These are the new signs. 80 are being activated along the 20mile stretch between the carquinez bridge and the bay bridge. Now, you probably insided they are dark right now. They will only light up if there is a crash or if the lanes are blocked for some reason. So keep that in mind. This is how this will work. The signs will show green arrows up above a lane if everything is clear. Theyll show a yellow x if traffic is slow ahead, and then you will see a red x if the lane is blocked immediately in front of you. That means its time to pull over to another lane. A caltrans spokeswoman said its to give drivers an opportunity to change lanes and hopefully ease congestion. We are hoping to allow for emergency responders, one, to reach the scenes of accidents faster. We are also hoping to avoid what are known as secondary collisions. Those are the collisions that happen at the back of a long cue of traffic that is stopped because there has been something blocking a lane ahead. Reporter and caltrans says on average there are about 25 crashes a week along this stretch of interstate 80, and roughly half of those crashes are secondary accidents that happen as a result of a sudden slowdown because of an initial crash. These new signs will officially activate today starting a half hour from now, dave, at 8 00 this morning. Again, one point that caltrans wants to get across is you will see the signs. Once they are activated, the signs will be dark unless there is a crack up ahead. Keep that in mind. All right. Thank you. Time is 7 36. The worlds first Driverless Cars hit the streets of singapore. They may soon pick up groceries ordered through amazon. Pam cook with this mornings money business. Pam. A lot of interesting news. I want to start by talking about the stock of mylan. The company that makes the epipen. We have been talking about that. That stock took a big hit on all of the controversy and the complaining about how expensive it is. The stock though, when the ceo announcing that they are going to work on reducing the cost, the stock is up a little bit. But it is a publicly traded company to keep an eye on. The numbers, just to give you a brief, s p 500, dow and nasdaq all down just a tiny little bit today. You would be able to shop online and grab your groceries on your way home. The Silicon Valley Business Journal says planning documents indicate that possible locations for the first of these click and collect spots might be san carlos, sunnyvale, and amazons hometown of seattle. Amazon is staying quiet about any speculation on this. But it already has amazon fresh, which offers full Service Grocery delivery in seattle, california, and new york, and its prime now, which is a limited Delivery Service for 25 markets in the country. The worlds first self driving taxis are going to begin picking up passengers in singapore. They are operated by a massachusetts company, but the company says one of the reasons it selected singapore for the first test is because drivers there tend to obey traffic rules, which makes the operation of selfdriving taxis easier, safer. The cars have a driver in the front seat who is prepared to take over if necessary during the testing time. Passengers have to have an invitation from the company to use the service at this point. Then they order it on an app. We understand uber will begin offering rides Autonomous Cars in pittsburgh, pennsylvania, in a few weeks, dave. Wow. Near your hometown of philly. Would you do it . Its jetsons feeling to me. I definitely want to wait and see what happens. Very interesting. All right. Thank you. All right. Time now to check in with mike and gasia. Aftershocks in italy. The search is underway for survivors while the death toll in the devastating earthquake is on the rise. Responding to the backlash re reported yesterday. The actions the maker of the epipen is taking after coming under attack for the massive price hike. We are looking at very slow traffic that is beginning to get a little bit better in the east bay. A live look at highway 24. Its moderate on the way to oakland. Nothing moderate about the fog bank. Its big, large, and in charge. It looks like the cooler pattern starts tomorrow inland. More on that coming up. Good morning. We are live in oakland where some time later today executives with the oakland as and officials with the port of oakland are expected to tour a site that could be the future home. Team. The mayors reaction coming up. There will be more chances to shop while you wait for a train at bart. We will tell you about the plan to put more retailers at stations. This is ktvu mornings on 2. [ music playing ]. And the marine layer is in as we take a look out at the oakland estuary there. A little bit of a dark start to this day. Doesnt mean we cant have a great day. And it is a great day on this thursday morning, august 25th. Welcome back to mornings on 2, everyone. I am mike mibach. I am gasia mikaelian. Weather all week has been a little up, a little down. Steve paulson is here to talk to us about the next big change on the horizon. That would be tomorrow for inland areas. Not much change today, mike and gasia. It stays cool to cold for some on the coast. 