And you are taking alive look at Arlington National cemetery on this veterans day where a wreath laying ceremony by the president is about to get underway there at the tomb of the unknowns. Lets listen in. [bagpipes] [trumpets] veterans day pays tribute to all American Veterans living or dead. We give thanks to the living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peace time. With that, good morning, everyone. Welcome back to mornings on 2. It is friday, november 11. Im mike mibach. And im gasia mikaelian. Lets check our weather in the bay area. A lot of people have veterans day off. It is beautiful outside. It is a nice day. Maybe a little fog. But after that lifts we will have a mostly sunny day. Clouds come in late tonight, early saturday. Overall a lot of sunshine this week. In fact our good friend chloe up in clearlake with a nice sunrise picture here. 52 with an east breeze. Rain later, much, much later. I think early saturday. There wont be much even that far north. Mostly sunny skies. High clouds zipping through. Overall about the same as yesterday. Maybe a couple degrees cooler. 50s and 60s already. I mean, theres some locations already at 60 degrees. Here we go again. A couple of 40s. But more 50s and 60s now. Temperatures are warming up rapidly. This system wrapping up will be late to arrive. Which means it will be mostly after 5 00 tonight. Unless youre up north. For sure you will deal with it. Another day of 60s and 70s. Cooler tomorrow. Sal, 8 03. So far quiet or is there something on your screens. There is nothing on my screen. And it is quiet. We have a couple of issues, steve, but for the most part in general, we have a nice looking commute throughout the east bay. I want to show you something. This is what the east shore freeway would look like if we had commutes with no traffic. It takes about 18 minutes to drive from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze when traffic is at or near the speed limit. Sometimes we have commutes that take 90 minutes to do this stretch or sometimes an hour. You get the point. Today is lighter than usual. Unfortunately one person died in this crash. It is not causing a big jam but you will see Police Activity there. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza. It is light. They have turned the metering lights off. There was a backup for about an hour between 7 00 and 8 00 or 7 00 to 7 30. But it is gone and traffic looks good. The south bay, the Silicon Valley commute has a pretty decent commute. There is slow traffic on northbound 101 approaching 880. If we back off here, you can see most of the Silicon Valley commute looks good. Likewise for the east bay commute. We begin with developing news. We just learned the fbi is assisting Oakland Police in a triple Homicide Investigation. It unfolded near san leandro street and 2nd avenue shortly after midnight. Christien kafton is on the scene there with the latest on the story. Reporter yeah. Mike, we have learned why the fbi is on scene. If you take a look, you can see the van. That is the fbi equipment on scene. Oakland police say that fbi has forensic and evidence gathering resource thats oakland pd dont have. That is why theyre working with the fbi on this case. Police are confirmingwhat my source told me earlier this morning, that three people are dead. One person in custody. Police now say that officers were called to the 9400 block of du nba r on a report of shots fired. They found one victim and smoke coming from a nearby garage. They called fire crews. Once they arrived, two other victims were found in the structure. At least one of the victims in the case is female. One person is being held in connection with this case at this hour. We are doing we are questioning a person that is involved in this. Were still in the process of gathering evidence and witnesses. So were still in the early stages of this investigation. Reporter so far police arent telling us if the suspect is male or female or telling us what may have been behind this triple homicide. Police are saying that the crime scene though is extensive. Theyre telling that you say they expect to be out here until early afternoon, possibly as late as 2 00 p. M. So, again, an Ongoing Investigation into a triple homicide here. And a Fire Investigation because that is part of all of this. As i had said before, they discovered that initial victim called for the Fire Department to come on out and discovered two more victims. Clearly as you can tell, an extensive crime scene. That is why it will take a while to process the scene. Thank you, christien kafton. Just a few hours earlier in oakland there was an anti trump protest for the Third Straight night. About 1,000 people marched through downtown oakland. The rally itself was peaceful. When it ended, small groups splintered off and as we have seen so many times before, that is when trouble started. Demonstrators vandalized seven businesses, including an audi and bmw dealership. They broke windows to the building, damaged cars inside as well. Oakland Police Arrested 11 people and issued 7 citations. Authorities say one suspect had a number of pipe bombs. Two people were arrested on telegraph avenue. Coming up, a live report on the damage and what city leaders have to say. Donald trump first criticized demonstrators saying, quote, just had an open and successful election. Now professional protesters incited by the media. Very unfair. News week reports pope francis is asking catholics to pray that the lord will, quote, hear enlightened and sustain americas president elect. You will recall that the pope has been a vocal critic of trumps plan to build a wall on the u. S. Mexico border saying he should work to build bridges instead. Were also getting a look at