Thats the mexican government. Thank god he said he was a politics because air stottcal defined the human as aloni park. That i am a pawn . Maybe. I leave that up to your judgment. The gop candidates have been campaigning heavily across the state this week as we have been showing you. Polls show donald trump with a strong lead in South Carolina with ted cruz and marco rubio vying for second place. Behind them jeb bush, ben cars and john kasich, and there is speculation at least one of those three could drop out of the race if they dont have a good showing in South Carolina. Meanwhile, democratic president ial candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are neckandneck in nevada. At one point clinton was ahead of sanders in the poll, but sanders antiwall street message is gaining momentum in nevada. New this morning the author of to kill a mockingbird has died. Harper lee died at her home in monroeville, alabama. She was 89 years old. The cause of the death hasnt been released, but we know he she suffered a stroke in 2007. It became a bestseller after to kill a mockingbird was released in 1960. An oscarwinning film followed. Maybe it was to kill a mockingbird for you or is there another book that really resonated with you growing up and sort of stays with you still . Let us know on twitter. Make sure to use the hashtag tvuthe9. For me i got to go with on the road. The character of dean moriarty. That carefree attitude. The sense of adventure. I have to think about it. A live look at the dow jones, stocks are mixed right now. The dow is down 50 points and so is the s p. Nasdaq is ever so slightly on the plus site baning onethird of 1 . Spring training underway in scottsdale arizona for the San Francisco giants. Joe fonzi is joining us live right now. Joe, i understand that youre just learning former and longtime giant Jim Davenport has passed away . Reporter yeah, thats right, mike. Its a little bit of a mixed bag of news here today. No question about the fact that when you are around a Baseball Team for a long period of taige, it becomes an extended family. There was nobody more of an extended part of the giants family than Jim Davenport. He came here from alabama. Put down roots. Raised his family in the bay area. He was one of the original members of the giants in 1958. He was a gold glove winner, an allstar. He later became a manager of the giants in 1985. Another member of the family, felipe allow was a teammate of Jim Davenports. He talked about his longtime friend and teammate. He was maybe the best friend that the latinos and blacks had on the team. It was a tremendous group of players. The guys were worried how we were doing. He knew it would be all right. Reporter he was a guy from the south where the south was still segregated . Yeah. I could not believe from alabama. But he was like one of us. I repeat, you know, there was not a trace of racism. The giants was a bunch of good guys. Reporter Jim Davenport will be missed. He died last night at the age of 82. This is pitchers and catchers day two for the giants. If you see behind me over here, they are on the field going through their workouts for the second time here this spring. Things got started yesterday. As many times as weve seen this, it is kind of an exciting thing when you see the guys take the field out there for the first time. Weve seen these drills. Weve seen them plenty of times. But the giants have lots of reasons to be optimistic about whats going on with this team this year. Bruce bochy recovering from shoulder surgery he had earlier this week. He has an accomplished staff of five starters as you could except for him to have at this time with the new acquisitions of Jeff Samardzija and johnny cueva. We talked about the extended family. Willie mays made an appearance in the clubhouse yesterday. Giants new Center Fielder denard span got to know willie and talked about being in the presence of one of the alltime greats. I never got a chance to watch him play. His name, you know, is always, you know, one of the names that when you talk about the best ever to play the game, his name is there. So i have seen highlights. I have seen his stats. So, you know, he is one of those immortal type players that will always be remembered. Youre going to be playing center field for the giants . How about that . How about that . Reporter so today no better example than today of what an extended family, kind of a Baseball Team is. The giants came from new york in 1958. Willie mays, Jim Davenport, felipe alou part of the team. Felipe, i am sure the giants will feel the loss for a time and will be mourning the loss of him. And then life in baseball goes on as a new group of young guys who respect the tradition and the things that those guys brought to the game go on in day two of pitchers and catchers in scottsdale. So just kind of a sampling what its like in the extended giants family that has been with the entire bay area since 58 and new york in the earlyist days of basketball. All right. Joe fonzi, thank you. Coming up here on mornings mornings on 2 the 9, we might be warming up for baseball, but tonight the warriors head back to the court at 9 30. We talk to a man about his ten seasons about the team. And coming up, miss chinatown 2016 u. S. A. In