Its only taking 19 minutes pick however it is not going to be too crowded. When you get to the bay bridge there is a backup at the toll plaza. A 10 minute wait. Also looking at interstate 880 north and southbound. Traffic is moving along nicely. In the south bay we have not had a big commute. A couple of minor issues. We have a crash reported that we will talk about coming up in a little bit. A serious city crash that we will get to in the next update. Today, a big rally in San Francisco against hate speech. That will be tomorrow. The series of demonstrations will start tomorrow also some counter demonstrations this weekend. Alex savidge is in San Francisco with what we can expect. Reporter good morning. The mayor in San Francisco is urging people to stay away from that controversial rightwing rally at crissy field tomorrow. Hes hoping people will take part in peaceful counter demonstrations planned throughout the weekend. The first will happen at noon today on the steps of city hall. The mayor and other civic activists will hold a unite against hate rally. There will be a similar rally tomorrow at noon that will happen at Civic Center Plaza with music and other speakers. These events are meant to counter the rally happening saturday at chrissy field. An event organized by the right wing group, Patriot Prayer. That starts at 2 pm. The entire presidio will be fenced off and police will screen people for weapons as they come into that area. The National Park service approved the permit for the Patriot Prayer rally. The permit was denied yesterday for a similar rally planned for sunday in berkeley. That was an event organized by a group called, no to marxism. Yesterday the city sent a letter to the organizer citing the reasons the permit was denied. The application was sent in late , it was incomplete and was no explanation of security arrangements. Legal experts say berkeley is within its rights to deny that permit. The Supreme Court has been clear. The government can require a permit for speech so long as there is clear criteria, so long as decisions are not based on the viewpoint of the speaker and so long as there are procedural safeguards. Reporter organizers of the rally in berkeley tell ktvu they still plan to show up on sunday even though the city rejected their permit request. Police and berkeley are preparing for hundreds of people to show up at Civic Center Park. They are preparing for the possibility of many counter protesters in that area. The mayor of berkeley has urged counter protesters to stay away from the white ring rally in Civic Center Park and instead attend a separate demonstration that will happen at uc berkeley. A very busy week of protests and counter protest. It all starts today with that unite against hate rally happening on the steps of city hall. Its going to affect a lot of people. The National Hurricane center says the storm could stall overland for several days. President trump is about to face what is often seen as a critical test for a president , dealing with a hurricane. Earlier this month he visited fema with Hurricane Season underway. The director has only been in place since june. The former secretary of Homeland Security which oversees fema is now the president s chief of staff. The political consequences can be major. George w. Bush when president was criticized for the way he responded to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The president has been briefed and will continue to be updated as the story progresses. Its something he is very aware of and will keep a watchful eye on. He stands ready to provide resources if needed. President trumpwill be getting updates as the storm gets closer to texas. The white house says the coast guard is moving its assets outside of the storm path but they will be ready to rush back when the hurricane passes by. Struck the San Francisco chronicle is reporting an inmate at the santa rita jail has been charged with killing a cellmate minutes before he was due to be released. On july 6, james hunter was scheduled to be released. A gel technician remotely opened the doors of his cell telling him to leave so he could be processed for release. The chronicle says a jail deputy on patrol found his cellmate that on the floor. Hunter had not yet left the jail. He was kept in custody and is now being held on a murder charge. Its looking like uber is giving up on its plans to move employees into the Old Sears Building in oakland. The San FranciscoBusiness Times reports uber has put the building up for sale for 123 million. As many as 3000 employees were supposed to be moving into the building next year. And marge, uber said it would take over space and a new Office Building in San Francisco. Most of the Oakland Building would then be rented out. The work continues at the oroville dam but people are furious downstream. The reason the city has concerns over safety and theyre trying to get the government involved. The coast guard said about was seen going in circles yesterday off the coast of long beach with no one on board. The boater was seen treading water about five miles off the coast. The coast guard pulled him to safety. He told rescuers he hit a wave and fell out of the boat. He said he put his flipflops on his hands and use them to tread water for about 20 minutes. Very ingenious. The state Supreme Court upheld a voter approved initiative to speed up the process of carrying out the Death Penalty. California voters approved proposition 66. It sets a fiveyear limit for appeals of the Death Penalty. Critics argue the limit is not realistic. They say the ruling is concerning because it can take decades to find evidence of innocence. Supporters say the ruling is sending a message. It still is a message to every attorney and every judge in the state that the will of the people is that these cases move forward. If we are moving too quickly through the process we may not ever have the