Almaden between camden and rimmed so far not a huge commute because its so early in the morning but this will probably change. I want to move it up to a map in the north bay, this is a crash on highway 21 near kaiser road. A pickup truck there also left the embankment and ended up 100 yards off the road. Investigators in San Francisco right now are searching for the cause of a fire that destroyed a tire shop and also forced 21 people to run for their lives. It started yesterday morning just before 8 00 at the Rolling Stock tire shop at 16th and shotwell street. Heavy smoke and flames, shooting out of the roof. You can see this as far away as oakland and marin county. The flames spread to the Apartment Building next door causing smoke and water damage but no one was hurt. I saw a man knocking on the windows, shouting that the building next door is on fire. My dog woke us up. Lets go outside. More than 100 firefighters battled the flames and the red cross are helping those who were evacuated. In the meantime, 37 people in temporary housing this morning after a fire destroyed their Apartment Building. A cell phone video shows the flames as high as 50 feet in the air. Coming from the roof of the building on walnut blossom drive. The fire started about 3 30 yesterday morning. A firefighter suffered a minor injury but everyone in the Apartment Building were able to to get out safely. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Firefighters say it started somewhere in the attic. It is not considered suspicious. On the weekends they see the most writers of any station come through here, people coming in to San Francisco from other parts of the bay area, out of town, taking day trips to the city. The impression many of those visitors are left with is not necessarily a good one. One of the glaring issues here, the station has an unfinished ceiling which has exposed beams, pipes and wires, work got started on the ceiling a few years ago but it was never finished. Another problem, the elevators and escalators often smell like urine or maybe even something worse, but according to the San Francisco chronicle, part has put together a report on how to modernize the station. That study recommends 94 million in improvements, but bart plans to start out by putting about 30 million toward repair, so thats the initial amount of money that will be put towards repairs and that work will make the nations entrance is more inviting and less cluttered and will improve the lighting which can be uneven here inside the station. Alex savidge in tents in San Francisco. The city of San Francisco reportedly is checking the safety requirements for fireplace chimneys just in case of earthquakes. Whenever theres a big quake, chimneys often severely damage homes and properties. With a simple example of that in napa last summer including a teenager badly hurt when the chimney at his home collapsed on top of him. According to the examiner, one city report is recommending seismic retrofits especially for chimneys located near streets or sidewalks. At this point we dont know if retrofitting will be mandatory. Three people were shot, one person killed. Two others were hurt. Police say this may have happened inside a subway station and then spilled out into the streets. A Jordanian Police officer opened fire today on foreign trainers at a Police Training facility killing two americans and a South African before he was shot and killed by security forces. Traffic is going to be okay if you are driving across that bridge over to the peninsula. We have breaking news in san jose. Deadly crash being investigated near the almaden expressway. Fox 2s janine de la vega is at the scene. Janine, whats the latest there . Reporter sal, this is a very bad crash here on southbound almaden expressway. A pickup truck crashed into a tree there. You see behind me investigators are here at the scene, there are items strewn across part of the southbound almaden expressway. You can see the body of the driver is actually still inside. We are told the impact was so powerful that it through a hand truck into the air and landed 30 feet up in that tree that you are looking at. The accident happened at around 4 00 a. M. This morning in the southbound lanes near redmond avenue. The driver died on impact. Two male passengers were inside, one got out of the vehicle, firefighters had to use jaws of life to extricate the other passenger who was trapped. It took them 23 minutes to free him, both had critical injuries and were rushed to a local hospital. Police have shut down both directions of almaden expressway from camden to redmond but they opened up the northbound direction about 20 minutes ago. The southbound direction will remain closed because investigators are out here, they need to collect evidence. They are going to be looking into speeds and whether or not alcohol was involved in this crash. Thats the latest that we have now. Well continue to stay on top of this because the morning commute is about to start in the next hour or so. Right now, it is still closed, southbound direction, between camden and redmond. Dave . Thank you. Well talk to you later. Slick roads played a role in two crashes in simona county. A woman from dixon lost control of her car. She hit a Station Wagon near santa rosa yesterday morning. Police say she was just wearing the lap portion of her seatbelt. Her head hit the windshield in that crash. She was pronounced dead there at the scene. The driver of the other car and his 9yearold son suffered minor injuries. Also, the chp says a driver trying to drift on a wet road caused a crash near petaluma. The man, were told, purposely spun his tires but lost control and hit a truck headon. Both drivers and two passengers in the truck were taken to the hospital. We dont know their injuries. The body of a man was found in the waters off crown beach in alameda. East Bay Regional Park District police were called after the body was found about 6 45 yesterday morning along shoreline drive. Emergency crews pronounced that man dead at the scene. We dont know his name yet. The cause of death is being investigated. Family and friends of a six yearold louisiana boy killed during a Police Pursuit last week will say their final farewell. Jeremy mardis died after two city marshals fired into a vehicle that was being driven by his father. Its still not clear why they opened fire or why they initiated the chase in the first place. Police first reported that the father had a gun but investigators now say that was not the case. Funeral services for the little boy are set for later today. Six years old. He didnt deserve to die like that. This is a wounded community. This is some wounded families out there. A lot of hurt. I want to allow them the chance to heal. The boys father was also injured in the shooting but is expected to survive. The two officers involved in the shooting are now in custody and face charges of Second Degree murder and attempted seconddegree murder. New developments this morning in egypt. The investigation into the downed russian jetliner is now turning to the airport itself and the possibility that an employee may have played a role. Investigators are said to have heard a loud bang on the cockpit voice recorder just before it shut down. A russian team is now looking at the Sharm Elsheik airport and not just at passengers screening methods but at the employees there who could have smuggled a bomb on board. U. S. Intelligence agencies seemed to share that concern. Its a huge threat. We think its likely how this bomb got on this airplane. They can be compromised or bribed with cash or they could be read like radicalized to put a piece of luggage on the aircraft. The independent journal reports researchers at the tiburon center for environmental studies are looking at several sites along the marin coast. They say all of the sites show steep declines in the population of starfish. The disease causes their arms to waste away. Scientists believe its caused by a virus spreading rapidly because of Climate Change and warm water. The paper says the starfish are all along the west coast and as far away as china. Theres a new proposal to build what would be californias first offshore wind farm. Seattlebased Trident Winds has filed paperwork with plans to install 100 from floating turbines in San Luis Obispo county located about 15 miles offshore. The mercury news reports of these turbines be able to produce 1000 megawatts of electricity. Thats enough to power 300,000 homes. The paper reports electricity would be transported using a former pg e facility that is still connected to current transmission lines.