studio next. Ktvu fox 2s alex savidge is live with a preview. Year of the monkey. Reporter good morning, guys. We are counting down to the Chinese New Year parade. It is tomorrow night. Tell you what. Inside this warehouse here in San Francisco along pier 54 there is a lot of lastminute work happening here. That is because we have the team that is putting together many of the floats, including the master float builder. I want to get your title correct. Stephanie mufson. You are in charge of the operations. What do you have to get done before tomorrow to make sure the floats are ready . Get them out of the warehouse, which is going to take a few hours. Once theyre out we will do lastminute, making sure the lighting works, the generators are on, the rails are up. Reporter hundreds of pounds of glitter carefully crafted floats that you have put together here over the last few months. What kind of a challenge is it this to get this ready for the parade . Its a challenge. We work months at a time without a day off. Here early mornings, late nights. Reporter making sure every piece of glitter is where it should be. Lets show you some of the team over here. They are doing some of the finishing touches. This has got to be one of my favorites, you guys. This is, as stephanie was telling me, one of the highlights of the parade tomorrow night. That is a waterfall, but it is also a volcano. Or a waterfall coming down a volcano. Either way, mind blowing, right . Yeah. Its going to be adorable and beautiful really. At night the lights are going to sparkable. Reporter what are some of the other highlights for people watching the parade . Tens of thousands of people who will be packing streets of downtown San Francisco. Sure. Southwest is going to be amazing. Its the southwest Chinese New Year parade. We like to make them something really special. This year we have a rotating ferris wheel with the characters on there, and then, you know, explosion of color and happiness and Chinese New Year celebration. Cafe pacific, which is over there, is also going to be really fun. Its a different style than we usually work with. Its modern and kind of sleek. So that one should be an exciting one to see. Reporter you will be down there to enjoy your work. Do you sit on the parade route . Is. That would be so nice. Im running around make insuring everything is okay. Reporter i imagined you on the parade route keeping an eye on the floats. I will relax if a week. Reporter good. Tons of hard work that goes into it, you guys. The Chinese New Year parade tomorrow night. Gets underway at 6 00. Our coverage, if you cant make it down in person, which we hope you do, watch it on tv of course on ktvu starting at 5 00 is when our coverage starts. Absolutely. Reporter gonna be a blast. In person is so special. Tahoe, alex. We do bring that parade live to you every year. As we to, ktvu fox 2 tomorrow night, our coverage starts with our 5 00 news which leads in the coverage that starts at 7. One of the most looked for participants in the parade is miss chinatown u. S. A. Young women from across the country have come to San Francisco to compete in the annual miss chinatown u. S. A. Pageant, last saturday the 2016 winner was crowned. The miss chinatown u. S. A. 2016 is contest number 4, Stephanie Wong Stephanie Wong of millbrae won the title after defeating 12 other contestants. Stephanie joins us live in studio this morning. How exciting for you. I know this is a huge honor in the Chinese Culture for you to be doing this and representing essentially chinatown. Yeah. Absolutely. Its one of the most exciting moments of my lives. Its one of my first pagents the. Idahoes it because of the cultural background and i chose it because of the cultural background and connection. I have met amazing girls through the experience and i am really glad i did it. Does it blow your mind that you are the one were all looking for tomorrow in the parade for the Chinese New Year. You performed in that parade as a little girl, a dancer with the flying angels, and now to be, you know, the shining diamond at the top of the crown, talk to me about that experience. Its a completely surreal experience because i grew up watching the parade every year and i always looked up to the girls and contestants on the float. So its just surreal and incredible to be the one in it. I think its still kind of a little bit exciting for me. I am so excited for the parade. Now that you have the crown, over the next year what do you want to achieve . Do you have responsibilities that come with being miss chinatown u. S. A. . Absolutely. Its a role that requires you to be a true ambassador for the chinese american community. Thats what i plan to do. I have always been very interconnected with the Chinese Americans in the community. Especially with this national title, it gives me a way to go beyond borders and go out of state to connect with those across the country and hopefully internationally. Does it ever cross your mind that at this parade on saturday there will be a little girl who could very well be eventually filling your shoes . She is there somewhere maybe. Are you going to pay special attention to the little girls there . Thats something i havent thought about. Youre right. I was in those