The race for San Francisco sheriff captured National Headlines because of the kates timely shooting. San francisco voters have voted out Ross Mirkarimi as sheriff. Hes going to be replaced by former chief deputy vicki hennessy. She won with 61 of the vote, almost doubling mirkarimis total. John robinson came in third. Hennessy was all smiles last night as she posed for pictures with supporters. She held a Victory Party at don ramons south of market. Wellwishers included mayor ed lee and former mayor willie brown. Hennessy is the first woman to be elected mayor elected sheriff in San Francisco. I was a trailblazer and i continue to be one. But i think its more important that i am a qualified that i am qualified than whether im a man or a woman. Attention that they want to consult a power what that means is getting rid of the independent elected sheriff. We specifically asked hennessy if she thought mirkarimi mishandled San Franciscos sanctuary city policy and the relationship with federal immigration agents. Hennessy says she has a different interpretation of the policy van mirkarimi. Voters in San Francisco also decided on several controversial housing measures. One became the most expensive political campaigning in city history. Fox 2s alex savidge is in San Francisco now to explain how voters weighed in on the issues of Affordable Housing. Alex . Good morning to you both. San francisco faces a tight housing market. Voters decided they did not want to place restrictions on shortterm rentals. Proposition f was probably one of the more divisive measures on the ballot last night. Seen as an antiairbnb initiative, but it went down defeat with 55 of people voting no. That measure would have limited home shares to 75 nights a year. Backers of measure f say the growth of shortterm rentals is putting the squeeze on those who are already struggling to afford living here in the city. San franciscobased airbnb spent more than 8 million trying to defeat the measure and opponents of f call this a victory for homeowners who they say rely on extra rental income to make ends meet. Prop f was a direct attack on these middleclass home shares who are using shortterm rentals to stay in San Francisco. They took it personally and stood up and they rightfully defended themselves. Over 2000 units have been removed from the rental market. Our very precious rent controlled rental market. Reporter San Francisco voters also rejected another hotly debated housing initiative, proposition i that would have frozen luxury Housing Construction in the citys mission district, but 57 of people voted no. Prop i would have placed an 18 month moratorium on any new market rate apartments and condos in the mission, but voters seem to have an alleged seem to have acknowledged the citys lack of Affordable Housing. They passed a bond measure that authorizes up to 310 million to build Affordable Housing. That needed a steep two thirds majority to pass, and 73 of voters gave it the green light. Mayor ed lee, a big supporter of proposition eight. He is promising all of those funds will be used to build and renovate about 30,040 Housing Units here in the city. Housing and homelessness with a very strong eye towards public safety. We cant be a successful city unless we are safe. But housing and homelessness are the two Top Priorities im going to spend a lot of time on. Mayor lee said he was committed to building and renovating 30,000 users of Affordable Housing during his next 4year term. Several cities asked voters to approve sales tax hikes to help pay for important city services. Looks like voters felt pretty generous. Hercules, voters approved measure b b. It will extend a half cent sales tax to help prevent cuts to Police Services and to pay for road improvements and youth and senior programs. In novato, voters passed measure c c 7227. It reduces the rate from have sent to a quarter cent. San mateo voters approved a sales tax extension, 7029, measure s extends a quarter cent sales tax for 30 years. Reporter pam, the Sheriffs Office is warning about a counterfeit version of xanax. They say that a teenager from watsonville took it at a party, had a bad reaction and then was on life support and then ended up dying on friday. Here is what that counterfeit version of xanax may look like. The Sheriffs Office posted it on its facebook page. Xanax is a Prescription Drug used to treat anxiety and depression. Deputies say a few days after the teenager ingested the first street version, there was another case, this time a 29 yearold man found dead in his home after he took what he thought was actual xanax. The Sheriffs Department is monitoring cases in other bay area cities. San francisco is investigating at least three cases where people were severely sickened after taking street xanax pops and possibly laced with opiate medication. Last month, seven High School Students were sickened after taking xanax at school. Investigators say that that incident does not appear to be connected. We know the names of 33 of the things. Authorities say most of them were vacationers from st. Petersburg, russia. Investigators are looking at whether that plane blew up in midair or if it crashed because of a mechanical failure on saturday. The planes tail was found 3 miles from the rest of the wreckage. There has been a new aftershock from a big earthquake that hit indonesia today. A magnitude 4. 8 that hit less than an hour ago. A local Government Official said a bigger quake, magnitude 6. 