Hawaiian islands are facing delays, cancellations and risk. Alec savage is at the airport. In two minutes he will tell us what folks flying out this morning are telling him. Good morning. Lets talk about weather and traffic. Steve, i know you are focused on our weather. You are watching the big storm . We are, indeed. Hurricanes dont hit the Hawaiian Islands that often. September 11, 1992. The last one usually they go south or north. There is two of them. One is definitely taking aim at the big island. Thats iselle. Wind 90 Miles Per Hour so its category 1 and its heading south of helo. The second one is heading to the north. Now, again, it will weaken a little bit as it moves over the higher terrain. The mountain areas are going to get hammered with a lot of rain. There will be a foot of rain, probably mudslides, damaging wind as well. When it comes out on the kona side, if the path is correct, a storm watch for kawai. Tropical clouds moving on out as we say. The low cloud deck is definitely. 50s and 60s on the temps. A little bit of a westerly breeze. Not a bad delta breeze. Its not going to be hot, hot. We will be it back in the normal category which is 60s, 70s. A lot of fog there. There will be a lot of sun once it burns off. But fog will be hanging on by the coast. Breezy at times. But 60s to 90s. Heres brian. Thank you so much. We are approaching the heart of the morning commute. Good morning everybody. One of the areas we are looking at is highway 4 in the pittsburg bay point area. Happening now, prepping for hurricanes iselle and julio hawaii now looks calm and picturesque, but it will change this evening when iselle makes landfall. Hawaii crews are rushing to fill up and distribute sandbags due to the threat of flooding. Hurricane julio, which is expected to hit on saturday, was upgraded earlier this morning to a category 2 storm with maximum winds of 100 miles an hour. These two hurricanes are really messing up travel plans for people across the country, including right here in the bay area. A couple of flights from San FranciscoInternational Airport to hawaii have already been canceled, but some flights are still headed to the islands. Ktvus alec savidge is live at sfo where he talked to one family heading right into the storm. Reporter good morning to you. Travelers from the bay area heading over to hawaii ahead of these two hurricanes, theyre telling me this morning they arent all that worried. Especially with the first of the two storms being a category 1. They plan to kind of sneak in before iselle makes landfall later today and hopefully ride things out over the next few days. Right now iselle is bearing down on the big island. It is expected to make landfall later today. There are some people who could be in trouble because of these storms. Their trips may have to be pushed back. Already at least one flight to hawaii has been canceled out of sfo today. Iselle is expected to bring heavy rain and high surf and could disrupt more than a few vacations over on the islands. We talked to one bay area family leaving this morning for hawaii and they tell me they are ready to spend a lot of time indoors during their stay. Thats okay because we are just going to go hang out and relax, read books. Had this isnt our first time to hawaii. So its not a big like, what a bummer, we are not going to the beach. And we know we can still swim. If the wind isnt so bad outside. Reporter and iselle just the beginning. The first of two storms that will hit hawaii. Hurricane julio, which is a category 2 storm, is expected to make landfall at some point this weekend. Some airlines are giving customers a break. United and Hawaiian Airlines wont be charging fees to change reservations because of the storms. Some hotels are dropping cancellation fees as well. All the airports in hawaii right now remain open, but there is one regional carrier there that flies between the various islands. They are planning to cancel flights tomorrow. But before that its really heavy as you approach highway 92. Looking at 880 near the Oakland Coliseum southbound lanes slower. Definitely going to pick up and be a lot voer, actually, northbound lanes later in the morning as you pass the coliseum. Take a look at the maps now. Really not too bad. Typical traffic in the Livermore Valley as you approach hayward this morning and as you see here from the east bay viewpoint as well, as you see near the bay bridge entrance right there. A little bit slowandgo. But it gets a little bit better when you get into the city. In the south bay northbound 101 typical traffic. Gets pretty heavy on northbound 101. Take a look at the 880 split. Slowandgo. Lincoln avenue off the way to south wolf road. Kind of a tough word to say. 7 47. Heres steve. Thank you very much. Well, anemometer there whipping in the wind. There will not be a quiz. There is going to be heavy duty rain. 137, 132 if you