Plus, sacramentos museum is celebrating five decades of oscar de la renta. We will take you live inside to give you a sneak peek at the glamourous new exhibit. And the annual st. Baldricks telethon is this weekend. From cloverdale and cupertino, happy thursday. Rain or shine, the day must go on. I live taking the live picture. A gamble, trying to see if we catch a bird taking off on this thursday morning. Right now negative ghost rider. It looks like the pattern is full. We are not getting any 737s. Getting word that we have a bird on its way in. On the lefthand side right there. There you go. Alex savidge with the call right there in for sal castaneda. Isnt it fascinating to watch planes take off and land . It never gets old. It is. Is it a guy thing . I have never done that ever in my life. I was listening to the song you picked by the stones. Nice pick. Me, too. A little bit of everything. Good morning to, you gasia. Welcome to the 9, everyone. Want to get to steve paulson. We are getting hard in the north bay. Some weather. Steve . Yes. Are we getting hit hard . Mike, did you have any rain coming in or not . I did not across the Richmond San Rafael bridge. It was a nice ride in. Its just moving in now. Yeah, most of marin county. Lets take a look. It is torrential rain for some here, especially napa county. So the flash mine, i cant go quick enough to update this. It will move slowly here. South bay may have to wait a while here. There is some incredibly heavy rain. Update on Russian River. I have not updated healdsburg. Guerneville 15. 6. Its expected to reach 34. 7. Thats moderate because flood stage is 32. So we are going to keep an eye on. This its going quick, really quick. I know austin creek is raging. Kelsey creek in lake county is also raising. There is the line thats moving ever so slowly. This is a north bay event so far big time. Now marin county. Looks like its moving in mill valley, san rafael, marin wood probably getting slammed right now. Pretty close to kent field. Not to Tiburon Sausalito yet. There is novato back over towards much of now lakeville highway, 121, 116. Pouring petaluma. It has now moved into napa. Finally they are inching into napa. And then glen ellyn, caliente and sonoma, that is moving slowly south. Napa is in there. Maybe not southern napa. You can see that is torrential rain. St. Helena, glen ellyn to windsor. Thats a cause for concern there. Heavy rain also into mendocino county, lake county. The heaviest is sonoma county, marin county and napa county. Some of the rainfall will be off the charts. There is going to be 4 to 5 inch amounts easily in the next 24 hours. Suffice to say, a long way to go. That line moves into southern marin and gets into parts of the east bay and San Francisco pretty soon. Flash flooding certainly possible. We will have more later. Its on its way. Tomorrow everybody will be in on it. Thank you. And it was nice seeing that radar because we are getting word right now that part of the roof at a kmart has collapsed in the city of santa rosa. We heard steve talking about the heavy rain in sonoma county, marin county. Allie rasmus has been reporting all morning from marin. She is headed to that kmart right now and we will look to get a live report from her as soon as she arrives. Once it begins, it should take four to five days to complete. Tonight the republican president ial candidates will debate in the important state of florida ahead of tuesdays primary there. Just last night we watched the Democratic Candidates take the stage in miami for a pretty fiesty exchange. Ross polumbo the only bay area political reporter there. He joins us live from miami. Ross, good morning to you. It was an interesting debate last night. Clinton and sanders, they sparred over many issues, but for me maybe one of the big moments was when clinton was asked about whether she would drop out of the race if she was indicted over the email server issue. Refused to answer the question. How did that play in the room . Reporter well, good morning, from sunny miami. A little windy out here this morning. But candidate Bernie Sanders hoping that the winds of change are in the air. You know, he was flying high last night after a big win in michigan. Last night here was really about the debate and really about the issue surrounding immigration policies. In south florida, two out of three voters here are hispanic. The candidates spent most of the final sparring over that primary issue. The moderators got both candidates for the first time to pledge to never deport children or adults unless they have criminal backgrounds. Aside from that, clinton and sandoval went after each other on just about every other nuance surrounding immigration. And i said, welcome those children into this country. Secretary clinton said, send them back. He voted in the house with a hard line republicans for indefinite detention for undocumented immigrants. When you contrast it with the food fight insult fest that happened in detroit last thursday with the republicans where you got, you know, only an understanding of one of the candidates manhood, another candidates hand size, and spray tan, we are the only party that have candidates that take the American People seriously. Reporter as for the republicans, they square up here in miami tonight. The latest polling says donald trump has a 23 point lead over