one womans chance meeting with Hillary Clinton. Margo posted this photo to her Facebook Page. She was heart broken over the results of the election so she took a hike yesterday in new york. She stepped into a clearing and saw bill and Hillary Clinton. She hugged clinton and said she was proud to vote for her. By the way, bill clinton is the one who took the photo. A dumping doughnuts stirring up controversy. The donuts have two words on them. Trump and wall. That refers to Trumps Campaign promise to build a wall along the u. S. Mexico border. The donuts are receiving mixed reviews. Some are deeply offended. I am proamerica. So i dont see anything wrong with them. I dont know if i would go out of my way to purchase them. Deportation is a reality that we face every day. Sure it is a stupid donut but what is the point of it . Who is laughing at it . Dunking donuts said that the donuts were inappropriately frosted. The franchise was told to remove the doughnuts. Honoring those who served on this veterans day. In 20 minutes, we will show you the events happening across the bay area. A few patches of fog and a band of high clouds. He laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown. That will be the last time that he does that as president. Were going to stay monitoring this in our news room and we will bring you the president s comments later this morning. We do know that president obama has asked congress for 11. 6 billion in additional war related funding to fight isis, maintain overseas troop levels and modernize the helicopter fleet. The time is 8 15. Lets check in with Sal Castaneda on that friday commute. Good morning, sal. Good morning, mike and gasia. Mostly good traffic right now. I want to mention a major Traffic Accident that we have seen or we have heard about in San Francisco on lincoln in San Francisco near the stadium. In that area. Were trying to find out more about it. It sounds rather serious. On the freeways, you can see that traffic is moving along very well as you drive into San Francisco. This commute is not slow at all. Which is unusual. Although it is not unusual for veterans day when a lot of people have the day off. This is a look now at the highway 4 commute, which is completely improved coming in from antioch to bay point and over the hill to concord. And on the Silicon Valley commute and also the east bay commute, most of the freeways are light. A lot lighter than usual. You will see some slow traffic in spots. If youre used to driving on a regular commute day, this will seem light to you. 8 16. Lets go to steve with the weather. Areas of fog this morning. A band of high clouds over us now. Partly sunny. Overall it will be mostly sunny today. Probably a couple degrees cooler than the last couple of days. We have been unseasonably warm. But it will still be above average for this time of year. You can see there is a system that is just wrapping itself up. Boy, as it does, it will slow down. I think except for the higher clouds over us right now, the rest of the day will be mostly sunny. Increasing clouds later on from the system. Weak. Patchy fog underneath that as well. Even the north coast, humboldt county has to wait on this system. It wont be here until late tonight. You see the moisture thinning out rapidly. With that in mind, we have a good day on tap. The next system will arrive late tonight and into saturday morning. 50s and 60s already. Napa airport already 60. Oakland 60. San rafael in there. San francisco. Sfo at 62. It is close for many. We had upper 40s for a while but were bouncing off those fast. 54 seems popular there in danville and pleasanton and the concord pa. There will be light rain. This is a weak system unless youre up north. For us, morning fog and hazy skies. A few high clouds. The system will drag across into saturday. In fact it may not make it that far f it does south of that, there wont be much. The next system tore wednesday looking good. Already showing up here. That will give everybody widespread rain. Hazy sunshine and mild to warm temps again. The days dont last long but we have upper 70s for a few. A little cooler i think over by the coast today as the breeze kind of turns a little more westerly. Clouds roll in tonight into saturday. We get a break sunday and monday. Increasing clouds tuesday. Still looks good for rain on wednesday. Bring it. Thank you, steve. You got it. Preventing grid lock in the south bay. What the city of fremont is doing to prevent drivers from getting off the freeway and clogging city streets in hopes of saving time. Im proud to be an american where at least i know im free but i wont forget the men who died who gave that life to me and i gladly stand up welcome back. This is god bless the usa. This came in on our Facebook Page. Ruth writes my 87yearold father is a korean war vet. He suffers from dementia but still loves music. And on this veterans day, you can go to National Parks and forests for free. Fees are waived today at parks including yosemite, joshua tree and death valley. It usually costs 30 to enter the parks per car. It is a way to get america into the outdoors on a day that we honor those who have fought for our country. National chains are also saying thank you with freebies and deals on food and drinks. They include ihop which is offering its red white and blue pancakes for free. Little caesars, applebees and red lobster. Fremont city leaders are trying something new to prevent grid lock on the city streets. It is working with waze and google maps to try to ease congestion. Signs are now posted telling drivers they will no longer be able to make turns near mission boulevard. They hope that will stop freeway drivers from cutting through surface streets into neighborhoods. That is actually