Earlier. Ktvu fox 2s alex savidge has been checking the news feeds and wires this morning. He has the latest. There was no distress call from this egyptair flight. Whatever brought it down was sudden and brief. The Egyptian Government is suggesting this was a terror attack. Security officials are running background checks on all passengers on board to see if any of them had ties to extremist groups. Several countries are taking part in a joint search effort in the Mediterranean Sea to find the wreckage from the plane. A short time ago crews found two items in the waters off the coast of the greek island. They appear to be debris from egyptair flight 804. Egyptian Officials Say the possibility of a terror attack again far more likely than some sort of a mechanical problem, but they do caution against jumping to any conclusions. This plane, according to radar, made several abrupt turns, then lost altitude before it dropped off the radar. They could have had trouble with the controls. They could have had a loss of control of the aircraft because of an explosion. They have theories about what happened. However, we want to be professional. There were a total of 66 people on board. 56 passengers. 10 crew members. Among the passengers a child and two babies. There were no americans on board the flight. And you will remember just last year in october a russian passenger jet did crash in egypt after a bomb was set off on board that aircraft, and that likely will be one scenario investigators will pursue in this case, trying to find out if someone smuggled explosives. This will raise new security concerns for anybody planning to travel to or from egypt. This has been a troubling three years or so. There have been a number of odd incidents. Absolutely. Right between malaysia airlines, the copilot who committed suicide by crashing the plane in the mountains in the alps. It certainly rattles a lot of nerves, and its obviously going to raise questions about whether people are going to continue to travel to places like egypt. This is what i was reading a big blow to the Tourism Industry in that country. A lot of folks will say no thanks. You imagine that Airport Security in that region is just maybe tougher than here, right . Is that what we know . Well, i think that after you had that jetliner taken down last year, they ramped up security in a big way to try to make sure they screen as much baggage and cargo as they could to make sure explosives couldnt get on board. This flight left from paris and was on its way to cairo. Now you have to look at whether something was smuggled on board the plane in paris. They say they ramped up security. It remains to see how effective those efforts have been. You think cruising at 35,000 feet, unlike takeoff and landing and it should be. And thats why it appears as though a lot of the experts have really ruled out some sort of a mechanical failure because once youre at that altitude and the way this plane appears to have dropped off the radar so suddenly new york distress calls at all no distress calls, that indicates something happening suddenly, no chance to call for help. And clear skies, too. Weather was not a factor at all. All right. Thank you. Speaking of weather, lets check in with our weather in the bay area. Steve paulson. Good morning. Yes, one extreme to the other. Yesterday hot temperatures. 90s through the interior. Today a tumble into the 70s. Some of that fog has been wiped out. But big changes here. Jason says, man, we are getting married outdoors this saturday in oakland as. We thought late may would be safe. Usually it is, but this may does not look safe this saturday. It looks like there is going to be cooler conditions and maybe some rain moving in late friday into saturday. The big message today is the cooler pattern. 82 tuesday in San Francisco. Today 61. Tomorrow 60. Look at santa rosa, concord and san jose. 15, 20 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. Very strong low. That fog is getting chewed up. Look at the enhancement taking place to the north. Not the mid 70s right now. Its 50s and 60s. We had some 40s for lows. But that delta breeze is roaring for some. It is really cranked up towards bay point, fairfield maybe where you are. Sfo gusts to 35 out of the west. For some really windy. Its going to be a cooler pattern here. Look at that system digging into the west coast. I think thats going to give us some rain on saturday here. 50s, 60s, 70s. But those inland temps keep going down, down, down all the way into saturday and not much of a rebound. Just slightly as we head into next week. So big change, you guys, starts today. Thank you very much. Planet earth is on the record hot street and scientists expect that to continue. Federal Scientists Say the average temperature for the entire planet in april was 58. 7 degrees. Thats 2 degrees warmer than the 20th century average. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says global warm be and el nino conditions are pushing up global temperatures. The last time earth didnt set a new monthly record was april of last year. Thats the longest unbroken streak of new monthly records. We have more information now on a story our janine de la vega brought to us live yesterday on the 9. San jose police are asking for witnesses to help figure out why a minivan crashed into a Water District pond tuesday night killing the man inside. The man who lives near the crash scene discovered he had this Surveillance Video that shows a minivan running a red light and nearly hitting another car. The minivan conditions down the continues down the culde sac. Police are only calling it a rash at this point and say its not clear if there was an accident, perhaps a medical emergency, or if the driver was somehow under the influence. Just about, you know, someone losing his life for this. Cannot see the gate. Its dark. You see its a dark area, you know. The groundwater pond is managed by the santa clara Water District. Two weeks ago the pond was dry. Now there is four feet of water in