60s there. Just a really solid fog bank. Its making a good push inland already. Some of these locations inland have been in the 80s, but right about where they should be for this time of year. A little cooler inland. More of a fog bank tomorrow. Weak system drops down. That will enhance and carry into saturday. Maybe a little warmer on sunday. Fog up and down the coast. Decent delta breeze. Not crazy, but gusting to 25. Thats in place. The fogs in place. 50s, 60s on the temps. Cooler to the north bay. Quiet up in the sierra after a couple of days of big boomers there. The fog is quiet in its own way, but its very, very enhanced and its going to get a jump start from that system starting tomorrow. Inland temps should cool down after today. Today 60s, 70s, 80s, low 90s. All right. Sal, east bay . Well, the peninsula. We are going to start in the east bay, steve. The peninsula also is bad now. We have a motorcycle accident. Let me turn these radios down real quick here. All right. Lets take a look at the east bay commute. Westbound 580 near coolidge there is a motorcycle accident that has been reported. This is just past high street here. 580 at coolidge after highway 13, and the traffic is backed up from Castro Valley. So 580 used to be that freeway that you would take to avoid 880. 880 is bad, but 580 is no help because of the crash, and every day we have slow traffic there. On the peninsula southbound 101 at marsh we have an injury accident there, and unfortunately this sounds like a major injury accident. And you know what . I have noticed a spike in motorcycle crashes in the last week or so. I am not sure what that is, but if you drive a car, look out for motorcyclists. I dont have to tell you, if you drive your bike, be careful out there, please. Lets go out and take a look at 280 in san jose. The traffic in the south bay has been normal. Slow traffic at 17 on 85 and on 101 getting up to the west valley. Its more like a normal commute. Bay bridge toll plaza is improving a little bit. Its about a 15 to 20minute delay at the pay gates. 8 03. Later today executives with the oakland as and officials with the port of oakland are expected to tour a site that could be the future home of the oakland as. You heard about this tour during mornings on 2 yesterday. The proposed site right there at Howard Terminal on the estuary about a half mile from jack london square, thats where we find ktvus brian flores with more on the story and how the mayor of the city is reacting to all of this. Brian. Reporter yeah, you know, when we spoke with the mayor she sounded pretty encouraged when she spoke with gasia yesterday on mornings on 2. She also said that, yeah, executives with the oakland as and officials with the port of oakland are going to be touring this site behind me. We were talking about the charles p. Howard cargo terminal along the port of Oakland North of jack london square. I want to show you what this may look like as we go to video. This is an artists rendering. It shows two pairs of cargo cranes there framing the water side venue. The ballpark alongside the water there looks beautiful. Is reminds a lot of people of at t park in San Francisco. From what we understand whats happening today, according to mayor schaff, is that these officials will do what she says is a technical tour of the Howard Terminal. Mostly it will be engineers. Now, it may not sound too exciting, but the mayor said on mornings on 2 it shows the seriousness of the as building a stadium here in oakland. She also said that this is a site that she considers would be good for the team. She also said to fans they should not get too excited because this is obviously very preliminary. We heard from as faithful as well as the port of oakland. There have been numerous expressions of interest in the Howard Terminal. Right now its used for maritimerelated purposes such as drainage truck parking, and the port will listen to any appropriate use that makes financial sense. I think they need a new park because there is not enough people coming to the games. If they put something nice out on the water like the giants. Reporter some of the pluses on the project include the site that can handle direct ferry access. Some of the minuses include quite its quite a bit of a hike from the nearest bart station. Right now there is no direct freeway access. Back out here live, the other issue is infrastructure. There is a train track that goes right through here, charles p. Howard terminal. What are the trains going to do . Build perhaps an underground track so the trains can go through and traffic can go through, as well. Again, as the amtrak train passes through, this is going to be a technical tour, according to the mayor. We dont know exactly what time its taking place. Its unclear who from the oakland as are going to be here. We understand the majority owner will be here. We will be here to see what happens later on this morning. Back to you. All right. Thanks, brian. Now to the devastating earthquake in italy. New images of the destruction caused by the magnitude 6. 