Overall a cool morning. Not a crazy breeze but it is a breeze out of the west, its a sea breeze or an onshore breeze out to livermore and northwest to san jose. This system low pressure, what we call an area of lower pressure settled in on the west coast and that has sent the temps down. Might bump up a few degrees. A few 80s well inland. 5 01, whats new, sal . Well, things are getting more crowded, thats for sure. We are looking at the tracy commute and if youre driving from tracy to livermore it is going to be quite filled in, especially on 205 but also as you continue on 580 and go over the altamont pass, by the time you get down to the livermore area you will see the traffic has recovered a little bit. Move along to some line of pictures. You will see the traffic here at the bay bridge toll plaza is not that bad. Looking pretty good getting into San Francisco. In san jose traffic is moving along pretty well. Thats northbound 280 on the right. It continues to look good all the way up into the valley. Now at 5 01, lets go back to the desk. We are going to win so big, thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. We are going to win so big. Thank you. Well, today is day 2 of the Republican National convention in cleveland, ohio. Ktvus alex savidge in the studio to tell us what to expect today and also, alex, the most talked about moment from yesterday. Yes, get to that in a second, dave. Todays theme at the rnc is making america work again. Yesterday it was making america safe again and featured speakers calling for increased law and order in the u. S. But it was a speech from Donald Trumps wife melania thats getting all the attention this morning. It was the first chance many delegates had to hear from Melania Trump. She made the case for her husband, calling him a man who can get things done. But two passages of her speech are strikingly similar to a speech by Michelle Obama that she made at the democratic National Convention in 2008 and this morning that has led to accusations of plagiarism. My parents impressed on me the value that you work hard for what you want in life, that your work is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. Barack and i were raised with so many of the same values, like you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond, that you do what you say youre going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you dont know them. Its unclear exactly who included the similar passages in Melania Trumps speech. She says she wrote most of the speech herself. The Trump Campaign put on a statement earlier this morning responding to the controversy over her speech. It doesnt address the similarities exactly but it says, quote, in writing her beautiful speech melanias team of writers took notes on her lifes inoperation and in some inspiration and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking. Melanias immigration experience and life shown through in her speech which made it a success. Here is a look at the speakers schedule for the Republican National convention. Speakers include new jersey governor chris christie, former president ial candidate dr. Ben carson, two of trumps children, tiffany and donald trump, jr. And today will feature nominating speeches and the role call of the states down on the convention floor. A lot going on today and a lot that people are talking about with melanias speech last night. Alex savidge, thank you. 5 04. On day one of the convention the republican delegates held a vote and approved their party platform. Some are calling it the republican partys most conservative platform ever. Social issues the platform rejects samesex marriage and transgender bathroom choices. The platform language says the cornerstone of the family is natural marriage. The union of one man and one woman. The uc berkeley Political Science expert says the platform is nonbinding so its not likely to have a Significant Impact on Donald Trumps policies. By allowing the conservative base to put that plank in, it appeases them and maybe allows them to stomach the nomination of donald trump. On Donald Trumps signature stand for building a wall on the border of mexico, the republican platform states that a border wall must cover the entirety of the southern border and must be sufficient to stop both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Hillary clinton is refusing to let republicans take over the battleground state of ohio this week while the g. O. P. Convention is being held in cleveland, she spoke yesterday at the naacp National Convention in cincinnati. Donald trump turned down an invitation to speak at that same event following the Police Ambushes in baton rouge and dallas, clinton urged the need to improve Race Relations in america. She discussed criminal Justice Reform but also promised to crack down on any violence against Police Officers. As president i will bring the full weight of the law to bear and making sure those who Kill Police Officers are brought to justice. Clinton walked a fine line in supporting Law Enforcement while not alienating the black lives matter movement. Next week Democratic Convention in philadelphia will highlight the mothers of the movement. They are woman whose sons women whose sons died in police custody. The women will speak on the second night of the convention. Our extended cover extends to our mobile app and ktvu. Com. There are updates on whats happening in cleveland and a blog that will take