A busy day between major changes in the weather and that mess on vta in san jose. Its like thunderstorming or something right now in the east bay. Lets go right to steve. A couple of heavy cells there, steve . Thats correct. In fact, this is the first of what i think will be many between now and saturday, you guys. So one started over livermore, as gas yeah and i talked about earlier. Many reports of hail in concord. Along ignacio valley road, 242, and then heading out over the strait and northward. There is another cell right over middletown in lake county. Reports right there of lightning. Calistoga. Thats one of many. Can you see the line that has formed right there. Concord, solano county, fairfield, maybe cordelia, napa, st. Helena, ukiah north. Thats the main focus right now. Unbelievable thunderstorms all morning long. Look at carson city, reno. That is going nuts. Also in truckee. This will be the theme i think a familiar one for about a couple of days. There is going to be some very heavy rain up there and many reports of hail and Severe Weather. Our low is now close enough where its going to keep us in the mix for not only thunderstorms here in the valley. There could be Severe Weather in the valley out of this system and that low is not going anywhere until sunday. Until then plenty to talk about. The giants are home. I know theyll play tonight. Tomorrow night could be different. More on that later. Developing news. A mans been on the top of a vta train in san jose for nearly eight hours now. We have had this story for you through mornings on 2. At this point it is still having a major impact on traffic in the south bay. Ktvu fox 2s janine de la vega live now. You just got an update from the Sheriffs Office . Reporter yes. A sheriffs spokesman just came to us and told us that the Santa Clara CountyProbation Department is sending a representative here because they know his background and they are hoping that they can help with the crisis negotiators that are here. He does have a criminal background. Hes been on probation for unrelated drug offenses. Behind me you can see the scene. There has been a team of negotiators trying to talk him down. You cant see him right now because he is actually lying down. And, i mean, negotiators all morning, they have been even offering him bagels and coffee. At one point he said he wanted to be warm and so they had moved their mobile van thats right next to the train closer to him, trying to say, hey, come inside. Get warm. But he never came down. Now, sheriffs deputies have told us they are going to wait this out. There is a lot of frustrated commuters on social media saying, why dont they tase him or spray him with a fire hose . I am told authorities dont want him to fall or get hurt. They say he has been despondent. Just highly agitated and maybe under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Authorities tell us that he is white man in his 20s and that his last known address was prune dale. Now, he climbed on the train at 1 20 this morning. Negotiators asked him why he did that. Here is how he has been responding to them. He is screaming and yelling. He is spitting at people. We asked him why he is up there. He says he wants to mess up everybodys commute. He is talking about military issues. We are trying to find out if he was ever in the military. Reporter the vta immediately powered down the electrical lines because the agency was worried about him being electrocuted. Thats why half the system is down. So it is having a big impact. For more information, im joined now with stacey ross, a vta spokeswoman. Can you tell us whats happening right now . We know there was a bus bridge and its affecting people from alum rock and Mountain View. The update on the transportation now is that we are starting to run two onecar trains between Mountain View and bay point. Previously we were only running a bus bridge from Mountain View to caltrain through silicone valley. We were able to get one more train through, as you mentioned. All of the lines are powered down on north first street. We cant get trains there. We can only push train at a time very slowly. We dont want toage state age state the gentleman on top. Train. We have the bus bridge that will run from bay point to other parts of the line up north. This is major impact. All of the trains are stored outperforming south of this location stored south of this location in the guadalupe yard. We apologize to our passengers. We have ambassadors at some of the stations. For the most part people are understanding. Obviously, its frustrating. They cant get to work on time. We are doing the best we can with bus bridges. Reporter thank you so much. Even if this gentleman does come down any time soon, there is going to be delays for them to get all the trains back into the vta system. You know, i do want to mention at one point there was another a media helicopter up in the air. It was so loud that we were told by the sheriffs deputies it was agitating the gentleman on top of the train and they couldnt even communicate with him. That helicopter has now moved out of the area because the negotiators had to bring in a bull thorn try to talk to him. Again we are going to continue here waiting to see whats going to develop here. But, you know, again, you know, eight hours hes been up here and, you know, just a lot of frustrated people that we have been hearing from on social media and even people, you know, just passing by because first street, besides the vta, first street is closed between charcot and trimble in both directions. So people have had to really avoid this whole area. First and component is the actual intersection behind me where the train is stopped. Back to you. Janine, i have covered a number of stories where i have seen individuals resist demands of deputies and officers and they have been tased. I mean, i know you briefly mentioned they dont want to do that. But specifically why not . Why not go up there and somehow get this individual down on the train and carry him off . Reporter they are saying for safety reasons. They dont want to climb up safety of him or the deputies . Reporter both. Both. They are telling me both. If there is a struggle, he falls off the train, they dont want to risk somebody getting injured. I am not sure at what point, you know, they make a change of plans. But they told us, hey, we are going to wait this out and they are hoping that person from the Probation Department hes really familiar with this mans background may help, you know, give them maybe another plan of action like, hey, why dont you try this . We just dont know yet. They havent given us another update of whats resulted from that. Thank you. A lot of people have the same questions and frustrations. He says, this is kind of ridiculous that one person can take down so much transit. Im probably going to have to walk two miles. A lot of other people, mike, are wondering why police are not more proactive ending the situation. Another tweet did san jose run out of beanbag rounds . Why cant they just go down there and get him . Our picture shows an empty street. But thats not whats happening in that area. Right . Its packed. Everyones coming up and its affecting the freeway traffic there. 