it. The district says no gas or oil leaked from the minivan. New developments in the stand off other several misconduct by Oakland Police officers. The Police Department says two of the four officers placed on leave have now resigned. A published comment by donald trump is stirring up controversy in the bay area. Trump told the New York Times that solano one of the most dangerous cities in the world. He said there are traces in america that are among the most dangerous in the world. You go to places like oakland or ferguson, the crime numbers are worse. Seriously. Oakland mayor libby schaaf is quick to reply. She tweeted, let me be clear regarding the New York Times story. The most dangerous place in america is Donald Trumps mouth. Now, about half an hour ago mayor schaff came to ktvu and sat down with dave clark and i in the studio and she said she felt compelled to respond to donald trump, saying a city as great as oakland should not stand by and be insulted. Donald trump is a hater. He hates on imhe hates he hates on women. I am so proud to be in oakland and i dont want to let that type of mischaracterization go without a response. Mayor schaff told us while she is committed to working to make oakland an even safer city, there has been a dramatic drop in crime in the city with 39 reduction in gun violence, for example, between 2012 and 2015. This morning we want to know what do you think of trumps comments . Agree . Disagree . And do you like how mayor schaff handled it in her response . You can let us know on twitter using ktvuthe9. I asked why didnt she respond with facts and numbers instead of emotion. She said she was answering to more than that one line, about oakland being the most dangerous in the world. Not in the world, certainly in the rookie. It is among the top dangerous cities according to fbi staff. He responds with emotions. She fires back with her own. Had she cited numbers, we wouldnt be talking about it today. Apples Flagship Store is getting ready to open in San Francisco. Tara moriarty takes a look before it officially opens up to the public. Light fit feel free to enjoy. I bet you like having a 6 00 tip . I love it. Bring it on 7 30, 6 00 all time. Now tied up at one game apiece after the warriors won game two last night. Were good. We are trying to do the right thing. Our intentions are great. We are driving and kicking, all right . We are driving and kicking. Were good. Coach kerr doing the driving and kicking speech there. This play getting a lot of attention this morning. Andre iguodalas off the glass layup without looking. A little backyard basketball. Throwing it up. The team has a couple days off before heading to Oklahoma City saturday morning. Game three set for 5 00 sunday. Ktvu sports anchor Jason Applebaum joining us. Giants won seven in a row. The as four. But who is really watching . And then the sharks. The warriors are dominating. That play you just talked about andre, i think thats when the game turned around. You noticed that the thunder was up by a point or something at that point and then the warriors went on an 80 run to close out the half and never looked back. It ignited that 80 run to close the half like you mentioned. The place was quiet. You are thinking, uhoh, here is another game where the warriors are struggling a little bit to be the warriors that we know and then all of a sudden that play that you talked about. We will show it to you one more time. Cant see it enough. How did it go in . I dont know. Throws it up over his shoulder and it goes in. And youre right. I mean, that really was the key play. It was 5349. They just made their little run and it was right before the half and then, wow, look at that shot. I mean, here it is again. And the bench erupts. Its just incredible. Yeah. No. This game was just what the doctor ordered. Not only a warriors win, but a blowout win to kind of send a message to the Oklahoma City thunder, who had been playing fantastic, one of the hottest teams obviously in the playoffs other than cleveland, probably playing the best basketball. They are a real threat. But when they we talked about this yesterday, mike. The warriors need to punch them in the mouth. Punch them in the mouth. And win big. They were winning big on the road, you know, all through the playoffs, and they handled the spurs. So if it was a close game, i would be concerned about that. So it is nice to kind of with a bucket of ice cool them down and say, hey, dont forget about us. I want to mention something. If i were sitting at courtside, right . Steph curry comes towards me, i would become a human airbag. I would become like a human mattress. I would like. The human airbag . You would embrace his fall . What happened here . You know look at but there is the guy with the camera. Look at this. Catch him what are you doing . He is a franchise this guy is taking a picture. This guy is taking a picture with an oldschool camera. He is right there. My goodness. That was surprising. He came out and his elbow was swollen. At that point you think, oh no, not again. The game is obviously still in doubt. Steph coming off that knee and ankle. You see him laughing. He is like, hey, this is no big deal. He is a tough guy. After this, in the second half, the third quarter, thunder werent laughing at steph curry in the third. No. It was a seven point game. Then the curry flurry, as were calling it, turned a seven point game into a rout. A 20 point game. 152. Look at this. Shoots. Turns. The patented curry i know its going in shot. Its normal now, isnt it . Yeah. Out scored 152 by himself in less than two minutes. If you think about it, we talked about that 17 point overtime, thats a fiveminute session. 