you behind the scenes of the convention. Just look for the political section right on our front page. Time is 5 07. New from overnight, Oakland Police are investigating a shooting near 12th and broadway. It happened about 10 00 but we have very few details except that police say there was a shooting. Reportedly the victim was shot inside of a car. That area was blocked off for hours for the police investigation. Hundreds of people gathered at a Baton Rouge Church last night to honor one of the Police Officers shot to death on sunday. Friends say 41yearold Matthew Gerald knew the dangers of military life and police work but he felt compelled to serve. I think our community is very strong, we are very united. Doesnt mean we dont have problems. We will address those problems as a community. The mourners also say they do not want people to judge baton rouge for a shooting that was carried out by someone who came in from another state. Police now say theres video showing the gunman targeting police and sheriffs deputies while passing by civilians. The shootings of police in baton rouge and dallas in the last two weeks says many Police Officers, of course, worried and concerned. One of our crews spent the day on a ride along with a veteran San Jose Police officer robert payne who has been on the force for 25 years. He says putting on the uniform has been harder lately and he wants civilians to know that police are people first. That means most are at the very least a little bit scared. He gets emotional when he says police know their job is still to protect the public. I dont suit up to come hurt people, nor does any of my partners. He says there has been an outpouring of support from the community, signs, blue ribbons and thank you letters keep showing up at police headquarters. He says the show of appreciation has been overwhelming and gratifying. It makes it a little bit easier to do his job during this very difficult time. Time is 5 09. I think youre going to see that the traffic is going to be a little bit slower than it was when we first started at 5 00 with you two guys anyway, you will see that 580 traffic is going to be slowing down on the tracy supercommute and the speeds are pretty low here on 205 down to 9 miles an hour, supercrowded as a lot of people come in from tracy heading west over to livermore, some people make their long commute from as far as tracy all the way to san jose area. We know theres a train connecting those two points as well. Right now its pretty slow. Go out and take a look at some live pictures. Macarthur maze coming around the corner to the bay bridge toll plaza. That looks good. When you get to the toll plaza there is slowing. Nothing major, about a 10 minute delay before you make it onto the bridge. Now at 5 48, i notice in some of these pictures that i see out here, San Francisco has a little bit of fog in it. Theres yeah, theres plenty to go around, sal, that is correct. Theres pretty good fog bank, not as extensive as yesterday but the lows are cool. There are upper 40s, low 50s and over the bay plenty of low clouds yesterday, every reporting station said cloudy, cloudy, even out so fairfield and sacramento low clouds made it. Thats not the case this morning. But still a good fog bank out there and it continues. Pamela, Pay Attention here. All right. Still trying for the blue marry yaz blue plumarias to bloom. Still no sign of a bud. Is that unusual . Well, yes. We do have something come common. Im not in hawaii so we try. Right, right. Thats the question we put out yesterday. Do you think we are seeing signs of an early fall . A lot of people say yes. Its a cooler pattern here, the lows are much cooler this summer than last summer by far. The water temps make a big difference. Little below average around the bay, 65, 75 and over by the coast for most, 60 to 65, still have hurricane darby out there, its expected, its barely holding onto hurricane strength moving into colder water expected to weaken to a Tropical Storm, still kind of drifting toward the big island but again weakening rapidly and then still Tropical Storm estelle looks to be wanting to be a hurricane but drifting to the northwest. Low clouds and fog. Up and down the coast, the fog bank, some breaks and holes in it. The onshore breeze three, seven at hayward. So theres still a breeze, cool temps, low 50s here for some, upper 50s, everybody is in the 50s, though, out to the east bay temps black hawk 55, walnut creek 53. 56 antioch. Not much of a difference, doesnt matter if youre far enough inland. 57 sacramento, thats a nice morning. 58 ukiah to 55 in monterey, lake tahoe 40, 51 tahoe city. Yesterday they were much warmer with that strong south wind. Phoenix 85, 86 las vegas, 82 palm springs, 60s l. A. And san diego. Thats the monsoon moisture that lit things up over phoenix and much of arizona yesterday. Its just not making it. To Southern California or to the sierra at all. Its been windy up in tahoe and truckee, thats the reason for our cooldown. Another piece of energy has to swing in, that will keep us below average on the temps probably for one more day. Low clouds, little mist in there, windy for some, not for all but a little breeze out there, 60s, 70s and some 80s, inland temps continue to be about five, 7 degrees below average around the bay about two to four and looks like tomorrow probably start to level off and it does look warmer, inland temps not so much the coast as we head into the weekend.