3, lasted for about 11 seconds and people were running out into the streets. There are no reports of injuries or damage yet. A plane crashed in eastern africa, the government in south sudan says 15 people died when a cargo plane that was made in russia went down just after taking off. It was headed to oil fields south sudan. About an hour ago the government announced as many as 41 people were killed but now the death toll has dramatically been reduced. American auto safety regulators are finding jeff any Japanese Company to cut a 70 million in connection with a massive a recall. The government is also ordering takata to stop making the airbag inflator is at the heart of the problem until the company can prove they are safe. Honda has dropped the manufacturer concluding that the company is the company had misrepresented and manipulated test data. Regulators have said the airbags are responsible for seven deaths and more than 100 injuries around the world. Holding takata accountable for its actions, we are imposing the largest civil penalty in nhtsa history. Investigators found the inflators takata uses in its airbags can send shrapnel into drivers and passengers in a crash. Takata has apologized for the problems with the airbags and says it will comply with the terms of the settlement. Some passengers on a Spirit Airlines flight are claiming Racial Discrimination after they were kicked off a flight at l. A. X. Eating domoic acid can cause headaches, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and in serious cases, memory loss, seizures, coma, it can be deadly. The recreational crab season is supposed to start this saturday, the commercial crab season november 15. We had a chance to talk to some of the people who work out here, one supervisor told us even though his company specializes in catching salmon, not crab, he says a bad crab season is bad news for everyone in the seafood industry. Our wholesalers that we supply buy crab also. So they tend to buy more when crab season more seafood overall . Yes. All the products tend to move much better when the season is very good. Reporter depending on what happens with future tests of the crab, the entire season could be called off. State fish and Game Department will hold an emergency meeting to decide if and when the season will start. But as you mentioned, the bay area tradition of eating fresh local crab on thanksgiving could be in jeopardy and also the Financial Impact as well to not only the crab fishermen fisherman who make their livelihood on the crab season but a lot of restaurants and markets who sell to customers as well. Caltrans planned to use underwater explosives to take down the main pier of the old spent on saturday, but experts say they became worried that the plastic around the explosive charges wasnt Strong Enough to keep from ripping as the charges were shoved into position. The implosion is now being put off until saturday, november 14, when about 600 charges will take down the pier in just six. Just six seconds. East bay arts High School Students walked 2 miles from their campus in heyward to the San Lorenzo School Board Meeting yesterday to address the board. The students say theyve been told at least 100 8th graders need to make east bay arts their first choice or it will be merged with another school. The students say thats not much time but they think its important to keep the school that has taught them how to think for themselves. Were not only a school but were a community. Along with amazing community, we have excellent academics. Along with support and guidance. Performing arts helps you develop as a person and helps you develop confidence. And your own way of thinking. Thats what our school is about. The School District says it will make a decision on the future of east bay arts at its meeting december 15. San jose police are now the latest to join a boycott of a movie that opens in theaters on Christmas Day day. That movie is called the hateful eight. Its directed by Quentin Tarantino. Police unions all across the country including new york, los angeles and philadelphia are boycotting the movie. They are worried about the violence against police that may be sparked by something Quentin Tarantino said at a rally against Police Brutality the last month. Im a human being with a conscience. We need to work with our community. Quentin tarantinos comments came four days after a new York Police Officer was killed in the line of duty. Last march, san jose Police Officer Michael Johnson was killed as he responded to a report of a man trying to kill himself. Its not the kind of Police Collaboration that happens every day. Police officers from walnut creek, pittsburg and new york city served an arrest warrant in pittsburg. They arrested 4yearold Lakisha Pettus of pittsburg on fraud and grand theft charges after a twomonth investigation by police in walnut creek and new york city. She is accused of stealing more than a halfmillion dollars of jewelry from stores in new york and california. And hes suspected of theft in other states. She was booked into the martinez county jail. Her bail was set at 1 million. Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker aldon smith expected back in court in santa clara this afternoon on dui and hit andrun charges. Smith pled not guilty to charges last month. He was arrested in august after he backed his car into another car, then left the scene. Smith also faces a vandalism charge for opening his car door and damaging another car. He was later released by the niners and now plays for the oakland raiders. While the raiders are enjoying success on the field, they hope recent wins will translate to a big victory off the field. The team has won two straight games and is talking about making the playoffs. In the meantime, oakland mayor libby schaaf is going to new york next wednesday to urge nfl brass to keep the raiders in the east bay. A major stumbling block is an apparent reluctance of the city to invest public money on a new stadium that could be as much as 300 to 400 million but mayor shaft does not seem also concerned.
