Into plus, police in san jose want to know where this guy is. Details on the violence crime he is accused of committing. And still yawning after Daylight Saving time . And its your favorite. You just crank that dial up in the car, right . All right. Rolling the windows down. Crank it up. Top story. Bart passengers dealing with another morning of delays and shuttle buss. Engineers trying to figure out what caused a power surge that damaged more than 50 cars. Ktvu fox 2s Christian Crafton has been on this story all morning long. He has word that it could go on a lot longer. Reporter i felt like i had deja vu. Think about what the drivers, the commuters are going through having to take these bus bridges. We are going to give you a look at the inside of one of these bus bridges. This one an ac transit bus taking people between the pittsburg station and the North Concord bus station. The bus actually empty waiting for people coming out. People going in towards the San Francisco area. So at this point in time not a whole lot of people on this bus heading out to pittsburg bay point. You can bet this bus will be full later on. As you said before, the possibility that this knew could last for months. Earlier we spoke with people on the bus bridge earlier as we took the ride from pittsburg bay point to the North Concord station. That ride took about 20 minutes. While some passengers are take the whole thing in stride, others are starting to express frustration, learning that the fix might take a long time. As long as 22 weeks. Its very disheartening to think that we are going to have to deal with this for five and a half months. I am going to have to make other rangments because my commute is averaging about two and a half hours each way. And thats not sustainable with my family. Reporter yeah. So passengers like that lady we spoke with certainly hoping that bart can expedite the process. You see you get off the bus, you head over to the bart station over here, the whole electrical problem affecting about 50 cars on wednesday. Bart now saying that they have to order the parts to repair this problem, this ongoing electrical problem. And you heard it, guys. That fix could as long as five and a half months way. When you spoke to the engineer, he seemed to say it could take 22 weeks, but they could expedite the process. And he seemed somewhat his demeanor was like, yeah, it could take that long, but we are going to do the best possible. What sense do you get on how long it will actually take . Reporter you know, thats the Million Dollar question. I dont have a sense on exactly how long its going to take. Bart saying it could take 22 weeks, but thats on the outside. Right. And its going to take time to install those parts and get those parts in place. My guess is bart will expedite the process as fast as they possibly can. Who knows . Maybe they will single track trains around the area where there is a problem. I get the feeling that barts going to do everything they can to work out a solution and get as many people back on the trains as quickly as possible. You can see that the bus bridge works fairly well, but a lot of the folks saying it adds to their morning commute. It makes it longer for them to come and go. You know, one of the things that we talked about with some of the passengers this morning was the idea that the big issue is when they come home. These passengers getting often the bus bridge right now. When any come home, another big logjam happens. We talked with people who say when they go in San Francisco, their strategy is to hop on a bus going outbound. In other words, going out towards daly city, towards the airport, because they say it makes more sense to go outbound before they catch another train coming back so they can actually get room on the bart trains because they are so crowded because there are so few bart trains out there. A lot of people doing the best they can to work out a situation as best as they can. The bigger picture, i mean, is in the end of the life for the bart system that they built decades ago and that this is kind of the beginning of maybe more to come . Has bart touched on that, that this may be the beginning . More things breaking down . Reporter well, i dont know if you had a chance to read that whoever is in charge of barts twitter feed last night was unbelievably candid and said that bart was its an older system. A lot of the parts of it are at the end of their useful life. So whoever was on that twitter feed last night remarkably candid and said something exactly like that, mike, that a lot of the parts of the system arent meant to handle this many passengers. They say the system wasnt built to handle as many passengers as they are carrieing and the parts are used. 22 weeks is ridiculous. I know you got to order the parts. But it seems like i dont know. Reporter when i heard 22 weeks, we double, triple checked. When you add it up, you are looking at five and a half months. Thats a long time for people to have to wait and accommodate. At the end of summer. Thanks. We will get to the tweets you were just talking about. Bart again very, very candid in response to passengers. Bart was using the hashtag hisisourreality. Honest responses to frustrated tweets. One said bart was built to transport far fewer people and much of our system has reached the end of its useful life. For the next several hours, bart directly responded to dozens of other tweets by acknowledging the problems with the system and explaining the history of those problems. I know historically, sal, whenever there is a problem with bart