Were going to start off in the south bay. Northbound 280 traffic doesnt look bad. It is busier up to highway 880 or interstate 880 and the 280 interchange. You can see that the traffic stays that way into cupertino. Also a crash in Mountain View northbound 101 as you come up san antonio road. The traffic is backed up from 237, getting up to the area. You might want to think about perhaps using a different route to get into Mountain View and palo alto if youre heading northbound. Southbound 101 on the sfo on ramp to southbound 101 there is a crash. It is not blocking the lanes of the actual freeway but everyone can see it. Traffic slow into the area from san bruin a. Southbound 280 traffic will be slow approaching the san bruin aarea. This is 880 in the east bay. So far so good here in front of the coliseum. At the bay bridge toll plaza we have a 25minute delay. 7 02. Back to the desk. A power outage in the east bay. At one time electricity was out for nearly 3,000 pg e customers in danville. The outage is near 680 and the blackhawk area of danville. Christien kafton is live there where residents are getting a closer look at what caused the lights to go out for a time. Reporter yeah. Neighbors are out, pg e crews are out right now. Were getting our first look at the utility pole that was dragged down by the tree last night. Lets actually go ahead and show you the tree as well. You can see this large tree that came down around 1 45 this morning. Pg e cruise telling neighbors that when the tree came down it caused significant damage to the lines. A few hundred customers may be looking at an allday outage, up to 12 hours as crews work hard to repair damage and restore service. Initially the power outage knocked out power to 2900 customers. Crews arrived on scene to find that the tree brought down the power line and they were working to reroute power to restore power to the customers. 20 minutes after they arrived, crews restored service to the majority of customers. Right now 400 to 500 customers are still without power. Neighbors say when the tree came down, it came down with a bang. It was about 2 00 in the morning and you hear a big crash. Initially i thought maybe there was a Traffic Accident out here. But i stepped out of my front yard and saw that my neighbors tree had come down. And it brought down that power line too. Was the power line arcing or anything when you came out. No. I think it already tripped the emergency breaker or whatever. But that was certainly a concern. Reporter about an hour ago, we made our way to the middle school. The school was dark at that time. We also drove by monte vista high school. It had power. The power outage could affect your commute. No word if it will impact start times at the middle school or high school. We are working to find that information for you right now. Coming back to our shot, neighbors are stressing that the homeowner where the tree came down was very diligent in taking care of the tree. She had worked with arborists but this years rain proved to be much too for the tree to handle. We looked at the inside of the tree and it was completely rotted from the inside out. Again, neighbors stressing she has been taking good care of the tree but it was simply too much. You can see pg e crews working this morning. The latest that were hearing is that some residents could be without power for up to 12 hours. It could be an allday affair for some folks. Christien kafton, thank you. Now, one of the people who will be inside of the courtroom to hear todays verdict is debbie boyd, whose daughter was killed near sacramento back in 2005. I just am really praying for peace for the lamars and the jury that they have arrived at the right verdict and that justice is served for sierra. Reporter garciatorres never took the stand during this long trial. But he did tell police at one point that he never met sierra lamar. Now, the defense during the case tried to raise the possibility that sierra lamar simply ran away. Now, if he is found guilty of murder, this same jury is going to then decide whether Garcia Torres gets the death penalty. Again, the jury has reached its verdict. That verdict will be read at sometime at some point after 9 00 this morning here at superior court in Santa Clara County in san jose. It takes about 25 minutes to get through the toll plaza to get on to the bridge. Northbound 880 is slowing down getting into downtown oakland. Highway 4 remains slow. In just about an hour, the jury will read the verdict in the garciatorres case. Sierra lamar disappeared on her way to school five years ago north of morgan hill and her body was never found. Alex savidge is joining us live from the Santa Clara County courthouse there in san jose where, alex, people are already lining up to get inside of the courtroom. Reporter they absolutely are. A lot of folks got here early this morning to the hall of justice so they could be in the audience to hear the verdict read. Let me show you the line of people making their way inside of the courthouse. The people coming here today are volunteers who have helped search for sierra lamar over the past five years. Now, after listening to three months of testimony, the jury in this case took just two days to reach its verdict. Garciatorres is charged with kidnapping and murdering sierra lamar. She disappeared back in 2012 on her way to school. Prosecutors in this case have an uphill battle. They are trying to win a conviction without a body. Her body was never found. They have never found a murder weapon or a crime scene. But sierra lamars dna was found on a rope inside