On 2. We are live in hayward near an 880 onramp where a car crashed into a mother who was pushing her bay bridge in bib bay in a controller baby in her stroller. Alex savidge just spoke with a witness to the crash about what he saw and the conditions that witness thinks may have led to the crash. Thursday, march 19. I am tori campbell. Good morning. I am dave clark. Lets talk about weather and traffic. Spring is almost here, steve. Tomorrow. I will turn it up. All right. Well, we have been trying to follow the weather, which has been yeah. Steve needs to turn his mic on. So i guess we are going to go to sal right now and talk about traffic. All right. We are going to start off with the bay bridge toll plaza because thats one of those commutes that everybody always wants to see. Westbound at the toll plaza, i wanted to let you know its at least a 25minute delay. We have checked with public transportation, in case you do want to take your bart train to the city instead of taking the car. This morning that would be a pretty decent option for you because bart is doing well. They have no major delays reported. I also want to check out, look at interstate 880 oakland and the traffic is moving along nicely in both directions. If you are trying to catch a flight at sfo, it is night. Yesterday kind after bad day on the freeway. Today its okay here. Let me show you a little bit of traffic father south. It is backed up on 880 south from 238. We have had a couple of minor wrecks on the way between 238 and highway 84. A little bit south of that there has also been a minor wreck is traffic is slow. Then in san jose northbound 101, slow traffic as you drive up to the 880 interchange. Northbound 280 is slow approaching highway 217. Now lets get to steve. Silence is golden, but can you hear me now . I can. Thank you. We have mostly clear skies. There is a little bit of fog towards san mateo, santa cruz. But its going to be sunny and nice to warm today. Just some patchy fog. Lots of sun and almost a little mini summer pattern here with 60s by the coast and low 80s inland. Of course, we will expand those as we get closer to may and june. A little system to the north may give a little bit of a westerly breeze. 39. There it is. Napa airport. 44 livermore and 46 half moon bay. We is have some low overcast. Clouds to the north. Not for us today. They will be here tomorrow. Clouds in Southern California. This weak system will give us a cooldown starting tomorrow. Look at arizona. I mean, anybody heading to spring training looks like it could be dicey for some, especially around phoenix. They are getting a lot of thunderstorm activity and rain. Some of that is moving into Southern California, but not here. Mild to warm. Patchy fog near parts of the coast. Upper 70s to low 80s inland. In fact, temperatures well above average. Back to the desk to dave and tori is. Thank you, receive. New developments in a horrific crash in hayward. A young mother was pushing her child in a stroller when they were hit by an suv. Now a witness is talking to us this morning about what he saw. Ktvu fox 2s alex savidge joins us. The mother in this case, he says, was on the ground bleeding and then not far away a stroller with that baby boy still strapped inside. Mother and child, they were both the in this crosswalk when they were hit last night. Thats according to the chp. This is right at the entrance to northbound 880 from tennyson road. Its an area of course where cars pick up speed as they head on to the freeway. The crash happened about seven last night. A white suv slammed into the 21yearold woman and her 1yearold son leaving them both with major injuries. The driver, the victim, a 22yearold woman from hayward, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. It does not look like she was under the influence. And we talked this morning with a man who just happened to be riding on his bike right after last nights crash who came upon the accident. The man speaks only spanish and he talked to us about the disturbing scene. I have never seen anything like had. I had trouble sleeping thinking about the little boy and the young woman. Reporter that man also said it can be quite dangerous to cross this freon ramp because cars are speeding up and there is no light to stop the traffic. The chp now trying to figure out exactly how fast the suv was going last night and whether speed was the factor in the crash. The chp also says they will be considering the time of day this happened. The sun was setting at that time. Again about 7 00 last night. And that may have contributed to the crash as well. The suv was heading westbound when the accident happened. Tori, the driver in this case has not been cited. She was allowed to go home last night. All right. Thanks, alex. Time is 7 05. A dialogue about race over a cup of coffee is happening at starbucks. Janine de la vega joins us live from san jose to explain why this idea is causing so much controversy. Reporter its been