there is a lingering drop in ridership until the giants win the world series and we have to take bart into the city. Its our only choice. And i have seen the corresponding increase in traffic along highway 4 and on 680. Youre seeing it. People wont put up with it after a certain point and they will get into their cars. Then if this lasts long, the commute is going to be heavier. Thats just all there is to it. I asked one of the spokesmen yesterday about the new fleet they are getting. They spend millions and millions of dollars to get these cars. Is this going to happen on the rail that the same spot . That would be awful. They didnt have an answer. I dont know. Frustrating. Stay with ktvu for continuing coverage of the bart situation. Do you rely on bart . Are you over bart . How could bart make the situation better for you . Are you dissatisfied . Its our twitter question to you today. Are you making do . Do you have any other options . Let us know on twitter. You are you overusing bart because of whats happening here or is it your only option and you have to choose it. Hashtag ktvuthe9. Now to the east bay. Senator ted cruz and governor john kasich. But its looking increasingly difficult for trump to reach that finish line of 1237 delegates. According to uc berkeley dean of the Goldman School of public policy, henry brady. He has been winning 48 of the delegates. He has got to win 55 of the delegates in the future. Thats a push upwards. And Hacker Group Anonymous is declaring an all out war on donald trump. Members reportedly started releasing personal information on the republican frontrunner. Speaking of college, thats when i got the most sleep. Sleeping in. In college, i was how much how many classes did you miss because of sleeping through . A few. If you are yawning still after Daylight Saving time, youre not alone. Joining us dr. Rink. We have so much to talk about when it comes to sleep. Lets focus first on Daylight Saving time and how the children specially, if they are out of whack, so are mom and dad. Exactly, yes. Daylight saving time can be tough on people with young kids. The best thing to do if you are still having trouble getting adjusted is to adjust their sleep, their bedtime a little bit each night. Move it back 15 or 20 minutes each night until you get that can back on that schedule you had before Daylight Saving time. And thats a really good way do it. How much should children be sleeping . I have a three and fiveyearold. Do they need 12 hours of sleep . Infants need 15 hours of sleep a night. Today letters about 12 hours. When you get into the School Age Kids they can get 10 hours and to adults they need to be sleeping about eight hours a night. Thats the recommended time to sleep. Wow. Is there a reason why Young Children have sleep issues . There definitely can be reasons why they have it. If you there are some common sense tips i think that people can try. Really keeping the bedtime routine regular. Making the sleep environment conducive to sleeping. Make sure its dark. If you need black out curtains, get those. A white out machines. Some common sense tips arent working, there could be Something Else going on and it may be a good time to talk to a pediatrician. One of my concerns of using those machines, when you pull the machine away, that would be another issue . It could be a problem. I think that generally you want to get rid of those things slowly and kind of get them off of it. Over a period of time, so you just dont take it way one night. You gradually get rid of those. With my children i have had a bedtime routine since they were born. Good. We have stuck to it. They have never been in our bed. We go into their room. Its worked. If there is a problem, get up from the room and go to the bed. If they need us to sleep next to them, they will fall asleep. Thats the key. Be routine. Be regular with the sleep routine. These things really work for kind of typical sleep problems that kids have. There are a lot of problems such as night terrors, which is extremely common, where some of these tips with regular sleep routines wont get them to sleep through the night. Lets talk about night terrors. You had a twin sister who had night terrors. This is a million times more than a nightmare. Its different than a night ter he. The child wont recognize you. They last up to half an hour. They can occur nightly. They are terrible. If you have ever seen one, you will never forget it. They have them why . We dont really know why they have them. They are different than nightmares. In the past, the parents had to wait for them to go away. It could take years. My sister had this problem. My niece and nephew. We invented a product to help kids sleep through the night. Tell us about it. This is the sleep guardian. Its a pod parents place under their mattress and it connects with their smartphone. It learns the patterns that lead to a childs night terrors and vibrates once a night get the child out of the sleep pattern to get them out of the night terror. Its proven to work. Can you ask you about adults now . I mentioned earlier i get, you know, probably five hours of sleep is good. Yep. And you are shaking your head, doctor. But five hours is not enough . A little less. I feel like i dont want to miss some moments of life, whether its at 10 30 at night or 5 in the morning. Am i doing it the wrong way . Thats not an easy answer. Its a hotly debated area. You are getting less than the recommended amount of sleep. For adults 8 hours. But a lot of people say if you feel okay with the amount of sleep you are getting, it