shoes maybe ten years ago. If there is anyone there, i want them to know not to be afraid, to take chances, try to do this one day because this is an experience they will never forget. I am glad i gained public speaking experience and stage presence and executive presence. Its a great professional and personal experience for anyone out there. Can you talk to us a little bit about the fact that youre a hometown gal. Woman come from all over the united states, as far as hawaii to compete in this, yet youre the one who took it home. Is that extra special . Absolutely. Millbrae is a small city. Noi that from the bay area. Its probably something very exciteing for the city. I know the mayor thinks that as well. So its really special for all of us here in the bay area, millbrae and, you know, california in general. I feel honored to take the title. Were you ever shy . Absolutely. I have always been a performer. I have danced my entire life. I think that came a little natural to me. But in terms of speaking and being shy, i think i broke out of my shell probably in college and being a part of organizations as big as 200 people. And you had to perform during the pageant . Yeah. What did you do . Aerial silks acrobatics that i started year ago actually. What does that entail . What that entails actually a climbing up and doing acrobatic moves and flips and drops on a silk hanging from the ceiling thats 33 feet zi for the viewers, what you are wearing is just beautiful. Can you explain the pieces of it . Is this what miss chinatown u. S. A. Always wears . Yeah. Its a traditional chipow which is the traditional formal wear. This is a septer that the crown winner gets to hold and dub people. But this robe is actually is something that weve worn traditionally for the pageant for many, many years. The pageants been around 59 years now. This has been worn with all the winners, which im very honored to wear. Is it heavy . I am seeing a lot of sequins. Yeah. You cant pop into starbucks wearing Something Like that. I think she could. She could pull it off. Before we have to leave, you kind of threw out what i thought was an interesting line. We were joking about waving and how you have this fluid, glamourous, elegant wave. Tell me about the package that has to come with the wave. Well, like i said earlier, you cant look confused. You got to look confident. You got to own the wave. And know that people, like you said, the little girls are looking at you and smile and connect with the people out there. Be one with the wave. Can i just mention she is a technical consultant who works at oracle. When we talk about full package, its you. Stephanie wong, miss chinatown u. S. A. We will see you tomorrow night. We will be waving. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, we have been following the procession of the Richmond Police officer gus vegas. He was killed in a Domestic Violence incident last week. Up next we are going to have more on Memorial Service that is soon to get underway. Also Surveillance Video of a possible suspect in three sexual assaults near uc berkeley. The type of women police now say he may be targeting. All right. That time of the hour where we lake to check the twitter feed. Gasia, you put the question out there. Maybe a book that holds true to your skill today that you had growing up maybe in grade school, maybe in high school . Thats right. We started a talk about learning harper lee of to kill a mockingbird died this morning. Every high schooler has read this book. We asked what meant the most to you. David lopez says the taming of the shrew. Catcher in the rye multiple times. I saw the outsiders and then the burrell show attica finch from. I had to read moby dick in high school. I was thinking why did i have to read this . It made a big impression on me. And then anna karina. These are heavy reads. Not too heavy. I mean, you know, its great. Its dean moriarty. And quoting lines in the break from on the road. I quoted a couple lines. Thats when you know that a book is sticks with you. Right. Thank you for your responses. Any time you want to talk to us, use the hashtag ktvuthe9. More rain on the way, rosemary . Tgif. Partly cloudy skies increasing through the afternoon. And again we do have just a slight chance at a few scattered showers as we roll through your friday afternoon as well. A live look there at the oakland estuary and San Francisco in the backdrop. Isnt that a beautiful start . We have got 53 degrees right now in santa rosa. San francisco checking in at 56. Oakland youre at 55. Livermore at 52. San jose 54 degrees at this hour. As we get into the second part of your day, the showers that you can see right now over portions of the north bay, we will begin to shift south. So we will look at that possibility of a few sprinkles. Tahoe right now is dry. Tahoe has an advisory that will move into play. A little bit later this afternoon, if you are thinking about heading up for the weekend, be prepared. Two to five inches of snow above 5,000 in that Winter Weather advisory in place until 8 00 this evening. Here is a look at the futurecast models through the next couple of hours. Notice it begins to creep into portions of San Francisco by about 11 00. Continues to move through now into the