Investigators will be out in west oakland this morning after yesterdays deadly fire that killed at least three people and put many more out of their homes. Yeah, the fire erupted early yesterday morning on san pablo avenue. Firefighters still searching for one person who is unaccounted for. Ktvus Jana Katsuyama has more. Reporter residents say they woke up smelling smoke and seeing flames. This video was taken by an oakland firefighter. As many as 100 residents made it outside waiting and watching in the cold. Everything started popping and just like it just was terrible. Its heart breaking right now. Some people tied sheets together to try to climb out a window. Others had made it to one of the two fire escapes. Firefighters said they rescueded 15 people. Two adults and two children taken to the hospital. He says he lives on the second floor next door to the apartment where he said the fire started. The guys lights went out and we gave him a big flashlight for his house where he went and lit some candles. And so when the fire started, they started on like a blanket. Two victims were found on the 2nd floor. The efforts made more difficult by debris. There were areas of the structure that collapsed. Thats whats making the search effort slow and difficult. A face based group that offered transitional housing for people coming out of rehab or who were homeless. Wires exposed to it. Theres toilets overflowing. The owners acknowledged there were problems. The place needed repairs, you know, and were doing the best. At the Evacuation Center at the First Presbyterian church the red cross worked to get people in shelters. One resident said the hallways and rooms of the Apartment Building had no sprinklers or fire extinguishers. If we had the fire extinguishers we would have put that out. Jana katsuyama ktvu 2 news. The building had reports of problems. Had a history of Code Enforcement violations. Now in addition to the lack of fire alarms and smoke detectors the inspection revealed violations for the sprinkler system, emergency lighting and exit signs, the use of extension cords and furniture that was apparently blocking interior space. I believe that oakland did everything it could responsibly. We held the line on not putting public money into stadium construction. We held the line on refusing to kick out the oakland as when it was unnecessary. San francisco search and rescue crews will return to baker beach this morning as they continue to look for a man who disappeared into the water. It all started at 7 00 last night. A 22yearold man was stuck on the cliff with a minor injury. Rescue crews initially sought the man in the water. The search was called off last night but crews are expected to return to the area today. Later this morning caltrans crews will remove the final steel trus of the section of the bridge. Believe it or not a bull is to blame for a three car crash. This happened about 8 00 last night. The chp says the bull wandered onto the freeway, caused six cars to crash. At least one person was taken to the hospital the bum was hit and killed. Another part of the east bay theyre still talking this morning about how a horse and a mule ended up running around on a freeway. This happened on interstate 680 in walnut creek. The ch. P says the horse and the mule bloke through a fence in alamo. Contra costa county Animal Services corralled the animals. They were safely returned to their owners and no one was hurt. A driver had a blood alcohol level five times the legal limit for truck drivers. This happened at 8 00 in the morning on northbound lanes of 101 there in san rafael. The accident closed three northbound lanes into well into the afternoon. The driver 55yearold richard long had a passenger. From los angeles and San Francisco to new york city, philadelphia and the nations capital. Sanctuary cities and counties have been spreading fast across the country. It has to start says u. S. Supporters of the sanctuary city designation urge the city council. Pittsburgh police told the crowd even without an official sanctuary city designation they dont ask the situation of the people they come in contact with.
