Being made. Catching up with uncle jesse on his new television show. Lets show you the scene live across the south bay. Rain happening here and all parts of the bay area. Even here in oakland. Sal castaneda. Its so gray. Water rippling, rain drops on the windows. Thanks for joining us. I did what any selfconscious is september respecting parent would do, i brought you guys the good halloween candy. Thank you. I know youre a snickers guy. This will be gone in a minute the minute it hits the newsroom. Cozy up with us on this wet monday morning. Many parts of the bay area saw a steady steam coming down. Several accidents on the highways and the rain is expected to continue. If youre about to hit the roadways, allow yourself extra time and drive slowly. Take a look at the slow traffic in the south bay on 101. Pictures taken in just the past hour. The south bay has been getting soaked since the Early Morning hours. 280 in saratoga was one of many spots we saw street flooding reported thousands of people are thousands of people are without power. The largest one right now is in oakland with more than 3,000 customers in the dark. The affected area is near golf links road and the oakland zoo. Large outages reported also in san jose and san mateo. Working to restore power safely and as quickly as possible. Hate to have Power Outages and bad traffic, but the rain feels good. Best rain since april 24, 25, by far. Many areas over an inch. The list is getting endless. Livermore was one of the leaders of the pack. I think that contributed to that Altamont Pass there, sal. Well over an inch of rain. Breaks to the north. But the system is absolutely slamming parts of the peninsula, santa cruz mountains. San jose had more rain than San Francisco and oakland. Its really coming down. You can see decreasing to the north. Rainfall rates about a quarter of an inch to over an inch. Some areas picking up an inch and a quarter. We get the rain, we need the rain. Turning colder and showery. But there is snow as well. Coop cooper from kirkland came down and he said hes stoked. How are things at vail resorts . About 14 hours of heavy rain over the last 14 hours here, top to bottom rain up to 10,000 feet, down to 7,800. This morning just about 6 30 it turned to snow. Temperatures are are dropping just like you mentioned. You can see the connect ift. Its really starting to get cold. Base temperature at 7,800 feet it is 30 degrees. Up at the summit its dropped to 25 degrees. Just since 0630, 4 to 8 inches of snow, more at the summit. You can see the orange and red bands starting to pull up. Its going to be a start to a great season. Definitely wet, heavy base. We want rain to soak into that freeway mountain and then to freeze and put heavy, wet base on ton of it and thats what were starting to see. That way we can get the mountain operation on top of it and over at heavenly and north star and start to pack that down. Snow making operations are ready to go. As soon as the temperatures drop, well start subsidizing mother natures natural as well. Getting ready to open up on the 20th and 21st. I couldnt be more stoked than i am right now. When i woke up this morning, i thought i know im going to see a tweet from kevin cooper. There it was on the phone right there. Talk about that first big snow forthe communities in tahoe. What does the mood feel like on a morning like this . When you wake up and start to see it switch from rain to snow, everybody gets super excited, especially going into thanksgiving weekend. We look at thanksgiving is our opening week, all the businesses are really excited for a great season. Four years of drought, then to see any godzilla, el nino set up up. I think i raised the stoked level about 9. 7, could be 9. 8. Kevin cooper of vail resorts. Thanks very much, coop. Nice to hear him so excited. Absolutely. Not to lower the stoek level, but trafficwise the two of you have been working hard. Washing you up all the roads. I want to put up a map of a nail spill. 3 to 4,000 nails eastbound dunn barton bridge. Chp and caltrans were talking about a way to get them out. Asking for a sweeper. This is going to be there for a bit. Westbound traffic, nails are not in the westbound direction, but the traffic is still super slow. Still super slow everywhere. 580 westbound is also slow as you drive from livermore valley. It is going to be very slow out there because of the wet weather. Youre not going to have a good commute. Go ahead and think about that before you leave the house. Steve paulson, thanks for hanging out. My pleasure. I would like to bring you a bit of news. President obama signed the two year budget debt deal, so there is a little bit of calm coming from washington. Debate battle rageing within the Republican Party. Late night meeting among the gop campaigns may shake things up. This stems from the debate in colorado last week. Candidates say they want more roll oh, control. Most of the republican candidates agree on one thick. They think the debate last week was slanted and un farp. They want to see changes in future debates and theyre willing to take on the networks and their own party to make it happen. The gop candidates may have been jabbing at one noerz and the moderate torz, but now their campaigns seem to be in