We are getting more details this morning after a deadly fire in san jose. Ktvus janine de la vega is outside the home where a body was found and is now talking to neighbors about what happened. Janine u just got a hold of some new cell phone video . Reporter yes. And it is dramatic. You can hear people. They were screaming because they knew that there was a man trapped in there and they were trying to save him before the firefighters arrived. We spoke to them and they tell us that they ran up here to the back of this home where you can see all of this damage. They could hear his cries for help. The fire was too intense. They couldnt get to him. Again you can see this aftermath of whats left of this home. Now lets go to some video that we have. Fire officials tell us they received this 911 call before 7 30 last night about the fire at this home near story and mclaughlin avenue. Before they arrived neighbors were spraying down the house trying to save it. When firefighters arrived a man told them he was in a garage when he smelled smoke. Somebody else was left in one of the back bedrooms. Firefighters did a search while knocking down the fire and then made the discovery. Heres how a neighbor described everything. We are in our garage and heard a bunch of commotion. We came out and saw the a house on fire. We tried to save the guy that was there but it was too late. He was screaming. We couldnt help him. It was too late. Reporter once the mans body was found police helped block off the neighborhood so an arson investigator could look into the cause. We are waiting to hear about that and what was the result of that investigation. We did ask the Coroners Office if it appeared the man died from the fire and they said yes. Thats what it appears, even though an autopsy hasnt been done. But there didnt seem to be anything suspicion about the extend of his injuries. Neighbors tell us the man who owns this home is a retired police officer. So its really unclear if he was home at the time. The neighbors mentioned he rented some of the rooms in the back of the home. So they think that the deceased may be a renter. We do not know at this point because the Coroners Office has not released that mans identity. We are working to get that cell phone video for you within the next hour. Thank you, gentleman. You are in San Francisco to show us how officers can get stuck in gridlock during an emergency. Reporter the Public Safety building is here in the middle of the bustling Mission Bay Neighborhood and traffic tends to back up in front of the building on third street. That is especially true on game days at nearby at t park just a few blocks away. Let me show you the scene following yesterday afternoons giants games. With cars at a stand still towards king street, in the middle of that backup we saw a number of San FranciscoPolice Officers trying to leave the new he headquarters and the southern station here. Now, the problem is that officers, if they pull out of the falcon facilitys underground garage, can only make a right turn sending them streit into gridlock. We saw some cars waiting in the turn lane and turning around and looking for another way out of the mta admits the traffic situation certainly presents a challenge for police. A Department Spokesman tells ktvu it wont interfere with officers responding to emergencies. Our officers are constantly going out on patrol, going from one call to another call. For the most partner not going to be inside the station. Reporter on top of that, officers schedules are staggered to avoid long lines of Police Cruisers wait to go leave the station. Had is 101 in San Francisco coming in from south city and thats because of an earlier crash near candlestick exit. Most of the slow traffic is northbound on 101. The best thing you can do, i think, is to come through daly city and go into francisco doing that. Southbound 101 traffic is going to be busy. The crash is gone. It was there for long enough that the traffic is still going to take a while to recover. Again 280 is better than 101 at this point. San mateo bridge not bad. 880 oakland and hayward a little bit of slow traffic heading south towards fremont. We also had traffic on the sin ole grade as well. The toll plaza of the bay bridge. We had an earlier truck stall on the span. Thats gone. Traffic is backed up for 30minute delay. In san jose northbound 280 up to highway 217 880 that is backed up. A mailman from florida who made a really unexpected delivery in washington, d. C. Is in a whole lot of trouble after flying his gyrocopter on the grounds of the u. S. Capitol. Fox news corner doug la zater outside the capitol. Reporter if you need. Reporter this place was loaded with tourists. This gyrocopter zoomed around the Washington Monument down the length. National mall here. It got to this point. You see where the tourists are there taking pictures, the statue of grant. This passed over the statue and got to the end of the mall. Thats where the u. S. Capitol is. If we zoom in you see there is a Little Orange traffic cone there marking the spot where this gyrocopter sat down. You can hear the stunned tourists as that tiny helicopter, a gyrocopter, flew right over their heads on to the west lawn of the capitol. I said, oh my goodness, they are using drones with men to bring the mail. Thats how google is going to deliver the mail. Reporter doug hughes from florida was quickly surrounded by u. S. Capitol police. If all of this looked like it caught capitol security off guard, maybe it shouldnt have. Hughes was pretty open about his plans. I am going to land on the capitol mall in front of the capitol building. Reporter that was hughes talking to the Tampa Bay Times in advance of his flight and telling them that as a postal worker he intended to fly to washington to deliver letters to all 535 members of congress depannedding Campaign Finance reform. He called at noon as he was on the runway about to take rough. Reporter in fact, the a Tampa Bay Times