweets its like oh my gosh, all over again. When is it going to stop . We had three chiefs in a week in 2013. It is deja vu. The question is, who is going to lead the department. The mayor says she wants an outside candidate to come in. And the question is, who is that going to be . Its hard enough to be a cop in this town. Who wants to be police chief here in oakland . Lets talk about this affair that got ben fairow put out here. Is in the first time this affair has come to light now . And why did it come up a week late after this background check . I have had cops tell me that some of them knew about this. Others did not. Certainly, it came to the fore in mayor schaff picked fairow to lead this department on an interim basis. Obviously, its the epitome of hipocracy if you had fairow, who admitted to having an affair, leading the department when its dealing with a sex scandal. We talked about this. The amare apparently referenced the fact that the background check process was too fast. I think what fairow did wouldnt have come up in a background check. Am i right . Yeah. I mean, the question is, you know, a lot of this has to do with private activity that doesnt necessarily impinge on your work as a Law Enforcement officer. We saw the statement from chief Kenton Rainey from bart police saying this does not impact his duties as a batter deputy chief. The question remains though, when you have the private life intersecting with your public duties, thats a big question. So it doesnt preclude him from working for the bart Police Department. In terms of working for the Oakland Police department, the mayor feels it does preclude ben fairow from holding that job . Thats what she told us last night. Okay. I did want to ask you one more thing about the Police Department going forward, henry, because it seems as if the sex scandal keeps growing. Is there going to be an end to the sex scandal, and are we going to be able to, is oakland going to be able to right the ship . Is this all we are going to find out . I hope that this investigation will come to a close. The key thing, looking forward, can we recruit and hire quality candidates . Young cops are get nothing trouble. So thats why john burris and mayor schaff want to make sure that we pick the right officers. Are we moving too fast. They want 800 officers in the city next year. They need to make sure that candidates are top notch. Paul figueroa is in now as the police chief. He has been with the department a long time. You know quite a bit about him. Doesnt sound as though the mayor wants to have someone like him, an insider, keep that job. Do you think he would make a good chief long term . He might. Mayor schaff wants someone from the outside. Paul figueroa was passed over in the first place to be interim chief when schaff named fairow. So clearly its going to be someone from outside. Then, of course, the rank and file is going to say this outsider, he or she doesnt know all the politics and we have had outside candidates who left in frustration. We were taking the temperature of oaklanders this morning. A lot of people are disappointing. They are frustrated. They dont like the fact that our city is back in the National Spotlight again, especially for Something Like this. Absolutely. Mayor schaff owned up to the mistake. Lets move forward and pick the right candidate next time. Do you suppose if she hadnt found out about this and then late ter comes out that ben fairow had these affairs, you know, three months later, do you think that would have been a crisis, too . Or do you think it would have been overlooked . I think they would have said why didnt you vet fairow more, you know . This is what the mayor said. I found out on monday, i talked to him tuesday, and hes out. She wants to take it slow. Do you think she rushed the vetting process in this case . We know that she and fairow go way back. They know each other when fairow was back at the opd in his previous work during the 21 years. So could that have clouded her judgment . Its possible. Now she is moving forward. Thanks for joining us this morning. We will keep talking about the points we touched on with henry lee. We turn to you. Following this latest shakeup within opd and the fact that the interim chief for a few days was let go because apparently an affair was revealed in his past, we ask you, should what you do in your personal life affect your professional life or your chances of success or your promotion . In this case, i dont think it was illegal. Perhaps some would say it was immoral. He is out of opd now. Bart Police Department, by the way, welcomes him back. Let us know. So let us know. Use the hashtag ktvufox2. Around9 20wewillread around 9 20 we will read your streets. Yesterday we were worried. He said, sal, go to bed early. I did go to bed early. Thank you for making me go to bed early u. Got good cheap, right . Yes. That it looks like this rain will stay in the north bay. There has been some. There will be more as well coming in late morning, early afternoon. But the system