are familiar with that area. The north coast as well. Isolated amounts. No doubt about it. When it goes over the higher elevations, 13,000 feet, thats going to take some of the energy out of it. Once it passes close to kona, looks like it will pick up more steam as it heads south of maui and oahu. So Tropical Storm warnings out there. Tropical storm warnings are not as bad as hurricane warnings. For cue way there is a watch. The big island will be tonight, tomorrow. Its moving fast. 18 Miles Per Hour. A lot of fog. Toris heard that. I heard that from a friend of mine. He goes, what humidity . Yet we have this humidity. I text my buddy and said its hot and humid here. He says not here. Morning rain yesterday. Clouds. Sun. Humid and warm. That temperature went up and that humidity was high yesterday. There will be fog and lows dropping in but from the north not the south. The end result will be a cooler pattern and more fog. 50s and 60s on the temps. Most locations less than ten. 47 up in tahoe. 60s all over. Reno 62. Ukiah says hey, were 62. Low clouds by the beaches. 50s, 60s there. 80s and 90s inland. Little breeze once that fog burns off a little bit and heads back to the coast. 71 richmond. San rafael at 82. Petaluma 82. 97 in clear lake. 90 fairfield. 89 in concord, pleasant hill. 79 san leandro. Alameda 78. 83 san jose. 84 santa clara. 85 wood side. 70 san bruno and 64 daly city. China, by the way, is considered a key market for tesla. Bank of america and the Justice Department very close to a settlement over bad mortgages. The wall street journal says the bank would pay a record 16 billion to settle all claims. The bofa has agreed to pay 9 billion in cash to the government. Lots of low cloud and fog around. Sunny inland. Byebye to these tropical clouds until maybe monday. Another low coming in. Lots going on with had hawaiian hurricane. Lets get right to it. I just saw something that said if iselle maintains hurricane intensity or status it would be the first hurricane to hit the big island since hurricane records began in 1950. It would also be the third hurricane with the letter i to impact the Hawaiian Islands. You have iselle, iniki and iwa. So 1992 and 1982. The is have it here and its 280 miles now from hilo. Still 85 Miles Per Hour. It has to maintain at least 74. All indications it will even though its running into some resistance. Strong upper level winds and slightly cooler ocean temps. Central pressure has gone up a little bit. 29. 09 in inches. Wind 85 Miles Per Hour. Julio, though, is strengthened. 105 Miles Per Hour. Its projected path is expected to be north but not until the weekend. With iselle on mind tonight the big island definitely a hurricane warning. 58 inches of rain. Isolated. A foot or more. No doubt about that. It will lose a little bit of punch as it moves over there. The mountainside there is definitely going to be a lot of rain. A lot of lifting there. It comes out, it should weaken a little bit. Tropical storm warnings for maui and oahu. A couple friends said the airport was packed. Look at the fog bank. There is not breaks in it. It might tap into tropical clouds around monday or tuesday. My guess is it probably will because thats been happening for five weeks now. 60s on the temps. 50s for some. 54 in tahoe. 65 sacramento. Ukiah. Some inland areas in the 90s. But the fog and low clouds will keep temperatures on the cooler side by the coast and bay. A normal pattern for us. Fog on the coast. A westerly breeze. Lets talk about weather. Steve, you can talk for an hour on this . I could. I know. Yeah. Some interesting stats coming in. No hurricane has ever hit the big island since they kept reported i think 1950. This will be the first. Most of the hurricanes come in towards the south where the water is warmer and then move up, which is what iniki did in 1992. But this one is defying that and its still about 280 miles from hilo. 85 Miles Per Hour. It has weakened slightly. But you have to remember, i mean, there is some very Tall Mountain areas over the big islands. So some of the impacts are kind of unknown. Its going to be definitely a lot of rain and probably flooding, some coastal flooding, storm surge is as well. So hurricane warning out for the island. That will be tonight. This is going to be a foot of rain for some. You get tremendous lifting on the wind ward side. No doubt about it. Maybe things will be a little better on the kona side. After it moves over the big island it will weaken a little bit but then Tropical Storm warnings out for maui and oahu. Steering currents are determined by the global winds. It will take me forever to talk about that. But the global winds determining that. We will deal with iselle starting tonight. A lot of low clouds. 60s on the temps. They are not jumping out of the gate too fast. They are all pretty close. 