lock step with representatives from nearly all of the candidates hud link at a hotel just outside of washington. Were going to have a bigger say in the format discussions going forward. There is general agreement within the party that the colorado debate hosted by cnbc went off the rails with questions many thought were biased and designed to embarrass the candidates. That led the campaigns to cancel the next nbc debate. They want to wrestle debate control from republican chairman. Demanding among other things a two hour time limit, opening and closing statements, equal time for candidates and even control over some of the on screen graphics used by the networks. We need to just tighten it up a little bit and do it more like a professional type of debate. This structure is not leading to the best candidate coming out of the debates. I would like to have smaller groups, all of us be heard equally, asked better questions. If beel do that, well get the best nominee to win an election we cant afford to lose. The bottom line is the candidates may have some Bargaining Power because these debates have been such big ratings draws. In washington, doug, fox news. Joining us on the phone is political analyst brian. Good morning. My question question is are are we getting fairly close to the networks somewhat giving up editorial control of the debates to the campaigns . Well, theyre certainly going to give more control to the campaigns. Given the debate the other night, i think they realize that they have great power collectively. So theyre going to exercise as much of it as they can. Sympathy there some dafrng isnt there some danger in doing that . Well, i think for the networks, yeah. For the networks . Absolutely. Because now theyre more constrained and theyre kind of towing the party line, no pun intended. But at the same time. I think suggestions that are being made may actually have more balance on the stage than what youre seeing today. Do you think this change will help some of these candidates or will it be more of the same . It would help if some of the candidates who seem to be shut out in terms of time would be able to give their opinions on things. And what were seeing right now, of course, is a series of debates where the focus is on the front runners and some other people never even get a word in edgewise. I think from that standpoint it could provide more balance between all of the debaters on the stage. Could this be seen as whining by people who didnt do well in the last debate . I think everybody collectively tion analysts, anybody else who looked at that collectively, analysts, anybody else who looked at the know it went off the rails. People have watched that now for three debates and are saying can we get to substance here . Can we actually talk about the issues . A lot of that falls on the candidates, certainly, but certainly also the format of these debates is lending itself to that kind of discussion when you kind of start out the discussion or the debate by pitting one candidate against another, youre not really asking questions for the purpose of getting answers. Youre looking to get something going. Brian, do you think there is going to be a win 0ing of candidates anytime soon . Part of the reason its been so un yieldy is because there are so many people on the stage. The win owing has to begin quickly. Money is running out for many, thats an issue. The other thing is i think there is a lot of pressure by the republicans and Republican Party to start helping people at 1 and 2 exit. Brian sobel joining us this morning for that conversation. Thank you, brian. Coming up, talking about a serious story out of San Francisco. Woman robbed and beaten with a baseball bat on the San Francisco state campus. What we know is that this happened over the weekend near a designated smoking area at mary ward hall, a Residence Hall here on campus at the 800 block of font boulevard. Police say this happened after 1 in the morning on sunday. A woman and her friend were walking on the sidewalk where three other women were hanging out nearby. These are the suspects. The three suspects approached the two. There was verbal altercation, yelling, a courting to police. One of the three took out a mini baseball bat and started beating on the victim several times. The suspects got away with the victims stuff, leaving her with injuries to her face and several abrasions. We got reaction from a student who lives nearby. I guess just keep an eye out. Because you never know. It can be somebody who you least expect, like, it could be a girl. Police say one of the attackers is between 18 and 20 years old with shoulder length dark hair and lip studs. She was wearing a giants tshirt and high heels. The second suspect has curly shoulder length hair and was wearing large bamboo earrings. There is no description of a third suspect. As we take it back out here, pretty vague description on the cars the suspects got away in. Police say one was a four door car, the other a black four door car. A couple of hot issues on the ballot for tomorrow, starting with the mayor. Thats right. But mayor ed lee is running unopposed. Probably a shoe in. We know that flyers went out to some folks saying vote for other people, but lee seems to be the clear