a good idea. The commuters should stick to the freeway so that people who live in this area are able to get where they need to go in case of any emergencies. The turn restrictions go into effect on monday. Get ready for traffic delays in downtown San Francisco because major changes are coming to van ness avenue. Many leftturn lanes will be permanently removed. The number of traffic lanes will be reduced from three to two. The overnight work will continue until the end of the year. The reconstruction of van ness will have bus only lanes going down the street. Mammoth mountain opened lifts yesterday. Making it the first resort to open in the west. The resort says the snow is good so far and more is on the way next week. Here in Northern California the first tahoe area resorts are expected to open sometime next week. You will want to look upward late sunday night and into early monday morning. It will be the closest the moon passes earth in nearly 70 years. Scientists call it a super moon because it looks much bigger and brighter than normal. The next time a full moon comes this close to year will be in the year 2034. Apple ceo tim cook is speaking out about donald trump being elected as president and telling everyone to move forward. Tim cook wrote a letter to his staff and saying the only way to move forward is move forward together. Things were not friendly on the campaign trail. Trump said apple should move the production to the u. S. And suggested stronger surveillance. Mark zuckerberg says dont blame facebook for trump winning the election. Many people fade up their minds on false reports that went viral before the election. He will be speaking for the last time as president on veterans day. We take you live to Arlington National cemetery where we expect the president to speak at any moment as he continues to honor veterans this morning. Plus a number of businesses in downtown oakland cleaning up this morning after being vandalized during a Third Straight night of antitrump protests. We will tell you about the arrests made during the demonstration. We do have breaking news in San Francisco that were just about to talk about. I do want to also talk about some of the traffic this morning that has been lighter than usual. If youre looking to get a commute into the city, you will not see big crowds on that bay bridge. Unless theres thick fog on your morning drive or what have you, there are no weather issues. A system coming in late tonight and tomorrow. But not much for your weekend forecast. More on that coming up. 8 28. Following breaking news coming from San Francisco because theres a hazmat situation at a recycling center in city. The map shows you where it is happening on cargo way east of 280. Firefighters say a red alert has been issued. A number of ambulances are being sent to the scene and there may be multiple victims. A source telling us that drivers are being turned away from the center and that some of them have been sickened by unknown material. These are pictures from the scene shared to us by firefighters. According to firefighters, the Hazardous Material has actually been isolated and there is no shelter in place for people nearby that facility. We have a crew on the way to the scene. We will bring you any updates as they become available. With that, welcome back to mornings on 2. Im mike mibach. Im gasia mikaelian. If you are going to work and school, steve, many people have the veterans day off. Yeah. We saw the bay bridge earlier, we couldnt believe it. It was empty. Nobody there. We have a quiet pattern here. Very hazy skies and a lot of fog drifting around. Temperatures in the 70s for much. A slight cooldown over by the coast today after an extremely warm week. Some 70s down by santa cruz but not the 80s. The system has a ways to go. It wont arrive until later tonight. That along with the fog and breeze for most. Not giving us any sunshine for a while. A mix of clouds and sun. It is warming up quick. Low 60s mountain view. 62 napa. It is quick here. It didnt take long. 60 also some areas on the peninsula from belmont to los altos hills. We will see a little bit of a cooldown on saturday with clouds and very light rain to the north. Today, hazy, 60s and 70s. Sal, you have an issue that you want to get to. We have that situation in San Francisco. Right. We found out that it is not affecting the freeway traffic. We have a crew on the way. It is a Hazardous Material situation at the recycling center on cargo way. We will let you know. I will let you know that traffic wise you can continue to use 280 extension past the scene with no major issues. In fact traffic is light on this veterans day at the bay bridge. This is certainly not typical coming into San Francisco. You should have no trouble and very little delay as you pay the money or use your fast track to get past the scene of the toll plaza. Lets talk about the San Francisco commute. Slowing on 101. 