2 quake. This is a small village now turned into a ghost town. Its less than a mile from the epicenter of that quake. The hardest hit places are providing very difficult access. The small towns have old roads which were heavily damaged by the quake making it difficult for search crews to reach the areas. We were sound asleep. We heard a horrifying sound. The bed started to shake and the doors and cabinets opened and started to shake as well. A drone flew over one of the devastated communities and recorded these images of the damage. Scientists in rome are monitoring the aftershocks. There have been about 500 of them since yesterday. Now check out some of this video of Traffic Cameras in italy capturing the moments as that earthquake hit. The ground rattling causing the cameras to shake violently. This earthquake is shaping up to be italys deadliest quake since 2009 when more than 300 people were killed. The epicenter of that quake was just about 90 miles south of yesterdays quake. In Southeast Asia, an earthquake rocked myanmar. It killed at least four people. It damaged close to 200 buddhist temps and pagodas. They have increased prices three times a year over the last nine years. A two pack is 600. People with severe allergies can use it to prevent a fatal reaction. The company that has partnered with bart is saying lets offer more. Trans smart is that company i am talking about that has hooked up with bart. They held an open house letting Small Business owners know that they can have an opportunity to sell to bart commuters. They showed off artists renderings of what the retail space would look like. The company is looking to attract around 50 retailers to bart. It wants to give riders more variety. We asked people what theyd like to see. A coffee shop or somewhere where you could get breakfast or, you know, even though you cant eat on the trains. I mean, if you are getting off the bart and you have somewhere else to go, you dont have to go to, like, somewhere else, you know. Food. Headache medicines. Snacks. Everyday stuff that people forget, kind of need. Cleanliness things. Deodorant, stuff like that, to be honest. Reporter trans mart plans to launch an expansion in San Francisco and oakland first. The company would see how they do and decide which of the 43 bart stations should have retailers next. The length of the lease is one to seven years and rent can run from 1,000 to 4,000 a month just depending on which station the store is located at and how large that retail space is. Back to you. How young is too young for your children to be left at home . One mother in maryland found out the hard way when she was arrested for leaving her 8 and 9yearold children alone at a Vacation Rental for about 45 minutes while she went out to get food. Police were called by a neighbor who saw the children run outside after their dog. When the mom returned she was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor accounts of endangering her children. We checked into this and there is no federal law that determines what age children can legally be left at home alone. Each state sets their other standards. In california there is no set age but social workers ask that you determine the maturity of your child and they advise of leaving anyone under the age of 7 home alone. Today our question of the day is this. Should that mother have been arrested for leaving her 8 and 9yearolds alone . At what age do you think its okay to leave your Children Home alone . A robust discussion happening on the ktvu Facebook Page right now. Led there and post a comment. You can also tweet us using the hashtag ktvu. Look forward to the responses. Lets go to steve with todays weather. Thank you, sir. Just an absolutely massive fog bank. If you are stuck in that fog, its cold. I have had a lot of people tell me, i got the heater going. Havent seen the sun in a couple of days. This includes parts of the mendocino coast. The fog bank has not budged that much at all. Only subtle changes. We get a westerly breeze or an onshore breeze, you need that east or northeast to wipe it out. Usually, september we start to see that. No sign of it yet. West, southwest, west. Gives to 25 at travis. No problem with the delta breeze. 50s and low 60s. Everyones really close. San jose actually running a little warmer than brentwood. But 10 degrees cooler in novato. 51. Upper 50s. Usually by this hour, we are warming up. Mid 50s. Low 50s for some. Falllike feel to some of the lows. 32 truckee. 