marco rubio. This is the last gop debate before the primary here on tuesday. And if rubio doesnt win his home state, many believe he simply will drop out. Rubio though this morning is staying he believes he is going to win here in florida. Of course, we will have to see that debate tonight could change everything. Guys, as we have seen many times in the past, rubio, is best when his back is against the wall. Alex, back to your question, as to how Hillary Clinton was received in the democratic debate last night, i dont think anything either candidate had to say last night was much of a game changer. They were going at it much more than usual. We saw that trend start in flint. They went after each other last night several times primarily over immigration. But it was very civil and unlike the gop debates have been in the past and what we expect here in miami tonight. I notice after super tuesday and some of her speeches out there across the country, Hillary Clinton wasnt sailing the two words Bernie Sanders. Now, last night she almost attacked him on every response that he had. To me that gives the sense that she knows this is not in the bag yet in regards to getting to the general election, that she needs to beat Bernie Sanders before she can take whoever the republican candidate is . Reporter thats exactly right, mike. You know, michigan was a big upset. The biggest upset that we have seen on the democratic side. Certainly during the election season so far. Remember, Hillary Clinton was 27 points, nearly 30 points ahead in michigan and a poll taken just the day before the primary, and then the stunning upset where she loses. It brings into question whether the polling is really accurate and whether bernie really is the come from behind kid. Thats what he is calling himself. It looks like in several states thats exactly what he is. That is worrying to Hillary Clinton because its hard to know where she stands, what she needs too do. So her strategy last night, as you say correctly, was to more directly go after him. Big night for the democrats last night. Big night for the republicans tonight. Ross polumbo live from miami this morning. Thank you very much. All eyes on florida. The Republican Democratic debates have focused on a wide range of issues. Economy, immigration, foreign affairs. What is the most important issue for you . Perhaps a make or break issue. Thats our twitter question this morning. When you respond, use the hashtag ktvuthe9. We will be reading your responses around 9 30. New pictures of the ace Train Derailment in niles canyon. The Alameda CountyFire Department posted photos. An up close look at the damage from both the outside of the cars as well as the frantic rescue of passengers inside. Incredible photos. Ktvu reporter amber lee talked to some of the first firefighters and sheriffs deputies who got to the scene on monday night. They also showed her cell phone photos of those First Responders looking for victims inside that car that had ended up on its side in the cold waters of the Alameda Creek after it derailed. And now because the train car was on its side, rescuers were literally walking on the walls of that train car. It was very slippery because now we are walking on the walls instead of the floor. So making our way down the train, we were slipping and sliding. There is about 100 people standing outside the train on the edge. There were several people on the ground crying. Bleeding. First responders say they were just doing their job. They are heaping praise on the passengers, the train conductor and the engineer. Coming up, improving the relationship with the community. August 1992, i mean, take us back. I mean, here you are facing leukemia . I mean, how did that experience battling the disease, going through it, coming out of it affect your life as we see it today . Well, i think thats a difficult question. But i think it affected pretty much every area of my life. One in particular that you would like to share or could share with us . Well, eventually it developed into the reason that im in medicine now. Youre in residency right now in Childrens Hospital in oakland . Yes. What motivated you to want to get into medicine and become a doctor . My experiences with cancer treatments and the idea that potentially using my experience with the illness to help other children get through it emotionally. Do you tell your young patients, i went through something similar to what you are dealing with . If the situation presents itself, i have, yeah. Not all the time, but if especially with the children that are first being diagnosed or their parents, thats who i tend to share that with. How do you feel that helps them . What is the response that you see . Well, when i actually met with some survivors when i was going through cancer treatments and it really gave me some hope to see the other side of the illness, that there is life after treatments. And so i think that that has also helped some of the families that i have talked to about it, to see that im a pretty regular guy now. Doing okay for himself . Is there something that the doctors and nurses who helped you during the treatment process that you learned from them that you apply today as a doctor . I think just to have fun still, you know. A lot of them are some of the best, most kindest, caring, giving individuals that i ever have