does not look like its going to dig. So instead its going to stay pretty much on a line from the golden state northward. Its just if it was any other time. Year, it would make a little more of a push to the east and south. It likes a north bay event. And there is rain beginning to move back in. Its picking up on the san mateo excuse me, on the sonoma coast and also on the marin coast. But south of that it is a pretty mild system, especially some pretty warm temps. Can you see there is decent cloud cover there and colder tops. Its heading to santa rosa and marin county. Its just moving in that direction. Now, it might drag across us late tonight and tomorrow. South wind at oakland. Thats a warm direction. Also coming up from the Santa Clara Valley south. Mountain view south. Sfo and Hayward South southeast. The temperatures on the peninsula are mild. Mid 60s stanford, menlo park, palo alto, montera. A balmy 63. If you are south, peninsula, east bay, south bay, partly sunny, warm conditions. North bay that system will give you a little bit of rain today. 60s, 70s. Depends if you are north on the cool side. If youre south maybe a tropical feel with that southeast breeze. Looks like this will be it for the rain. Tomorrow a mix of sun and clouds and everything says warmer to hot, you guys, early next week. You bet. Thanks. Today there will be a procession taking the body of San Jose Police officer Michael Katherman from the Santa Clara County Coroners Office to a funeral home. Katherman was the motorcycle officer killed in a headon collision while he was on duty tuesday afternoon. Coworkers say katherman adored his wife and two sons, loved his job, and volunteered with groups supporting Police Officers and their families. There is a growing memorial at the san jose Police Department that includes a motorcycle, flowers, and notes from children. I just asked him, what are you talking about . And then they said a Police Officer died. I think it shows the kids how much the officers are appreciated and supported and what they actually do for this community and what they do give up. Earlier this year, katherman participated in the 2016 Police Unity Tour in honor of michael johnson. The last San Jose Police officer to die in the line of duty. That ride ended at the national Law Enforcement officers memorial in washington, d. C. Now kathermans name will be added to that memorial. President obama and Vice President joe biden will be landing in orlando in just minutes here in the wake of sundays deadly mass shooting at a guy nightclub. We will bring you video once the president lands. Touring the visit the president and Vice President will meet with survivors, victims family members as well as first responders. Meanwhile, investigators are looking into messages that the gunman allegedly posted on facebook before and during the attack at the orlando nightclub, including, quote, you kill innocent women and children by doing u. S. Airstrikes. Now taste the Islamic State vengeance. This was an act of violence born out of hate that inflicted terror on an entire community. I call it a hate crime. I call it terrorism. Its both. The Senate Homeland Security Committee wants facebook to help uncover any clues the gunman may have left behind online. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, a mother grieving the loss of her daughter. Up next, a vigil for an east bay teenager whose life was cut short. Plus, her last words to her mom before her death. And the Investigation Continues into the death of a toddler who was dragged away by an alligator at a florida resort. Coming up, we will talk with the zoological manager about alligators and just how dangerous they really are. Stocks opened low and they have stayed there. At this moment. Dow is down by almost 100 points. Taking a look at the s p and the nasdaq, they are also low as well. Here at home San Francisco police are investigating a double shooting that happened in the citys Mission District at 17th and mission at about 2 a. M. Police say two men were sitting in a car when someone came up to them and opened fire. At this point, we know both men are in critical condition. Police say they do not have a detailed description of the gunman, but they are looking for a man and a woman that were seen driving away in a black sedan. Family and friends of a teenage girl shot and killed in downtown oakland tuesday held a memorial last night. People gathered at carter park to release balloons in honor of rejiney jefferies. Jefferies and other teens had just come from a memorial when suddenly there was gunfire. Her mother talked about how quickly her life was turned upside down. I called my daughter and was she okay . She said yes. I got a phone call she had been shot at 5 36. And here is some video of jefferies doing a praise and worship dance at the funeral for those two oakland boys who had drowned over memorial day weekend. This video was taken just hours before she was killed. A young girl who held on to jefferies that night tried to stop the bleeding, but the