It is considered the largest multicultural celebration on the west coast. Carnival is up about the party but about neighborhood and community. I sat down with the executive reducer to talk about what it means to the people who call the mission home. To really understand carnivale you have to understand the neighborhood that posted it for four decades. It has the most amount of murals and in the whole world. You wont find this in any other neighborhood. The murals are everywhere. And each one tells a story. Reporter as you may imagine there is a mural depicting story of carnival. A dancer from brazil started in one of the first is on the schools. This year when the festival takes over for the 38th year the parade will roll by. It starts on 24th and brian and goes up to mission. But 4000 people packed the mission. They been a part of everyone. The first year a few artists wanted to do it and it was never the vision for it to grow the way it has been reporter he is an artist. Its made out of black sand. And a musician. Planning it is a fulltime job and he does not take it lightly. For the mission right now with all weve had 10,000 people the displaced. Carnivale is a statement. We are not going anywhere. It is a celebration. It has every latin american and caribbean country represented in the parade. Reporter as he walked azzarello neighborhood it was clear it is also an introduction to a culture. Its an interesting block because we in the Community Take care of each other. Reporter this neighborhood is rich in color and Art Institute for you can do typical mexican breakfast or american were asked. Reporter dont get him started on his low rider. They cruised every year in the parade. The Mission District is the center in mecca of low riding in the bay area. Reporter carnivale is about taking a stand. We do make a statement, a bold statement and we are not shy about it. It has been a challenge because many people have moved in a neighborhood that are harrison street they dont accept it or like it and we say you moved in here you want to culture. This is our culture. Reporter that it for you to gather are deep in the divide . Weve made a big effort to invite all the communities to come and learn about our culture. Reporter he says he hopes they come in. Those who venture to come here will explore and gain something beautiful. And they come back and bring other people back. Reporter he hopes they explore the neighborhood and gets to know the people. This opening is dedicated to a woman who passed away but she worked with public works. She was a low rider and was in the car club. Reporter every mural tells a story this is andy and the mural was painted and dedication. Industry over here was planted by the department of public works to honor her. He was someone who would feed the homeless. That community. Reporter and the challenges they face. The banks taking over peoples homes. Reporter get to know the neighborhood and you realize carnivale his mother the festival it is a museum, a history lesson, a call to action it is the states. Here at the mission we didnt have an opera or symphony so carnivale has become that institution that brings together everybody and the streets become the theater. Reporter the theater comes with it. When we come back we will talk about why it is so important for businesses. Were listening to the official song of carnivale. This year the theme of carnivale a longlived mother earth. The message small actions from us can bring big changes. Welcome back to bay area people. Hundreds of thousands of people phyllis street admission for can about and to his a big part of it. They can be taught for new businesses to prepare for big event and the nonprofit says it is essential to help her their new restaurant in San Franciscos Mission is a dream realized. The dream started with my family and started with my mom when i saw her when i was a kid she was working in a kitchen. The passion started there. We feel so excited and happy to be in the community. Because carnivale is a part of the mission they will be there to serve a favorite. We asked us where we are from we tell them el salvador. They ask for it. We will sell its, a tortilla. It has taken hard work, patience and dedication to get here but they say it is a Success Story for the nonprofit helps them grow. We exist to support women from communities of color and in the process of formalizing it. The support comes in large part from this, a large commercial kitchen on any given day you can walk in and find different entrepreneurs. Commercial space is extensive of the Business Owners can rent the space as needed and by the hour. We remove the barriers. These talented entrepreneurs who already have a fantastic products have a chance to enter the market and compete percent they also get assistance with Business Plans and strategies to access opportunity. It can be a long road. There are 49 in the program. The goal is to get them to economic selfsufficiency. The average time in the program is five years. She came to the us in 2001 she came to the us in 2100 was expensive and in order to help her husband and cover the rent she said she would start this restaurant and cooking in the kitchen of her home. She came here because rickety was too small. Things are done differently in mexico. She had to learn a lot. She learned and this month, nine years after she first found space she is ready to open a new joy. Her brandnew restaurant is almost ready to open and she gave us a tour showing us poor people will be working and eating. These are the stories that they love to tell from caterers to restaurants to package food. Big names come out of luck casino success comes one step at a time but every year for many of these businesses carnivale is considered a big step. Its a wonderful place that many entrepreneurs launch a business out of. Every carnivale will have a few entrepreneurs that will have a booth at carnivale and often times those are newer entrepreneurs. Its a great place to launch because you get realtime feedback and if you played appropriately make a little bit of money. It was impossible not to see their joy. For them this journey has been about two and family. When we were 18 we were talking about the sin we would like our kids to grow in the kitchen. My son is seven and after school its like a came to. A dream come true. We are proud of this place and thats why we are excited and happy. Reporter what makes you happy is all of the beautiful costumes and headpieces that are such a big the carnivale. We come back military what it takes to get them ready. Instruct this year the grand marshal of carnivale is the American Labor leader and civil rights activist who cofounded the National Farmworker association that became united farmworkers. You can talk about carnivale without talking about how visually s stunning it is to watch with all the beautiful costumes and headpieces. Sat down with the designer of dozens of christians and you will see that check that you will see. We appreciate you taking time to talk to us about all the elaborate costumes and headpieces. There is significance to everything. Every year every contingent you will see in the parade they have a theme and meaning, its like a deeper meaning that brings us together. The Committee Comes up with a theme every year but also individual groups come up with their own name and that is what drives us every come up with the colors and the materials we use can correspond with whatever that thing is. Every little detail is in from the color to rhinestone to the aesthetic of every cut you ensemble has a meeting. You are a to their, he made the costumes when you are very young he said carnivale is your event. Show us one of the months. This is a very elaborate headpiece. A mohawk style, the goal is i want them to be seen from 25 feet if it doesnt look good from 25 feet away and is the bigger and shinier. You have dancers, they need if they are. Was on the inside . This is my favorite moleskin. It will hurt. Its like shoes when you wear them. You can get the most comfortable shoes but your feet will be killing you. And the same with headpiece. You can do Little Things to make it easier. Although welding spots there is a joint you have to have at least not. I prepended preband. The back you need stuff there and this is the second hooks above here does it matter if i look forward or back, it will go anywhere. You get a lot of pieces that are topheavy and the buildup in the first gust of wind and its off the head. That will not work. I think a lot of times you can see things online you might want to purchase and the design is beautiful but it doesnt mean it was made to stay on your head. We all have different shapes hanford to challenge every year their attempt to make a headpiece and make sure it will not only state that will not make my head nom five minutes in. In every cancer is in the multiple hundreds of dollars not just for the material but for the labor. How many pieces will we see . This year with the group you will see about 50 or 60 that i made and then every headpiece you see in the contingent was designed by me and other people created after the design. And then with some other groups there is 20 or so pieces that i also worked with. We look forward to it. That conversation had you getting in on the fund now you can. We have rafael here and he is a sponsor of carnivale , the big transformation. It is a latin version of craigslist but targeted to latino community. We want everyone to know that carnivale is very important to us because it unites the latino community. You want to be involved and whats amazing is you added something new. People who werent there youll see them it will be amazing. That is what you see here, we are a gigantic photos on. We will have lots of repeats in the back and people can take pictures with the actual dancers from the parade as well as putting on cost to pieces, funny headdresses and so forth to take pictures and share with your friends on social media.