280 is not affected. What is going on pier96. It looks good. A little built of trough bit of traffic but it is better than usual. In oakland, the fbi is assisting Oakland Police in a triple Homicide Investigation. The shooting happened early this morning near san leandro street and 2nd avenue. A source tells ktvu news that one victim was found inside the home and smoke coming from a nearby garage. Fire crews found two more victims. At this point one person is being held in connection with this case. Protesters marched through the streets of oakland to voice their anger about president elect trump. Alex savidge joining us live this morning from oakland with more on the arrests made by police. Alex, you have a closer look at the damage done to the businesses. Reporter yeah. Hey, it is a frustrating situation, mike, obviously for a lot of local Business Owners in oakland. A lot of Business Owners are trying to show that they stand in solidarity with the protesters. To that end, you can see the sign that is up in the miranda bar. It says clearly not my president. And this is just one of many similar signs that we have seen throughout oakland here as protests do continue. A lot of Business Owners worried about more destruction with more protests expected to take place. The windows smashed up at the nearby audi dealership. One car inside also was vandalized. There was also damage that was done nearby at the Mercedes Benz dealership as well. We also stopped by the Mexican Restaurant on broadway where the front windows were smashed for a second time. Authorities say things really got out of hand last night when a small group broke away from the much larger antitrump demonstration. People in oakland are frustrated at all of the damage left behind from last nights protests. I just dont understand why destroying our city is going to make anything better. Im upset. I get that there are people who think that donald trump is going to fix our problems. I dont think he is. I think we live in a bubble. But this isnt going to fix anything. Reporter and here you see the night began with very peaceful demonstration. It began at the plaza and obviously everybody there trying to show their opposition to trumps victory in the president ial election. There were about a thousand people who marched through downtown oakland. Many people are fearful of what a Trump Administration will mean for this country. Then it turned more violent and more destructive later in the night. According to the police, about 100 protesters at one point got on to 580, on to the freeway near telegraph avenue and blocked the freeway for a short time. In the end, Police Arrested 11 people and citing 7 others for a variety of charges, assault on Police Officers, vandalism among the charges. Those protesters are now facing. A lot of cleanup to do around downtown oakland. You see messages from Business Owners showing that they stand in solidarity and support the protesters. They just dont want their businesses vandalized. Alex, it is a holiday and 8 30 in the morning. Are any of the businesses going to remain closed over the weekend or open up the doors and invite everybody back in . Reporter its sort of hard to tell. It is early down here. A lot of these places you know, the bars and a lot of the restaurants, this is a little earlier than they would open up anyway. So its really hard to get a sense. I dont think theres any of these Business Owner whos are going to shut their doors and not open up. Theyre here. Theyre part of this community. And, you know, i think they will continue doing what they do and just hope that they are not the target of all of the anger and the destruction that we have seen the last few nights. Thank you, alex. Students from across the bay area skipped school to also protest against donald trump. Nst donald trump. We reject our president elect. This was the scene in San Francisco about 2,000 students from at least ten different high schools walked out of class and took to the streets. They marched through several city neighborhood. And San Francisco police say the protests were noisy but peace. A protest went violent when two teachers were involved in a fight with a student. It was caught on this cell phone video. A teacher and student can be seen fighting in the hallway while another teacher tried to break up the fight. This happened when about 100 students protesting from other area schools came on to the College Park Campus to try to recruit other students. Happening now, a veterans day ceremony at Arlington National cemetery. President obama is there as we showed you live about half an hour ago. The president took part in a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknowns. We do expect president obama seated on the left of this picture to speak any time now. Of course this will be president obamas last time marking veterans day while in office serving as commander in chief. What we see here is robert mcdonnell, Veterans Affairs secretary speaking. Lets take a moment to listen in. A sense of duty. Courage. And plain american grit. President obama admires that in corey. He admires it in all American Veterans. Its why he loves them. Ladies and gentlemen, our honored guest, the commander in chief and the 44th president of the United States, barack obama. [applause] [cheering and applause] thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Ank you. [cheering and applause] thank you very much. Thank you so much. [cheering and applause] thank you. Thank you very much. Please. Thank you. Thank you. Please. Thank you. Secretary mcdonnell, mr. Hamilton, distinguished guests and most of allor extraordinary veterans and your families, the last time that i stood on these hollowed grounds on memorial day, our country came together to honor those who have fought and died for our flag. A few days before, our nation observed armed forces day. Honoring all who are serving under that flag at this moment. And today, on veterans day, we honor those who honored our country with its highest form of service. You who once wore the uniform of our army, navy, air force, marines, or coast guard. We owe you our thanks. We owe you our respect. And we owe you our freedom. We come together to express our profound gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions that you and your family made on the battlefield, at home, and at outposts around the world. But americas gratitude to our veterans is something always grounded in something greater than what you did on duty. Its also an appreciation of the example that you continue to set after