The sierra, much calmer than wednesday when a little system came by and fired up some thunderstorms. 60s, 70s, 80s to 90s near normal temperatures. We will start with our top story which takes us to san jose when someone opened fire on two offduty oakland firefighters, killing one and wounding the other. Yes. We have more with lee this morning. Reporter yes. The officers were attending an event offduty, Taylor Street east of japantown. The two firefighters were probationary firefighters. They were attending an event. As they were leaving they were confronted by a group of people then shot. Both were taken to separate hospitals. One 30yearold firefighter was pronounced dead at Regional Medical center. The other firefighter, 26 years old, had a single gunshot wound and is now in stable condition. After 9 30 police were called out to the 300 block of Taylor Street on a report someone had been shot. That is when they found the two firefighters with life threatening injuries. The men were rushed to separate hospitals. One of the probationary firefighters has died. Police say the suspect ran from the scene. As of midnight last night they still had not apprehended the suspect. They did end up closing down Taylor Street from 7th and 9th streets while police, k9s and a helicopter searched the area. Now, police say that still have the area cordoned off. We are told whatever the event was, oakland Officials Say the two firefighters left the event, and that is when they were confronted and shot. Oakland fire officials are coming out to san jose. A little later today they will hold something in the city of oakland for those two firefighters. And lee, at this point, we dont know what preceded the attack, if the two victims knew their attackers, if they had any interaction at all or if this was random. Is that correct . Reporter at this point i was talking to the oakland fire chief and she says the information coming to her was very preliminary at this time. All she gave me was what i just said. This is still very new to everyone. Oakland fire officials are on their way here to san jose. We know from a shooter on the scene ism industry, a photographer shooter on the scene i am sorry, a photographer shooter on the scene, he saw a procession of firefighters here escorting the men to the hospital. Al so, there will be certainly be something here later today and also in the city of oakland. Spain on high alert following the latest in a series of deadly terror attacks in the country. This map here shows the areas hit. The most recent attack happened overnight in a seaside resort called combreeze, just down the road from barcelona. They shot and killed five assailants. A woman died there from her injuries. Police eventually gunned down the men. They wore well made by fake bomb vests and belts. That car attack was similar to yesterdays van attack in barcelona when a white van jumped the pavement and rammed into pedestrians at the citys famed las ramblas. The u. S. Date accident announced they only know of one american that suffered minor injuries. The promenade was full of locals and tourists from all around the world. That is when i jumped off and ran as well. I didnt look behind me. I didnt see the bodies or anything or the driver. I caught it out of the corner of my eye, right behind me. Spanish Authorities Say so far they have arrested three people in connection of various terrorist attacks across the country. One have from morocco and another is from a spanish enclave in northern africa. The driver of the van remains on the loose this morning. A moment of silence was held in barcelona to remember the victims attacked. Among the mourners was the king of spain. The country will begin three days of national mourning. He was working at his restaurant two blocks away when a terrorist drove a vehicle into pedestrians along busy las ramblas. There was screaming and people running and running and look all over the place. It was scary. The streets are closed. You cannot even get on the freeway. You have to walk all over now. Reporter this womans entire family lives in barcelona. I am in shock. I am here far away from my friends and family. I am very sensitive if something happens to them and i am not around. Reporter she learned about the attack from Text Messages sent by her relatives. She called them and was relieved to learn everyone was in shock but uninjured. Her sister owns a Clothing Store near the scene of the attack. She is just one block away. She has to close her shop. People from the streets were running. They get into the shop and close the shop. No one can leave the shop until the police say so. Reporter the workers here say they received words of support from regular patrons. The folks we met here have always treated us amazingly. And again, we are here so we can give back a little bit. The workers say the spanish people refused to allow the terrorists to change their way of life. The culture is something we have in our hearts and in our souls. I am sorry for them. You can try 100 times, we are going to cry but you are not going to take our hearts. They have, from what i can tell, a hard closure in place and a sig alert. All the southbound lanes have been shut down as they try to deal with a huge mess out there. A semitruck caught fire. They are checking the overpass for potential damage that may have been done as a result of the fire. They are trying to get some of those lanes opened