of garciatorres car. Now, legal analyst steven clark says when a jury reaches a verdict quickly it is not typically good for the defendant. But it could go either way in this case. The defense is suggesting that sierra lamar is still alive. If the jury didnt get past that issue, then that could be quickly decided that if she is still alive, theres no way that this can be a murder. Reporter and the defense has suggested during this case that possibly sierra lamar simply ran away. Garciatorres never testified during this trial. But he did tell investigators that he never met the 15year old. Now, if garciatorres is convicted on the murder charge, this same jury will then decide whether he will get the death penalty. As we bring you back out here to a live picture this morning outside of the hall of justice in san jose, i want to bring in one of the people who will be in the audience this morning to hear the verdict read. You are one of the volunteers for the past five years who has continued to search for sierra lamar here in the south bay. Why was it so important for you to be in this courtroom today to hear this verdict . Well, hopefully he is convicted. That would take a lot of pressure off of us. It still doesnt give us the location of sierra. And this is the reason that were im here. To see how it turns out. And im going to continue to search for her even after this moment here at the courthouse. Reporter what is your heart, your gut tell you about how this is going to go . Well, i believe he is going to be convicted of this crime. He knows it. We know it. And im pretty sure the jury believes sorry, guys. Very emotional. Reporter i understand. A very emotional day for a lot of people. One of the sierra lamar one of the searchers involved in looking for sierra lamar over the past five years. I should point out while we were speaking with douglas, we saw sierra lamars father entering the courtroom. It will be a packed house. The verdict will be read sometime after 9 00 this morning. Ill be in the courtroom and we will have full coverage on mornings on 2. Send it back to you for now. Thank you, alex. We hope you stay with ktvu for continuing coverage of the case. Police are looking for a man wanted in connection with a hate crime attack at at San Francisco b. A. R. T. Station. According to b. A. R. T. Police, the suspect walked up to the victim on the train platform and shouted homophobic slurs and punched in the face. It happened at about 11 30 last night at the powell station. He was wearing a security uniform. Police stopped the train in oakland and they were unable to find the attacker. A legal claim has been filed against b. A. R. T. Two weeks after a takeover robbery apoured a train. Now were hearing from one of the victims. Cristina rendon has the story. My family couldnt think of this happening to another family in six months. If we dont take b. A. R. T. To task and hold them accountable for this. Reporter rusty says he was beaten by a group of juveniles on a b. A. R. T. Train when it stopped at the Oakland Coliseum station last month. He was sitting across from his wife and 18yearold daughter. They were on their way home after celebrating their daughters birthday in San Francisco. We were pulling in and they were beating on the train. Right where we were sitting. And when they walked on the train, there wasnt a care in the world. They didnt hesitate or say a word to anybody. They immediately started beating and robbing us. Reporter he says three juveniles beat him on the head, arms, kicked him in the ribs and stole his iphone before they targeted other passengers and took his wifes purse. My wife leaned over on top of my daughter to protect her. They started beating on me and my daughter was screaming obviously. Reporter he says investigators showed him Surveillance Video to help identify some of the suspects. He says that video shows the mob had previously boarded and deboarded a San Franciscobound train before the attack. The family attorney paul justy wants the video released to the public but b. A. R. T. Is keeping it private because the suspects are juveniles. In our opinion when you commit a crime in a public forum like this, particularly when you know youre on video surveillance, you forfeit any right to privacy. Reporter he says that b. A. R. T. Employees were negligent in keeping riders safe by failing to warn or intercept the group before boarding the train. There has to be a bigger Police Presence on the trains and platforms in the stations. Reporter he says that b. A. R. T. Needs to do better. We want them to start protecting the citizens who use the system. Reporter a spoke person would not comment on pending litigation but said there were increased Police Patrols working that night and six of nine cars had working cameras that captured the robberies and suspects. That bodes well for you if you can wait it out. Perhaps hang out longer. Northbound 880 past the coliseum, you will see slowing as it normally is slow through the area. Also slow traffic in the east bay still. Again, we have been noticing the trends and highway 4 continues to be very slow. It has not improved a bit. And 680 is also slow. They will be checking in at 73. A few areas of patchy fog but it is held in check today. Mostly sunny and warmer. This though will be the warmest day. By tomorrow, low clouds look like they want to come charging back. It will be cooler and breezy and we will take that into the weekend and early next week. Temperatures 6 to 16 degrees below average by the time we get to friday. 48 at the bodega bay in the water. Half moon bay 51.