central baby 1 00 or so. Notice it continues to fizzle out and sort of break apart as it moves south. San jose by 3 00. Maybe a few sprinkles, but not a lot going on. As far as rainfall amounts, you can see here just a few onehundrethses expected. Maybe more for the north bay. Upper 50s, low 60s. Partly cloudy skies. Off and on spotty showers. Your extended forecast. Once we get past this bit of rain and into your bay area weekend, we are going to be clearing out. We are going to be warming up with a warming trend that begins on sunday. Back to you. Thank you very much, rosemary. Our top story this hour. A community honoring a highly regarded veteran Police Officer. A Memorial Service is scheduled to begin in just about 30 minutes from now for Richmond Police officer gus vegas. He was shot and killed in a family dispute at his home in vallejo last thursday. The Police Procession is taking his casket to the richmond Memorial Auditorium. Our sky fox flew over the funeral home 20 minutes ago as his coffin was being taken out of the mortuary. With the police escort, the drive is expected to take about half an hour. At this point the procession is going town interstate 80. We will bring in ktvus john ses sake on the telephone. Reporter i am standing inside the richmond auditorium where this, as you said, this Memorial Service is getting ready to start. Its a somber scene. Notes, as you know, a full now, as you know, this is not a full funeral. He was not killed in the line of duty. This is not what you generally see with officers coming from across the state and even really the country when Something Like that happens. But this is certainly something that everybody from richmond is here, and vallejo is here. There are officers represented from many, many departments. San jose, chp, i have seen people from fort bragg and from other counties here in northern california. So this is something that folks definitely are looking at and supporting their fellow officers through. I am going to walk outside right now. You can keep looking there inside the auditorium. I wanted to tell you a little bit about whats going on out here. Richmond Police Officers and others are lined up inside the auditorium inside the doors to welcome people when they come in kind of at attention. Then outside there are officers lined up in two rows, kind of an honor guard waiting for the casket to be escorted through this line. They will be, of course, standing at attention giving as much respect as officer to officer vegas as his family who has been through so much through all of this. So this is a very somber scene, but also a celebration. They are certainly celebrating the life of officer vegas and all that he did not only in richmond, but also in the community of vallejo. Vallejo is strongly represented here as well. Youre right, john. Definitely a celebration of his life. I know you personally know a number of the officers there in that particular department. Vegas a 15year vet. From some of the officers i have spoken to as we now take our sky fox live look here at the procession, some of the guys i have spoken to say he was loved by all his fellow officers. Very kind of easy to work with and always in a good mood no matter what was going on within the department. Are you hearing similar things about vegas . Reporter yeah. I have been hearing that all along. And i never, unfortunately, got to work with him. But everything ive heard about him, he is a guy always smiled, always laughed, always in a good mood. Although it is somber, people are positive. There is, im seeing a lot of smiles and laughter when people are greeting each other and maybe remembering some stories about officer vegas. So although it is somber, its also a positive moment, too. John, thank you so much. I had a number of people reach out on facebook saying they were officer vegas neighbors and gave incredible stories of how friendly and warm and giving he was. You think about two cities definitely mourning a large, large loss. We are going to be streaming the public memorial when it begins at 10 00 here. Sky fox continues to be over the procession and it continues down interstate 80. If you would like to watch the service live you can do that on ktvu. Com. One story. You remember watching a News Conference when the family came out and one of his sons spoke reflecting about his father and his memory was his dad always wore his shoes to the soul until they were falling apart doing so so he could provide food on the table every night for his family. Right. It strikes me a man like this that everyone loved was a Police Officer because sometimes you hear stories that are not favorable to Police Officers. But this man was apparently well loved in that job. All right. Lets go to dave clark with some other headlines we are following today. Thank you. Here are some of the top stories were following. Police in berkeley say there may be a pattern in three recent sexual assaults near the uc campus. Look at this Surveillance Video released of a possible suspect showing a man running down hay street tuesday night just after a woman says a stranger came up from behind, grabbed her, and assaulted her on benvenue avenue. The victim chased after the a attacker through a parking lot. Thats when police