may be okay for you. It have vary from person to person. If you feel tired, you need my body says go for it. You maybe be okay. Doctor real quick, how important is it to get sleep studies for people who are not sleeping well . The kind where you go to a clinic and they hook you up . Right. Overnight sleep studies. Yeah. You can try some common sense tips that we talked about, making the bedtime routine regular, making the sleep environment nice for sleeping, conducive for sleeping. If these arent working, thats the time to seek professional help and maybe you get a sleep study to figure out whats going on. How many hours do you sleep a night . Seven to eight hours. And he has a little baby girl. I do. A 17monthold daughter. All right. Dr. Andy rink, thank you for joining us. Coming up, a war of words between San Franciscos police union and the District Attorney. The radio attack ad accusing him of giving criminals a get out of jail free card. The assistant track coach at a high school is charged with having sex with two students. Its not the first time the School District had to respond to these allegations this year alone. Brian flores has more details. Reporter this is the second case in the past two months where an adult associated a high school within this district has had an inappropriate relationship with a student n a letter sent out by the superintendent, he says that he is very disappointed by these allegations. Now, investigators say 21yearold enoch garcia was booked into the county jail on tuesday. A School District employee contacted authorities on monday to report an alleged inappropriate relationship that garcia allegedly had with a 14yearold girl and a 17yearold girl. Both students at Mount Pleasant high. Remains unclear how long the relationships or encounters lasted. Now, according to the east side unified high School District, garcia was a part Time Employee who was a off campus or walk on coach at the friars the past two years. A student we spoke to says he was a Long Distance coach for the schools track team. He has been fired as a result of these allegations. The district says that garcia did pass all background checks and had no previous incidents. Gar yeahs garcias bail is set at 200,000. He was a good coach. He always used to tell his group that do things great, you know. He never he couldnt see it in him. But i am surprised that he did it. It was reported to a teacher. The teacher immediately came into the principal, reported it, and then we took action immediately. Again this person is not a teacher. Not a classified employee, but an assistant track coach. Reporter now, this is the second incident for the district. In early february, the acting vice principal of James Lick High School was arrested. 35yearold Jose Gonzalez was booked for a charge of annoying or molesting a child under 18 years old. That happened over last summer. We also understand that sjpd will be speaking with staff at Mount Pleasant high of the warning signs of seeing an inappropriate relationship. As for garcia, we also understand that along with being an assistant track coach, he was also a student at Mount PleasantHigh School Graduating in the class of 2012. In san jose, brian flores, ktvu fox 2 news. Airbnb hosts need to pay taxes on furniture and Household Items used by guest toss stay in their homes. Those items will be subject to a tax of slightly over 1 . Airbnb says middleclass families shouldnt have to inventory and pay taxes on every picture frame, towel and spoon in their home. Speaking of home prices and a shortage of homes on the market made last one slow for bay area home cease. Last month was the second slowest february in eight years. The only area that showed an increase in home buying activity was east Contra Costa County where home prices are lower. The high cost of bay area housing may be one of the factors pushing San Francisco high techers to tech workers to seattle. Here is the cost of living comparison. One bedroom apartment in seattle averages 1,660 a month. In San Francisco, 3,620 a month. There is a big difference there. All right. Now to our crime files. And the San FranciscoPolice Officers association is now running radio ads accusing the d. A. George gascon of going easy on criminals. As ktvu Crime Reporter henry lee reports, the officers can blame gascon for an increase in crime. Since George Gascon became District Attorney violence crime in the city has risen 25 . Reporter thats martin hallow ran, president of the San Francisco police union in a radio ad that has been playing all week. Gascon, who is the coauthor of the prop 47 law, is passing out get out of jail free cards. If you leave your purse in your car and it ends up in the hands of a criminal, under gascons law its a slap on the wrist with a ticket issued. Reporter in most most places cops are in lock step with the d. A. Here in San Francisco, her at loggerheads. Its no secret there is no love lost between the sf p. D. And d. A. George gascon, himself a former cop. Lady he has been on lately he has been on a campaign for police reform. Also prop 47. Police have long blamed prop 47 for the increase in crimes like auto burglaries. Last year there were nearly 26,000, quadruple the number since 2012. Its difficult to catch these individuals in the act, and then of course, you know, once we catch the individuals in the act, then there is the issue of the prosecution. The case going to the District Attorneys office and seeing, you know, especially under prop 47, whether or not they are going to prosecute the person. Reporter a spokesman for gascon