opportunity to do that. There is a greater likelihood an innocent person would be executed. To give you an idea of the potential strength of harvey, forecasters predict winds could be stronger than super storm sandy. That one was deadly and killed 150 people and caused billions of dollars in damage from the caribbean to new york. Some of those areas have still not recovered. As steve comes in, you said is going to move slowly overland which makes it worse. I think yesterday was the 25th anniversary of andrew as well. That is one we retired. I do not think there will be another harvey after this weekend. About 110 miles per hour. Its between Corpus Christi and brownsville. Ground fault rainfall could be measured in feet. We have been talking about major protests and counter protests planned this weekend for San Francisco and berkeley. Although berkeley denied the permit for a no to marxism rally set for sunday, organizers could still show up. The event was expected to draw about 300 people. Berkeley says it did not deny the permit application because of political ideology but because the application was incomplete there was no photo id or arrangements for first aid services. The application was turned in three days late and lacked an explanation of security arrangements. Police say they will still be ready for any protesters. There will be increased presence. There are more resources allocated to this event. The rally is organized by amber cummings, who describes herself as a transgender patriot. She says the message of her event has been misunderstood. She said it is to demonstrate against marxism and she did not want any white supremacist to attend. Many people are expected to head for crissy field tomorrow for a rally and a counter protest. Officials are warning everybody to avoid driving to that area. Several roads will be closed. Parking will be hardtofind. The road closures include the crissy field center, Fort Point National historic site, the Golden Gate BridgeWelcome Center and the presidio visitor center. Those will all be closed. Officials suggesting anyone trying to get around that part of the city should take public transportation, walk or ride a bike. The staff at San Francisco general reportedly have been told to get ready for the possibility of a large number of casualties connected to the protest. The examiner reports a mass email was sent to doctors, nurses and other employees. They were told the city is activating its Emergency Operations and. A hospital spokesperson told the paper there will be more staff this weekend the unusual but that is a normal procedure when there are major events. The aclu says its suing the state of california because it throughout 45,000 mailin ballots because of invalid signatures. The aclu says in each of those cases Election Officials determine the voter signature on the envelope did not match the signature on file. The aclu says those of voters were never notified they are that dash their ballots were invalid. The lawsuit is asking the state to notify voters of any signature mismatches and also give them a chance to fix the problem before a ballot is thrown out. Platforms, rigs and Oil Refineries have already shut down because of the storm. Those refineries have a capacity of about 1 Million Barrels per day. Experts say gas prices could surge up to . 30 over the weekend. The gulf coast accounts for 17 of total u. S. Crude oil production. Space x celebrating after another successful launch of a falcon 9 rocket. It took off yesterday from Vandenberg Air force base. It then landed on a barge in the pacific ocean. The rocket carried an earth observation satellite for the government of taiwan. It was the 15th landing of a falcon 9 rocket. Another project of elon musk has been approved. The city council of hawthorne in Los Angeles County is letting him take a twomile tunnel from the headquarters of space x into city property. It will be 44 feet underground. We found that there were a lot of charges made to the Construction FundProgram Representative from the independent audit firm hired by the city answer questions about its findings with the Stadium Authority which is made up of the mayor, vice mayor and city council members. The audit found that the 49ers owed close to 115,000. Less than the initial estimate of 2 million. The city paid 200,000 for the audit. Our auditor admitted that is not a substantiated number. Im perplexed and disappointed. Reporter city officials learned that the lower amount may not be accurate. The vice mayor said city staff found that the 49ers may only owe 25,000 and that the team has not been billed yet. The Team President said it has paid every bill. There are no stadiums in california that do not have an 11 pm curfew on weeknights. We think its a benefit to the city to host these events. They benefit. They get revenue from these events. The last one was wilma in 2005. The track will go in as a category 3 hurricane on friday night. Over the weekend, by monday, it will weaken. It will be around houston on monday. Friday through monday, which means theres going to be a lot of rain. In fact, victoria, texas, the outlook is for about 32 inches of rain over the weekend. Most of that will be over the weekend. 110 miles between Corpus Christi and brownsville. The winds are picking up and Tropical Force Winds have been observed near Corpus Christi. The nonprofit urban Research Group says since 2010 San Francisco has added more than 122,000 jobs but only 13,000 new housing units. In Santa Clara County 171,000 jobs were created not only 28,000 homes were built during the same time period. The study found home prices and rent has doubled during the period and the study recommends the city of san jose build 120,000 new homes over the next 30 years. The group says cities should look at making it easier to build in law units and other smaller homes. They advised cities to spend more on affordable housing.
