Yesterday, the smoke was so thick that calfire crews could not mount any sort of a significant air attack. That was a major problem. They were only able to make a few drops from the air on the fire. That allowed it to spread even more rapidly. Im told by a ba tal yun chief. There are about 6,000 or so homes that were in the path of that fire that battalion chief. Any individuals doing that . Reporter you know, we havent seen any of that from this morning. But we saw that over the weekend. Theres rain not too far away. Middletown, Hidden Valley lake, kelseyville, cobb. The fire just from saturday at 3 00 until 6 00 from 400 acres to 10,000. You know, you wont see that very off if ever. Incredible because that strong southeast wind. We had hot conditions. We do have rain to the north. Fort bragg up to leightonville getting rain. Cloud cover is there. Temperatures will be down. Your monday forecast does call for a big drop on the temps. A lot of cloud cover, humidity will be up and maybe some light rain. We lose that southeast breeze. Well get more of a westerly breeze with a lot of cloud cover. 50s and 60s on the temps. Southwest, westsouthwest, 25, gusts to 30. Thats finally the key. Once that develops, then we start our cooling trend. It will be today. Two systems, the low which is offshore tapped into the moisture over the weekend, tropical moisture getting some enhancement here south toward monterey, also enhancing the clouds. The system is coming in. Were in the warm sector. Were getting lift that may generate not only the low clouds and the high clouds but light precip. Could help the butte fire. We do have good news. Low and high clouds. Much cooler inland. Possibility of some light shower activity. 60s and also 70s on the temps. Falling off the table compared to the 90s we had yesterday. Well have more on the system. Here is sal with an update on the traffic. It has not been a good commute at all in the east bay. Had a couple of bad commutes, including 80. Well start there and take a look at 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. Its taking 45 minutes to drive that stretch. Remember, it usually takes less than 20 minutes to drive that when things are doing well. This is due to an earlier crash that happened on 80 in richmond. Its now gone. At the bay bridge, you will be waiting for another 30 minutes to get to the metering lights. I do believe we have a look at that. You can see how slow it is except in the carpool lanes. Its slow all over the east bay. Highway 4 is sold out. I think a lot of people are avoiding going over to 580. 680 is very slow. But 580 is backed up from some earlier issues. Its backed up solid from tracy to dublin. We had an accident earlier that made that a mess. 880 is slow is slow. One more thing we want to look at here. I think were done here, actually. 7 11. One of the lines that will benefit is the passenger baypoint to sfo line. They will have ten cars. B. A. R. T. Will keep the trains running for an additional 15 minutes during the weekday mornings to accommodate riders leaving later in the morning. Riders traveling to daly city will benefit from that extended service in the morning. We spoke to one woman who commutes from fremont to San Francisco who is looking forward to less congestion. I leave early enough in the morning that i can always get a seat. But it seems to get more busier each time. I go into the city. So by the time you get to bayfair, theres no more seats. We have been showing uth devastation from the you the devastation from the valley fire now to the butte fire in calaveras and amador counties. Our reporter is live in calaveras this morning with the latest on the firefight there. Mike . Reporter good morning. Good to hear from you. Right now were live along mountainhouse road, white between san andreas and Mountain Ranch road. You can see a fire crew at this home, been standing by just as weve watched flareups. Take a look at some of the video we shot about 100 yards down the road from where we are. And this is the good news the good news, while theres still fire burning, its much less intense than it has been over the last several days on the butte fire in am ma door and amador and calaveras counties. Theyve made Good Progress on the fire due to light winds and higher humidities and they expect the smoke to clear. Those are all good signs as containment has been bumped up 30 . This is a fire thats burned 200 homes and structures as we come back out here live, i do want to point out the smoke. Smoke has been an issue throughout this entire fire. Its making me hoarse this morning. You will notice the clouds. While that normally wouldnt be a big deal, it means the smoke is lifting. Visibility is Getting Better and crews say they are expecting the smoke to continue to lift here so much so it will allow them to get aircraft back on this fire to fight it from the air. So a lot of good headlines. The one big bad headline, its what potential the future nay bring because the weather may bring because the weather system is moving its way into california. Crews are concerned about what if any winds will be associated with that front and what those winds will mean on this fire. So while there are a lot of positive headlines, theres still some concern, schools will remain closed in amador county. But calfire says the priority is hopefully to get more people back into their homes today if the progress continues once they get aerial attack back on the fire. Back to you. Thank you. Were certainly seeing and smelling the smoke in the bay area. We sure are. Sal is seeing all kinds of stuff on the roads thisnd on this monday morning. We wanted it to be an easy commute. We have a lot of slow traffic. Well start in san jose in the south bay. Look at 280 northbound getting up to highway 17. Just a reminder tonight is a football game, the 49ers and the vikings monday night football at levi stadium in santa clara. Thats gonna yesterday extra pressure to the south bay commute. The game kicksoff at 7 20. That will mix in with the afternoon commute. Lets take a look at the east bay where 580 is has been very slow. We had an earlier accident at the dublin interchange. Thats gone. Its slow from tracy to dublin. From dublin on 680 down the sunol grade and 880 not much better. Its slow from stevenson in fremont. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza. Traffic is backed up there as you drive through. Its backed up for a big delay. I almost forgot to tell you about something important on the peninsula. That would be 101 trying to get to the airport. It has been very, very slow getting up from san mateo up to the airport and thats because of a couple of earlier issues. If you dont need to be on 101, 280 is a much better bet. Back to steve. All right. Thank you. We have a big change on the weather pattern. Its long overdue. Lets take it. We need it. Not only the cloud cover but light rain. Some of that rain is making it farther south than just Mendocino County. But a line from fort bragg and there have been reports of that lighter than that south. I think the cloud cover and light rain will make it into lake county. Look at the cloud cover. Its ramping up here. We are finally getting a change, two systems impacting the area. Its all gonna spell a cooler, breezy, windy forecast. Temperatures will drop 25 degrees, not only up inlake county in lake county. The wind will be there. The air quality will be better as well as we get a westerly breeze here. It will lift some of that air qauty quality, take some of the smoke out. Temperatures will be much, much cooler. Finally the delta breeze. Its been gone for a lock. Its kicked up for a long time its been gone for a week. Its kicked up. This is getting some lift. Near monterey bay, Santa Cruz Mountains. They are starting to get light rain there. To the north, we have a cold front, it will take the low and push it across. Thats increasing the cloud cover. Low and high clouds. Cooler, windy. Some rain here. Cloudy, showers, rain to the north and some scattered showers around here. 60s and 70s on your temps. The temperatures have come way down. Cloudy to mostly cloudy but i think breezy to windy for the 49ers game. I think you will notice a big change in the temperatures. Thats the key there and the breeze kicking up. A much stronger system arrives wednesday night into thursday. That one looks even better for rain. Thank you. Finally. Yeah. All right, steve. Thank you. A man and his grandson strooded by flood stranded by floodwaters in texas. I got your hand. The amazing rescue captured on an officers body camera. And in kentucky, a state trooper shot and killed. With less than two weeks to go, were now learning theres already been one threat. Fire crews have made some progress combating the valley fire. This morning well take a look at the fires destructive math and some of the path and some of the structures and animals that survived. Good morning. This morning commute is not doing we vell at all very well at all. We see a lot of slow traffic all over the east bay, including highway 24. Big change in the weather. Not openly cooler and breezy. We have rain to the north but also up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, things are change, well show you where. Its sad all of the memories are gone. Lost everything. Shock and grief, hundreds of people forced from their homes by the valley fire. We have new numbers this morning. We now know at least 61,000 acres have burned and the fire is 5 contained. Now, lets go to live pictures from middletown. A burnedout truck. Homes, just completely wiped out. This is the scene in so many neighborhoods this morning. Allie rasmus will have more on the devastation and how people are trying to cope. It is now 7 30. Good morning, again. Im gasia mikaelian. Good morning. Im dave clark. Lets talk about weather and traffic. I just ducked outside. Its gray outside our door. Looks like all over. It will be cooler and cloudy. Theres rain toward the Santa Cruz Mountains. Two systems. The cold front to the north. Out ahead to that the warm sector getting a little bit of lift. Thats producing light rain, from winder north, up to the Mendocino County. It looks like light rain might make it in. You can see some toward clover dale. The low is offshore. Look at the enhancement. This has produced light rain at the summit highway 17. Were getting reports of that, some rain. So two systems, the combination will griv us a cloudy it mostly cloudy will give us a cloudy to mostly cloudy day. You are getting some lift. A little bit of dynamics there and then the cold front to the north. These two are gonna give us a huge change today. Its in the form of mostly cloudy, cloudy conditions. Rain for some. Much cooler inland. A good 20, 25degree drop. 60s and 70s. In case you didnt hear me, sal, theres rain on the summit at highway 17. Wow. Well, thats gonna make traffic worse there. Its already been slow in the area. All over the east bay. Traffic has been terrible. We keep having accidents in key areas. We had an accident on 580 a couple of them. We have a lot of slow traffic. You can see traffic is going to be busy as you drive through to the toll plaza metering lights. Its about a 40minute delay. Its very slow getting onto the bridge. Also moving along and taking a look at some of these commutes, 880 is just moderate past the oakland coliseum. No problems heading south as you head to highway 92. I want to mention the east bay commute, 680 and highway 4 are very slow. Theres no light traffic. Theres a new accident westbound 80 reported here, westbound 80 as you come up toward highway 4. There is a new motorcycle accident, traffic is going to be very slow in the area. Its already slow even after that heading down to the macarthur maze. Westbound 580 to add insult to injury, we had a crash pulled to the shoulder. But we had a much earlier crash that messed things up. 880 is slow. 101 from burlington to san mateo, its all messed up northbound because of earlier issues. A quick look at the commute in the south