teen died later at the hospital. An autopsy is going to be performed on a little twoyear old boy who was dragged away tuesday night by an alligator at a Disney Resort in florida. We talked about this yesterday on the 9. Researchers have recovered the body of little lane graves yesterday afternoon. They say his body was intact and he likely drowned. At this point authorities have pulled out five alligators from the lagoon and they euthanized them for analysis. The nebraska toddler was playing in the water about a foot deep, we are told, when an alligator snatched the little boy and dragged him underwater. The boys father tried desperately but failed to wrestle the child from the alligators jaws. As a precaution, disney has closed all beaches, ferry boats and marinas until further notice. So many people thinking and talking about this story. Joining us on the phone from the oakland zoo is a zoological manager margaret rouser. Thanks for joining us. And ill start first with as horrific as what happened is, alligator attacks are actually fairly rare in florida, arent they . Well, they are fairly rare. However, alligators they avoid humans as much as possible. They are well known in florida to take dogs and cats and peoples pets. You know, prey is prey to them. Its not they are not looking at weather its a child or a dog are a cat. They are just they are hungry. Is there anything that you think needs to be done in terms of warning the public when they may be in a place where they will come in contact with alligators like we saw in this particular case . Do you think there is more that resort and an organization like disney can do in terms of trying to minimize the number of alligators in one particular area . Can that be done . I am not sure about minimizing the number of alligators. Alligators are native to florida. Thats their home. They have always been there. Its not a bad idea to warn people for sure. I think, you know, i lived in florida for six years, and florida natives are well aware of the alligators and they are well aware of staying away. Of course, its a big tourist attraction. Of course, you cant expect somebody from someplace else to have the same type of knowledge that a florida local would. Of course, they are not gonna understand what to avoid and how to stay away from things. What do you think disney is going to do or let me ask it this way. What would you do if you were in charge of that resort . Would you put up more signs . Would you make sure everyone who checked into the property got a verbal warning . That kind of thing . You know, i really dont want to speculate on what somebody else should do. I havent actually been to that lee resort. I dont know the layout. I really wouldnt want to speculate. I was surprised. This a grim detail. The fact that the little boys body was found intact, i guess the alligator didnt eat the child. It suspected that the child may have drowned. Talk to me about that. Reporter that actually is not surprising at all. Its very common for well, particularly largest. Large malleation who are solitary, to attack sort of larger prey. Its something thats too big for them to eat all at once. They dont take bites and chew their food the same way we do. What alligators do is grab a large prey item, drag it underwater, drown it, and then stash it and literally wait for it to start falling apart and then eat it. So thats actually very common alligator behavior when it comes to hunting and feeding. Okay. Thank you so much. For your help on this very topic we are tackling this morning. New this morning, more information is coming out regarding the death of former 49ers running back lawrence phillip. Prisons guard saw a do in the resuscitate note taped to his chest when he found his body in his cell in january. They ruled he had committed suicide. He was awaiting charges on killing a cellmate. Coming up here on mornings on 2 the 9, what i would describe as a dream assignment. I got to sit down with the head of the San Francisco opera as he prepares to step down after ten years. What we talked and sang, yes sang about coming up. And tough issues with laughter. Megan farset joins us live onset. Its time for us to check twitter and our question today was, should your personal mistakes affect your professional life . And we have some answers. We have many answers. I will add, this comes in response to the news we just got about the new Oakland Police chief is now out again because apparently an extramarital affair was revealed in his past. We asked you personal versus professional. Kevin triplet says affair for public officials, yes. If you like to forget to pay your electricity bill. What you do privately shouldnt affect your professional life unless you are a politician. Whats private should stay private. And curtis said, no, it shouldnt, especially when it happened so long ago. We like hearing from you on twitter. Use the hashtag ktvuthe9. Our next guest challenges stereotypes and takes on controversial issues if i can say that today with laughter. She is promoting