reporter was outside the capitol to watch it happen and he says hughes wasnt exactly under the radar, so to speak. He wanted the alameda to know. He wanted the authorities to know. He was live broadcasting this. The bomb squad determined that it was no longer a threat. Why werent authorities prepared for this . The secret service did speak to hughes back in 2013, but that appears to be it. He may face federal charges now for airspace violations at the very least. But the authorities here will face perhaps a larger question. Why this seemed to catch nearly everyone unaware. There are going to be some familiar questions here that we always hear in the wake of incidents like this. Federal agencies communicating well enough with one another to talk about existing threats that one agency knew about and maybe another one didnt . As for mr. Hughes, he is going to face a whole slew of charges, no doubt. Its against the rules here to fly a kite on capitol hill much less land an aircraft. Yeah, i am sure he will be facing serious challenges. Thank you, doug. It is 7 22. We are official on on round two of royal baby watch. Tell me, whats on your mind . It sucks. Okay. Okay. Tension on American Idol last night. What it was about and now esclated with a contestant approaching the judges table. Welcome back to mornings on 2. There is a lot of buzz this morning around American Idol. But not necessarily about the performances. Instead, everybody is talking about the heated moment between the contestant Quentin Alexander and the judge herrick connick jr. Now, he is known for his style. He has a unique twist for his songs. Last night he sang a song, are you going to go my way. Its a Lenny Kravetz song. It was his reaction to the appearance of his two Close Friends in the bottom two that stole the spotlight. Tell me whats on your mind . This sucks. Okay. What sucks . Tell me what sucks. We have two of the best vocalists, my best friend is sitting over there. This whole thing is whack. I am going to shut up right now. Oh, woi. As he walked off the stage you hear judge Harry Connick jr. Say i dont understand those comments at all. If its what whack, then you can always go home because idol is paying a lot of money to give you this experience. To say this to this hand is feeding you right now i think is highly disrespectful. This is the bond, you know . When i said that this was whack, i wasnt saying this was whack. You said this whole thing was whack. I thought thats what you meant . Yeah, yeah, i get it. Whats whack . Its a competition. Now, after a little back and forth here, alexander went and sat down. The competition continued on American Idol. After the show alexander says he may have been misunderstood, but he wouldnt change anything he said. Now, in the end joey cook, alexanders best friend, joey was eliminated. We are going to start off with the south bay. I want to show you some things in san jose. As we look at the freeways, highway 101 is going to be slow as you drive through. The traffic is going to be slowing down. In fact, we can show you a map of the area and you can see the traffic is going to be slow as you drive through. I also want to mention that the capitol corridor train, train number 524, had an equipment problem. It could be at least an hour delay. Now, they said an hour at first and then they said 42 minutes. The bottom line is train number 524 is running late by lets just say 45 minutes and split the difference. You might want to take on that if you take the capitol corridor between san jose and sacramento. Lets move to live pictures now. I want to show you the bay bridge toll plaza. A live picture, i should say. Its backed up to the macarthur maze. Lets go back to the desk. All right, sal. Well, some very prominent catholics are making a very public call for the pope to remove the archbishop of San Francisco. This comes after months of controversy over church doctrine. Especially at catholic schools. Ktvu fox 2s Tara Moriarty joining us live. You are in San Francisco to tell us how this group is getting the word out. Good morning, tara. Reporter good morning. Its 100 people that signed this letter to the pope, including the father of new England Patriots quarterback tom brady. This is the front page of the San Francisco chronicle. This is the back side. You can see this is full actual this is actually a fullpage ad. It is a request, holy father, please provide us with a leader true to our values and your namesake. Please replace archbishop. They say he has fostered intolerance. He said he forced them to sign a morality clause. They say his purr to change the faculty handbook is mean spirited and they are angry about the pastor that he picked who they believe marginalizes participation in the church by banning girls from altar service. We spoke to a teacher who says she has been appalled and ashamed by the archbishops actions. I was thrilled to hear that they took out a fullpage ad because i am equally appalled at what the archbishop has done. I dont understand why the pope, who is moving in a progressive direction, would allow somebody who is moving in a regressive direction to lead the Catholic Church in San Francisco. Reporter now, the ad draw a Swift Response from the archdiocese saying, quite, the signors presume to speak for the Catholic Community of San Francisco. They do not. The world war ii veterans are going on whats called an honor flight. Ktvu fox 2s brian flores is at sfo. I saw you talked to some of these veterans. What are they saying about this trip . Are they excited about it . Reporter they are, tori. I am excited for them. It is quite an honor to meet our heroes, our veterans of world war ii. Many thought this day would never come to visit the world war ii memorial that opened up in 2004. Today that changes. 