This is actual the first election weve done this, we are tabulating our vote by mail ballots, 24 hours a day until well finished. Because this is an open primary, the top two vote getters will face each other in a runoff in november. Tonight california spoke. Tonight california spoke. And it said that we are a state that is union nighed, we have a clear purpose, our unity is our strength and diversity is our power. Lairs has been the front runner since starting her campaign. If she wins in november, she would become the second African American woman to serve in the u. S. Senate. Her opponent has a lot of backing in southern california, that is 10term u. S. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez who will be facing off against harris in the runoff. Sanchez says her record shows she is ready for the job and can hit the ground running if elected. Hopefully well see what ms. Harris stands for. I havent gotten an indication of that yet. I have 20 years of votes. Ive taken the very tough votes against wall street on the bailout, against the iraq war, against the socalled patriot act. I stood up under pressure for those votes. Both harris and sanchez are the daughters of immigrants. Lairs mother was born in india, and sanchezs parents are from mexico. The only state wide proposition is winning approval. Proposition 50 would allow lawmakers to suspend members without pay if they are being criminally investigated. Its a reaction to several scandals in the state. 76 voting yes to just 24 no on prop 50. Some san mateo voters had a problem in the booth. About 10 of their Voting Machines did not work correctly. Election Officials Say the machines were not coded properly, so they didnt produce ballots and that meant they had to use paper ballots. It was quickly fixed. It was an easy fix and we handled it in about an hour, hour and a half. Officials say the machines are about 10 years old and may need to be replaced. They plan to ask for funding in the next budget, but for now the system is still efficient and secure. The victim in the stanford Sexual Assault case says she is choosing not to come forward publicly, despite nationwide support shes received. Millions of people have read her letter which she red aloud to brock turner when he was sentenced to jail last week. The letter started a National Conversation about sexual violence. The woman issued a statement yesterday explaining why she wanted to remain anonymous. Two men were officially charged with the torture and death of a homeless man in San Francisco. A gardener found the body of 66 yearold Stephen Williams may 24th in the lake. Police say he was beaten and dunked in the lake over a period of three days. Prosecutors say the suspects wanted to deliver street justice because they believed williams had exposed himself near children in the park. Arraignment hearing continues this morning for the two Nevada High School students accused of killing a classmate and injuring another last month. The 16yearold and 17yearold have been charged as adults with murder and attempted murder. Another man who is due in court faces charges of accessory after the fact. The attack happened may 25th in an open space area. Authorities say the two students were lured to the open space area to smoke marijuana, and then shot and attacked with a machete. One student died on the scene. The other survived and called 911. Authorities are still looking for one remaining suspect, 19yearold. The two Fremont Police officers shot a week ago are improving. A spokesman with the Police Department tells us the officer who was shot in the head after pulling over a 44yearold man is listed in critical and improving condition. The detective who was the second officer shot is continuing to improve. The suspect led police on an all day manhunt but then found dead inside a fremont home he barricaded himself inside. A bomb threat forced an egyptair jet to land. An anonymous caller phoned in the threat to security agents in egypt. When it landed, it was checked for explosives, but Security Forces found nothing. All 118 passengers and 17 crew members resumed the flight to china four hours later. Three weeks ago it was an egyptair flying from paris to cairo that crashed into the mediterranean sea, killing all 66 people on board. The cause of that crash remains a mystery, though investigators speculate it was an act of terrorism. A few items from the plane have been discovered so far, but theyre still searching for the main wreckage. The controversy over transgender students in public rest rooms is an apparent recruiting tool for the klu klux klan. The flyers were left in an atlanta suburb. It included a phone number and web site claiming to be Contact Information for the klan. They use this transgender issue to actually try to gain people in, try to, you know, manipulate people and get them on their side, whatever their side is. This should not be tolerated in 2016, at all. At any level, in any city, in they state, in any subdivision. The Douglas CountySheriffs Department is following up on complaints about the flyers, but have not determined a crime was committed. The Olympic Organizing Committee says theres been a drop in the number of zika cases. Officials say no cases were reported during the trial matches. They say the finding suggests the environment is safe for the upcoming summer games, which kicks off in less than two months. But prevention continues in brazil. The doctor is about to specialize in end of life options for terminally ill patients in the bay area. He says he realizes some doctors are not comfortable discussing these options, so hes stepping in to help. He charges 200 for an initial consultation. And then 800 if patients choose to use life ending drugs. First i have to review their medical records. Then i have to examine the patient. Then we talk quite a lot about what makes you think that you want to have a prescription to help you die. Brittany maynard brought this issue to the forefront when she moved from california to oregon to end her life. The doctor says his phone is not ringing off the hook and does not want it to. Instead, he hopes over time physicians can handle these end of life choices for their own patients. A judge in santa clara judge prosecutors argued for a 14year prison sentence. The judge won reelection today because he ran unopposed. There is also a petition on change. Org asking to have him recalled. A stanford law professor has stoutered a formal recall effort for the judge as well. The judges sentence in the brock turner case was wrong and dangerous and makes women at colleges less safe. There are two state lawmakers calling on the judge to resign. Ktvu channel two tried to talk to the judge yesterday. He declineed and went into his chambers. Police chiefs from around the east bay are coming together to talk about issues facing officers. They met in walnut creek yesterday and heard from retired Philadelphia Police commissioner charles ramsey. Ramsey cochaired president obamas task force on 21st century policing. The chiefs talked about what they could do differently to get ahead of some of the controversial issues. They discussed Building Trust between officers and citizens. People want to trust the police and want to feel that the police are going to treat them fairly and thats what we call police legitimacy. That everybody gets a fair shake from the police no matter their status in society. According to the chiefs, more officers say they want more training on how to do their jobs better, since policing has become more complex. Brentwood Police Department is using song and dance to challenge officers in other Police Departments to walk the beat.