favorite. Back in the spring, there was concern that some other people might run, throw hats in the ring. But that never happened. I think its safe to say hell be the definite favorite going into the election tomorrow. Not running unopposed is the sheriff of San Francisco. Thats right. His contender is vicky hen see. She, of course, was the person who took over when ross had his Domestic Violence thing that he was dealing with. A lot of people remember her from that. I think the one poly looked at showed vicky was the clear front runner. Really this is a race that well just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow. There has been a lot of support on both sides. Lets talk about propositions. I want to talk about one because it seems at least in conversations ive had about them, prop f seems to stand out, the air bnb one, interesting to see how this turns out at the end of tomorrow night. Yeah. I think those of us in the media receive emails from both sides every day. This is a very contentious race. We know that air bnb of course does not want prop f to pass. This would have basically a pop position that would create more restrictions, be tighter for short term rentals. Air bnb has probably thrown close to 2 million into getting this proposition not passed. The people for prop f are very vocal as well. Had a lot of rallies, had one on union square last week. Really this is anybodys race here as well. Lot of cash being thrown into that one. Before we let you go, whats going on in the Mission District today . Well, we had halloween, of course, over the weekend and that was sure fun. Then now we have the celebration that a lot of latinos celebrate. Day of the dead, procession starts at 22 and bryant streets, concludes at 21 and bryant. Thats at 7 00. 4 00, a little earlier, festival of alters at garfield park. Definitely a lot of things going on. Also celebrations with music, food, and poetry. The celebration continues. Yes, it does. Tara, thank you for taking the time to fill us in. It was initially thought the mayor would be unopposed, there are five others running. Mayor ed lee expected to win with very wide support. Staying in the city, another more controversial ballots pressure is aimed at preserving the mission direct. Supporters gathered for a town hall meeting. Proposing 18 months moratorium for new housing. If it doesnt pass, evictions will continue and the mission will lose diversity in the coming years. The mission by 2025 would lose 26 of latino population and another 27 of the working class population. Basically people making less than 100,000 a year. Opponents say more market rate construction boosts the San Francisco economy and provides revenue that could be used to Fund Affordable Housing programs. San francisco putting lauras law into effect today. Allows judges to force severely mentally ill people to get treatment. The law is named for 19yearold Mental Health worker laura wilcox, who was shot to death by a mentally ill man who resisted efforts to get him into treatment. Students at College Park High school in Pleasant Hill are going back to school, dealing with the weekend deaths of two classmates. Two teen girls were killed in a crash over the weekend. The driver has serious injuries allie rasmus says School Administrators are reaching out to students who may need help in coping. Reporter students here at College Park High school headed into class, but what was different about today is there are going to be grief counselors on hand on campus to help students cope with the loss of two classmates. Two teenage girls were killed in a crash halloween weekend around 3 00 early sunday morning. Their friend, the teen driver, is in the hospital in serious condition. Chp says it doesnt appear that drugs and alcohol were factors. Instead, investigators say the driver told them she had fallen asleep at the wheel when she veered off the road and hit a tree going about 60 miles per hour. One of the things theyre looking into is whether she was driving with a provisional license, meaning she wouldnt have been allowed to drive at night with other teens in the car. We had had a changs to speak with the principal about the tragedy. Its affecting the staff, the kids, the community. Weve gone through our protocols. And we have up to 15 extra counselors here today servicing our students and our staff. Kids are working through it. Theyre distraught. Just a the tough time here at college park. Last night friends and fellow students attended a memorial. Grief counselors on hand to help classmates and friends of the teens and administrators plan on having the grief counselors for as long as they are needed allie rasmus, in Pleasant Hill. Driver in Southern California says he wont work for uber anymore after being attacked last weekend by a passenger. It was all recorded on a dashcam. This may be hard for you to watch. The driver said he was worried about the passenger when he refused to put on his seat belt. So the driver turned the dashcam around to face the cars back seat. When the passenger didnt seem coherent enough to give directions, he pulled over and said the ride was over. Thats when the passenger turned violent. After ten seconds the driver was able to pull out either mace or pepper spray and spray