Part is the media that the younger children are seeing now. They have more access to media at an earlier age. I think that parents are more obsessed about their childrens appearance. Part of that is due to the focus on trying to prevent obesity in schools. The messages are counter balancing what we want to see. Which is kidding just letting go and playing with their bodies and having fun with their bodies and living as children. You talk about schools. Im going to transition there. You hear about schools and their cafeterias and how they feed their students the food they offer. Does that play a role into this . There is a push to get better food in schools. My concern is it is not done for all size bodies. We have a weight neutral approach to help. We honor people naturally come in different shapes and sizes. There is an example of mindy. There are people of all shapes and sizes that are very healthy. We can be healthy. Emphasis on trying to change our bodies from what they are intended to be is where we run into problems. We have body positive programs in schools. It is exciting because we are forwarding the movement with her saying the body positive project. The movement has expanded beyond our organization. Which is lovely to see. Now we are getting our curriculum into the hands of professionals and educators so they can start working with kids at younger and younger ages. You started your work with the body positive more than 20 years ago. Then these came around. I can see all the models on celebrities at the beach doing yoga eating three green beans just by looking at my phone. How has social media changed how we feel about ourselves and your mission . One, we have a camera on us at all times. This constant with kids posting pictures of themselves all the time really changed things. They are hyper aware of their image. The other thing the comparison game starts. As you were saying you are looking at these pictures and they make you feel badly. When you hear that critical voice like i want that or wish i could be that person the key is to recognize that you are in the comparison game. Critical voices we can step out of it. We can remember, for me it is really key to remember that my sister died from her complications from hating her body. I always remember when ever i think im supposed to be different i remember im alive. And this is my life. I have a choice in whether i want to play that game of comparing myself to somebody else. How can we start young in letting kids know that it is okay, starting early that it is okay the way you look . What messages can you tell even small children . One thing as parents of young children, it is very hard. The culture is so big. They go out in the world and they are getting messages from their friends and everywhere. The key is to, first of all talk positively about your own bodies. Fathers and mothers. It is important not to trash yourself at all. The other thing is to create an environment where they dont have to you let them eat food. You dont focus on it too much. You give them healthy food and let them make choices. Let them know how amazing and wonderful they are. Key is to create body positive environments in the schools. Thats where a lot of messages come from. They have so much influence. People criticize dictionaries. Our sense is if you are encountering these words in text you should be able to find them in the dictionary. They are entered not because we see them on social media or blogs. We have seen them in published edited text. These are established members of the language. Even the informal ones. I imagine words hip in 1869 that arent used anymore, do those words come out . Words do sometimes come out. Especially from the collegiate dictionary. The words are the words people dont notice anymore. We still need to have a book that is affordable. We are constrained by space consideration. There is an urban dictionary, there are slang words you dont know what they mean you type into the internet and there is an urban dictionary that is not you guys. Could that spur you guys to be a service to people . People want to know what words mean . We see urban dictionary as having a different mission. Ours is to catalog the language. A big problem people arent asking is if you do have enough money to retire or all you need is parttime work what are you going to do with your time . Because we are living longer, ten to 30 years longer than our parents we are finding a new unscripted part of our life we didnt plan for. We didnt have a script for it. All of our lives have been scripted. We went through school and followed the route. If we were in the military we followed the route. Then what . The concern that people are going cold turkey going from fulltime work five days a week to all of a sudden nothing . Yes. Now you are in limbo. Go from ceo to tending your roses. Should i be looking into hobbies. It is a big gap. Imagine if we retired tomorrow. I dont know what i would do to fill my day. You get fulfillment, purpose and you feel like you are part of something larger. You have friendships and social interaction. Tomorrow we dont need you. You dont show up. Then what . I noticed, unfortunately, with a lot of older relatives or friends when they retire, their health takes a hit, too. Not feeling useful will affect their health. Do you see that . Absolutely. When you retire, and when i say retire i mean stopping working. We are trying to redefine retirement so it doesnt mean you stop. We dont want to stop. If you do stop you have a 40 higher chance of falling into clinical depression than when you retire. If you cannot state your purpose of life in your retirement, you have a 56 higher chance of having a stroke. How do i prepare for that . How do i repair for retirement mentally . A plan. Our whole lives have been plans. In the corporate world you went from supervisor to manager to director to Senior Vice President to president. Everything followed a path. We dont have that now. The idea now is to come up for a plan for a balanced retirement that includes work, volunteer, social interaction addressing your health. Do people fall into depression during retirement because of the financial burden . Or because they are not emotionally prepared . I would say not the financial burden. If financial burden, we know how to address that. Keep working. Do some work. It may not be ideal but there is an answer to that. What i see are people engaged in their work. Then all of a sudden supposed to stop work and sleep late, golf and travel. Where is the fulfillment after six months or a year. What is a good plan for a soft landing . Ease out. Ease out of what you are doing. Parttime work . Parttime work. Looking for work that ng, that part of something larger where you are give you can back.