25 will be leaving sfo about a couple hours from now. They will be flying on Virgin Airlines it to d. C. Not just to visit the world war ii memorial. How they are able to fly for free is through honor flight. It has a local chapter here in the bay area. And simply through fundraising they were able to pay for each of the veterans flights, meals, hotel. About 1,200 a person for our veterans to see the memorial. For many of them they thought this day would never come. I feel really honored to be a part of this trip and being in the service. At the time that i was in the service, maybe i wasnt too excited about it. But looking back i am proud that i was in the service. I was able to help my country and do my little part. And i am very proud to be in a navy veteran. Yeah, i have seen most of the memorials back there. But i havent seen the Navy Memorial or the veterans memorial. Reporter and the two people you just heard from, they are brothers. They were both in the navy during world war ii. One of them served in the pacific aboard the uss california. As for honor flight to make this happen its simply through fundraising and donations. And there are plans for another honor flight for world war ii veterans sometime around june or july timeframe. And there are plans as well in the years to come to also send korean war veterans as well as Vietnam Veterans to see the memorials as well. So just a Great Program for many of our nations heroes. Then someone tweeted me yesterday that some schools start their spring break on april 20th. Its all over the months. But we dont have as much of it today. Thats for sure. Lets look at some of these pictures we have for you. We will start off at the bay bridge toll plaza. It has been very slow this morning. We had an earlier truck stall on the upper deck of the bridge. That was cleared an hour and a half ago now. The traffic has been slower than usual as you approach the bridge. About a 30 to 35minute delay. We are hoping its going to clear out a little bit. Lets take a look at interstate 880. Northbound 880 is beginning to slow down. I have been looking at this camera. Its just a little bit windy. Its almost imperceptible but you see it moving from side to side. This camera is mounted on a building near a coliseum. Its possible it could be breezy there. Way to put you on the spot, huh, mark . Anyway, northbound 101 in san jose and 28 0 and 17 the traffic is going to be a little bit slow now. This is really the heart of the south bay commute. Look at 101. The road sensors are fired up red. Its a tough time getting into mountain view. I am not seeing spring break conditions at the south bay today. 7 48. Hello, mark tamayo. I was not prepared to talk about the wind in this segment. Sal is standing by with an update on the roadways. Good morning to you. We have a new crash reported southbound 101 in San Francisco. Our camera is looking at 101 and you can definitely tell something is going on southbound 101 at caesar chavez. An accident reported about ten minutes ago. The traffic is backing up. This could affect the traffic coming off the bay bridge westbound as you get into the city and that could have an effect on the entire bay bridge commute. Its already slow because of earlier problems. Now there is that crash. 280 is a decent alternate route for you instead of heading on 101 out of the city. Remember 101 is also busy northbound out of south city because of an earlier crash at candlestick. Moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge, it is backed up out to about the macarthur maze. Thats too bad because it just started looking normal and now we have that problem on 101. I really hope thats cleared soon because it could go right back up to looking terrible again in just a few moments. Lets talk about san jose. All of a sudden we have a lot of slow traffic on 280, 101, 85. Some people have been saying, yeah, you know, spring break is over. It looks like it. We dont have a lot of light freeways. Lets go back to the desk. Thank you, sal. It is a tough morning for people in one san jose neighborhood after they witnessed one of their neighbors die in a fire. Now firefighters are trying to figure out what may have started it. Ktvus janine de la vega live from san jose with more on the investigation and the new video of neighbors trying to rescue the man. Janine, i imagine those neighbors are really shaken up today . Reporter they are, tori. They tell me that they had a hard time sleeping last night. They felt helpless because they heard this man screaming for help. He was in one of the back bedrooms here. And you can see there is charred remains. The windows are boarded up. The flames were just too big and they couldnt save them, and neither could firefighters. Is he in there . Yeah. Hes in there . Are you serious . Get him out reporter here is cell phone video showing the smoke and neighbors frantically running around trying to help the man trapped inside this home near story road and mclaughlin avenue. This happened at around 7 20 last night when one of the men called 911 saying he was in the garage when he smelled smoke. He escaped but knew there was someone still left inside. One neighbor told us it was heartbreaking hearing this man yelling. We heard like all the commotion. Then we saw my husband saw the fire and then we ran next door and he heard him like screaming and stuff. So there is all kinds of people trying to help him get out. It was too late. Reporter firefighters arrived and searched for the man while they knocked down the flames. His body was found in one of the bedrooms. An arson investigator came together with evidence to help determine the cause of the fire. Neighbors say they did not hear smoke alarms going off when the fire was burning. Actually, we didnt. There was no smoke alarms. I couldnt hear no smoke alarms. Reporter we havent seen any sign of the homeowner yet. Neighbors tell us he is a retired police officer. Its unclear if he was home at the time. We are told that he used to rent rooms here in the back. But its unknown if the man who died lived here, since his identity hasnt been released yet. The coroner says that it should take some time because this