bay, you will see the traffic is going to be busy. Back to the desk. All right, sal. Thank you. Our focus this morning, the fires. Thats what were talking about, fire crews are starting to get a line around that very destructive wildfire burning in lake county. The valley fire 5 contained. Allie rasmus live in middletown where the monster fire has left a lot of people homeless. Youve been telling us stories. Reporter thats right. Were in the outskirts of middletown. So this is right near drier creek. You can see dry creek. Thats the path that the valley fire traveled. Both sides are sort of burnt up. On either side of it, there is a house over there that survived. On this side of the creek there is a mobile home that survived the fire. However, the owner says that a that a couple of cars got burned up. You can see the path the car traveled. The nearest cross street is 175. At some point, the fire jumped out of the creek bed and it unfortunately consumed the house that was right here. This is the the address is 2967 on saint Stevens Court near napa avenue. So some its very erratic and almost arbitrary, the way this fire jumped and spread from house to house, you know, sparing a house across the street, yet contombing the consuming some of the ones next to it. But firefighters are getting a handle, making some progress on this fire. At last check, 61,000 acres burned and 5 containment. So thats some good news. Its kind of damp and cool this morning. Its not very windy. So hopefully that will also help fire crews battling this valley fire. Its still burning. This morning we were near highway 29. You can see some of the fire kind of creeping down the hill where we were. This is highway 29 near shady grove road and western mine road. This is west of the highway. The flames werent going up through the air and they didnt seem very tall but they were slowly creeping down the hill. Now, also middletown high school, i was at the Evacuation Center in calistoga yesterday. A lot of the people came up to me asking me has our high school survived. A focal community of the commune focal point of the community. Yes, we drove by it. Even though some of the homes and buildings were destroyed, the high school is standing. Its being used as a staging crew for pg e crews trying to reconnect power to some of the buildings. Weve seen other signs of life. Other animals. In fact, we saw these two goats, standing in the middle of a completely burnt up field. This is off highway 29 and grange road just past the casino over there. Weve seen a lot of dogs. Come back here live, there is a lot of chickens. Weve seen cats and other animals. Animals are very savvy when it comes to surviving the elements and surviving these types of things. I know that was one of the things, a lot of the people were asking about, mentioning they had to leave their horses and dog behind. Wondering if they made it. Im happy to report, there are quite a few animals and signs of life out here in middletown. Thats very enkuhn encouraging. Thank you. Because of all of the evacuation, all schools in the lake county and kelseyville School Districts are closed. Classes canceled at the Howell Mountain School District in napa county as well at polk valley union. And Yuba County College also closed. It will be a very long road to recovery for the neighborhoods that have been destroyed. Pam cook is in the studio now with the really heart warming part of the story. The community really pulling together to support each other and so many people are watching and wanting to help. Now, weve been showing you donations just pouring into the evacuation sites, particularly the napa county fairgrounds in calistoga where weve been showing you families camping in tents or sleeping in their cars. As you can imagine, they dont know how long they will be there because many of them dont even have a house to go back to. Bottled water has been appreciated with along with toiletries, diapers, extra clothing. These are the things they need right now. But the red cross says it does have plenty of donations like that, what they need is cash to help the evacuations in a more longterm way. Weve been showing you ways you can support the red cross. Theres also a warning, going out to the people forced to evacuate from their homes. Unfortunately, hard to believe but scammers are going onto social media looking for fire victims and a napa county official says evacuees have been asked for their address so that someone can supposedly go check on their house but that they are actually scammers trying to get into the evacuated homes to steal valuables. Officials are asking people do not give out your address to anyone that you do not know. Particularly on social media where other people can see that as well. Now, according to the napa valley register, there are extra officers patrolling the areas, the ones they can get to. Back to donations, really nice, some of the other cities that are jumping in the Calistoga Chamber of commerce, they will put donation boxes at the restaurants. Good. Im sure others will do that as well. I know all of us watching and everyone else want to know how we can help. If its 5 at a coffee shop or maybe you can write a check for 100 and send it to the red cross all of that will be needed. It will be needed for a long time. Thank you. Thank you. 7 46. The estimated time and they do by tracking cars all the way along the trip. Its taking are you kidding me . 75 minutes. There comes a time when you would say to yourself, well, you know what . Im not gonna go. This might be the time for some. Were also looking at highway 4 thats very slow from pittsburg all the way over to highway 680 and 680 is slow south of highway 4 to the walnut creek interchange. Remember, 580 in the dublin livermore area has been dublin livermore area has been slow. 880 slows at 238. San mateo and dumbarton bridge bridges, slow. So is the peninsula. Its very slow almost everywhere. Were looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. You can see there traffic is gonna it be backed up for a 25, 30minute delay. One more thing on the maps. Looking at the south bay and all of the freeways there are jam packed. We havent had any major crashes here. Thats the good news. Steve mentioned wet weather on highway 17. We have slow traffic. 