50s, 60s for some. 18 coming down in fairfield. There will be a little bit of a delta breeze today. Fog, sun, back to warm for some. A seabreeze, thats a westerly wind. 80s, 90s inland. 60s, 70s by the bay. Heres brian. Thank you so much. When you thought things were Getting Better in terms of the traffic world, things happen. What can i say . One of the places that were talking about, the bay bridge toll plaza. Just a few minutes ago you saw traffic moving pretty freely there, but again it is backed up. The reason why . Because there is a disabled vehicle blocking one of the toll lanes there. So that is definitely going to back up traffic at least for a few minutes while crews try to remove that car that is blocking the toll lane. The winner in terms of traffic today would probably be the grade. Traffic has been moving great through this. The traffic on the right side heading towards the south bay in san jose typically you see traffic right there but its been moving pretty nicely it morning. Taking a look at the south bay, this has improved since the last ten minutes or so besides the typical traffic that you see on northbound 101 and 280 as well. Taking a look off the san mateo bridge, a little bit of traffic again off northbound 101 and southbound as well. And this is looking pretty good on the other side of the san mateo bridge as well. At 8 33 heres dave. Thank you. A woman in fremont is questioning the Justice System after a man she claims terrorized her reportedly struck again. Ktvus pam cook is in our studio with more on the deaths of two people in northern california, pam, and a heartbreaking warning from a woman. Reporter yes. Very interesting. State Health Officials announced two deaths linked to west nile virus. One a 74yearold woman from sacramento county, but she did have an underlying Chronic Health condition. The only information we have about the second person who died is that it was an adult from Shasta County. She says she went to bed with a mosquito bite. She woke up paralyzed. After hearing about the recent deaths she says she knew she had to speak out. This could happen. Please dont fight spraying. Dont fight deet. Dont tell me you are going to get a geranium and its going to keep the mosquitoes away, because its not. Reporter now a spokesperson for Vector Control says the chemicals being sprayed have been rigorously tested and they pose minimal risk to humans and pets. Health professionals do say that people with asthma or other respiratory issues may want to take extra precautions during spraying. That includes keeping your windows shut and air conditioners off during the spraying. You might want to keep your pets inside so they dont come in direct contact with the spraying and they advise to make sure you wash home grown fruits and vegetables after spraying sessions. Stores like costco and home depot have been trying to keep up with demands, but in some cases theyre still running out of supplies. Ktvus alex savidge live at sfo. Flights have been delayed or canceled for the islands . Reporter yes. Some travelers may have to push back their trips a bit. Already one flight out of sfo heading to hawaii has been canceled today. Duty manager says they are keeping a close tab on the situation over there, a close watch on the situation and its possible more flights could be canceled to hawaii as we move throughout the day today. Still a lot of flights have been leaving from sfo to hawaii this morning. We have been talking with some of those travelers. Even though iselle is closing in on the big island right now and forecasters expect it will make lands fall later on today, iselle is expected to bring heavy rain, high surf, the possibility of flooding, and, of course, that could ruin more than a few vacations. I talked a short time ago with a couple who wanted to call off their vacation because of the storms but they tell me they couldnt cancel because their hotel wouldnt cancel the reservations and wouldnt ajust those reservations. While some travelers are anxious as they head off to hawaii this morning others are just shrugging off these two hurricanes. Are you worried at all . Its just rain. Rain and wind. No problem. Hurricane julio will likely make landfall sometime this weekend. And some airlines, because of these storms, are giving customers a break. You will find it in the hot topics section on the home front page. 8 48. Want to check in with brian flores in for sal this morning and see how traffic is doing on this morning. Good morning. Traffic looking good in some parts. Not so great in other parts. As we take a look at 880 this morning this is one of the better parts this morning. Traffic looking really good as you pass the coliseum. A little bit south of that towards fremont is where it gets heavy. Taking a look at the maps, this is where the damage was really done in the city or towards the city. 101 northbound as you approach 280 an earlier accident. The chp has