your service has ended. Your example as citizens. Veterans day often follows a hard fought political campaign. An exercise in the free speech and Self Government that you fought for. It often lays disagreements across the nation. But the american instinct has never to find opposition in opposite corners. It is to find strength in our common creed. To forge unity from our great diversity. To sustain that strength and unity even when it is hard. And when the election is over, as we search for ways to come together, to reconnect with one another, and with the principles that are more enduring that transtory politics some of the best examples are the men and women we celebrate on veterans day. Our 9 11 generation, the First Responders who ran into smoldering towers, then ran to a recruiting center and signed up to serve. The example of a military that meets every mission, one united team all looking out for one another, all getting each other backs. It is the example of the single most diverse institution in our country. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen who represent every corner of our country, every shade of humanity. Immigrant and native born. Christian, muslim, jew and nonbeliever alike all forged in the common service. Its the example of our veterans. Patriots who when they took off their fatigues put back on the cam flanneling of every day life in america and become our Business Partners and bosses, our teachers and our coaches, our First Responders, city council members, community leaders, role models. All still serving this country we love with the same sense of duty and valor. President obama speaking at Arlington National cemetery on this veterans day saying we honor those who honor our country. We owe your thanks, respect and owe you our freedom. Veterans are being honored all over the bay area as well. They are paying tribute to military heroes and working on those struggling. Janine de la vega is joining us live in san jose to tell us what is happening there. Reporter we are here at a nonprofit. It is called open doors. They are doing a number of things to make veterans feel appreciated today. The boy scouts are giving out these bracelets that they made. You can see the adventure scouts. These young people are making thank you cards and writing them out to the veterans here. They are about to serve a hot breakfast to veterans who have showed up today. We spoke with one of them. Here is what he had to say. You want closure. You want to be appreciated. It is very important. It makes people feel good. It is good therapy too. A lot of guys come back with a lot of you know, a lot of mental problems and a lot of issues. It is events like this that just, you know, uplift a person. Reporter a campaign started here in Santa Clara County a year ago to find housing for 700 Homeless Veterans by 2018. A bunch of nonprofits and landlord and complex managers were recruited to help provide Affordable Housing and services. Over the last year, 510 of the 700 Homeless Veterans are now in permanent housing as a result of the campaign. County and city leaders will be talking about that accomplishment in downtown san jose. There will be a veterans day certificate moany and a parade kicks off ceremony and parade kicks off at noon. You can check out all of the events on ktvu. Com. Back to you. Thank you. We will help you get out the door. A lot of people, sal. Im stun that stunned that the bay bridge toll plaza was as empty as it was. Yeah. A few people have to work. Were all at work. Some people dont. A lot of government offices are closed. And today the traffic is light. So if you have your business to take care of in San Francisco, assuming theyre open, you can go ahead and go. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza and start there. You can see the traffic is moving along pretty well. We can see traffic is light here. No problems on the bridge itself. Getting into the city. Also want to mention the traffic is going to be light on interstate 880 in front of the oakland coliseum. This is very unusual, even for a friday for this commute to be completely wide open. When there is a crash, there is a backup. If there are no crashes, we see light traffic. San francisco a little bit of slowing on 101 approaching Caesar Chavez but not much. It is not having any impact on interstate 280 northbound to the 280 extension. 8 45. Lets go to steve and todays weather. Thank you, sal. A lot of hazy skies out there. Plenty of fog for a while. It looks like a lot has lifted. There was thick fog for a bit. Over the bay, high clouds as well. Partly sunny skies. The end result will be mostly sunny. Temperatures still mild to warm here. Slightly cooler. Running about one to two degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Some fog has made it down to the islands, parts of the coast. Thats a sign of things to come. Also inland. So it is still warm but not as warm as wednesday and thursday. These higher clouds will thin out. Then we will wait for this system. It wont get here until later this afternoon and into the evening. This band is easing up a little bit. A little fog underneath that as well. Subtle changes. But on the north coast, starting off under mostly cloudy skies. The breeze is turning a little more westerly or southerly. Still inland it is an off shore breeze. As long as that is place, there will be warm temperatures. A lot of 60s in novato and berkeley. 62 at sfo. Most locations have bounced off the morning lows quick. Still pockets of fog. 40s for the Santa Cruz Mountains to mid to upper 60s. Santa cruz is already 65. Soquel 61. So they will be warm again. Maybe not near 80 but probably 75, 76. Tomorrow we will cloud it up with the system coming in late tonight.
