Weve had a couple of incidents on highway 4. Were about to talk about one of them. In general, if this is your commute, you need to gisk yourself exra time to drive through highway 4. As we move down, southbound 238 will be closed all the way down to decoto road where we had an accident there. The bay bridge toll plaza is about a 25minute delay. San mateo bridge could be an alternate. Its moderately heavy. I dont know if i want to call that an alternate. Back to the desk. Thank you, sal. The chp is investigating a serious crash involving two cars in pittsburg. It started on highway 4 but ended on a road right next to the freeway. Ktvus Tara Moriarty joins us live from the scene with more. Pretty bizarre crash. Good morning, tara. Reporter well, good morning. The chp is chalking this up to an unsafe lane change. They say both of the cars were going 65 miles an hour when they both decided to make a switch in lanes at the exact same time. Thats how this happened. The car flipped. The accident happening just after 5 00 this morning. It began on highway 4 westbound near the railroad avenue exit. The force of the impact sent the pickup off of the freeway leading a trail of glass, grass and other debris in the path. The chp says the driver of the puck, a man in his 40s suffered cuts to the forehead. Minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital. The other driver walked away without a scratch. No one was cited. The crash did not block any freeway traffic since it didnt happen on the freeway. Tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. The chp is also investigate being a deadly accident involving a young woman walking on the partnership in walnut creek. It creek on the highway in walnut creek. She ran in front of another car. She was immediately struck and killed. Her car broke down. She called a coworker for assistance shortly before the deadly accident. The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The chp is also investigating a deadly accident on northbound 880 in san jose. It happened around 10 00 last night near bascom road. According to the chp, two cars crashed and someone was ejected from the car. That person died at the scene. All lanes were shut down for several hours but have since reopened. Vallejo police are searching for the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting outside a motel. It happened late yesterday at the Howard Johnson inn and suites near 80. Police say a 23yearold man was shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, a man in his 70s was wounded but is expected to survive. Witnesses spotted the gage speeding away from the scene in a black car. Its still not clear what led up to the gunfire. Several people out of their homes this morning in alameda after two fires started within three hours of each other. Firefighters blame unhe attended food on the stove that caught unattended food on the stove that caught fire and spread. The second fires cause is under investigation. An oakland mother charged in the death of her 2yearold son is expected to enter a plea in court today. She was arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and child abuse earlier this month. Police say her 2yearold son ingested cocaine while in her car. The child died in the hospital. The woman jad admitted to using cocaine and was arrested the day after she gave birth to her other child. The home of one of the 49ers making controversial headline was recently burglarized. Authorities in Solano County say the 63yearold man was riding an atv in steep terrain when he lost control and crashed around 6 30 last night. Vacaville firefighters had to use offroad vehicles to reach the man. The chp helicopter was called in to get the man out. Authorities say he was not wearing a helmet. Noup date on his condition no update on his condition. San francisco firefighters rescued a person and a dog trapped on a cliff. It happened near fort funston. It took firefighters almost an hour to get the person and dog to safe ground. There were no injuries reported. All right, tc. A busy weekend for the coast guard in San Francisco. Its not backed up fon 580 all the way to 24 for example and 80 is not backed up around the macarthur maze but still a normal morning. As were driving to the san mateo bridge, you will see slow traffic at 238. It stays that well into fremont almost all the way to milpitas. San mateo and dumbarton bridge moderately heavy. 580 has been slow from livermore through the construction zone. Had someone ask me, when is it gonna get better . The answer is when they complete that widening project that they are doing there on 580. Lets move to a live picture of the south bay, northbound 280 very slow out of downtown san jose getting up into the valley. Thats taking about 15 minutes to drive from downtown to cupertino. 7 33. Back to the desk. The Richmond San Rafael bridge may get big changes soon. Katie utehs is in san rafael with a proposal thats moving forward. Reporter good morning. The goal is to ease Traffic Congestion and almost everybody can get on board with that. The controversial portion of the plan is adding a bike lane to the upper deck. The bridge is wide enough to accommodate three lanes. It has at one point. So this proposal would happen without construction to the bridge. The additional lane of traffic would be used for eastbound vehicle traffic during peak evening travel, according to the marin independent journal. The right shoulder of the lower deck would be utilized as a lane. This plan would only require restriping or new signage. There is a proposal to add a bike lane to the upper deck which can be a polarizing issue. I personally think it would be dreadful but thats because i watch a lot of bicyclists and they dont seem to really follow the road signs. Reporter i have heard from several folks on twitter saying that they would love a bike lane across the bridge. So both sides of the issue here interested in how that would turn out. The bike lane is the more complicated portion of the proposal. Determining how cyclists would enter the east part of the bridge is another proposal. 