up. Southbound 680 at marshview to be aware of. And the bay bridge toll plaza there it is, traffic still fairly light heading into San Francisco this morning. Finally, a look here at the san mateo bridge. A 30yearold firefighters died at the hospital and a 26year old is hospitalized in stable condition. These are live pictures from the scene where an Intense Police investigation is still under way. Authorities say the probationary firefighters were leaving an event at a restaurant near san joses japan town when a group of people confronted them, someone opened fire and the shooter took off running. Taylor street between 7th and 9th have been shut down as authorities investigate what happened. Lee martinez is on the scene. She will have another live report at 6 00. In spain 14 people have died in two different terror attacks. A woman died a short time ago from injuries she suffered in an overnight attack in the coastal resort of cambrils. An audi plowed into a group of people. The incident occurred hours after a similar attack in barcelona where a van slammed into dozens of people at a main promenade there. 13 people were killed and about 100 others were hurt, including at least one american. Spanish investigators have arrested three people in connection to the attacks but the driver of the van has not been caught. And now the funeral for trooper burke bates will be held this morning in richmond, virginia. He was a passenger in the helicopter providing video to police of visits in downtown charlotteville last saturday. The funeral for lieutenant jay cullen is set for tomorrow. The man was acting bizarre and challenging people to fight. Police say they had no choice but to open fire. We learned the man may have  been upset about marriage problems. It is very scary to think that it could have affected a lot of people in this place. It affected my moms house, so, you know, it is very sad that somebody had to lose their life. Police say a crisis negotiator was brought in to try to calm the man down before the shooting. His name is yet to be released. According to a report released by the state attorney generals office, 157 people were kill bid police in california last year. 42 were civilians involved in the incident were hispanic. The time is 5 37. Two new fire stations are opening in the fire prone area of lake berryessa. Not only will it help save lives but it will save money. The thing about berryessa, there is one road in and one road out. Reporter this volunteer fire chief drives through this area and remember as time when there were two hopefullies lost. We went up over the hill into the berryessa estates. There was evacuations there. Reporter the fire charred more than 4,000acres and put more than 200 homes in the berryessa estates at risk. The intent was to house one fire engine which you saw back in. Reporter those residents are now getting a new neighbor, a satellite fire station with a fulltime engine for volunteer firefighters to scramble to. We all know that whether it is a fire or medical emergency, that inins count. Reporter it is a that minutes count. It is a no frill station, fast and fancy is the goal here fast and not fancy is the goal here. It can take up to 25 minutes to get an engine in from pope station ten miles away. Insurance companies have since canceled customers in the neighborhoods or jacked their rates sky high. With the fire station, hopefully the Insurance Companies will recognize that and it will provide some relief to the residents out here for their homeowners insurance. Reporter those insurance woes arent unique with so many large, damaging wildland fires in recent years. The rag fire burned 8,000acres on the other side of the lake. The 300 residents of Berryessa Highlands will get their own new station by the end of the month. For the volunteers that live in these Rural Communities and help protect them, it is a big relief having an engine close at hand. And the community, after waiting years, is ready, too. Now more on the train and how much a ride will cost. Reporter as of friday the 25th, smart train will Begin Service over its initial 43 mile stretch from santa rosa to san rafael. The currently free service will go half fare until labor day, after which full fares will apply. Though senior, students and the disabled will stay at half fare. Full fare round trips could run as high as 23 a day, but commuters can buy an unlimited monthly pass for 200. When you take into account what it takes to put a vehicle on the road, i think absolutely that is a fair price. I would love to take the train if possible, but it is really, really expensive. For me it is not as worth it to take the train as it is to drive. Reporter Weekday Service will begin at just after 4 00 a. M. To almost 10 00 p. M. There will be 34 trips on weekdays and ten daily trip on weekends. These are not just railroad tracks. Far from it. They are brand new commute capacity, desperately needed commute capacity on a place where the 101 during commutes is almost always sold out. When they leave their home they know what time they will get to their destination on the train. You cant do that on the 101. We will cut that in half while you are drinking la ta, using your wifi and whatever else you want to do. That will be a blessing if it reduces traffic on the 101 north. One complaint, not enough stops. I hope it works. But i know my wife will not use it. There are not enough stops.