101 is a mess because people cant exit. Its having a wide impact not only on people who take the train. People who are trying to drive to their jobs. I understand you dont want anyone to get hurts. At the same time, what about tomorrow and the next day . You dont want to set a precedent. Right. Staying in the south bay, police in san jose are staffing up for todays Cinco De Mayo celebration. They will have 30 extra officers patrolling downtown as well as the east side. The holiday celebrations had not started when some folks earlier this week cruised through the city carrying the mexican flag. Local Business Owners say they are actually worried about a repeat of what happened two years ago in a near riot broke out in downtown with visitors jumping on buses. Police made several arrests and shut down main street two years ago. People use Cinco De Mayo to do to harm others, you know. To come and just vandalize and fight against each other. And i dont understand. Cinco de mayo should be celebrated in mexico. Not here. The San Jose Police are bringing in officers from their metro and special op division along with a gang suppression unit. And heres a phone number you might want to save on your phone tonight. According to the examiner, San Franciscos supervisors are considering legislation that would require the citys vending machines to only dispense foods that meet mandated nutritional guidelines. No candy, unless its sugar free, and no chips unless they are baked. The legislation was amended to exempt the department of emergency management, and that includes the 911 emergency dispatchers. The reason . They wanted to continue to have access to Energy Drinks and that makes us think about you and how you feel about this. An Antioch Police officer is recovering after being shot last night while chasing a carjacking suspect into pittsburg. Now, police first spotted a black bmw reported stolen in bay point just before 6 00. Police chased the car to pittsburg when 15 minutes later the pursuit ended. The bmw crashed into several other cars at easterly land and love ridge roads. As police moved in on that car, the man inside started shooting, wounding a Police Officer and then other officers fired back. The suspect was not hurt, but did surrender. A witness who worked at a nearby gas station described that chaotic scene. I was ducking for my life because i heard shots. So my official and then i was telling people to go. Like everybody is on the pumps. I am like go everybody go. The police have not told us the name of the suspects. The wounded officer was treated at a hospital and later released. Several agencies, including the Contra Costa County d. A. s office are investigating. Police in piedmont are warning about a spike in robberies. They say groups of teenagers are targeting victims in piedmont and oakland stealing cell phones, backpacks and wallets. The police chief says five 17 yearolds, three girls and two boys, were arrested for a robbery on estates drive. They also believe they committed seven robberies in oakland within three hours. Can you talk about how low income students and families might struggle in the classroom as opposed to those who have ipads in every hand . I cant believe that fam i believe every family has the opportunity to have a great education. The zip code you are boring into or live in is one that defines your destiny because your education is defined by the school you are assigned to. We believe every student and family deserves to have a choice to go to a school that hold High Expectations for them that believes every student can grow and learn no matter what level they are coming into the classroom at and gets the support to be successful. Do you think families at times just kind of make this decision too quickly or assume that the Public School down the street is the school that my son or daughter needs to go to . Yeah. Well, we believe that parents with access to information can make a best choice for their child. But they are skipping that time to take time to get that information, you think . Well, sometimes they might not have access to it. And when we look data at the data, students from any background are achieving at high levels. The schools on this list are proving students from low income families are scoring highly on tests. Higher than 80 of students across the state. They are graduating. They are eligible for entry to the system at high rates. So were shining a light on these schools that are proving that regardless of the challenges that kids are facing outside of the classroom, that kids can achieve that high level. Do you see a common denominator in what these schools that you are honoring did that maybe the other schools havent done yet . These are schools that are, you know, as kate is sharing, really committed to the success of every single student. So there is a culture of High Expectations and community of support that surrounds each child and really helps each child reach its full potential. Principal wheldon, how important is parent involved in what is happening at school . Parent involvement is incredibly important. We believe we are a team and a family and every Single Person that a part of our communities, students staff and parents are incredibly need to be incredibly committed to our mission and that we want to bring them into all decisions around the students education and especially College Application process. Gasia just asked, not everyone has a good mom. If i am working two jobs and i am a single parent household, its hard to take a day off to drive to the field trip. We come to them. Right. Some of our teachers do home visits. We try to include every single parent in the school. We are mindful of the language they speak at home. Each student has an advisor they meet with four times with week. Its an important point of contact for the family. So what do you emphasize . What separates your staff, your teachers from other schools . I think our teachers are committed to do whatever it takes to make sure that kids are successful. They go above and beyond and they truly get to know each and every student and what their needs are academically, socially and emotionally so that they can support them individually. And make sure they get everything they need to get successful. It equates to success in college . Success means having a choice filled life. For many students that is success to college. We want them to be prepared to be successful for that because we know that College Degrees open up a number of different opportunities