One person has died, another is in Critical Condition after officers say someone ran over nine people who were leaving a nightclub restaurant. This happened just before two this morning. Along port chicago highway just outside of the restaurant. Investigators say about 50 people were standing in the parking lot when it happened. When we arrived on scene we had approximately nine to ten victims. Hit by a reckless driver in the parking lot. We have had some witness who said it was on purpose. Police say the driver is in custody. We are also following another developing story in the east bay. A number of businesss in downtown are cleaning up damage that was caused by violent demonstrations in support of baltimore. We have your back. We have your back. Close to 400 took part in the solidarity rally. Then a group of protesters splinters off. At dealerships along otto row. The damage caused by a night of protests has become a familiar and disturbing scene for people who own businesses there. The losses will reach tens of thousands of dollars but if they survey everything those costs could be much higher. And some of the biggest damage was scene at those Car Dealerships. We are live in oakland with a little bit of a closer look at that destruction. Reporter yeah. You know there is a massive amount of damage here on otto road. Tires were slashed, wind shields blown out by the windows, the windows to these dealerships were blown out. With in the past hour we have seen even more damage along broadway at the honda dealership a crew is already boarding up for the windows used to be and we are told about 21 windows there were smashed out because they are so big they can cost about 7,000 to replace. Are you looking at 140,000 for that one dealership alone. This work is going to continue. Not only at honda but at gm and other dealerships here along broadway. We want to say this damage was caused by a minority with in the group of about 400 that marched last night through the streets. They met at 9 and the broadway. Turned and headed to telegraph. Their purpose was to protest police brutality. Many who were participating and were not a part of the violence were just upset by what they saw. Even people who did not participate last night are upset as well. One man we talked to just decided to take a walk through this area to see the damage and said its frustrating. We need people to stay here in oakland, to keep the jobs here and make the city better than what it is. Doing this here doesnt help bring anyone back from death. Its not productive. Its crazy. Reporter and another live look here at the window being smashed out at a car and there was some grafitti here. We are told a number of fires were set. When we talk to one of the employees of one of the dealerships they said the earliest they would likely open was on monday. The same for a paint store they said they had to assess the damage and wont open until early next week. We hope to get another update in the next hour from police and the mayor herself. They are holding a press conference at nine and we will be there. We will bring you the latest. Look forward to that. Last nights demonstration capped a full day of protest across the bay area. We have some breaking news for you right now. Youre taking a live look at our press conference. Thats oakland mayor libby shaft talking about last nights violence. Police have been out all night helping to secure those businesses, helping to clean up and restore a sense of order and beauty to our great city. Our Business Assistance staff have been out providing assistance as well to businesses that were affected. So we are committed to continuing to celebrate the greatness of our city to support our Small Businesses to assist in the repair to the damage that was done last night and to also continue to follow up and hold the people accountable who caused this damage, this vandalism, these cowardly people that use the cloak of night and large crowds to commit this type of vandalism. Im going to ask the chief to talk about what went well and what did not go as well as planned last night, and then we will be available for questions. As the mayor stated, we have two jobs when it comes to public safety, and the first being the protection of human life, and the second being the protection of property, whether in a crowd control scenario or in regular everyday Crime Fighting we always prioritize human life above property, and as the mayor said we do feel that we did a good job yesterday as far as protecting human life. However, obviously it did not go well in regard to protecting property. Ive met with my command staff last night and will do so again in the coming days to carefully analyze our response last night and learn what lessons we can and make needed improvements to prevent the type of destruction that we saw last night. Prior to yesterdays events, the oakland Police Department had responded to 12 unpermitted demonstrations so far this year between november 24th and the end of last year we responded to 26 different demonstration events. We do get a lot of experience at this and most of them go very well without the destruction we saw last night or without injury to anyone. Yesterday our department responded to events throughout the day beginning at 5 30 in the morning and obviously culminated in the marchs that occurred last night. We had officers assigned to each of these events including the first friday event along telegraph avenue. However, last night as night fell, a group of approximately 3 to 400 people began marching toward the Police Administration building and then towards china town, that march very quickly became ugly, and beginning in china town, there were windows broken. Thats okay land police chief talking about the march from last night as well as the destruction that was that happened after that march. 