since closed that incident but they just got the cars that were involved out of the way. But the damage has been pretty much done there. And taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning traffic would typically be better now but we understand that there is a disabled car that is blocking one of the toll lanes there. So traffic is backed up. That is backed up way past the maze all the way onto the east shore freeway. Heres steve. Thank you very much there, brian. We have a lot of low clouds around. Our pattern is back to a quiet, normal pattern. Not this tropical stuff or rain. Drizzle maybe saturday. Keeping a close eye on iselle heading 280, 300 miles from heel owe moving westnorthwest. Usually they go south of the big island. Is the impacts arent really known. But you can bet because of the high terrain there is probably going to be a lot of rain. This would not be two hurricanes hitting because julio is expected to hit north. Iselle is going over the big island and south over oahu and maui. So hurricane warnings. Also Tropical Storm warnings. There is going to be easily a foot of rain. Some of these elevations are high so thats going to wring out a lot of moisture. For us we have a lot of low clouds and fog here and that just means we are back to its not 70 in walnut creek. Thats a higher elevation. I dont know where that comes from. Livermore 64. Concord 63. 65 mountain view. Everyone pretty close. Fairfield a decent breeze but nothing crazy and there is definitely a fog bank out there. With that in mind temperatures back in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s. Pretty close to average for this time of year. Today looks to be warmest over the next five. Warm for some. Cool for others. Upper 80s, 90s, 60s closer to the coast. Low cloud deck is there. No doubt about it. Our weather is quiet. Maybe we will get a cooldown on the weekend. There could be some more tropical early next week. Thank you, steve. It is nine minutes before 9 00. New this morning the Oscar Pistorius murder trial wrapped up a short time ago for the day with the defense in the middle of its final arguments. The defense will pick up tomorrow morning. So far its accused the prosecution of ignoring the facts of the case to fit its arguments. Earlier today the prosecutor called pistorius a liar, hatching several different theories in a dishonest attempt to deflect the fact that he shot and killed his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. The prosecutor even used a metaphor describing that the olympic sprinter dropped the baton on truth. Pistorius faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder. Time is 8 52. Talk about a lasting impression. Changing gears, matching mementos from a Paul Mccartney concert that a San Francisco woman and her daughter will never forget. Crews continue to work on sir Francis Drake boulevard in marin county. A portion of the roadway near San Quentin State Prison was damaged when a big rig flipped over and spilled 4,000 gallons of gas. The chp says cleanup efforts by caltrans have been taking place a few days a week since the accident. Crews are working to replace the part of the roadway that was saturated with the gas. Lanes will continue to be shifted and closed until the work is done, but there is no burned when that will be. Investigators may have discovered the cause of a fire at a former hotel in San Francisco. Cal osha says the flames may have been started by some welding work during a renovation project at the former hotel. Eight construction workers were injured. Seven were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. All of their injuries were considered minor. The fire burned for more than three hours. Most people go to a concert, they leave with a tshirt. But a San Francisco woman and her daughter who went to a Paul Mccartney concert in montana got something they will never forget. Sharon white and her daughter made signs begging Paul Mccartney to bring them up on stage. Well, guess what . He did it. Then he autographed their shoulders. Well, they decided to make that autograph permanent. They made it into matching tattoos. And this is not the first time the whites have seen mccartney in concert. They have traveled around the nation to see him perform, and definitely they plan to be in San Franciscos Candlestick Park when he takes the stage next thursday. 8 56. As we take a last look at the traffic this morning westbound 580 looking great through the Livermore Valley. Highway 84 still red through 680. Highway 4 stopandgo traffic. But this is great once you get pasta point into the concord area. The bay bridge toll plaza starting to back up because one car is blocking the toll lanes. We are trying to get an update whether that car is removed. We have not heard back. Pretty significant backup on the bay bridge toll plaza. Heres steve. We have a lot of low clouds around.
