Families. There is one victim that they have not been able to identify the body. There is a question of safety of the building because it is unstable after the devastating fire. They have cranes there. You can see Oakland Police watson and nelson are at the podium right now. It looks like we are going to get an update from battalion chief melinda, who is speaking on this recovery effort for the last 48 hours. 75 of this warehouse has been searched. The cause of this fire is still unknown. The origin of the fire, yesterday however they told us they believe this fire started in the back of the warehouse. Thats with some of the assistance that they have been getting from the bureau of tobacco and firearms. They didnt know whether it started on the first or second floor. This warehouse housed artist and we spoke to people who lived there at one point. There were maybe 1012 visual artist musicians who lived there at one time and rented out spaces in the back of the building and some rented out rvs that were inside the warehouse. In addition they would also rent out the space for parties and events, music concerts. In this case they would charge the promoters at the event to have events there and would charge people at the door to come and attend the event. Thats what was going on friday night when this party happened and the fire broke out. Im going to turn it over to jana watson. We would like to provide you with an Operational Update. At this time i would like to turn it over to Alameda County sheriff deputy. Tyamode for Alameda County. There has been no changeover night in the total victims recovered. The number has shifted within the number 36. At this time we have 26 families that have been notified. We have nine tentative ids and one remaining that needs to be identified. Entified. Police allow me to introduce Oakland Fire Department battalion chief. She will update you on operations that took place last night and early this morning. Is morning. Good morning, so, as you recall yesterday we were forced to suspend recovery operations interior due to the instability of the structure. Working throughout the day yesterday and last night. We are able to remove the wall that was presenting the greatest danger and we were also able to put in some storing to stabilize some of the areas. This morning at 2 20 a. M. We went back and resumed recovery operations. At this time we were able to clear approximately 85 of the building right now. We will continue that throughout the day. There is one corner that remains unstable. Thats another thing we are doing throughout the day is stabilizing that corner to search that last section. Section. I would like to update our citizens in our community regarding the pg e plan power outage. Currently the power is still off in this specific area. They are anticipating that the power will be returned by maybe 8 00 a. M. , but right now safety is paramount, so the power will remain off while the crane and heavy equipment is here still processing the scene. I would also like to call in my partner, Public Information officer, marco marquez. We would like to provide some information to our community. We have a lot of very goodwill citizens, community members, people outside of the city of oakland, outside of the state, even outside of the country who want to donate. And deservingly so donate. We are logistically challenged to take donations here. We have a system set up and have information to share for anyone who would like to donate. Please allow him to provide that information. Good morning, everyone. My name is marco marquez. One of the oakland Public Information officers. The the information to share with you is there is a web page at you caring. Com. If you go in the search bar there and search the oakland fire or victims of the oakland fire, you will see a link that is connected there set up by the city as well as the red cross. Now, here at the site, we are experiencing an overwhelming amount of support and people are bringing food and asking how to help financially. It is overwhelming here and it is set up online where you can make a donation where you are here or international. As you can imagine the impact on the family and the community. Those that are asking that want to give back is to give back through this website. It goes a long way. The funds will be appropriately distributed. If you visit that site, you can see how. This is just an ask to the community. If you do feel, we know that you are praying, we know your thoughts are with us. If you feel like giving financially, please go to that website at you care. Com. Thank you. Im going to start from my right and work our way around. Do you know what the challenges are, the specific challenges about that 15 remaining that is holding that part up . Sure. Its primarily that corner. If you face the building on that left corner of the building, we are not able to totally secure that yet. We are going to be putting in exterior bracing and in the back it still needs to be processed with our crews. Will the rain affect anything tomorrow . You know, i havent really approached that with rain as of yet. The rain shouldnt adversely affect what we are doing. Go ahead. Go ahead. Based on the areas that remain unsearched, i dont anticipate it going up. There is one section that is still in an area that has some potential, but otherwise, no. Rwise, no. On the website you mentioned there are several areas yes, sir, that is correct. There also is an oakland as one set up that you will see. Those two are set up for this specific instance. Ic instance. [inaudible] [inaudible] yes, are the issue with that corner is its unsupported laterally moving across. So that gets shifted on the wall. If we move it there, that causes that wall to become unstable. We need to put in bracing to support that entire corner. If we move the para pit wall, that other wall could become unstable. We dont want to do that. To do that. [inaudible] im sorry, i couldnt hear your full question. Could you repeat your question. Speak up, please. , please. [inaudible] [inaudible] not at this time. Of this time. Of [inaudible] [inaudible] we are still working to reconcile that list. We still do have people reported as missing. How many . One unidentified. Nidentified. So the question was just one identified and that is correct. I cant provide you the