42 arcata. 55 ukiah. Big thunderstorms were popping up earlier this week. Now everything has moved off to the east and south. Quiet up in the sierra. For us the fogs not going anywhere. Its going to get enhanced. A couple of lows begin to drop into the picture. One out here is not a problem yet, but this section coming down will give, i think, a lot of local drizzle to the coast and bay. Its possible they could merge together here towards maybe early next week. Keep an eye on that. Hints of a big pattern change in the mix for early september. 60s, 70s, 80s to still some 90s. A lot of 70s. Benicia. These where they should be this time of year. Temperatures inland still in the 80s. Even if you get the fog. Kind of amazing that we get some 80s, upper 80s. It looks cooler for those inland areas starting tomorrow. Not much change for the coast and bay. They are just absolutely stuck in this pattern. But inland temps look like they will come down a few degrees friday into saturday, gasia and mike. Thank you. Astronomers say they hit the jackpot. For us fog and low clouds equals 60s, 70s, 80s. Areas of low pressure want to move in starting more so tomorrow. Sal, what do you have, sir . Peninsula . You want to go there first . We are starting in the east bay. We are going to get to the peninsula because that is almost a mess. Westbound interstate 80, 37 minute drive. There was a crash in between all this. Really, the volume of traffic has spiked up. A lot of colleges did go back to school yesterday. More people on the road. Here we are with a lot of slow traffic. 37minute drive time from the carquinez to the macarthur maze. When you get to the bay bridge, things are improving. Still about a 20minute delay before you make it onto the bridge. I just want to continue with the east bay commute here. It has been terrible on 580 out of Castro Valley and on 880 north and southbound from 238. Steve mentioned the peninsula, and we are going to talk about it. A crash has been moved to the side southbound 101 at marsh. 280 is better, although 280 is getting a backup. Id say 280 is your choice to get into the valley that way. As we move down to the actual valley, 85, 280 and 101 are heavy. We are in the fall commute, it seems, already as schools are back and a lot of peoples summer vacations seem to be over. 8 31. Back to the desk. If your commute takes you on eastshore freeway you will notice new electronic signs that are meant to reduce congestion there. Alex savidge has been driving around all morning on 80 and you are here to explain how these signs should work. Reporter this is part of the smart corridor project. These signs are meant to give drivers a heads up if there is an issue in front of them. Let me give you a live look from the gopro camera on the front of our live truck. These are the freeway signs. There are more than 80 signs being activated starting today on a 20mile stretch between the carquinez bridge and bay bridge. You notice the signs are dark right now. They will only light up when there is a crash or some sort of incident blocking lanes ahead. Let me show you what the signs will look like once they light up. They will show green arrows above lanes that are clear ahead. Theyll show a yellow x if the traffic may be slowing down in front of you in that particular lane. Then you will see a red x if the lane is blocked coming up right in front of you. And i spoke with a caltrans representative this morning who says the idea here, obviously, is to give drivers some time to change lanes and then they ultimately are hoping they can ease congestion overall. The goal is, one, to reduce collisions for the very sake of enhancing safety for the motoring public, but also for bringing some Congestion Relief because secondary collisions just add to the domino effect of traffic backups when you do start having problems on the interstate. Reporter and caltrans tells me there are, on average, about 25 crashes a week along this particular stretch of interstate 80, and roughly half of those crashes are those so called secondary crashes. The accidents that happen as a result of the slowdown because of an original crash. People slow down, and you know what happens. You have that domino effect. So the people have an awareness of whats coming up ahead of them. You can see you have a live look, another set of these freeway signs. Again there are about 83 of these. There are exactly 83 of these signs between the carquinez bridge and the bay bridge. They just ticked on at 8 00 this morning. They are activated. Gasia, the important thing to keep in mind is they are not going to light up unless there is actually a crash or an incident of some kind up ahead. Important to keep that in mind. If they are dark, smooth sailing. A woman suffered a broken nose after San Francisco police say she was attacked by a man at random. We want to warn you.