15 points in less than two minutes for steph here. It turned the game into a lapper. This is tense. The game was in doubt. They are down 10. Then he blew it open. Westbrook i got a tweet today from a viewer that said this sharks team, this sharks team that we have now, this year, is different from all the other sharks teams. Did you see that tweet . No. But people have been saying that. They are big. They are fast. They are deep. They are veterans. They have a lot of great players. We segue over to san jose, this is what its going to look like. 6 00 puck drop in san jose for game three. The thunder got what they wanted. A split. The sharks got what they wanted. A split on the road. So they will come home tonight. Looking to go up 21 in the series. The only real goal they needed. Game three taking on a different complexion. But brent burns, joe thornton, Patrick Marleau martin jones, man . Yeah. So look for this tonight. Its gonna be great. We will be live out there 4 and 5 00. The tank will be rocking. This team is different. They have never been 11 in a conference finals . Yeah. If they win tonight, thats the farthest the team has gone in the playoffs . Well, yeah. This is the fourth time to the conference finals. They have to get through the finals. Two wins, is what youre saying, in the conference finals farther they have been. Yeah. Three more wins away for the sharks and for the warriors. We have two finals. You have your hands full. Thanks, jason. As have won four in a row. With that, to you. Thank you, gentlemen. Thank you for your response. Thousands of dollars missing from an sfpds officers group. A veteran member of the force who spoke out is out of a job. That officer is now suing, claiming she was targeted for telling the truth. It started with missing funds from the pride lines. A San Francisco Police Organization that represents lbgt officers. Heather holmes broke the story. She has more on the claims filed against the city of San Francisco as well as the police chief. This is background here. The crime committed by a Police Officer. Reporter when San Francisco Police Officer pat purrly broke ranks and sat down with ktvu in 2015, she knew it was a risk. I dont understand why the Police Department itself wouldnt want know about it. Reporter at the time she asked us to hide her identity, afraid of what might happen for speaking out against fellow officers. Lets cover it up. Act like its fine. Protect the treasurer that did this. It is just outrageous. Reporter but she never imagined the backlash for blowing the whistle would be so severe. There is a big sense of betrayal. Reporter burley is no longer in hiding. She is speaking with the retaliation she says she faced for exposing a secret some didnt want her to tell. We did every other avenue to make sure justice was done. It wasnt done. Reporter she was a board member of the Pride Alliance for lbgt officers and suspected the organizations treasurer, mike evans, had embezzled thousands of dollars. Burley and others brought the issue of the missing money to the groups president , but says the lieutenant ordered them not to report the crime. She raised her concerns through the departments internal affairs division. Evans paid back the money and resigned. But burley thought he should face charges, and thats where the case stalled. We take an oath as Police Officers to uphold justice and that wasnt being done. It was it just wasnt right. Reporter frustrated with the way the investigation was being handled, burley decided to detail the allegations with ktvu. It turned out to be a costly decision. I came and spoke to you and then all of a sudden i am in trouble for misconduct, which i am not sure what the misconduct was. Reporter instead of being rewarded for turning in a dirty cop, she was the target of an internal Affairs Investigation and questioned about talking to the press. They showed me the video. Wanted to inquire if it was me or if i knew who it was. Reporter what did you say . Said it was not me because i feared i would lose my job. I would be terminated. I could lose my pension and benefits. Reporter you knew that she didnt think it would end her career after 22 years with sfpd. In february, a year after our story aired and four months after mike evans was booked on felony embezzlement and felony grand theft, burley was informed they were pursuing a case against her. The matter would be referred to the Police Commission for disciplinary action, including possible termination. The police chief greg suhr would agree to close the case with the allegations not sustained if she agreed to retire early. I am forced to retire because i went to the press about a Personnel Matter and an officer committing a crime and the chief did not like that. Reporter the chief said he couldnt comment citing pending litigation. He insists there is no tolerance for retaliation against officers. He said we encourage our officers to report any alleged misconduct by department members. Officers who become aware of any alleged criminal conduct have a duty to report such behavior without pause. I think there is no question she is a whistleblower. Reporter jamie walker is representing burley. She was retaliated for coming forward. This is information that another Police Officer wanted covered up, didnt want reported, and pat burley said not on my watch. Reporter walker says officers have First Amendment pretection against employer retaliation when speaking out alleged misconduct or corruption and this case is evidence the antisnitching culture in the Department Remains destructive. The fact that an officer was forced to retire, that they could have lost their benefits, that they were in an investigation because they reported another officer to the press, that chills a whistleblower from coming forward. Thats a lot of blood, sweat, and tears on that badge. Reporter instead of a taking her chances before the Police Commission, she took the chief up on his offer and retired on march 22. Its amazing the badge, what it represents and how much you feel like youre somebody with it, and then you take it off and i am still somebody, but i am not the same somebody. Reporter the veteran Law Enforcement officer grew emotional as she talked about life after the Police Department and about her decision to move forward with the whistleblower retaliation complaint. Burley says she spoke