man was badly burned. Tori. Thank you, janine. Six minutes after 8 00. New this morning in San Francisco repair work could start today after a car crash ripped a fire hydrant from its foundation. Thousands of gallons of water gushed out of the gaping hold at gary boulevard and 11th avenue. The wreck happened around midnight. There will be a special ribboncutting ceremony in San Francisco for the new police headquarters. Its part of a quarter billion dollars safety cam must in the Mission Bay Neighborhood. However, Police Officers may vaughn into a serious problem may run into a serious problem during injuries. How Police Response times could be slowed down. Reporter yeah, thats the concern here. Good morning to you, dave. As officers leave the new Public Safety building here in the Mission Bay Neighborhood they head right out here on to busy third street and right into trouble potentially. Here is the issue. A few blocks down there at t park. And on game days the traffic on third is bumpertobumper. Let me show you the scene from yesterday after the giants game ended in the afternoon. Cars were at a virtual stand still heading towards king street. In the middle of all that backup a number of San FranciscoPolice Officers trying to leave the new headquarters and southern station. Now, the problem is officers can only make a right turn onto third after they pull out of the garage here. We even saw some squad cars waiting to make a right turn and turning around and giving up and looking for another way out. The mta says it presents a challenge for police, but a Department Spokesman tells ktvu that he doesnt believe the traffic will interfere with officers responding to emergencies. One neighborhood who lives close by isnt so sure. When there is a game day, the traffic is bumpertobumper. If there is an emergency, i really dont think they can even get out. There is no way they can get out. This street, all the street is bumper to bumper. Back to back. I watch this every single game. Reporter now, Police Spokesman tells ktvu that officers schedules are staggered to avoid long lines of Police Cruisers waiting to leave the station. In an emergency dispatchers of course can send officers from any of the other nine districts. Meantime, the mta is exploring options to ease the traffic troubles near this new facility. But change this intersection wont be as simple as restriping the lanes. Thats because there is a concrete barrier in the middle of the road that separates the traffic lanes from the muni track. So some traffic troubles here with this new Public Safety building which, by the way, they will have the grand opening, the ribboncutting ceremony, later on this morning, dave, at 11 00. Thats an interesting dilemma. Alex savidge. Thank you. Replace archbishop cordileone. 100 people have signed it, including the father of new England Patriots quarterback tom brady. This group said that cordileone has fostered an atmosphere of division and tolerance, intolerance. A major issue for them. They say that he has coerced High School Teachers and staffers to sign a morality clause that characters sex outside of marriage and homosexual relations as gravely evil. They say his push to change the faculty handbook is mean spirited. We spoke to dozens of parishoners here in San Francisco who overwhelmingly supported this letter. I think the pope is progressive. I think this archbishop is not. I think its very opposite. And i think its a good thing that catholics and non catholics are speaking up saying, you know, times have changed and we need to do whats right for the people who live here. I think it makes sense because we are just its like taking a step back these days. I am not sure if we are ready to do that. I dont think its fair to all the teachers, what they have to go through to sign something that they are not willing to do. I dont think it would be a good precedent. I agree with it. I do not agree with discrimination of any kind. I think living in San Francisco, living here most of my life, i am very liberal and i dont believe anybody should be discriminated against. Reporter now, the ad drew a Swift Response from the archdiocese saying the diners presume to speak for the city of San Francisco. They do not. The group that orchestrated this letter will hold a press conference at 10 30. We will bring you the latest on our noon news. Live from San Francisco, Tara Moriarty, back to you. Thank you. California Health Authorities say they will officially declare the outbreak over. The measles scare originated at disneyland back in december and spread to several states and countries. In all, 131 people in california were infected. In order for the outbreak to be considered over, two backtoback incubation periods totaling 42 days must pass without any additional cases being reported. While that period ends friday, public debate sparked by the outbreak continues. A state mandatory vaccination bill inspired by the outbreak is stalled with no vote until at least next week. Lets begin, please. Tensions ran high as hundreds of parents showed up to testify against the bill at the State Capitol in sacramento yesterday. It would require kids to get vaccinated before they can enroll in school and eliminate a loophole that allows parents to opt out of vaccinations because it conflicts with their personal beliefs. Opponents say the bill is unconstitutional and tramples on personal rights. I am in fear of this law. I dont want the government telling me what i am going to be injecting into my childrens bodies. I dont think that our children should be forced to be at risk because of someone he is choices. California is one of 19 states allowing parent to cite personal belief or religious exemptions. The Senate Education committee delayed the vote and is scheduled to revisit the issue next wednesday. Its important to note similar efforts to change vaccine rules failed recently in washington and oregon. Interesting, tori. This will be a hot top ig for a long time.