say this surveillance camera recorded a man unking down the street. Police say another woman was assaulted a half hour earlier. Since last thursday there have been three attacks within a few blocks of each other. We dont know if the person lives in the area or hangs out in the area. So that was one of the other reasons we want this information out there, in case somebody recognizes this person. Now, investigators say in each case collegeaged asian woman were starring the. The suspect is described as being an africanamerican or east indian man in his early 20s between 59 and 6 feet tall with dark curly hair or dreadlocks that were pulled back. Well, new express lanes are open on interstate 580 in the lsu valley livermore valley. Two eastbound lanes opened up this morning. A new westbound lane will open next monday. All three lanes will operate from 5 a. M. To 8 p. M. On weekdays. Solo drivers, you can pay a toll to use them. Its automatically taken out of your fast track account. If you carpool, you should get a fast track flex. It has a commuter mode on it so you wont be charged. Those are just a couple of the mornings headlines. Mike, back to you. All right. Dave, thank you very much. Well, speaking of sports, the super bowl of nascar is this sunday, and well, you know what, sal . Who did you talk to . Jeff gored and Darrell Waltrip about the big race and some of the cinderella stories. You know what . We got a better story right here. Adonal foyle joining us on cement. Cant put the ball down, can you . I have been trying. Its like it has a hold on me, you know . [ laughter ] thanks for coming on. What do you think of this Warriors Team that were witnessing . Not even last season. The world champions. This particular season. This bans an extraordinary year for this tea the bay area has been hungry and longing for a team like this. And to have it in this Amazing Group of guys, that makes every game fun to go at. I mean, the atmosphere in oracle has been extraordinary. And to be a part of that and see them night in, night out playing at the highest level and being one of the best teams in the league, its such an amazing thing for the bay area. This team, you know, 17 wins. 17 wins at one point, right . Is that right. I thought you loved me, man. Why you got the got to bring that up again . [ laughter ] everyone seems to have forgotten about that. Now its almost as if the warriors are expected to win, especially when steph takes the floor. Thats amazing. The expectation for this team is through the roof, not just in the bay area and around the bay area, but also through the world. Through the globe. This is like a nationally global team. And to have that be centered in the bay area i think speaks truly to the team and the quality guys that was really created on this team and really meant to play together for such a long time. You think its extraordinary. I was trying to look up your career stats this morning. Threepoint attempts . Yeah. Is it two . You see he, it wasnt my fault. What happened was [ laughter ] no, listen. He brings up a good point because the game has changed quite a bit. You were a big man. Big men have a different role, dont they . Yes. And when you look at playoff, you look at the championship run, big men played a vital part of that. Defense gets tougher. You need rebounding in order to run. Shot blocking in order to run. You need somebody to really cut off the interior so that people dont get easy baskets. As much as you shoot threepointers, we make a lot of layups in the game. You need a presence there. So there is still going to be room for big men. All the big men today, there is going to be a time and place for you in the nba. Youre an author, too. One of your books was winning the money game. We just had the trade deadline come and go. There is something i want to ask you. Channing frye is a cleveland cav. Five points a game, three rebounds in 17 minutes and he makes 8 million a year. Do you think some of these players are just getting paid way too much . No. I always like to think of it as a closed system. When you evaluate a player at a certain point in the career, they might be having a really good year. And contracts are through the duration of a certain time period. So if you look at a player over the course of a threeyear, fouryear, fiveyear period, he might be more productive in different parts, expect a contract is a locked system. So because of that, you know, a guy may not be performing well, but then again there is also this ancillary stuff that you cant take from a veteran player in the locker room. So sometimes you are in the locker room, you provide moral support, you help the young guy, you know, growing up. So when a team looks at how they invest, they want a guy that is stand up, a guy that goes to practice and plays and pushes the other team and be a presence in the locker room. That cant be understated. We are almost out of time. Quickly, how do you help guys when you talk to them about how not to blow this money . Be involved. Part of this is we have this notion its by osmosis, that things just happen. The first question when i meet a player is how much did you spend on coffee last year. They look at me like im crazy. The idea is if you know that, you know how much