tells us the union doesnt know what its talking about. The fact of the matter this is an organization that has zero credibility. They have demonstrated they are willing to say anything in order to evade scrutiny and hoodwink the public and distract people from the problems that the department is having. Reporter and as far as prop 47 . Throwing stones. You know, asserting that prop 47 a statewide initiative is responsible for that when our arrest rate, as poor as it is, is not making this problem go away. Making an arrest in auto burglary cases is going to make the problem go away. Reporter the d. A. Said they took action on 80 of the cases. This is becoming a political football. Its not about making sure that people are safe or that your car is not getting broken into. This is about pointing fingers. I think its a political thing. It has to do with politics. Reporter he says the criminal Justice System didnt go easy on him. I did 32 months for a petty theft. Stole something less than 100 and i ended up doing 32 months for that. Joining us is henry lee. This dispute wean the d. A. And the police union, is it the worst its been in a while . Because i dont remember them fighting so much in the past. Yeah, there has been clashes between them. But this is pretty serious. I mean, they have had attack ads on the radio. They have accused the d. A. Of disparaging minorities at dinner five years ago. The d. A. Says if you were to arrest more car burglars and car thieves, we are the guys doing the prosecutions. You got to step it up, which they say they have, and bring us the cases. Throwing out words like zero credibility, political football. We heard that in the piece there. Is there a deeper story here about the sfpoa maybe concerned about gascons political future and whether or not he is going to run to be the mayor of that city and thats something they dont want to see . As you know, George Gascon was an outside wherry was tapped to become the San Francisco police chief. A lot of rank and file havent forgiven him for that. He is rooting out corruption within the ranks and the chief has brisled about that. The union knows that there is a lot of discontent, that they think mr. Gascon is using the d. A. Platform as a stepping stone possibly for another office. I have asked his spokes people, you know, does he have other plans . They say no, he is doing his job. He is not out there to placate people. Otherwise, why would you be angering cops . You have covered these two sides day in and day out at ktvu. The general public in San Francisco, do you think they are aware of whats going on . Does it affect how they feel about their police force or top prosecutor . I think a lot of people have been hit by car burglaries. Even our own newsman. Everyone in San Francisco has been touched by this in one way or another. So i think on the street, the average person is saying, you know what . I called the cops. No one came or no one found my stuff. People might not report it honestly. I know so many people who go, what are the police going do . Well, henry lee, gnaw thank you for following this story. The brackets, you know how you fill out brackets . Right. I think its better to guess. You were saying you do better when you guess . Speaking of dreams, i mean, is live theater in general your dream growing up . Absolutely. Yeah. I started doing shows when i was like 10. I was the super shy kid. Did a fifth grade musical and completely came out of my shell. And from then on out i just i absolutely love being on stage and i love telling stories. Because why . What is it about being on stage . Oh, gosh. I think there is something so alive about it that its happening in real time, that you are working on a team almost. Right. I love that kind of aspect of putting something together with other people. And then also having the audience there. Especially if its a fun show. You know, i have a tenyearold niece who discovered that she loves being on stage. Uhhuh. And she was very excited when i told her you were going be here. She is probably watching. Any words of advice for young actors . They start young, right, and they continue . Of course. What is her name . Meadow. Hi, meadow. Whats up . Yeah, i think its important to kind of follow your joy. And especially when you are a kid getting into it. I think its important to just have a lot of fun with it and be open to learning. Be open to being inspired by performers that you love and i think that there is a plan for everyone, you know. Everybodys journey is different. And so i think if you can just really enjoy it. Do your best work and bring yourself as much as possible to the role, whatever youre playing. Thats what i did when i was a sailor in South Pacific. You were a sailor in South Pacific . Yes. Give us a line. I was just a sailor. I just sat in the background and walked on the stage. Wow you gave it your best. Here is something i wonder. Do people recognize you when you are around in San Francisco . Sometimes. Sometimes i will be walking by the theater going to get ready and put my makeup on and the lottery is happening outside. We have a lottery that happens two and a half hours before the show. So my picture is on the wall. So sometimes you get people saying, hey whats your favorite, real quick and we have to run, but whats your favorite part of the show . The entrance when you come in . Thats one of my favorite parts. Its changing every night. Right now i am in love with the finale. I love it so much. Gives me chills being up there doing it. Of course, popular. I have so much fun doing that as well.