met, and were definitely part of the reason i wanted to get back into the field as a care provider and, you know, just seeing the enthusiasm they bring to work every day still is very inspiring. And you are raising money for cancer research. You are going to be shaving your head this coming saturday for the st. Baldricks shavea thon. How are you feeling about that . Apprehensive . Yeah, a little bit. Its been about 20 years since i have been bald. How did you feel when it wasnt your chase, when one being treated for leukemia . I thought about that lately since commit committing to do the fundraiser. Its hard for anyone to lose hair, but especially for a kid because its so much a part of your identity. I think that is really how it affected me, you know. Great story. You have a wonderful story. And i think a lot of us at home here in the desk, cancer has affected our lives in a way. In the bay area we are seeing some of the impact of the wet weather we have been having here. A big tree fell this morning and cut off many people in one east bay neighborhood. Ktvu fox 2 reporter janine de la vega is in sunol with the efforts to remove that tree. Reporter we are here in the mountains of sunol on kill care road. This is just about four miles up from niles canyon and mission boulevard. Youre looking at this huge tree that fell over and it is completely blocking the road. Now, on the other side of this tree you can see residents are standing behind that yellow caution tape because they are trapped. We are told that there is about 30 homes up there, and this is the only access road that those people can come and use. So they have their cars parked up there. They wish it could get out. But this tree fell at 3 30 this morning and now an arborist is out here and crews are chopping it up, trying to haul it out of the way to help these people out. They are telling us in about two hours that that should happen. But sort of a situation here living in the mountains they might have expected. Not sure when the last time this has happened because we havent been able to speak to the people because they are trapped and they are trying to keep them away for safety reasons. You know where janine is, thats the same spot we had a mudslide flow and derail that commuter train the other night. Lets go to the north bay. We have been talking about intense rain up there. Allie rasmus in front of a kmart store. Part of the store came down behind you . Reporter you can see part of the roof in this area right behind us did collapse. I just spoke with the santa rosa Fire Department. The assistant fire marshal told me that the building inspector was out here this morning. This happened about 7 45. No one was injured. Fire crews came out here. Building inspector completed his work. They concluded it was dry rot in the roof and the heavy rain we have had all morning that brought this portion of the roof down. The store is open. Its just the Electronics Section and the garden area of the store that remains closed. We have seen a couple of people come by asking, you know, what happened. Again, partial roof collapse because of dry rot and the heavy rain. No one was hurt. This happened at 7 45. So before the store opened. You can expect more heavy rain from now until sunday in the north bay. There is a Flash Flood Watch in effect. We have some video to show you of the drive over here on highway 101 this morning. This is near pen grove. 101 north. Windshield wipers full speed. It got heavier the farther north we went. In guerneville they are concerned about the water levels of the Russian River. They are keeping an eye on what happens with the steady rain we are expecting. I checked with the Russian RiverFire Protection district earlier this morning and he said right now the water levels are about 14 to 16 feet, which is well below the flood stage. But despite the heavy rainfall, they are not worried about it yet. They are concerned about what happens on saturday because thats when the forecast calls for those water levels at the Russian River to reach 32 feet, which is the flood stage. When i spoke with captain ryan lance with the Russian RiverFire Protection district he said that they are talking about bringing in extra staff this weekend in case there are problems with flooding out there. I am looking at the ktvu weather app and i see yellows and oranges in santa rosa. Has it been tapering off or is it coming down harder right now . What have you noticed . Reporter i would say an hour ago it was coming down a little harder than this. Is seems a little light. Its been steady and consistent. Its not like a Tropical Storm where its just a torrential downpour. Just this relentless rain that has been happening all morning. It seems a little lighter right now. Supposed to be four days of this. We will see. Thank you very much. People who hog seats on bart could soon face pretty stiff fines. Today barts board of directors will consider a plan that would lead to fines for people who take up more than one seat. And here is how it would work. Has gers would be fined 100 for the first time they take up too much room. 200 for the second. 