money you spend on cars and different things. That gives you an idea you have to know how much you spend and curtail how much you spend. Got it. Thank you so much, man. Thanks, guys. Well, speaking of sports, we are going to keep it with nascar now. Earlier this morning i spoke with jeff gordon and Darrell Waltrip. Yes, you did. About some of the stories playing out this week. Thats what makes this Great American race, the daytona 500, so special, so unique, and why its our biggest event. There is so many great story lines from the big teams and the daleearnhardt jr. s and kyle busch to the smaller teams trying to make it in. For some of these drivers and teams, just being present in the daytona 500 is a lifelong dream. Reporter do you guys miss getting in on the number 24 car and getting out there . Are you fine where you are right now . I have really been enjoying the action watching some great racing so far from this new perspective and being in the booth. There is all kinds of new challenges coming along for me that im really keeping my mind busy with. But there is no doubt on sunday, when they are off for the daytona 500, especially when they crown the champion, how can you not miss that competition and that incredible feeling of being a winner of our biggest event . I am sort of over missing it. I havent been in the car in 16 years. So what i love doing is what im doing now. Watching the other guys drive these cars. Putting on the show they put on. Reporter can you give us tips, those of us who dont watch racing a lot, what strategies to look for, that kind of thing . Yeah. Its a team sport. And there is a lot that happens. Even when the cars are making laps, there is a lot of strategy taking place. Youve got to have a great car. Youve got to have a great driver. You have to have a great pit crew. You have to have a great coach or someone to call the race. The strategist. All those things have to come together for you to win this race. And it takes a period of three and a half hours, 500 miles to see made the best calls, who ends up with a winning car. All right. The daytona 500 airs here sunday on ktvu. Well be right back with more of ktvu mornings mornings on 2 the 9. Today the movie brace premieres in theaters recalls it tells the story of jesse owens preparing for the olympic games. Six organizations across the country were selected to make a mural. Oaklands youth up rising was one of those organizations. The president and ceo of youth up rising joins us live in studio. Thanks for coming in. The story of jesse owens means what to you . Its an american story. We have always been a tale of two cities. Weve always had a really severe race divide and weve not yet fully come to grips. So the story tells the story of america and the truth of race in america. But it also tells story of how we as a nation are ready to talk about it. The movie focuses on his Early College years going to the olympics before gold medals. There is much to his story early in his life as well as what he dealt with, discrimination and i think the story offers more, right . Like heres a man who represented our nation right before world war ii where we were in a really struggle for what is right, what is justice. What ought we be as a people . And he wins four medals and pushes back the notion of arian supremecy and he comes home and he cant get a job. What do you think about the racial conversation we are having in the country now . Lacrosse. Seems like we ignited that conversation. Everyone is talking about it. Do you have thoughts on it . Everybody does, and certainly black people do. In some ways i feel like, in a lot of respect to the filmmakers for putting this story out, it says come on, america, we have a black president. Yes, we have made progress. But we ought to look at the places that we have fastball down that are not just slavery, but a the place we have fallen down that were still falling down. So i feel like we have to have a conversation that weve opened with black lives matter, but weve not fully had. Was jesse owens story on the radar of the youth you serve at youth uprising . Absolutely not. Absolutely not. I would actually go so far as saying that jesse owens story is invisible to most americans, black and white, but we might know that he got medals, but nobody understands what it meant in 1936 as a black man, that he came home to really be a gas station attendant. Thats the story, if we lift that up and talk about it, we can actually begin talking about what do we have to do to compete on the global economy, what do we have to do to fulfill the dream that we as a nation have is. It was about his family, trying to find a job. We saw earlier, and we saw some of the scenes from the movie, but the mural that was created. Yeah. What how yeah, how did it come about . They said were not going to just do the traditional put the film out, do commercials, ads and magazines. We are going to come into neighborhoods and engage neighborhoods because a mural isnt something its not a billboard. You dont slap it up. You do the design. You engage people. You get thinking people thinking not only about art, but who is it that we are dedicating this to. Its an amazing educational opportunity. Congratulations. Youth upriseing in oakland.