17 has not been doing well at all. Lets go to steve. Thats more than drizzle. Thats steady rain. That makes sense. We do have a lot of changes here, thankfully. I mean, seriously, its time for a change here. Cooler pattern. We need rain for multiple reasons. Two systems coming in. A low has been offshore. Thats getting pulled off by a cold front coming down. Thats enhancing rain toward Santa Cruz Mountains down to monterey and a system to the north. First of all, lets talk about the fire conditions which were awful on saturday and sunday. Had the southeast wind of 30, 35 miles an hour. It created its own weather if you will and also wind within the fire. The temperatures were hot. Big changes today. Temperatures will start to come down. Look at the acreage from saturday to 3 00 to saturday at 6 00. 61,000 acres now. 5 contained. The good news, there are a lot of clouds on the way. Theres cooler temps. Maybe light rain. Weve had reports up into Mendocino County. A little bit around santa rosa and winds are nothing too heavy but a little bit. Maybe around cloverdale. Hopefully some of this makes it into lake county. Theres still some offshore. Look at this southwest of monterey. Thats being enhanced around monterey bay. I tweeted this out because ed wrote me and said steady rain at the 2,200foot elevation facing monterey bay from the summit. Theres water in the downpouts and puddles in the yard. Thank you, ed. 50s and 60s on the temps. Southwest, 22. Gusts to 30. Where have you been . Been dormant. Its back. That means a good 20, 25degree drop on the temp. You are getting lift associated with that as this system starts to kick it along. Out ahead of the system to the north, you are also getting a little lift in the warm sector of the front. Thats not something ive dade in a long ive said in a long, long time. The system will give us a lot of clouds and a little bit of rain. Santa cruz mountains, monterey. Some up to lake county. Watch what happens on wednesday night into thursday right there. That looks even better for Mendocino County, lake county. I think San Francisco, oakland, concord north. That will be the first okay rain of the season. Maybe making it farther south. Mostly cloudy. Cloudy. Much cooler inland highs. 60s and 70s down from 95 or 96 for some yesterday. So clouds increase. Cooler, windy and also some rain. Cloudy to mostly cloudy with i think the breeze is the big story for the 49ers game tonight. Its a huge change compared to what we had on the weekend and just on sunday. Cooling continues. Best bet for rain would be wednesday night. I think that one makes it to the north bay for sure. All right. Thats encouraging. That will help many, many reasons. Yeah. All right, steve. Thank you. 7 52. Facebook still chasing after youtube with its video service. At 8 00, how facebook plans to use some Virtual Reality as you watch from your phone. But first, some people are not at all happy with the new ad from quiznos. Why bernie man is considering taking legal action against that chain. The bicycle accused of attacking a zip car and its driver last month is scheduled to appear in court today. Well, burning man reportedly considering suing quiznos over a video ad that points fun at the festival. Lies the beginning of your new lives as burners. That ad parrydys the upcoming movie parry parodies the upcoming movie. They claim thats stealing intellectual property. 7 5. We continue our coverage of the devastating valley fire. Its burned at least 400 homes. Many of the evacuees had to leave with basically nothing heading into an Evacuation Center here in calistoga. Were looking at very heavy traffic almost everywhere. This is highway 4. Its crawling along to 680. A lot of clouds and a little bit of rain. Some to the north. Some to the south. Temperatures dropping off today. Well talk about a cooler week and see if we can get measurable amounts here. Grow old with me let us share what we see just you and i grow old with me let us share what we see and oh the best it could be just you and i you. You wake up in the morning and you go, okay. Everything were just out and then all of a sudden, it hits you. I dont know if all people got out. We didnt get any warning. I left because i had a bad feeling. Thousands are waking up after being forced to leash their homes to leave their homes due to fire. The valley fire has destroyed at least 400 homes and its threatening thousands more. Well take a live look at whats happening at the Evacuation Center in napa county. Thats where people are sleeping in their cars can, a lot of tents up as well. They were forced to evacuate their homes in a matter of minutes. That valley fire has been burning for a day and a half. 61,000 acres have burned. Oits ebbly its only 5 contained. We want to check in with brian flores. Hes been talking with evacuees. Theres people getting clothing. I see diapers. Other everyday necessities. A huge outpouring of support from the bay area. More help is being needed. Lets get right to alex savidge live in middletown with more on the devastation left behind. Youve seen a lot of terrible scenes this morning. Reporter yeah, you know good morning to you guys. We sort of moved around to a different location here in middletown. We are right off highway 175. Were on santa rosa avenue and here you can see just one of the hundreds of homes that were destroyed by the valley fire this weekend. This is right at 175 and santa rosa avenue. This home leveled. You can see there the chimney Still Standing. Well swing you around this way. You can see what this fire did. One home would be destroyed and then across the street, you see this house is Still Standing here. Now, let me show you some video here of the valley fire, 400 homes at least have