interesting. Starbucks is asking baristas to write the words race together on their customers coffee cups or put this sticker on the cups. The point of doing what is so the barista can strike up a conversation about Race Relations with the customers. They say they dont want to hold up the line and they say this is an offensive topic. The concept hasnt been getting warm fuzzy reviews online either. There has been backlash on the campaign started by starbucks county howard schultz. One starbucks executive received so many mean tweets that he deleted its twitter account. Schultz says he didnt want to be a silent bystander and thinks by having baristas openly engaged in conversation with customers, it would be helpful. Heres what one customer had to say this morning. I think its great. I should have got one on my cup. Reporter some were saying they are a little uncomfortable having to answer questions about that. I dont think its a big deal. I think its something that they should be more educated on for the Customer Base so they can get it on there. Fanned we have questions, they should be able to answer them without a problem. Reporter schultz is telling the baristas if they dont want it on their cup to give customers a new cup and drop the conversation. One customer told us off camera he thought this whole idea was just a bunch of bologna. Those were his words. We havent really gotten too many negative comments. Nothing negative on camera. But that could be because this is sort of an emotionally charged topic and all the mean comments we have only seen online. But again that is because people can sort of hide behind their computers. So it really, again, depends on who you ask. Tori. All right. Well, kind of to that point, thank you, janine. The idea of course was to create dialogue and it certainly got people talking on social media. April wrote not sure what starbucks is thinking. I dont have time to explain 400 years of oppression to you and till still make my train. Another one, nothing says race together by only hiring three people of color out of 19 executives. And vice news wrote, race together, critics say if starbucks cares about racial justice, it should biff it give baristas a raise. Share your comments on our ktvu Facebook Page. President obama is floating an idea to get more americans to vote by making it mandatory. Australia and some other countries its mandatory. It would be transformative if everybody voted. The president spoke yesterday in cleveland while addressing a civic group about Campaign Finance reform. In australia and a few of the countries it is mandatory for people to vote just like jury duty is required here in the u. S. But Many Americans feel nonvoting is also a political statement. Nonvoting is last legitimate choice that some people make. I wish more people would participate in politics, too. But that is the choice of living in a free society. It would ache a constitutional amendment to make voting mandatory in the u. S. , but that does not appear to be at the top of anyones agenda right now. 7 27. The issue are ads where uber claims it is the safest ride on road and has the strictest Safety Standards possible. Now, San Franciscobased uber calls the lawsuit frivolous. However, taxis, they are still the ride of choice. They pick up more than 400,000 more fares than uber. Well, in new york getting an uber ride is getting faster than getting an ambulance. Thats according to a blogger who, by the way, posted findings on the website medium of the blogger is claiming the average time to get an ambulance is six minutes. That compares to a little less than three minutes for a ride with uber. The blogger says the time differences may be due to the complex system for dispatching an ambulance. Uber, on the other hand, uses an algorithm to find its cars. Based on the bloggers finding, he suggests uber drivers should carry basic medical kids like pens and defibrillators that could possibly save lives. 7 46. Cars you would expect to see on the streets are the stars at sonoma raceway on wednesday nights. Its the start of race season and its hoped amateurs racing on a famous track will keep the streets safer. There is traditional drag racing where everything from classic muscle cars and motor homes and the occasional prius race each other. On the other side are the drifters where you can see from this camera mounted on the side of the car drivers try to stay as close as they can to the lead car. You hear people say, yeah, i want to do everything i can. I dont want to hit anybody. I dont want to be responsible for that. There is also the chance to race a cop and a patrol car. Its meant to be a bonding experience for teenagers and police. The events continue through november. I wonder what kind of wear and tear that does on your tires. I know it does. I would probably maybe try it once. I mean, its a thrill. Yeah. Get it out of your system and stuff. Its true. Its better to do this there than on the streets.
