Looking pretty good in the east bay. Somewhat surprisingly light on 680. From benecia bridge and you might want to get while the getting is good if that is your commute. Through hercules, not that bad. Right now, at least in the east bay, we seem to have fewer drivers, and i think what is behind that, is a lot of people, they are using ferries and bart, into San Francisco and not just taking the car, and even though there is a crowd at the bay bridge, the volume is just not the same. And driving in the citys financial district and south of market, as you know, has been impacted by super bowl closures. And 6 02. Lets go back to the desk. Thank you, sal. And denver bron hes practice squad player raised in oakland will not be around for the team for the super bowl. He was questioned by police, as part of an undercover prostitution sting, in the south bay, and ktvu reporter janine dela vega joins us from levi stadium with more on the story. Reporter pam, the player that we are talking about is rookie safety ryan murphy. He is on the Denver Broncos practice squad. Now, Team Management doesnt want any distractions. So murphy has lost his chance to be here. Here in santa clara, at levi stadium. On super bowl day. Now, here is what we know. The Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office detained murphy, at around 5 00 p. M. Yesterday at the motel six near the san jose airport. A source tells ktvu a prostitute went to the motel and told undercover officers she needed to get something from her car, and they followed her to a nearby parking lot, and found murphy and his brother waiting in the car. And murphys brother was cited for solicitation. And released. And murphy was questioned. But not cited or arrested. The whole bunch of them, all congregated over here. And then within maybe 20 minutes to half an hour, all of a sudden, we had black vans, and people in suits and all this kind of stuff. And moving around with the sheriffs and everything. Mour fy grew up in oakland and went to oakland tech. The broncos signed them to the practice squad in november. The head coach issued this statement, saying, quote, although practice squad safety ryan murphy was not cited by police, we decided it was best for the team if we continued our preparations for super bowl 50 without him. Ryan is returning to denver. But his status as a practice squad player has not changed at this time. End quoted. This whole incident goes to show how Law Enforcement is cracking down hard on prostitution, and human trafficking. And they have a task force dedicated to this. Thank you, janine. 6 04. New this morning, the family of former raiders player ken stabler says that he had a brain disease. Cte. The New York Times reports when he died of colon cancer this past july, his brain was removed, during the autopsy, and sent to scientists, and it was studied for several months. Now researchers at Boston University say he had stage three of the degenerative brain disease believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head. That disease can only be detected when brains are examined after death. And scientists still do not know why some players get the disease and other does not. Time now is 6 05. Some uber drivers may be planning to disrupt super bowl sunday. Now, according to flyers, and videos, posted on social media, drivers are being eng couraged to strike. By turning off their apps on sunday. There is also talk about staging a protest around levi stadium. The drivers want to call attention to recent fare cuts. About 200 uber drivers had a similar protest in San Francisco earlier this week. A protest by the homeless is planned today in San Francisco. To show outrage about the amount of money the city is spending on the super bowl. A group of the homeless and their supporters will be setting up what they call a homeless super bowl city. Among other things, protesters say there is only one bed for every six Homeless People in San Francisco. The city of San Francisco will spend about 5 million on super bowl festivities, and homeless advocates say that money would be better spent on homeless services. Super bowl l is bringing all kinds of events, and attractions to the bay area this week. And in San Francisco, in addition to super bowl city, there is also the nfl experience. At moscone center. And in other news this morning, a chp officer is recovering after a knife attack in San Francisco. A homeless man is in jail. Last night, Police Identified the suspect as 44yearold noel corpus. Police say the officer and his partner responded to calls of a man wandering on the essex street onramp to highway 80 eastbound. Now, when the Police Officer, a seven year veteran, approached some of the tents out there, corpus they say pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer. Several times. In the neck and the chest. This type of incident just really shocked us, as you can imagine, at a very serious, violent attack, and also, a very traumatic for officers on the scene who were there with their friends. Now, witnesses were able to describe corpus. He was lated arrested in front of a Wells Fargo Bank at fourth and brannen. Police have not released his booking photo as of yet. But he is facing charges that include assault on a peace officer, and attempted murder. Well, two out of three burglary suspects are now in custody, after police say a woman stole a police car, and dragged an officer with that car. 26yearold yitzi udara marillo was relevanted in san jose, facing several charges including assault with a deadly officer on a Police Officer and auto theft. 22yearold Anthony Reyes was arrested saturday, after that incident. He allegationedly rammed a police car with the stolen car that all three suspects were in, before marillo escaped. Police are still out there searching for 35yearold christian hernandez. 11 minutes after 6 00. And we are talking about a new case of the zika virus here in the u. S. And still the traffic is not as bad as i thought it would be, given that there are two crashes there. And just a little bit lighter volume. And speaking of bart, i just think more people are using the system, especially with the super bowl closures in San Francisco. They are simply not taking the car to the city, and i think that is a great idea. But some people still have to cross the bay bridge. Lets go out and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. And you can see here, at the toll plaza, it is about a it is crowded about, a 15 to 20 minute delay. 