a new book, how to make white people laugh. I like to laugh. The book is a blunt and hilarious manifesto about our concepts of black, white, muslim, and how they are defined in our culture. We are proud to have you joining us live on the 9. You are a standup comedian. How do you weave this together before what happened in orlando and now youre doing it after . Well, i mean, we have had a lot of incidents in the past where its already been difficult to be irani american and muslim in the united states. I think come december are really, you know, a great comedies are a great tool. You have a moment of vulnerability where you are opening and listening. Thats why shows like the daily show are so effective in getting information out there. Thats kind of why i use social justice comedy. Speaking of the daily show, they make a lot of this election coming up. Do you have thoughts on hillary and bernie and everyone . I did something on the trump phen phenomenon. Phenomenon. I went on the streets of new york city and i asked people, i called it the bacon test. And i asked people, are you muslim . If they said no, i would say prove it. They would have to eat from a pile of cold bacon in order to prove they werent muslim. If they didnt eat the bacon, they would go into a muslim registry, which looked like a bridal registry. Those are like the kinds of things i like to do. Test the actual proposals that are on the table and see if they are, you know, constitutional. All right. So the book is called how to make white people laugh. Whats the key . [ laughter ] a lot of banana peels. Lots of rubber chickens. I think, you know, the sort of side joke there is that, you know, white people control a lot of stuff like governments, space, the economy, game of thrones, war. And in order mine, in my view, its important to keep white people happy and laughing and lubed up because if they are they will start fewer wars. So thats kind of like the idea behind the title, is like its important to keep white people laughing. The other side joke is it turns out what makes white people laugh is what makes everybody laugh. I was laughing. Yes. [ laughter ] can i ask you, in your professional life you have clearly embraced, you know, who you are and you have used that in your work. At what point in your life did you really begin to embrace it . I was a little girl with a weird name all through elementary school. So what point did you make that turn . Well, its funny because i, like most iranian muslim females, have a masters degree in africanamerican studies. So like i was, you know, i grew up longing to be a part of the black community and i grew up in Southern California longing to be a part of the Mexican Community because they had recognizable culture. Classmates. Right. People could pronounce their names. So when you are a member of a severely underpopulated ethnic minute or minority, these groups arent my group but thats close enough. At a certain point i did realize like, oh, i am iranian american and i actually have am muslim and i do have this cultural background and maybe my voice could be useful in it somehow. I love it. Thank you so much for joining us. She is having a book signing in oakland at 7 30 at First Congregational Church on harrison. Tickets are 12. I apologize. I messed up your name. Reporter this is how David Gockley is saying goodbye to the San Francisco opera. [ singing ]. Reporter carmen, raw, sensual, and violent. A far cry in many peoples image of opera. From todays fiery carmen to the elegant madame butterfly of years past, as general director of the San Francisco opera, David Gockley wanted to throw open the doors of the War Memorial Opera House and shake up peoples perception of opera as elitist, stuffy, and stale. It pains me. It is an image i fought all my life. Reporter he did something no one had done. He gave away some of the worlds best opera for free in the form of live simulcasts where what was on stage was shown in High Definition on the big screen at at t park. Gockley considers opera at the ballpark a home run. There has been a migration slowly but surely of the group into the opera house downtown. Not to that stuff. But i sing all the time. I sing at home to my little boy. I sing everywhere. Really . I cannot sing at all, however. I figured this. As long as i am sitting across from the man who brought some of the best voices in the world to the bay area, lets get a singing lesson. One of my favorite songs from the musical oklahoma. Reporter what about show tunes . You. When i take you out into suri, when i take you out in the suri with a fringe on top, watch that spark and see how is shutters, when i drive in high step and strutters. Reporter i cant believe i am singing to David Gockley. I dont know the second verse. Reporter okay. But obviously, your voice works better in that kind of show bizey content. Reporter for people who love you. I am listening to kids, reading to kids. How valuable is that . Reporter when keith said this, i almost teared up. I will repeat what he said.