the man. The driver told a Southern California tv station the quality of riders has gone down. The passenger faces assault and public intoxication charges. Unbelievable. The driver had the thought to have the dashcam and the mace. And the mans face was clearly shown on tv and now people figured out who it was. You dont get away with stuff these days. Pam cook here to talk about the new path hewlettpackard is taking and the reason behind the move. Its going to be very interesting. As of today, hewlettpackard is run and traded as two separate companies. Ceo meg whitman says the move is needed to stay competitive, but some wonld wonder if its too late. Hp enterprise and hp incorporated, which is going to stick to the pc and printer business. Analyst say both companies have a lot of competition. The enterprise side faced with customers switching from servers to cloud servers. The pc side has already fallen behind apple and dell. But it does have a strong hold in the printing business. Ceo whitman says hp is not necessarily going to try to keep up with competitors, but that every company, big and small has to transform its it systems and hp is the company to do that in more of a private cloud type of Service Rather than the Cloud Computing at these other companies. Ive been following hewlettpackard for a long time, my mom retired from the company. Seems to me the general consensus has really moved from innovative leader when the two founders start the Company Almost 76 years ago. They were in the garng in the beginning of whats now Silicon Valley and theyre theyre playing catch up. Way behind. Is this decemberer ags . Is that desperation . Is that too strong . Some analysts think this is needed to survive. Really too early to tell. Hewlettpackard is a grandfather, if you will, of Silicon Valley, immense size makes it a big ship. Since meg whitman took over in 2011, shes cut 80,000 jobs worldwide. She has trimmed it down. Well continue to watch. Thank you very much, pam. Sure i have always wanted a family. But have i . In grandfather, john stamos plays a man who suddenly learns he has an adult son and granddaughter, making him a grandfather. Joining us this morning, two of the hottest grandparents youll ever see, john stamos and paget brewster. Can i ask you two, in hollywood where everybody wants tore forever 27, did you ever think youd be playing grandparents at this point in youre life . Was there any reservation about crossing over into that part . Not for me . I didnt think i would be playing it, but i loved the idea of it. I thought there is an area for a lot of comedy and fun and when we were casting the role of sarah, we wanted an act stress not afraid to say hey, im in my mid40s and she came in and is so beautiful and smart and really made this special. I think her character accepts it ask calls her grand grandmother. And hes sort of struggling with it because hes more of a hollywood, young babes like me, im not a grandpa. You work here in the bay area, i actually remember you because i was working here at the same time. You had a little talk show and you were on tv. Yeah, we shot it at kpix. We dont talk about kpix here. Right. Im excited that you know that. Absolutely. I lived in San Francisco, the Tanner Family lived in San Francisco. There you go. You throw that uncle jesse card down. Ive got to ask you, paget, close to two decades ago, you debuted as kathy on friends. How much confidence did that role give you to say, you know what, i can do this, play these characters on the screen and do you attribute that character to getting you where you are today . Im realizing now, thank you for asking that question, that i felt the exact same thing at that friends audition that i did with the audition with john, which is im never going to get this part, so im just going to go have a good time and get to meet Matthew Perry or john stamos. Im going to have fun. It was believing i could never get it that kept me from being nervous and probably helped me get it. I it was so well written, i thought oh, shis sar and is shes this is sarah and she spends the whole show going against his character, which is fun. The were on for a full season this year. 22 episodes. Were going to be around and doing that in a very competitive tuesday night. For the folks here watching who have not seen an episode, john, basically over time you fall in love not with women, but the idea of being a great dad and great grandfather . Well, that is the conflict. How much do you want to compromise . I think deep down is a guy who always wanted that and its something thats missing. Non biographical, really. Be careful what you wish for. Its all about the struggle to balance old life with new life and how much to give up. I think its all ripe for kom key deand also a lot comedy and also leads into relatable things with relationships, with being all characters are single at this point. In a family comedy. Thats interesting too. Its unconventional family. Its more normal than not to have Single Parents now. Absolutely. John stamos, paget brewster, the hottest grandparents youll ever see. We listen to the American Academy of pediatrics which said no screen time before the age of two. Now revising it saying its hopelessly outdated. We stuck to that.
