Reporter at 10 00 they had to call a work stoppage because the building was declared unstable. Its the front wall that is deemed to be unstable. They pulled everyone out and called the work stoppage at 10 00 last night, this is video of what they were doing last night. They were using excavators to gain access. Strawral engineers have been working Structural Engineers have been working with the deputies everyday. The chief said they have gone through 70 of the building. But the work stop will be in effect until at least noon. Thats when they will figure out if they can go back inside. The battalion chief talked about the risks and challenges they are facing. We cannot get under an unstable mezzanine or roof collapse without risk something falling on the firefighters. We want to be respectful of the families and the victims and also protect the lives of the firefighters. At 8 00, city officials will be coming together to come up with a plan to reinforce the building. It sounds like loan noon is the earliest they will be going back in. Investigators are still working to identify many people but we are learning more about those that have been identified. We have that part of the story. Its been painful for the families that have been notified. We have been able to collect pictures of some of those that passed away. People have left flowers and candles near the scene. 22 year old cash askew lost her life, david cline was another victim. Also nick gomez haul and sarah hoda. Friends also shared their condolences for donna kellog. Brandon chase also is lost, under his photo from facebook, he said, i am art. The firefighters also identified a 17 year old whose name has not been released. We are also hearing from people that managed to get out of the warehouse minutes after the fire started. We talked to two artists that lived and worked at the ghost ship. Both artists said everyone that lived there was trained on what to do if there was a fire. When i heard someone say fire, i went into my kitchen, i grabbed my fire extinguisher, i looked down the fall and saw 15 foot flames, i realized my fire extinguisher would do nothing for that. Another artist said she smelled smoke and saw an orange glow and she left as quickly as she could. She said when she got outside she knew that the people inside were trapped. The mayor of oakland, libby schaaf said right knew her focus is on the families who lost loved ones. There are many interviews being conducted right now but you have to understand that the scope of this tragedy is tremendous. We have many many witnesses to interview. We are in the process of doing that, we have been able to bring in extra detectives so that we can again, put as many resources on this and get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible. I was already getting dizzy and light headed. I was calling for help, it felt like nobody could hear me and the music was going, i went straight for the front door and i managed to get outside and other people were coming out. I started to call 911, a minute after i got out of the building, the power went out. We are getting a sense of what the warehouse looked like before the fire started. Welcome back, Oakland Police investigating two shootings near each other. No details about the victims, yet. The other shooting happened a block away in the 9700 block of sunny side. A suspect has been identified but not arrested yet. We do not know if the two shootings are related. Four people have been arrested in connection with another burglary at a Bay Area Apple store. It happened onuniversity avenue in palo alto. One of the people arrested was shaquin ferguson. Police also arrested erica white of oakland. They found an abandons suv in front of the store and a second vehicle across the street filled with stolen Apple Computers and phones. It appears that apple may be ready to get into the field of selfdriving cars. Apple said they were excited about the potential of Automated Systems in many areas including transportation and they said that Tech Companies should be included under the same federal regulations for testing selfdriving cars on public roads. The warehouse was old and it faulty wiring. The man that ran the place was derick ion. Some people that knew him described him as volatile. This is you tube video of the man people knew as derick ion, he built this Artist Community and rented out living spaces. There were 5 rvs parked inside of the warehouse where people lived. He is facing a backlash over his response to the fire. In a Facebook Post he wrote, everything i worked so hard for is gone, making no mention of the people that died in the fire. One of the tenets said the fire spread quickly and there was no time to escape. I was getting dizzy, i was calling for help but nobody could hear me, the music was going, i managed to get outside. Other people were coming out. I started to call 91 walkup and 911 and a minute after a got out, the power went out and everyone was trapped inside. Reporter city officials said derick ion did not get a permit for the party. As for the owner owner of the building, they leased the space to use as an artists collective but it was not meant to be a place to live. The Sheriffs Department said they are focused on recovering the victims and notifying the families. Thank you alex. We are also hearing from some former tenets of the collective. One described it as a death trap. Its a death trap. I feel more like i made it out alive. When i left, there was no fire and i still felt like i made it out alive, i felt like i was going to die there or someone was going to do. She said there was no heat and the building was filthy and there were criminals there as well. We talked to a man who said he knew many of the people at the party and he is devastated. It hurts, it just hurts. I have been in this scene for a while now, it just takes one careless mistake to make Something Like this happen, man, i do not understand. I do not understand. He also said he planned to go to the party himself friday night but he said he decided to stay home instead. Family and friends of the victims and even complete strangers have been coming together to mourn the loss, one group showed up to pray for the victims and the families and the firefighters that are recovering the victims. One woman with the group said she usually goes to Church Sunday but she came here to help the people that are mourning. I wanted to come and pray for the family members, the mothers that lost their kids, its a horrible way to go. I was missing a coworker, he is a freelance sound engineer for us and i believe he was working this party. Some people have been leaving candles near the fire. This is being called one of the worst disasters in the united states, its being compared to what many fire crews faced during 9 11. A firefighter who has been to many disaster scenes said the flames were so hot, it was hard to get out. They had temperatures up to 2,000 degrees. People were looking for a way to get out but could not find one. He said there is a long and dangerous recovery effort ahead. We now know the names of eight of the fire victims. They range in age from 17 to the middle 30s. The alameda Sheriffs Office said its still not clear how many people were in the building when the fire started. Search teams only have gotten through 70 of the building. Here is mayor libby schaaf with her thoughts about the artists communities. I have been passionate about lifting up the Creative Community that makes this the incredible city that it is, the issue of creating safe vibrant spaces for oaklands artist communities is a prior for me as mayor and of this community. This is work that has been going on for a long time. We are going to stay focused on accomplishing that in a way that makes sense for oakland and for all of the stake holders involved. So i was trying to show her by, you know, like, nudging her in the direction where i was going. He said he was also able to save his dogs before his living space filled with smoke.