number right now at the top of my head. I dont want to be inaccurate. We are working to reconcile the list of missing versus the identified and the pending ids. He pending ids. The fire and point of origin and what happened . They definitely focused in on a section that is of interest, but it will remain under investigation for a while. R a while. [inaudible]. I dont have that information. Is that done by hes . The hes is the primary investigator and supported by our office. [inaudible] [inaudible] im sorry. I didnt quite understand. Uite understand. Is that a secure origin of the fire . No maam. The area we have to search is in that corner that we have to get to. It hasnt been searched so we cant clear it until we go through it. [inaudible] are they controlling the area . The District AttorneyNancy Omalley indicated yesterday at the press conference that her office they have an investigation. I want to make that perfectly clear that the Alameda CountyDistrict Attorneys office Nancy Omalley leads the investigation. They are the primary investigators. So they are managing and handling that portion of the investigation. Go ahead. Go ahead. In terms of the identification process is there anything taken from that process . Yes, there is. We understand and recognize oakland is a very diverse community. In our diverse community, we have many different groups and we are very sensitive to everyone in our community. R community. It doesnt matter what group. We are very sensitive to everyone to answer your question. Question. It is absolutely very difficult to put a time line. The most Important Message we want to send because we know families are watching. We know 36 families are watching. We know other families are watching as well. And also to our community. We are not going to put an end time. We are going to continue to search. We are going to continue the investigation. We are going to continue the process until absolutely every piece of debris is removed from this building, every area has been searched. So, families in our Community Know there is nothing left at this location, and then again the investigation and the process continues. So we will certainly keep you posted as far as we bring closure to some areas, but continue in other areas. Her areas. [inaudible] [inaudible] yes. Yes. I dont believe so. I have to check code. But i dont believe that they are. At they are. [inaudible]. Same thing. I would have to check and see. It isnt coding for residential. The building is not. That would just depend on how thats looked at by code for a commercial building. [inaudible] [inaudible] did the official release the name to indicate [inaudible] te [inaudible] right now we are actively working with an advocate from the Lgbt Community so that we are sensitive and that we are properly reporting. Eporting. [inaudible] [inaudible] yeah, absolutely. Again, we are working through the building. We will continue to search through the building areas that we can get to. When we have completed our search and we are limited by that corner, then we have to stop until the corner is secured. R is secured. [inaudible] [inaudible] i dont think, until the investigation is done, i wouldnt comment on how people are found. That would be primarily come from Alameda County sheriffs Coroners Office. Rs office. [inaudible] so we havent found any obviously recently. We dont expect to. Certainly we are hoping we dont find anymore. You know the primary thing thats really got us a little bit more up lifted and moving forward is we are back in the building search which is what we want to do. More clearly we want to make sure everything is clear. Rything is clear. We are going to take one last question. Go ahead, sir. Head, sir. Where do you think today [inaudible] there is two pockets that remain unsearched. One of them is still being looked at and processed by atf. My hope is that will be completed today. There is no reason why it shouldnt be. The remaining is the corner that is unstable. As soon as we can stabilize that corner, well get in and search it. We dont expect to find any victims in that area. We will continue to search that area. It will not take much time once we are able to get back in there. Will that be done by today . That will depend on how long it takes to stabilize that corner. At this time, we really would like to conclude this portion of the press conference. We will update you with a time for our next Operational Update briefing. We would like to return chief back to the field along with his support team so work can continue. Myself, and Public Information officer marquez and deputy will be available for any side questions that we may not have been able to provide you with. Please, again, thank you for your patience, and we will certainly update you on our next briefing. They have been through 85 of the building. 15 still unstable. The left front corner of the building he said. The number still stands. 36 people, victims have been located. 26 have been identified and the families notified. Nine other people tentatively identified and 1 person still needs to be identified. We heard them say they are still working through. They are not sure if there are people listed as missing because they are comparing that list to the people that have been identified. They are going back there into that building as soon as they can. Thats what they want the do. They want to make sure they have been through all the building but making sure its safe to the recovery crew. We brought it live to you on 2. We are going to sal for the commute. How does it look . City officials in san jose dont want to wait for a tragedy before reviewing policies and procedures. The code says the city has 219 warehouses. They have to take several steps to check the properties with problems, that involves warrants. Days or weeks can pass before they cite the properties. These are not always the quickest means to get into a building. It can take us a while to get the evidence we need to get the warrants. We have asked people that have made the complaints to do declarations of what they know is in the building, but we need probable cause to get into the building. The city Officials Say the best way to help prevent a tragedy from happening is for Property Owners to be proactive and comply with the time consuming process early on. Time is now 6 28.
