This morning frustration and outrage are being aimed at a judge for the sentence he handed out against a former stanford student convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. Thousands of people are now calling for that judge to be removed from the bench. Ktvu fox 2 reporter janine de la vega is live on the campus this morning with a petition drive thats going on. Good morning. Reporter yeah, two petitions have been circulating around the internet on change. Org to remove the judge who presides over cases here in palo alto, and that is because the prosecutors had asked for 20yearold brock turner to be sentenced to six years in prison. The stanford swimmer was convicted of three felony accounts for sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman outside a Fraternity Party on campus. Instead of six years on prison, judge aaron peski sentenced turner to six months in county jail. He must register as a sex offender for life. The judge said that was appropriate given turners lack of history. Its prompted 150,000 people to sign a petition to recall the judge. Heres what a legal analyst told ktvu about that effort. And im not pro rape. Im not saying he should have been sentenced to xnumber of years. Am i surprised . Yes. But you dont attack the system this way. This is something that we live with. This is how our system is set up. Reporter this comes as a letter from turners letter to the judge went viral. In it he wrote why his son should not be given a harsh sentence. He says quote this is a steep price to pay for 20 plus minutes of action in a 20year life. The District Attorney has expressed his disappointment for the sentence but he did tell us yesterday that he doesnt think that the judge should be removed from his position. Alex. Now, 44yearold gerald via berea was found dead inside that home. The home caught fire after police threw tear gas inside but the Alameda County coroner reveals that an autopsy reveals he died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound to the head. The officers hes accused of shooting are still recovering in the hospital. Police say one is making good progress, the other remains in critical condition. Convicted Chinatown Association leader raymond ciao is apparently parting ways with his team of defense attorneys. One of whom is well known defense lawyer tony sarah. The attorneys filed a request to withdraw from the case citing irreconcilable differences but the lawyers told the examiner that they are trial attorneys and that ciao now needs a team to deal with his appeal. He was found guilty in january of 162 charges including murder, Money Laundering and racketeering. Police in patality are palo alto are looking for three people who stole more than 26,000 worth of purses. It happened last tuesday just before 12 30 in the afternoon at the neimanmarcus store at the stanford shopping center. Employees told police two men and woman grabbed five purses and then just ran. And in east an East Palo Alto school is scrambling this morning after these stole thousands of dollars worth of laptops and damaged school equipment. Heres a look at what teachers from Brentwood Academy found yesterday morning, paint spilled on the floors and chairs overturned but here was the biggest blow. 14 chrome books, several ipads and also a teachers laptop were stolen. It really hurts us on a deeper level because all of our kids come to school here every day to learn and for them to walk in in the morning and see six police cars out front and caution tape in a place where they always feel safe, it made them feel unsafe. Brentwood academys 540 students and Staff Members are still reeling from the loss. Based on the graffiti that was found at the school, the theory is that former students may be responsible. South San Franciscos intech and a drug company in new york have agreed to settle a federal lawsuit that accuses them of making misleading statements about a cancer drug. The two companies will pay 67 million. They are accused of making misleading statements to doctors about the effectiveness of their drug against lung cancer. The Justice Department announced that although the case is settled, theres no finding that either company was legally liable for the claims. A Parents Group is demanding the San Jose School district make high need schools a higher priority. Now, the group called packed parent leaders is asking for public input on a plan to provide more services to schools with large numbers of students who are still learning english, low income and minority students. The meeting will be held at sacred heart of jesus parish on Willow Street in san jose. It will be at 7 00 tonight, the group says students who have higher needs fall further behind when their issues are not addressed. A transgender person is accusing airbnb of protecting a host who allegedly discriminated against her. The transgender guest is a hollywood producer who says a minneapolis host denied her stay last year because the host felt uncomfortable. It suggests people sign up for its precheck system that has separate lines for pre check members. So far only 10 Million People have signed up for this program. American airlines is changing its frequent flier program. Carrier announced that starting august 1st flights marketed by american will earn award miles based on the price of the ticket purchased and elite members will earn even more miles based on their status level. Then starting in 2017 the airline will require customers spend a minimum dollar amount on travel on top of miles or segments flown to earn elite status. The change brings americans Loyalty Program in line with spending requirements already in place for customers of united and delta. Delta airlines making a major upgrade to their in Flight Entertainment offerings. Delta passengers soon will have unlimited access to deltas Extensive Library of movies, tv shows, music and more at no additional cost. The atlanta based airline announced the upgrade will be available on wifi equipped aircraft for both domestic and International Flights starting july 1st. After three years of delay, the irs has released a list of conservative organizations that were targeted in their applications for tax exempt status. There are 426 organizations on the list. More than 120 of them use the words t, constitution, patriot or liberty in their title. The release of the list was ordered by a federal Appeals Court in a Class Action Lawsuit against the irs. Now, irs lawyers fought the release claiming that it would expose confidential taxpayer information. Irs fought tooth and nail from having to turn over this list. Thats a huge difference, so the cooling continues not only at the surface but also aloft, west at oakland, west at concord, travis 31, gusts to 43. That is just nutty. West at 13 and west at 6 from napa to santa rosa, 50s on the temps or low 60s, a lot of these get stuck once the low clouds come in and not going to cool off anymore so some of thats trapped a little bit. 50s for many here, brentwood says 61 but i think they will even go into the upper 50s here, pittsburgh has 56, walnut creek, 54 lafayette and also moraga so everyone stuck at these temps. 56 at ukiah and 59 sacramento. They are cooling off as well. Low cloud deck has plenty of energy and plenty of low pressure systems which keeps enhancing it.