been burned two apartment complexes were also leveled. There were at least ten businesses destroyed on top of that, there were thousands of other structures that have burned as well like barns and sheds. We took a drive it up 175 toward cobb. That area, we saw devastation on both sides of the road there. A number of homes destroyed in that area. But also quite a few homes Still Standing this morning. It really just depends on how this fire moved around. The fire is still on the move, moving in various directions this morning with very little containment. It started early on saturday. It quickly exploded in size. That was due in part to some steady winds and also the very dry brush that were dealing with up here. The fire again went in a number of Different Directions and that made it hard for crews to get a handle on it early on. Evacuees they had very little time to get out. It went in various Different Directions. It continues to do so. It went to the south. It went to the north. It went to the northeast, theert to the northwest. It was hard to get a grasp on it. The firefighters had to go into rescue mode. And yesterday, the smoke was so thick, that calfire was not able to mount a significant air attack. They wrernt able too make werent able to make more than a few drops. The visibility was reduced. Were told this morning that at least another 6,000 homes still remain in the path of this fire. But, again, it slowed down somewhat overnight. The winds have died down. The winds are calm this morning. That the hope is that fire crews will be able to begin to get a handle on this fire. But its spreading in several Different Directions and you are hoping they can slow the spread in the various areas. This home here is santa rosa area. One of hundreds of homes destroyed in middletown. You dont see any people as you drive around town. Everyone with the exception of a few weeks, have few folks have evacuated the area. Its kind of an eerie scene. Steve paulson wants to ask you about the weather out there. The winds tailed off. But is it cloudy up there . It looks like the clouds are rolling in. Reporter there are clouds. [no audio] we just lost his signal. But we know there are clouds out there. And also the smoke. I think well get a lift on the air quality. The smoke from the fires. Its a Health Hazard because the air quality is not that good. The smoke concentration could vary because of the weather, the winds or how far away you are from the fire. The smoke can irritate your eyes, it can affect breathing, especially if you have asthma or heart problems. The best advice, stay indoors as much as possible. If you have an air conditioner, set it on recirculating air. Lets go over to steve and gasia now. First pictures that really show the air quality, whats happening outside. One of our viewers contacted us through facebook and sent in a couple of pictures that show how bad the situation is. This is from john from the Clearlake Riviera neighborhood. This was taken before and after. This was before the valley fire kicked in an watch thats the and watch the next one. Not only the valley fire but there are so many fires in california. Reports of ashes all the way down to gilroy. As we put the two pictures side by side, you can see the first one is clouds but then the sun peeking through. The second one is completely flat. You were asking alex to look up and talk to us about possible clouds. I know the winds are changing, whats happening with humidity . Humidity will go up. The cloud cover is coming. We have a cold front coming in. Theres rain to the north. I know its still two days away. But the system coming in wednesday looks better for rain. The forecast does call for cooler conditions. The wind is variable. It should turn southerly, then go westerly later on. You can see most of the wind directions favor the west and the temperatures will come way down in the 60s by this evening. You can see some of the rain to the north. This is the warm sector of the front. It still has aways to go. Light rain or sprinkles have been reported around windsor, also petaluma. We have another system, though, the low drawn up out ahead of the system is producing decent rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. From monterey peninsula south, thats pretty good rain. 50s, 60s on our temps. The wind is the key. Its cablging up cranking up big time. That will blow a lot of the smoke out of here. It also lifts it up and kind of disperses is a little bit. Theres the low. That will be one area of rain. The next one will be to the north. The main message is cloudy to mostly cloudy. Breezy, windy, cooler. All the way through thursday. 60s and 70s on the highs. All right. Sal, what do you have for us . 580er something 580 or something new. Well, 580 and its taken an hour to drive from the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. This is not the worst ive seen it. Its gone up to 90 minutes. This is bad the drive between those two spots. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza, thats about a 40, 45 minute delay. Back to the east bay, we go. Highway 4 is no picnic as you come to 680 and 680 is backed up to the walnut creek interchange. As i pull back, you can see how bad it is. 880, 580 from tracy to dublin. Dumbarton bridge bridges are going to be slow and when up get over to the other side, 101 is recovering from earlier accidents and the south bay is slow. Almost everywhere you look this morning its not a good time to be driving the car. I know you have to go. But just dont get out there and be surprised by this horrible traffic. 