that not having one closes down for you. Alliance police got the suspects permission to go through the phone. They say the sheer volume of calls and texts for people asking for drugs is becoming a problem. They posted their request on facebook telling people the man was arrested and they were trying to retailed the texts, but everyone keeps calling and texting and its really annoying. One of the Hunger Strikers, he ended up in the hospital yesterday afternoon. We actually spoke to blackwell briefly at tuesdays protest at city hall. He seemed weak. One of five people who have refused to eat since april 21st in protest of recent police killings. I think i got out at the right time. Why do you say that . Sports changed a little bit. I am 48. I think it was time to think about doing some other things. Changed in what way . Some of the endorsements. Now there is a fight almost every weekend. Its a little bit different than when i came through. Tell us what its like to do your walk out and the music and all these are arenas full of people. The guy says randy you must miss that part, right . Well, you certainly feel every hair on your body in that moment. You never feel more alive than in that moment. Its a unique experience. I havent found anything quite like it. Take mibach to your days in the take me back to your days in the army. Did you fight . There was no fighting. I was in from 1982 to 1988. They figured out early on i could wrestle. I was an olympic alternate as a soldier representing the army in the 88 olympic trials. That led me to a College Scholarship at Oklahoma State and then started fighting after that. Not until 97. Where did you get the idea or how are veterans suited to do this, to be fighters . Is it something about being a veteran that has the mindset is there . I think part is the mindset for sure. There is a discipline and a focus and Warrior Spirit that comes with donning that uniform. Now with the combaters programs they have implemented in most of the military programs its very, very similar to jui jitsu. There is a fighters mindset in all of that. Its in line with the mission. So i think its something that a lot of guys are akin to and focused on. Do you talk to some of the veterans that are involved with fighting now and what do you see in their eyes and when are they telling you leaving the service . We have some top guys that came out of the military. Brian stand, tim kennedy. You know, all served and some of them still wear the uniform. There are a lot of guys that see that transition and thats become their new purpose. You know, they are no longer in a uniform now. They want to take a shot at being an mma fighter. They are successful because of the discipline, you think, that they get in the military . I think there is a mindset of physical fitness and a discipline that all comes from your military training that translates very well to mixed martial arts. What has your life been like after fighting . What are you doing now . What do you do to keep yourself with that edge . He is dancing with the stars. Yeah. That was certainly a challenge. Mostly focused on acting. I am still at the gym in las vegas. My son is spending a lot of time there. He fights for belle torre as well. I am focused on acting. Getting more jobs. I need to start with you. Not only do you understudy cinderella. Have you several parts to spring into action for on any given night . I. Do. I understudy everybody in the ensemble as well as cinderella and gabrielle who is one. Stepsisters. Thats nine people i understudy and i can hop into any of those roles. I have done almost all of them many, many times. How different is this script compared to what i read as a child growing is up . The core is the same. Its the classic fairy tale. Its been rewriting by Douglas Carter bean, nominated for a tony award for best book. Its norv a modern sense of humor. Its a modern take on this classic fairy tale. It feels classic. It looks like a classic fairy tale. You feel like you have been transported to this random fairy tale kingdom. It really feels like a modern sensibility. We opened last night and the audience, it felt like there was a laugh track. Its really a very, very funny and still incredibly touching show. What have people been telling you after they see it . Its been so we play at lots of different theaters around the country, around this theater has a stage door right next in the marquee, which is great because people can actually see you after the show and say hi and tell you what they thought and people are so receptive. Its gone over really well. The show is on fire for us because its been so vocal. Its always a big hit with dads. And i think its unexpected for them. They go thinking we are just going to enjoy it. I am here for my kids. And then leave having really enjoyed themselves and feeling affected by the story. Thats always an exciting surprise. Thats powerful. Yeah. It is quintessentially inspirational. The point of the story is anythings possible. To have that told in a way that makes fun of that sometimes and i think the tone of the show such that it welcomes the audience into a world that they are already comfortable in. And it doesnt feel like they are being talked down to. And i think because they are having fun along the way, the audience ends up leaving with a stronger message. How important do you think it is that they modernize and wrote the script for todays audiences as far as the connection that it makes with the audience . Especially since cinderella has been around so long, it exists in every single world culture. Its an important story. And every culture has its own version. And the United States has, i dont know, probably 15 to 20 different versions of cinderella and this is one of the greats. Its the rogers and hammerstein music and it was time for a new audience. Lets get personal. You guys are newlyweds. You are. Dating a long time. During that time performing on stage together. Whats it like to have a real life prince in front of you . Its amazing. We have so much fun. This is such a gift that we tour together. Actors normally are taken all over the place. We have never been in the same spot for more than a month maybe before this tour. So its been incredible. And then to also share the stage with each other as co stars is just wild. You never expect to be looking over at your partner and realize, oh my gosh, thats my husband. Did you ever think all of us have been married for 800 years. Sometimes there are days where like, really, you finished the milk . Or you couldnt have taken the clothes out of the drier and folded them. Do you have to shut that door . For us we are staying at an apartment here in San Francisco. Usually we are in Hotels Across the country. There is no you didnt make the bed. Thats right. Right. Room service. Right. Have you guys ever performed in San Francisco before . I have, actually.