500 for anything more than two times. Okay. Meantime, bart taking steps to keep its stations cleaner. According to the San Francisco chronicle, the agency is putting up no trespassing gates at the four downtown San Francisco stations. They put them up overnight to prevent people from using them as a bathroom. And bart is spending a reported 1 million a year to hire a crew of workers to clean those four stations. The paper says that bart staffers will brief the board of directors on its cleaning efforts at a meeting tomorrow. Nursing moms will have an easier time traveling through the airport. They have pods that are meant to give moms a free dedicated place to breastfeed or pump in a private, comfortable and clean environment. Thats very important. I think this is great. Three out of four babies starts off being breast fed and many, many of those babies travel with mom. There are two lactation sweets at the Oakland Airport . Tara moriarty joining us from the hall of justice. We spoke it allie rasmus in santa rosa talking about the rain, the damage shes seen. Any concern in the city there about the new storms coming in, whether its flooding or trees going ounce in gold gate park . Reporter you know, the last time we had a little bit of the wind, a couple days ago. It blew over all these trees. You know, the winds have an impact and hit the trees that are saturated. It hasnt started raining yet in San Francisco. 17th and full son is a place to keep our eyes on. A lot of the water comes down the hill and gets. The sewers and backs up. The last time we had the storm Public Utilities crews went our, surveyed the sewers, tried to see how the water was flowing in and they decided to put up a 400foot long interlocking plastic barrier to see if that could stave off the floodwaters. These barriers are part Anderson Varejao 165,000 pilot project. We have spoken to business owners. They say they are so over the flooding. They have made improvements to their properties to try to help ease the situation during the storm. Right now they are just sort of crossing their fingers that these barriers work out because they are sort of annoyed by them as well. They say if there is an emergency, these barriers are going to block access to homes and stores since they are difficult to move. So again it hasnt started raining in the city, but we expect that to happen a little bit later. Thats the reason for the hair this morning, guys, because it just wouldnt stay straight. All right. Dont worry. It looks great. We will check in with you later. Yesterday morning we checked in with mark ibanez, lounging on a chair, readdy a trashing magazine. Working at spring training. The enquirer. Sorry. Mark, i am with you, man. Its a newspaper. [ laughter ] reporter hey, i agree. I get a lot of factual information out of the enquirer. You know, today im trying to look a little more professional. But just to give you an idea, spring training so laid back. I mean, we are literally on the field and i know you guys had flood stuff you had to talk about. I am not going to rub in the weather here. The as were going through the morning drills. Ron washington putting he is leaning on the bat there. I hope you can get a shot of him. He is a guy who is really helping to turn this organization around. We promised you equal time for the as. And Ron Washington gets out before it is light out in the morning, basically, and puts his guys through drills to help them. The as were one of the worst fielding if not the worst Fielding Team in the majors, and this guy is considered the guru of infield work and helping guys improve and we were out there. I admit i was not out there. But our producer and camera men were out bright and early this morning about 5 30, quarter to 6, as Ron Washington put in the time to help the as improve off their 94 losses last creek last year. Have a look and a listen as he goes through the drills with the as youngsters. Ready . Right at you. Outside. In all of this, how would all of this simulate last hop. Ball put in play. Last hop. All you got is hands. You dont got legs or nothing. Go outside. Now we go into the things he have to do around second base. You aint seen a ball touch the ground yet. Backhand. Then a pretty good baseball player and a very good student of the game of baseball and all of that comes into play. But thats the difference right there. I see cause. I dont see symptoms. A guy dropped his elbow and you have somebody who say he dropped his elbow. Something caused him to drop his elbow. Can you tell him what caused that. I fix cause. Once again, as anything you do in life, you only as good as the people that are training. He is the master at what he does. In fact, eric chavez, third baseman for the as years ago, won the gold glove award and i gave it to Ron Washington in appreciation of the worker has done. A special buzz in the ballpark today because they are taking on the dodgers. Enemy territory today. As and the dodgers here in place a, arizona. Kind of a beautiful afternoon. And the as dined of milling about, getting ready for batting practice right now. Like i say, its so cool at this time of year. The pressure hasnt mounted yet. They let guys like me on the field and nobodys asked me for a pass yet. For a baseball fan, shangrila. Relief efforts quick, i want your opinion on something. There was an article this morning about bob melvin working with players on a mitts. So a guy gets in the box. He is ready to hit. Some defenses, they move their players and put the shift on them. He is having those players work on bunting when the shift is