8 08. Back to the desk. A lot of red on the screen, sal. Back to the Team Coverage of the valley fire which has forced hundreds of people out of their homes in lake county. Brian flores live. You are at the name county fairgrounds talking to people. They are finding out if their homes survived the flames. Reporter they are still awaiting word on whether thats the case. Were live at the napa county napa valley fairgrounds in calistoga. Gasia asked a question about whether donations are still coming in. Yes, there are. Weve seen several pickup trucks come by with food, drinks or toiletries. We should point out that the red cross says they are humbled by that but they want to donate monetarily. That way they can filter where the needs are just in case crosses our fingers if it doesnt happen that this fire gets worse that they can use the money toward what the evacuees need. One of the evacuees here is jack oliver who lost his home in loch lomond when the fire broke out. Thanks for joining us. How are you doing today . How are you getting by . One minute at a time. Kind of just the reality is starting to sit in. Seeing all of the people around here, how theyve been affected by this. Its been really hard. Have to keep our spirits up and kind of go with it. Take the punches and go. Reporter talk to me how quickly the fire spread. Were you at home at the time and did you see it . I did. I seen it at the top of cobb mountain. When it got to the bottom of middletown, it was about 15 minutes. It was one of the fastest traveling fires ive ever seen. It was scary. Scarry. Reporter did you stay there you said you stayed there for a little bit. Were were you able to grab what you were you able to grab what you could . It came down so fast, like we had about five minutes to grab photo albums and a few things and just throw them in the car and go. That was it. Reporter and you came here to calistoga at the napa valley Evacuation Center . Yes, yes. Reporter talk about i mean ive heard from several people, obviously they are devastated that they lost their homes. But they are kind of overcome with with the graciousness and how people are coming together in times like this. Are you seeing the same thing as well . I am. Everybody is coming together. Middletown is a tightknit community. They are even tighter now. Seeing the people that are being effected is just it makes them get Even Stronger and pull together even more. And reporter able to get any sleep last night . A little bit. A little bit. Kind of rough. Reporter you are sleeping in a tent from what i understand. Yeah, a tent and five dogs. Reporter how are the dogs handling everything . They are a little bit nervous. They know that things are not right. As long as they have their yummies, they are okay. Reporter all right. Jock oliver, thank you. I know steve pawl paulson mentioned there are a lot of people that usually send out the weather alerts and jack is actually one of the weather people that does email steve on occasion. Chefjack71. He wanted to pass along hes doing okay. He wanted to say hello. He watches you all of the time. Back out here live, people are doing the best they can, a lot of them are having as jack mentioned, as positive of a spirit as can be, they arestill waiting to see they are still waiting to see if their homes are standing. It could be tomorrow at the earliest to find that out. Yesterday, the red cross served 900 meals at the Evacuation Center. Certainly a lot of people and this area has been ravaged by fire since late july, really. They could certainly use a break. A lot of people wondering whether the homes are left standing. Back to you. Jack has such an important story to tell us. Hes still with you. Can you ask him what would he say to those people who are waiting until the very last minute to leave or perhaps those who say i want to stay and plea death my and plea death my protect my house. What does he say to those people . Reporter gasia was asking people what do you say to people who maybe want to stay, you know, you get the Evacuation Order as soon as you can to leave but some people decide to stay to try to save their home. What do you say to people . Dont stay. The firestorm is really dangerous. Its dangerous. You have exploding pine cones. Ember. I have a burn hole in my shorts from being out there. Its that dangerous. Its not its not vuzzable to advisable to stick around. People should listen too the Sheriffs Department and the calfire. They know what they are talking about. Its a dangerous situation. The less people around, the more they can do the work. Reporter good advice. Jack does have some experience fighting fires, heel its he tells me. A lot of people just waiting to hear whats next. We got an update from calfire but well keep you updated here on mornings on 2. Back to you. Thank you. Thank jack for sharing his story. Other Evacuation Centers include the Highland Senior Center on bowers center. The coal creek Equestrian Center around the church. The big valley ranch ria and in Mendocino County, the redwood empire fairgrounds are open. Most centers will accept small pets and the fairgrounds and Equestrian Center has room for big animals. As we share the news of the big, devastating fire, people in the prayer want to do their part. What the red cross says they have enough of in the way of donations. Lets go to sal with whether or not things have been improving. It really is very slow out there. Lets start off and take a look at the east bay commute which has been the toughest. Its really slow on highway 24 westbound as you drive from walnut creek to the tunnel. And 680 is slow from concord to walnut creek as well. 80 is just ridiculous from the carquinez bridge down to the macarthur maze. Lets move along to the bay bridge toll plaza. That is backed up for a 45 minute delay unless you have fast track. Its better or if you are using the carpool lane. We mentioned the east bay and how slow it is. 580 is getting in on the action. We had earlier problems. Its solid from tracy all the way over to dublin and 880 is backed up down to fremont and the peninsula has slow traffic. 