out because she felt she had to. It came at a great personal cost. With she believes was worth it. If you had to do over again, would you do it the same way . Would you have spoken out . I would have spoken out, yes. Now, heather reports that burley retired eight years before she was would have reached her maximum benefits, and she is now suing for lost benefits, back pay, and attorneys fees. She says the retaliation continued saying she might be added to the brady list, a list of current and former officers who may be suspect because of their troubles with law. All right. Switching to a new subject. On saturday apples new Flagship Store opens up in union square. Opens to the public. The new space on post is expected to be bigger and better than the old location on stockton street near market where it was. Ktvus Tara Moriarty it checking it out this morning. What can you see there . Well, its Pretty Amazing from the outside. It looks very, i dont know, appleish, i guess we could say. A lot of glass. In speaking with apple representatives they tell me this store is going to set the bar for all of the other stores that apple has across the globe. Right now they are being very hushhush about what products are being offered, but they say there are products inside the store that are going to be offered here and nowhere else. We will get a little bit more of an idea of exactly what they are talking about 10 15 this morning when one of the apple execs speaks. This store wont be open to the public until saturday at 10 00 in the morning. There is another apple store right now. Thats the one on stockton and mark. That one will be open until tomorrow. Friday it closes at 9 00. And then everybody will be coming here. I dont know if you can kind of see up here. Its a little bit difficult to see because of the glare of the windows. But there is a floor up there. Now, from the outside this building looks like its a threestory building, but in reality its two stories. Its light and airy and very, very high ceilings. Obviously, a lot of people excited. This is a prime piece of real estate on union square, as you can see. A great advertisement for anybody who comes to San Francisco for apple if they are looking to get those devices. Back to you. All right. Tara, thank you. All right. I have a question. How old is your oldest article of clothing . I have Something Like i do have Something Like 15 i mean, its got holes. What about keeping something for 30 years . Never. No . No, no. In good condition, right. Tom wants to change that. He is a 25yearold Fashion Designer. He is the ceo of a selfnamed Clothing Company with a tshirt he guarantees will have a long life, wont get damaged and wont shrink. Tom joins us live this morning on the 9. Congratulations. Thanks for coming in. Where did this idea come from . Is it your belief that you think people make tshirts these days intentionally to fail so that we, the consumer, goes back to the store in a year or two and drops another 20, 50, 100 . Yes, i think fashion retailers are making clothing so it will fall apart to keep you coming back and buying more. Its their insatiable greed that causes them to do that. As a result, they are ripping us off as consumers. They are putting responsible brands like mine out of business and causing irreversible damage to our planet. When i think of some of the companies that have been called out as being fast fashion, h m, some people say old navy, can you get a shirt for 12ers. Those people want to be trendy. Maybe i dont want to wear a shirt 30 summers from now. Are you concerned about that aspect of your business . No, because i believe that luxury clothing and new trends can be offered at accessible price points. But the price points that people like h m are offering are too steep. Its impossible to work in ethical pay and decent fabrics that will last even a fair amount of time at the prices that they are offering their clothing. Now, when it comes to wardrobe staples like a plain navy t shirt and a white tshirt that we offer, its not like you are going to be changing that up. Everybody has a white tshirt or navy tshirt. I wonder what happens to old clothes when, you know, you get a hole in it. You donate it. You throw it in the trash. Thats a massive problem. Fashion is currently the second most polluting industry after oil. We cant go on like this. I am not saying that you cant be fashionable and you cant be on trend. Why should you have to replace your white tshirt every two years because fashion retailers want to make more money . There is a better way. Go to our website if you want to find out more. I love it. I am a tshirt guy when i am out of the office. To me its cotton, right . This tshirt is 100 gotten . How do you guarantee three decades . Is there a specific way you make it . Well, we are able to make it so that it will last for 30 years really by going back. We use manufacturers who have been making clothing since 1964. They are based in italy. Its clothing that was made with exquisite care. We chose 30 years because the t shirts are shown to have a life span of 30 years. I knock on your door in ten years and i say i have a rip, i have this, you would give me a new tshirt . I would. But with aim to repair first. We are a sustainable fashion brand. Put up those pink pants you are wearing. This is proof that you can be sustainable and trendy. This is very hot right now. But yet those pants arent going to fall apart at the end of the summer . Exactly. You know, some wonderful people doing a lot of stuff for sustainable fashion, like collin firths wife. She says every time you buy something make sure you will wear it 30 times. But, you know, thats a good rule of thumb if you really like going shopping every weekend. I like the message a lot. Thank you for coming in and joining us here. I like the pants. I like the concept. Thank you. Congratulations. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9. We are talking about ping pong. Its not just a game for your kids or in your basement any more.