on. Do you think that will you will see more of that this season about when players are going to be forced to bunt if they get shifted . Yeah, i think so, its been a trend to really move over. We are getting a little inside baseball here. But when all those guys move over to one side, it leaves a completely empty side of the feel to bunt. Fans wonder, why dont guys take advantage of that. Bob melvin is cognizant of that. They are basically giving you a freebase, you know, to take a look at it. We are right by juan of the as. This gives you a little idea how close we are. You are getting ready to work out . Yes. Okay. Your name . Bruce maxwell. I hope you make the team, all right . Whether can you do that, you know, at a major league ballpark. Its a lot of fun, guys. I am going to google it right now. All right. Mark, have a great day. Reporter yeah. All right. See ya, guys. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, a comedic spin on Classical Music. Violinist and pianists are changing so many peoples ideas about Classical Music. They are in a 20city u. S. Tour. They are leasing the first cd. Sunday they make their debut performance at San Francisco symphony. This morning they join us on the 9. Welcome, gentlemen. Thanks for joining us. Looks like fun out there. That is not what we expect when we go to the symphony. It is not, yes. No, no. We love mixing comedy and crazy things and different styles of music with the classical. You know, because the classical is deceptive. We are just classically trained. We play all kinds of music. There are so many great pieces of music that are rock music or heavy metal music like you just heard and rap and we mix it together. Disco and it your sense when you went to see a classical performance with all due respect to the audience, you thought they were a little stiff and you wanted them to move around a little bit . What was your take of the audience . Not just stiff, but dying or sleeping. Oh, wow. Okay. Were not really . You go to a performance are you sleeping . When you go to a performance sometimes the atmosphere is like a funeral. And we thought why . The music is fun. Classical music is fun. It can be crazy. Its just in the presentation. Its the whole ceremony. Its so stuffy. Its alienating. The golf classic. Thats right. How did you two meet . How did you get together . What inspired this kind of performance were seeing. I think we were 12. So we were a lot shorter. My voice had just broken. Hello. [ laughter ] i had a very high pitched voice. I still kind of do. You do. And it helps out . I met at the age of 12 at school. How that is interaction when you met each other . A friendship right away . It was a hate at first sight literally. We tried to beat each other up. Well, hold on a second. If you are going to be on tv well, i was its news here. I was stronger than you. But then he offered me fish and chips, which is the local delicacy. Right. And the key to your heart, apparently . Absolutely. Then he stopped hitting and we became friends. So you guys got together and started creating from the age of 12. At my age of 12, i was, you know, i carried my shame across the school campus. I played violin starting from 3rd grade through high school. I was called an orchestra nerd. I mean, i cowered. The band kids were cool. I hope children to see this with the part of 40 million views on youtube you have, is it Classical Music . You dont have to be ashamed to play it. You dont have to hide like i did. And you dont need know anything about Classical Music to come to the show. They dont need to know anything about anything actually. A lot of times the Classical Music you feel like, oh, should i have read my instructions . When do i gasia brings up something about youtube. You guys put a couple clips out there expecting what you have today . Well, you never what did you want out of that . You never expect anything. Somebody advised us put a couple of youtube clips up and we had 40 million clips. Actually, we were famous before we were famous. That was a really weird phenomenon. Everybody knew them. They must be playing everywhere. But we werent. Now not everybody is confused confused. Am do you feel there was more pressure . Noi what . The pressure is always on. But we tried to diffuse it through humor. You know, when we got the shows, like this sunday, you know, its so much fun that usually when the audience starts laughing, you know, the pressure is gone. Any resentment from a classical performers . The opposite. People like joshua bell, emmanuel acts, they join us on stage. We have other musicians like billy joel and actors like John Malkovich who joined us on stage. Orchestras like the phil and chicago symphony wouldnt play with us if they didnt realize we are real musicians. We dont make fun of music. The cat gets more hits on youtube. They love cats on youtube. Right. We should put a cat in our next video. I dont know. I didnt think of that. Do you think about doing another Youtube Video . Are you done with youtube . Yes, actually, we are. We just recorded a cd which is coming out soon called you just have to laugh. And we are planning on making some music videos. All right. Congratulations. Fantastic story. And a wonderful show. These to performing their show and now mozart sunday the 13th at daveties symphony hall. We have posted more information at ktvu.