8 20. Lets go to steve. We have a big change in the weather. It starts with an area of low clouds. A couple reports already in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Scotts valley as well. Had reports of wet ground. Some rain in Mendocino County. Very light in petaluma, windsor, santa rosa. More sprivlles than anything sprinkles than anything else. A huge drop in the temps. Were going from the 90s to the 70s for some. Rain line seems to be lifting northward from fort bragg but maybe willits north. But theres some offshore that may develop later on. You can keep the little showers embedded with that. We could conceivably get some. Cooler. The breezy has tailed off. It should pick up later on. A secondary system. This is associated with the low. Thats ramping up some rain south of monterey. Some of that has made it into the Santa Cruz Mountains as well. 50s, 60s. The key is the delta breeze that collapsed last week and into the weekend. We had a strong southeast. Theres a pretty good breeze also in the santa clara valley. Thats the low. See how that is picking up. You get enhancement off monterey south. I would think morgan hill is getting it as well as gilroy. The system to the north will push it inland. Cloudy to mostly cloudy on our pattern here and even l. A. Starting to pick up a little bit of rain. Theres protections maybe about. 25 of rain. If you are traveling down there, its not just down here. It will be there as well. Mc, cooler mostly cloudy, cooler, breezy to windy. A stronger system is poised to move in on wednesday. More on that in ten minutes. Sal . Am i going to sal . You are going to us. Back to you guys. Five people have been hospitalized. Still ahead were continuing our coverage of the california wildfires. The valley fire broke out at crews were already fighting another intense fire, the butte fire. Well tell you the toll its taking in the sierra foot hills. Firefighters start to make some progress against the valley fire. Coming up well hear from calfire about the next billion chag and task ahead of challenge and task ahead of them now that the fire has swept through the town of middletown. Its been a pretty slow commute all over the bay area, especially in the east bay and on the bridges. Well give you another rundown straight ahead. We have some light rain reports from Santa Cruz Mountains even up toward forestville. Well see if some of that rain can make it here and also into lake county. Welcome back. Many evacuees are wondering if they still have a home. The valley fire is not showing any signs of easing. It grew another 11,000 acres overnight. Its now up to 61,000 acres. All in less than 36 hours. Heres a map, gasia. Thats right. Well show you a map here that shows all of the areas affected. The fire started in the community of cobb. Its now burning in lake, napa and sonoma counties. This morning, the fire crews, they are starting to get a line around the wildfire. Calfire said the fire is now 5 contained. Thats up from 0 containment overnight. Allie rasmus is live in middletown where the huge fire has left so many people homeless. Reporter thats right. One of the most disturbing things about this fire is seeing the erratic and arbitrator path of destruction it took. This that you are looking at used used to be a twostory apartment building. Now you see the car ports and appliances. Now that the sun came up, we noticed that the playground is intact. Right across from this multihousing apartment building, right across the houses, across the street and here on the corner are completely intact. This house has a nice garden that was totally spared by the flames. Its like that all over middletown. If you are driving through, you will see places where the houses have burned in one spot and the house next door has been spared. Calfire has its good at making progress. 5 contained even though it consumed 61,000 acres. They have a big task ahead. Dave shoo is with us. What is the big challenge today . What you will be working on . Number one, we want to still maintain firefighters as safety and make sure that the pub firefighters safety and making sure that the public is safe. We want to start to get a solid control line around the fire. As well, we have to continue to work on the interior of the fire, making sure that all of those shot spots in the fire are out hot spots in the fire are out and making sure depending upon what the weather does for us, we dont have the fire turn back and start to burn into areas its already burned. Reporter its also unclear the extent of the damage so far. Weve heard anywhere as many as 400 homes burned to 1,000 structures burned. Talk about the challenge and trying to figure out and april ses the damage. Well assess the damage. Well, a fire this size, its going to take some time to really comen with an accurate an analysis come up with an accurate analysis of what happened. We had crews started yesterday. They will continue to work today. They will be looking at, analyzing where the structures that were destroyed and damaged, what structures survived, and coming up with a very good survey of the entire fire area to find out exactly what those numbers are. But of course, thats going to take some time to cover this large of an area. Reporter thank you, david, talking about the work that needs to be done to continue combating the valley fire and also the work that lies ahead in terms of fully assessing the damage. Thats will be a big challenge for firefighters. Back to you guys. Thank you. Steve paulson says theres some encouraging change. Yeah. What are they facing out there, the firefighters . Well, it will be cloudy, cooler. Maybe light rain. They dont want the wind to pick up. All reports it tails off. I expect it to pick up later on. We have a lot of reports of drizzle especially from the yacht harbor, petaluma, windsor, rain up north in Mendocino County and in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Scotts valley. Also at the summit, highway 17. The low clouds are marching in. Two systems impacting us today for a big drop in the temps and lewis who checks in, hes a runner, he says steve, it was windy and ice cold at the csm track. That would be college of san mateo. He said no, really, its cold. I believe him. The system up toward fort bragg, northern Mendocino County, but off the coast, there are a few isolated cells. That has prompted again some drizzle reports. I know its not much but well take what we can get. There will be a cooler pattern. But westsouthwest of monterey. I would expect 50s, 60sen temps. The 60s on the temps. The breeze has picked up for some. Gusts to 32 in the delta and san jose, a good southeast at 15. Sfo, south at 13. Thats the low impacting Santa Cruz Mountains. Look at that. Right by monterey as well, the cold front to the north. Combination of the two are sweeping in for a mostly cloudy, cooler, windy forecast. There will be rain for some, drizzle for others. 