6 32. Back to you at the desk. Sal, thank you. Local and federal Law Enforcement agencies, they are coming together, teaming up to, protect Public Transit for the super bowl. And ktvu fox 2alli rasmuss is in oakland now to tell us what commuters have been seeing so far this week. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dave. I wanted to let sal know that the feeling is mutual, but he is right, a lot of passengers so far have noticed an increased security presence on bart trains and bart stations all part of an effort leading up to the super bowl to protect people on Public Transit. Now especially at the embarcadero and west oakland stations, those are the busiest bart stations in the entire system. So some of the people we have talked to this morning say they have noticed more police in the area. And they told us they really appreciate it. And the tsa, as we mentioned, is getting involved. The transportation security administration, teaming up with bart, and San Franciscos muni and santa claras bta, to provide an increased security and Police Presence at stations and on trains. More officers at the stations, more officers upstair, not really on the trains but mainly here and embarcadero. I definitelies inned, throughout the bart terminals, and on the streets of San Francisco, i work in the city. The tsa is one of several federal agencies in the area working on this presuper bowl security. Representatives from the fbi, the department of homeland security, and even the u. S. Department of energy are in the bay area this week. The department of energys Nuclear Security administration is flying low altitude helicopters in our area. Now, this is video of the departments helicopters doing the same thing in the bay area four years ago, and back then, it was to measure baseline raidation levels in the ground, but this week, the helicopters are making their rounds for security reasons and looking for anything that could indicate a dirty bomb. We should mention all of this is being done as a precaution. Federal Officials Say there is no specific Security Threat but any time you have a major sporting event, with lots of people coming in from across the country, to attend, security is always going to be top of mind. What have we noticed here the request the west oakland bart station in terms of security . A bart Police Officer in a patrol car, patrolling the station and going through the parking lot and some early this morning, and then again about, a half hour ago. We havent seen any additional officers outside the station but we are outside and not on the platform and not on the trains, and based on what we have heard so far from passengers, this morning, they have noticed more police. Back to you guys. All right, ali rasmuss, hey thank you. The time is 6 35. At levi stadium, the groundskeepers are busy getting the turf ready for sunday. The end zones have been painted. The colors of the carolina panthers. And the Denver Broncos. And the nfl says work is on schedule. Now that turf as you know has been replaced many times since levi stadium opened in 2014. But the nfl says the field is actually one of the best they have seen. The ground crew says the pattern of rain and sun, it has created perfect conditions for grass growth. Now football fans are paying lots of money, lots of money to go to the big game. Stub hub says it sold two separate single seats for almost 28,000 each. Stub hub told us they are expecting to sell about 6,000 tickets at an average price of 6,000 a piece. The cheapest tickets, they have a face value of 850. But those are going for about three times that much. Health officials in texas have now confirmed for the first time that the zika virus has been sexually transmitted here in the u. S. Ktvu brian flores now in our newsroom with this new concern about the zika virus. Yes, pam, it is widely known that the vehicla virus has been spread through mosquitoes and while there are cases of zika spread sexually, experts say it is rare. Doctors and researchers though are scrambling to find a vaccine. In the meantime, there is a Public Awareness campaign, being launched on social media. This is a video recently released on facebook by founder and ceo mark zuckerberg. The company has teamed up with a brazilian nonprofit to get the word out, especially with expectant mothers. In the country and throughout latin america. Meantime, medical experts say an infected person who traveled back to the u. S. From venezuela infected another person in texas. Until now, confirmed u. S. Cases have been in people who traveled to latin america and were bitten by mosquitoes that carried the virus. The biggest concern though is for pregnant women who become infected because zika can birth defects in unborn babies. I would like to see a rapid test to take care of the fear that and women have enough to worry about throughout the nine months of pregnancy without worrying about the zika virus. It is a very low risk. At this point, researchers are not sure how long it will take to develop a test for the virus and they are scrambling to develop a vaccine. But he had say that could take as long as five years. Now according to the cdc, if you plan to travel to countries known to have the virus, you should use epaapproved insect repellent, wear long sleeves or pants and sleep under a mosquito net. Thank you, brian. 6 38 is the time. New this morning, california failing in its tempt to cut deaths and disease caused by tobacco product, according to the American Lung association. The annual report tracks policies on smokefree air. Tobacco taxes, funding programs, to prevent tobacco use, and providing help for people trying to stop smoking. California earned a failing grade on three of the four policies studied. But there are some local bright spots. 10 bay area cities and counties earned top overall grades. And the three biggest cities in the bay area earned grades of b. Time is 6 39. The chp is investigating a deadly crash last might, on interstate 880. It was a two car crash this was about 8 30 last night near the 238 connector in san leandro. And one driver died. And police say the other driver had to be pulled out of the wreckage and had major injuries. And southbound lanes were closed for more than two hours, afterwards. The investigators are looking for witnesses to figure out what caused that crash. A bicyclist is in the hospital, she was hit by a suspected dui driver, and dragged by the car.