3million has been allocated for Design Services. Live in san rafael, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. A bicyclist is still in Critical Condition this morning after an accident yesterday morning in the berkeley hills. It happened at spruce and una streets. Police say a car collided with a cyclist in his 60s out for a sunday morning ride. Now, this area is popular for weekend bike riders and that intersection is known to be very dangerous. Its a reasonably steep road. We do a group ride up here every sunday. Im always telling people to keep an eye out and be careful. Theres a lot of rolling stops. A lot of near misses with bicycles and or cars. Berkeley police say the driver involved in the crash did stop and is cooperating with investigators. At this point, we still dont know whether the driver will face any charges. Police are urging people not to give money to panhandlers. Alex savidge joins us live from brentwood to explain why police there say being nice to people who ask for money is a bad idea. Good morning, alex. Reporter tori, gorming. Members of the police union are good morning. Members of the police union are urging people to hang onto their loose change and dont give it to panhandlers. They believe this area has developed a generous reputation and thats drawing more people to this area to ask for money. There is a campaign to deal with panhandling here. It all got started when a Police Officer came across a man asking for money outside of this bank of america. According to that police by the police union that man told the Police Officer he talked with that day that he prefers to come to brentwood because people here are nicer and give him more money. Police say the man had 60 cash on him which he said he earned in a few hours and he was a convicted felon. In the post, it warns the public giving money to panhandlers will only encourage criminals to come here. People in this area were talking to this morning agree panhandling has become a big problem. But some think this approach is a bit harsh. If people see it in that heart to give, you cant say dont give to somebody. Its it might be coldhearted. Reporter that took post urges people to call police if someone approaches them and asks for money. Instead of handing out money, the police union is encouraging people instead to give to a charity. Heavy smoke from the massive king fire burning in El Dorado County canceled one of north americas challenging athletic competitions. County air quality officials have recommended that the event be canceled. We apologize the ironman lake tahoe was called off minutes before it was supposed to start yesterday morning. The concern is unhealthy air for the 3,000 participants. Athletes come from around the world to compete and they train for months. But despite being disappointed. Some say it is the right call. More than 2,000 are believed to be europeans along with about 100 americans. 2 investigates have discovered police in the east bay are trying to upgrade a controversial cell phone tracking system, potentially making it more powerful. Internal records from Oakland Police show that opd, free montpolice and the alameda District Attorneys Office are all jointly applying for federal money to upgrade a device. It allows police to find a cell phones location within just a few feet. But privacy advocates say anyone nearby, criminal or not, can have their cell signal intercepted and the new capabilities that will come with the upgrade are shrouded in secrecy. Law enforcement are using these devices but were not sure how they are using them. How frequently they are using them in many instances and theres a lot of secrecy about that process. Bay bridge toll plaza. 25, 30minute delay before you get over to the San Francisco side of the bridge. You will see a lot of slow traffic. One of the things i want to mention highway 37 open. You probably heard that already. I will tell you again its open on the way from solano to sonoma county. When you get to marin, you will see slow traffic down to san rafael. Lets go to steve. The boy is recovering. In colorado, a unique program is helping military veterans heal through marijuana. Its called operation grow for veterans. It gives soldiers injured in combat 200 in cannabis products for free. Hundreds waited in line to get a weeks supply and a chocolate bar and eight marijuana seeds to grow their own medicine. Come on 580. People always ask, which way should i approach . It does make a big difference and traffic will be busy. Highway 4 westbound as you drive up to the willow pass grade. You will see traffic thats backed up a little bit as you drive through. There are no major problems here. Some of those earlier accidents have been removed and then highway 37 back to the slow traffic. But its opened on the way toward marin. Lets go back to the desk. Well, burglars robbed the home of one of the San Francisco 49ers who is making headlines accused of Domestic Violence. Were talking about defensive end rape who was not ray mcdonald who was not at home at the time. What are they saying . Reporter they are surprised because they say that ray mcdonald has dogs. They are pretty loud. Were on Bentley Ridge drive in front of his home here in the silver creek neighborhood which is very upcame upscale. Theres a sign indicating there is an alarm. Its unclear if the alarm was on and triggered. San jose police were called just before 11 00 saturday night to the home. Sources told ktvu no one was home at the time of the burglary and that valuables, mainly electronics were stolen. Officers say when they arrived, they spoke to a person who reported the burglary and confirmed there was forced entry into the home. Ray mcdonald was in arizona preparing for sundays