46 os and 70s but 60s and 70s. A change, sal. Finally a change. Its a little bit cooler, steve. This might help with a lot of things. The commute is not one of them. Its just as bad as it was last week when it was hot. This is a look at some of the commutes. We can go back to the eastshore freeway and show you the traffic here is going to be superslow about an hour to drive between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. There were several crashes along the way and thats why its taking so long. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza. You can see thats a very big delay. It has been pretty slow throughout the entire route there getting into San Francisco. Were also looking at 880 southbound and northbound. 238 is where it begins to slow in both directions. So 238 north and south. Its going to be very slow all the way down to san jose. And the dumbarton bridge san mateo and the dumbarton bridge bridge, not good. The butte fire has burned through more than 71,000 acres. Theres new information from calfire that morning that the fire has destroid at least destroyed at least 135 homes. Heres more with the latest on the firefight. Reporter were along Mountain Ranch road between san andre yes and mountain san andreas and Mountain Ranch. You can see a fire crew has been here all night protecting a home, making sure no flareups impact this home. Really three big positive headlines coming out of the fire after days of intense fire. Thats number one. Calfire says they made Good Progress overnight due to much calmer fire activity, number two, that they saw light if any winds which meant a much calmer fire and number three, they are expecting dense smoke to clear from the area allowing for them to get some airyial attack aerial attack on the fire. As we look at the crews on the ground. I one thing i want to show you in the sky, speaking of the smoke, usually not a big deal to say, hey, we could see the clouds but the fact we could see the clouds is significant in that it means visibilities are increasing and the smoke is starting to clear. For as much damage as this fire has already done today, crews say they are hopeful to get the planes back in the air to attack this fire from the air and hopefully continue that progression of greater and greater containment. So much so that some people may be allowed back to their homes. No definite plans but there is the priority right now is to hope to get more people home as they continue to make progress on that fire. Back to you. All right, thank you. 8 38. Well in lake county, it will be a long, long road to recovery for the neighborhoods that have been completely destroyed. Pam cook is in the studio right now with more on the support they are getting. How you can help and a warning going out to fire victims today. Very sad, such a hard story to report this morning. So much support, though, going out to the families. Now, donations have been pouring in as youve seen to the evacuation sites particularly the napa county fairgrounds in calistoga where the families are forced to camp in tents. Some them sleeping in cars. Bottled water has been appreciated along with toiletries, diapers, blankets, extra clothing, things they need right now. But the red cross says it does have plenty of those physical donations. What they need now is cash to try to help these evacuees in a more longterm way. Unfortunately, there is also a warning going out to the people who have been forced from their homes. Scammers are going on social media, looking for fire victims. A napa county fire victim said evacuees have been asked for their address so someone could go check on their house but what they are actually doing is trying to get to the evacuated homes to steal val huables valuables. Law enforcement says do not give your address to anyone you dont know. Weve seen these devastating pictures showing neighborhoods destroyed. Right across the street, homes are intact. Those are the homes thieves are going into. Some are even saying they are news crews. You want to know if your home is destroyed, is it still there. Dont give your address to anyone. And dont post it on social media. Because people are taking advantage. We see that after any natural disaster, i guess widespread disaster in this case. Very sad. Thank you. Looks like b. A. R. T. We only have the ability to regulate anything built before 1979 and so our tolls are limited here. I think the focus needs to be on building more aid formable house affordable housing. Your response would be for those folks who feel stuck right now, theres not much you can do if you are in an older building. You will try to build better from now on. Yeah. Certainly, we know that there are challenges in retrofitting a lot of these older buildings and weve got some programs that can help. What we are atrying to do is we are trying to do is we have rent control ordinance that protecting vulnerable folks that we know will get pushed out on the streets if we continue to see these increases in rent. At the same time, we protect the reasonable expectations of Property Owners who know that the burden cant be entirely on them. Right, right. Let me ask you this, i know you want to work hard to improve the fate of the homeless. What are you doing there . We know there is a real challenge with inventory with this. Were working to see how we can move forward to build or retrofit those spaces that would allah for apartments for homeless.
