She hopes this case will show that immigration policies are unnecessarily splitting up problems and hurting those who contribute to the economy and the community. They deserve a chance. One of the counter protesters being killed there. In the meantime across the bay in San Francisco, officials there are preparing for a separate rally by another alt right group on the same weekend. Patriot prayer has already obtained a permit for an event at chrissy field on saturday, august 26th. The golden gate Recreation Area that oversees that land where chrissy field sits, tells the chronicle that park officials are reviewing the situation and are assessing the safety issues that potentially could surround the rally at this time and obviously making plans for both the rally and the counter protesters. The wildfire grew from 900 acres to 1600 acres in a matter of hours yesterday. You can see the smoke billowing from the fire in the photographs. The fire is burning in steep rocky terrain. Smoke is visible along parts of highway 41. The man charged with starting the grizzly peak fire will appear in court today. He is charged with a series of crimes including arson. There was an earlier crash at the toll plaza but they cleared it out of the way quickly. We see the traffic on interstate 880 is moving well past the oracle arena. Still slow traffic on highway 4. It is thick from pittsburgh all the way to concord. 680 is slow from walnut creek into alamo. Dumb dumbing bridge traffic is moderately heavy. No major problems getting across to the other side on the peninsula. Theres a new proposal to bring Commuter Rail Service Across the southern end of the bay. This time it has strong support from facebook. Leigh martinez is live in menlo park. The plan is to use a bridge that has been out of service for decades. Right. Reporter thats right. If youre familiar with the south bay, you know how bad the traffic can be, especially during the rush hour. When facebook expanded its new campus to the dumbarton bridge, it was facebook who revived the idea of having cal trains crossing over the bay. It is not a new idea. It has been talked about for about two decades, the plan to connect cal trains to the south bay. Now facebook and sam trans wants to hear from you. There are two public hearings. One at 6 30 tonight at the library and again tomorrow night at 6 30 in the palo alto library. Many says it sounds like a good idea but worry about the construction that would come with it. Ideally, it would. But then you have to look at the downtime of how much construction time that will take up. It takes me about an hour and a half to get from san mateo to my house, which is insane. And it is just the population has been growing so fast ever since facebook took over the city. Reporter now, facebook funded this new study with the leadership of sam trans. Sam trans is a san mateo bus service that owns the bridge. The bridge runs parallel to highway 84. The plan calls for running cal train over the bridge, connecting redwood city and newark and later to union city by around 2030. It would be the first transbay rail crossing since the bart tube. The project has an estimated cost of nearly 1. 3 billion. Now, this is a an idea that, again, thats been floated around for a long teem. More recently in the past decade because more jobs have moved to the mid peninsula but housing here is scarce. People are commuting as far away as tracy in the central valley. They are commuting all the way over here. This is why the idea is seeming to take off. After talking to locals this morning, they say it sounds like a great idea but the main concern is how long the project will take. It would be finalized by maybe 2035. They want to know if construction would make traffic worse west africa it gets better. Thank you. The man accused of shooting and killing a Liquor Store Owner will be formally charged with murder and attempted robbery in court this afternoon. 21yearold hendricks is accused of killing charlie ly during a failed robbery last week. He shot his unarmed neighbor with a stolen gone but got off on a murder charge after he claimed self defense. 43yearold joshua brown faces multiple charges. He confronted a caltrans work crew at his rural property. He lost a Court Dispute and was ordered to let another landowner share the driveway. He carved out a second driveway. He was angry that the caltrans crew was building a barrier to black access to the second driveway. Authorities say he fired three rounds at the road crew and chp. His mother told ktvu that he was pushed over the edge. He has a good heart. And he doesnt mean to hurt anybody. But he has had enough. He has had enough of the judicial system that pushed him. Authorities set up roadblocks during the manhunt. Brown shot at them several more times during the search. S. W. A. T. Teams were called in, a shelter in place was ordered for the area. They were worried about boob etraps so they used a robot to check out a property. Brown eventually surrendered. We have a followup to the freeway shooting yesterday in the bay area. The Highway Patrol is asking for help in locating the person responsible for the attack that could have been a result of road rage. It happened just about 2 30 yesterday morning. Four men were in a mitsubishi when several men in a white vehicle pulled up and opened fire. The driver was hit in the head but managed to pull over to the center divide. He is listed in Critical Condition this morning. We dont have anything. We dont have anything other than it was a white sedan. Thats it. If you were in this area around 2 30, you heard or saw something, please call your local chp office and tell them. The Highway Patrol shut southbound 880 down for more than six hours during their investigation. There is no surveillance camera along that stretch of 880. The department of justice has requested information about visitors a website used to organize protests against President Trump on inauguration day. A 17yearold boy has been charged for vandalizing a Holocaust Memorial in boston. The suspect was tackled by two bystanders and held down until officers arrived. The teen will be charged with willful and malicious destruction of property. This is the second time that the memorial has been vandalized