game. They gathered evidence for the investigation but at this time, the thief is still at large. We dont know if its just one suspect or multiple suspects. Neighbors say police knocked on their door letting them know about the breakin. Heres what bun one of the neighbors told what one of the neighbors told us. I just heard dogs bach barking. I have heard there are other breakins in in the neighborhood. Reporter Police Booked ray mcdonald in jail in august on suspicion of Domestic Violence after feeian say was found with visible injuries. He posted gail and was released bail and was released later that morning. He has not been suspended from plalling with the 49ers playing with the 49ers but Roger Goodell announced hes toughening the policy on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in response to the ray rice incident, suspending players for at least six games. People in this neighborhood say theyve noticed that breakins have been happening more frequently. Police have not shared whether they believe that mcdonalds home was specifically targeted because hes highprofile and on the 49ers. We havent seen too much activity out here. We did notice there was a light on but we havent seen anybody emerge yet from the house. As far as these allegations of Domestic Violence violence. Hes not been officially larged with any crimes. In the meantime, Colin Kaepernick is denying he used a racial slur during last weekends game against the chicago bears. Fox sports is reporting that slur was the inappropriate language that resulted in kaepernicks 11,000 fine. But kaepernick maintains he did not say anything to lamarr houston. Houston has also said he didnt recall hearing anything out of line from the 49er quarterback. The chp is investigating a crash involving two cars in pittsburg. It started on highway 4 near the railroad avenue exit. It ended on a road right next to the freeway. The chp says both drivers decided to make lane changes at the same time. One of the Drivers Behind the wheel of a pickup truck went through a freeway pairier and flipped over on a frontage road. That driver suffered minor injuries. The other driver was not hurt. No one was hurt site cited. Its been a month since napas earthquake sit damaging home hit damaging homes and stressing out people. For the first time in five years, a condominium developer is opening a sales office for a major downtown San Francisco tower. The economic crash of 2009 wiped out most condo developments across the country including in San Francisco. But now with the housing shortage in the city, the San Francisco chronicle reports, condo sales are growing in popularity. That includes a new lumina development at mission and beale street. Some people in the Dolores Heights neighborhood are upset about Construction Projects by mark zuckerberg. Now, the home is on 21st near dolores streets. The construction started about 17 months ago. The neighbors complained about the constant noise and say they havent been able to park outside of their home since the renovation work began. Many have filed complaints. It looks whamer warmer today. Vallejo police are searching for the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting outside of a motel. It happened late yesterday at the Howard Johnson inn and suites near 880. Police say a 23yearold man was shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, a nan his 7 a man in his 70s was wounded but is expected to survive. Witnesses spotted the man speeding away in a black car. An oakland mother charged in the death of her 2yearold son is expected to enter a plea in court today. 39yearold woman was arrested an charged withen voluntary manslaughter and chimed abuse earlier this child abuse earlier this month. Police say her son ingested cocaine and died at the hospital. Police say howard admitted to using cocaine. She was also pregnant at the time of the incident and was arrested the day after she gave birth to her other child. Were hearing from the pilot who crashed in the Sequoia National park and lived to tell about it. Tim cassell was making his regular trip to his familys resort in death valley. About 20 minutes away from landing, the propeller broke in half. He said the plane spiraled to the ground at 2,000 feet a minute before crashing. He was able to crawl out of the wreckage only thinking could he live long enough to see his family. I was worried about her, about my wife, because i knew that she wouldnt know what was going on over the next several days it would be difficult. I didnt care about the plane, or anything in the complaint accept him. He was found the next day. He survived by wrapping himself in blankets. Hes recovering with three broken ribs, two sprained ankles and fractures in his face. Uc berkeley will make a big announcement involving a former San Francisco giant. Infielder jeff kent is donating more than 500,000 to his former school. Kent wants the money to go towards helping female athletes compete in soccer, softball, tennis, track or cross country. Kent played infield at uc berkeley in the late 1980s before his big League Career with the giants and dodgers. Used car prices sliding as more people are trading in their old cars. Its supposedly happened last sunday at manresa state beach. Park rangers are investigating but now a salinas tv station is casting doubt on the surfers story he was attacked. They interviewed a shark expert to looked at the surfboard and said there were not bite marks from a shark. Also suspicious a post on craigslist for a shark attack surfboard for sale for 1,000. They interviewed the surfer two times and both times he had different stories about what happened. The chp is investigating a deadly crash involving a young woman walking on the freeway in walnut creek. It happened just after 11 00 last nighted on interstate 680. Tara moriarty has more. Reporter theres some Unanswered Questions as to why the woman got out of her car and stepped