3 to 400 people marching in the downtown area and a group splintered off and started smashing windows and spray painting windows. Saying we did a good job protecting life but not property. Now obviously the analysis will go into kind of what they did, what they need to do next time. Cowardly people using the cloak of night that is how the mayor summed up the people responsible for the vandalism. Obviously a big day of cleanup ahead for the businesses who were hit by the vandals. We have Christina Rendon at that press conference and were going to check back in with her in a little bit. Your time now is 9 23 and well be right back after this break. A little racing song about a romantic story, the eyes of thoroughbred racing. The Kentucky Derby getting underway just a few hours from now, mid afternoon, 3 30 our time out here. This year marks the 141st anniversary of the race. Now, besides the action out there on the track the next biggest thing about the derby some can say is the hats and we wanted to get in on the fun. The people at the Stockton Stockton sent us a few derby style hats. And look whos on the television screen. I know. I just i like try on hats. I just couldnt decide which one i liked, so you know we figured wed ask you guys. Three options were on facebook. Rosemary you take the leftovers. I like it. Mikes in on it too. Hes got his hat. I love watching, you know, all the people show up, and we talk about what it i mean its an event. Those clouds are going to hold tough along the coastline for today. We will be partly to mostly cloudy there. For the rest of us around the bay and inland were going to be mostly sunny. Some of you are inner east bay areas woke up with the sunshine. It is more widespread, at least the cloud cover where we started. Here is a still shot. You can see, again, the clearing and the thinning of those clouds. As we get into the second part of our morning, temperatures will begin to rebound. We are not going to warm as much as we did yesterday. Temperatures are coming down, especially for our inland cities. Around the bay and along the coast we actually cooled it down yesterday. The onshore breeze and the fog came back strong. 54 in Half Moon Bay right now. 55 in San Francisco, and weve got 60s in areas like concord, walnut creek and livermore. Our onshore breeze to strengthen in areas through fairfield. Theres an indication that we have cooler weather coming your way. For most of us we started out cooler than where we were yesterday morning this morning. After highs for today, low 60s in pacifica, 64 for San Francisco, upper 60s expected in areas like oakland and hayward, if you are going out to watch the horse races at golden gate, you will have upper 60s in the forecast for the afternoon. Low 80s in the forecast in areas like antioch, livermore, but some of those spots hit 90 yesterday. Its going to feel pretty good. Dont forget the Golf Tournament out there. Thanks roads mary. What started as a pain in her arm, and then 6yearold miley mccarys family got the devastating diagnosis she had cancer. It has been an emotional few months but they say support has been very overwhelming. Mileys father is an oakland firefighter and claudine has the story of how his firefighter family is now coming together to help. The game is all about getting the puck in the net, but these hockey players are more focused on that little girl watching them through the glass. I like skating. You do . 6yearold miley sometimes just goes by miley miley, and it takes just about a half second to see why. My daddys a little bit funny. She smiles even when she talks about the cancer that could take her arm. Back home its like something fighting your body so we had to get medicine to fight it back. Doctors diagnosed miley with ewing sarcoma, a bone cancer. The world just starting spinning and really hasnt stopped. The only way you can describe it is a sledge hammer to the stomach. It just knocks all the wind out of you. You cant describe it. You really cant, words cant describing it. They also struggle to describe the support theyve gotten. Mileys father is an oakland firefighter and when miley was diagnosed he asked for a few days off. That was on a friday. I called them sunday morning, i said did you get those three shifts covered. He said well see you in may. They got three months of shifts covered. Within 36 hours we had a game and that was eight weeks ago. A game of hockey by firefighters who have held Charity Games before but who say this one is different. I work with scott a long time now and it makes it personal. The fact that were able to help them out t makes a big difference. Next saturday may 9th they will come together for this little girl. We get to ride a pink fire truck. Thats very cool. Theyre hoping to fill this rink to its rafters. We want it to be packed, crowded. You know, we want it to be where youre talking to the person next to you and you can hardly hear what theyre saying. Theres people from 20 different Fire Departments gathered together for this. There are tough days ahead, but theyll never be alone. Just going to beat them out with a hockey stick. To this day im still emotional about it. Thats your baby. Yeah. Thats your baby. Their baby only has to look through that glass to see the love that surrounds her. I mean theres really no words for having like a big hug, having that just huge family. Amazing. Wow, that is amazing. The family lives in vacaville and vacaville ice has donated the ice time for next weeks hockey game. Money raised will go towards mileys care. Weve posted links to her online fundraiser on ktvu. Com. Think about how powerful those families, are. The mccare rays and the firefighters. Well see you in three months, take care of your family. Thats very inspirational. The support doesnt end there. Claudine is with a group of open firefighters preparing to do even more to show miley how much they care. Thats right. Check it out up here on our third floor roof, little area here. Weve got a whole group of oakland firefighters and behind them we have the barbers who have come out here from the charles blade barber spa donating their time to help out. What are they doing . Your moms going to help you out. I want to ask you, what does this mean to have these guys coming out here and doing this as a show of solidarity for miley who is just a sweetheart. Are you kidding me. Shes so sweet. Smiley mile lee. You guys are going to start off. Go ahead and get started. I know it takes a while. I know for you guys really no question when you guys heard about this story you wanted to be involved in this right . Oh, yes, yes, were glad and honored to be part of this ordeal for this young lady and were happy that the firefighters actually donate to shave their heads off. Get do it. And jim youre in front of me. Tell me any problem getting any of these guys to sign up and show up here and come get this done. Not at all. All these guys stepped up for this little girl. And what do you want her to know when she sees all you guys out here in terms of this big firefighter family . Shes supported. Shes our little girl. I dont think theres any doubt about that. Okay. Thank you so much. Its going to take a while. Weve got a lot of guys out here getting their head shaved. Its going to take a while.