this summer. Former california governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is making a big donation in response to the violence in charlottesville. He will be donating 100,000 to Los Angeles Based nonprofit Simon Rosenthal center. He says that he has worked with the antihate organization for decades and hopes to encourage others to donate to similar groups and help spread tolerance in the United States. Californias attorney general joining San Francisco officials in pushing back against the federal governments threat to withhold money from sanctuary cities. The attorney general along with San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced a lawsuit against the Trump Administration. They say the president s executive order to withhold federal funding for socalled sanctuary jurisdictions could cost the city 22 million in federal funds. It is a low blow to our men and women who wear the badge for the federal government to threaten their crimefighting resources in order to force them to do the work of the federal government when it comes to immigration enforcement. We have a president who is bent on trying to split up hardworking families by falsely saying that sanctuary cities are havens for criminals. They both vow to fight the Trump Administration to the end saying theyre in the Public Safety business, not the deportation business. Activists will hold marches outside of the capitol in support of the dream act. Nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the u. S. When they were children have been protected under deportation under the program. They believe people are trying to cross the border illegally because of the dream act. The state of texas has threatened to sue the government if the program is not phased out by september 5th. Nfl commissioner Roger Goodell is expressing his opinion about National Anthem protests. He said the anthem is a special moment and a point of pride. He said he wants to respect the rights of players across the league to sit during the anthem as a form of protest. I was with the jets a few weeks ago. And one of the players was there in the fan forum and we were talking about this and they were asked the same question. And they said, you know, theres a time and a place. And thats thats what we all have to sort of understand, the responsibility of doing it at the right time and in the right way. And what we see is a lot of our players going into the community and really picking the platform that they have and being active and creating dialogue and actually making positive change. But the stadium is located off campus. Uc berkeley would be the First College in the state to offer alcohol at an oncampus stadium. Highway 4 is slow and so is 680 westbound. 580 is slowing now in dublin. And dumbarton and south bay commute are slow. We will talk about the south bay commute a little bit more in detail next. Supporters of an oakland nurse are hoping for a reprieve so she and her family can stay in the United States. The plan is for Maria Sanchez and her family to board a plane that will take them to mexico around 1 00 this afternoon. This will be about 24 hours a group of friends, coworkers and supporters gathered to rally and support mendozasanchez and her family yesterday afternoon. In north carolina, a crowd tore down a confederate statue as a way to protest racial intolerance. It had been in place for 93 years but came down in a matter of moments. Protesters pulled it to the ground. Afterwards people could be seen kick thanksgiving and spitting on it. President trump specifically condemned the neo nazi and white supremacist groups two days after the rally in virginia. Many people remain upset that it took the president two days to speak out against White Nationalists, neonazis and the Klu Klux Klan. Well, back here in the bay area, some officials fear that there could be violent protests similar to the clashes in charlottesville. Reporter Berkeley Police are making plans and trying to keep the place here in the city. Later this month, no marxism in america will hold a rally here on Martin Luther king way. It is supposed to be on sunday, august 27th. So the weekend after next. You might remember that earlier this year here in berkeley, there are similar events, also in the same park. Some of the demonstrations turned violent. There were three separate rallies by altright groups here in berkeley in march and april of this year. And things often turned ugly when Trump Supporters clashed with antifacist protesters in the park. Many are deeply concerned about the upcoming demonstration getting out of hand, especially given the events that unfolded in charlottesville this past weekend. Every available Police Officer will be on duty in berkeley when the rally happens later this month. The fire continues to grow near Yosemite National park this morning. The difficulty in putting out the flames. The red cross estimates some 600 people are still missing as the death pole from a massive mudslide continues to rise. Survivors and volunteers dug will you the mud and de wry in a desperate search for missing relatives. A seen i can section of Yosemite National park is covered in wildfire. It started on sunday in the Mariposa County in the southern part of the park. The wildfire grew from 900 acres to more than 1600 acres in a matter of hours yesterday. The man charged with arson for allegedly starting the grizzly peak fire earlier this month is schedule today appear in court this morning. Batista is charged with a series of crimes including arson. Californias attorney general is joining San Francisco officials in pushing back against the federal governments threat to withhold money from sanctuary cities. The attorney general along with San Franciscos City Attorney herrera announced a lawsuit against the Trump Administration. They say the president s executive order to withhold federal funding for socalled sanctuary jurisdictions could cost the city 28 million in federal funds. Its a low blow. We have a president who is bent on trying to punish cities that prioritize real safety over splitting up families by falsely claiming that sanctuary cities are havens for criminals. Opponents believe that people are trying to cross the border illegally because of the dream act.