into on coming traffic. It was dark out. But she stepped out onto the offramp. The chp says the victim, a 24 yearold woman had car trouble. She pulled over on the shoulder and called a coworker for help. She put her hazards lights on and for unknown reasons stood in the traffic rain. She was struck by a gray mercedes. That driver did stop and is cooperating with the chp. The victims identity has not been released. The chp says that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash. So that is the good news. Now we also know that the chp is asking anybody who may have seen this accident to step forward and give them a call here in Contra Costa County. The secret service is reviewing security procedures at the white house after a man jumped over the fence ran across the lawn and got inside the white house. It happened friday evening, just after president obama and his daughters left the white house boarding a helicopter on the south lawn. Four minutes later on the other side of the white house, a man with a knife jumped the fence and ran across the north lawn and got into the white house before being stopped by the secret service. The man who jumped over the funs, Omar Gonzalez is due in court. Hes an army veteran who served three tours in iraq. His stepson says he suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder and needs treatment. Three Afghan Military officers who came to the u. S. For training are now reported missing. The men arrived september 11th at joint base cape cod in massachusetts for military exercises. They were last seen saturday night at a Shopping Mall in the area. The Massachusetts National guard says all three were cleared by the state department and theres no indication they are a threat to the public. 8 26. Today, nasas mavens spacecraft is circles mars getting ready for the real work it was designed to do. Maven is now in orbit. [ applause ] okay happy scientists there. Those are the maven scientists who launched maven from florida and waited to see if it could successful go 442 million miles to mars. The controllers will spend the next six weeks adjusting its altitude and also checking all of its scientific instruments. Scientists believe this could provide clues to how mars went from being wet and warm to dry and cold. So inence ses, thats our in essence, thats our goal to answer the question where did the water go, where did the Carbon Dioxide go. The maven spacecraft is expected to stay in orbit for about a year. Back to the desk. Thank you. The police union in brentwood, theyve launched a campaign in an effort to curb panhandling. Alex savidge is joining us live to tell us about a request thats raising eyebrows. Reporter good morning. The police union here is urging the public to hang onto their spare change and not to give it to panhandlers. They believe that brentwood has developed a reputation as being generous and that is drawing the needy here to this city in search of money. Let me show you this Facebook Post that was put up by the brentwood Police Officers association thats raising some eyebrows. Its a campaign to deal with panhandling and it apparently first got started when an officer came across a man recently who was asking for a money outside of a bank of america. According to the police union post, that man told the officer that he prefers to come to brentwood because people here are nicer and give him more money. Police go on to say that man had 60 on him in cash whi he earned a which he earned in a few hours and also police also say the man was a convicted felon. It warns the public that giving money to panhandlers here in brentwood will only encourage more criminals to come here. People we talked to agree but think this approach is harsh. I know im getting fed you up it with it. It seems every gas station or every corner there a sign or they are bothering you. But i have a bleeding heart. They are gonna go where the money is. If faress to money dash if theres no money, they will go somewhere else. The Facebook Post asking for them not to hand out money but give it to a charity. All right. 8 34. A bicyclist in berkeley remains in Critical Condition after an accident in the berkeley hills. It happened yesterday morning at the intersection of spruce and una streets. Police say a car collided with a man in his 60s. He was out on a sunday morning bike like. Now, that area is popular for weekend bike riders and this particular intersection is known to be very dangerous. Its a reasonably steep road. We do a group ride up here every sunday. Im telling people to keep an eye out and be careful. Not a lot of cars stop. Theres near misses that ive seen with bicycles and or cars. Police say the driver involved in the crash did stop immediately and is cooperating with investigators. At this point, we dont know if the driver will face any charges. A man wanted for three separate indecent exposure incidents is in jail. Police released this sketch last week. They say 42yearold Mitchell Curtis powell was arrested after a third incident near the Fairfax Police station. Last tuesday a bomb said the spun exposed himself near the lownsdown playstation. A similar incident happened in fairfax. Powell is booked in the marin county jail. A proposal to add lanes to the Richmond San Rafael bridge is moving forward. It might move at the same slow pace as the evening commute. Katie utehs is live in san rafael with the details on exactly what is planned. Reporter good morning. They would like to add an additional lane to the lower deck for vehicle traffic and a lane to the upper deck for bicycle traffic. Thats the more controversy of the two components in the proposal. The bike lane would resh would require a lot more work. The third lane would help alleviate congestion. Existing bridge space would be used. The right shoulder could be adds as a lane by retrying or new signage. Originally there were three lanes in both directions on the bridge.
