So far every traveler ive spoken to this morning has heard about the teen stow away. I spoke with a family thats on their way to hawaii, and they say that that Security Breach scared them. It also concerned congressman eric swaell. Hes taking a closer look at the airport perimeter. Many are questioning how good security is if a 15yearold was able to scale the fence and go undetected. Last month the boy hopped the fence in the overnight hours and hid in the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines jet making it all the way to maui. Security cameras did not capture him climbing over the fence, but video shows an undetected person on the tarmac in san jose. Earlier this week, local politicians expressed their frustration after finding out that three weeks before the Security Breach the Transportation Security Administration cleared san joses airport as meeting Perimeter Security requirements. This morning we asked travelers what they want. More security. Check the fences. There should be more security going around the fences because anyone could go over and put something on a plane. You just dont know. Swawell has requested the Government Accountability office conduct a nationwide assessment of the nations airport Perimeter Security needs. We just got an update from the fire chief here in San Francisco. She told me there were two people taken to the hospital as a result of this fire, but they are expected to be okay. Theyre going to be checked out at the hospital. This is the scene here. This is bright street between stanley and randolph, and what we have here is three separate houses that caught fire here this morning, and firefighters were called in from a number of different stations in this area, quite a few crews here at this scene this morning. As we were driving over here from downtown San Francisco, we could smell smoke along 280 as we were driving in, so along the freeway even there was smoke drifting into that area. This fire put off quite a bit of smoke. Its actually still not knocked down at this point according to the fire chief. Lets listen here briefly to what the chief just told us a few minutes ago about this firefighting effort. Visibility is a problem, not only the smoke, but the fog. Couldnt see much. We have a fire this both buildings on each side that are actively involved with fire. Fire is not yet contained. Essentially what happened is that fire started in one of these homes and that it quickly spread to a second home and then also on to a third home, and thats because obviously the close proximity of the homes in this area. And again, firefighters are still out here right now. You can probably see some of the them up there on the roof of that house trying to make sure that this fire is fully extinguished. It may take some time to get a complete knock don. What we understand in to being with the fire chief, two people taken to the hospital this morning, two people hurt in this fire in the ingleside neighborhood of San Francisco and firefighters still working to get this fire fully under control. We do see some of the people we were told by the chief they dont have an exact count on the total number of people inside these three homes but maybe about a dozen or s. New this morning, the u. S. Unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in five and a half years. 6. 3 and employers added 288,000 jobs. Thats the most in two years. Some analysts are calling this report spectacular. Washington insider jamie dupree joins us from washington d. C. Via skype to tell us. What do these numbers really mean to you,. We can go into this report and find good signs and bad signs. Lets give the basics. 6. 3 unemployment is the lowest since october of 2008. The 288,000 job gain in april was much more than a lot of people had expected, and in fact, february, march were both revised upwards over 2,000. We got several straight months of 200 plus thousand job growth. A lot of economists believe we need to get over 300,000. When you dig down into the report, you also find that the labor force, the size of the labor force shrunk in april. There were over 800,000 people who simply gave up looking for work. That may be one reason the jobless rates went down. Good signs with continued private job growth and warning signs about the size of the labor force story. Also theres usually the situation with the unemployment going down because fewer people are actually looking for work correct . Yeah, thats the whole thing about the labor force. Participation rate which dropped to 62. 8 overall. Again, theres a whole different range of measures and data thats put out by the bureau of labor statistics, and the democrats can dig in and find good things and the republicans can dig in and find things that maybe dont look so good. Overall, the start of this year tori, the average number of jobs created is up from last year. Now, again, it probably needs to get up and get moving a lot more to get us i would say out of third gear and more into fourth or fifth gear in terms of economic growth. So this report still shows modest moderate job growth, not as much as the white house would like. Thank you so much for your perspective. Always appreciate it jamie. You can find a link to, go to ktvu. Com, and go to our politics page. Time now 7 46. Happening right now, a man hunt is underway for a firefighter accused of a brutal murder. We have some fog back. Its not up here yet. By tonight really lifting. Saturday night, sunday morning well get some drizzle out of this. Its a very low fog bank right now. Its trying. Its making its push but still runs into resistance with warm air aloft. Once we get that cooler air in that will allow the fog to lift and make it into areas that were pretty darn warm. 50s, 60s on the temps. Im getting a couple reports from people going it just kind of feels cooler here. By tonight it will be, but right now thats definitely a sign of upper 80s through the inland areas. Happening today, bay area congressman Eric Swalwell will tour the perimeter of san joses airport this morning. Hes going to see for himself how easy it would be for someone to get in. Ktvus janine de la vega just talked with congressman swalwell and can tell us now the questions hes raising about Airport Security after that teenager climbed into the wheel well of a jet at the airport. Good morning. Reporter good morning dave. Congressman told me he feels he owes it to the public to come here himself and take a look at the airport perimeter to see how he can if theres a way to improve security here so that a breach does not happen again. Many are questioning the security at san joses airport because last month a 15year old boy was able to scale the fence, which is topped off with barbed wire and go undetected. The boy hopped the fence in the overnight hours and hid in the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines jet and made it all the way to maui. Security cameras did not capture him climbing over the fence but video shows an undetected person on the tarmac. Swalwell will be taking a tour at 10 this morning. Heres a member of the Homeland Security subcommittee on transportation security. I am confident that there is a solution to this that very likely will be tech based, and we have already talked with with a number of Different Companies who believe that this can be easily solved and better protecting the public. The question is going to be what the cost is and what we can afford to pay as taxpayers. Reporter earlier this week, local politicians expressed their frustration after finding out that three weeks before the Security Breach, the Transportation Security Administration cleared san joses airport as meeting Perimeter Security requirements. Swalwell has requested the Government Accountability office,s gao to conduct an assessment of the nations Airport Security perimeter needs. The last report was in 2009. Coming up at 8 45 well tell you what kind of technology swalwell thinks is needed to prevent breaches from happening. Reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. He says the genders of the baby chicks born weeks ago, two boys, two girls. The falcon parents were not happy to see him. Take a look. Reporter thats how stewart was greeted by fernando and claire. They were protecting their four new chicks that were hatched on april 9th. What stewart is doing is determining the Young Falcons gender and putting bands on them so researchers and the public can track them. Last year the pair gave birth to three healthy male falcon chicks. They left the nest and theres a small group of people that track the falcons progress. Id like to take it back live and i want to talk to Glenn Stewart about how things are going. How are you this morning . Great. Give us an update on the falcon chicks. They look good. Two boys two girls, theyll be pledging starting about the 16 16th of may. Talk to us about how important this work is. When we saw you last year 250 pairs of falcons out there that are tracked. Whats the update on the falcon population . Well, of course whats neat about this is we had two pairs 30, 40 years ago we could find in the state. Today we estimate 250 to 300 pairs. Its a great recovery, and being downtown san jose and having birds overhead is really remarkable. We never thought wed see anything like this. And the three male falcons that were born last year, how are they doing . We saw them all after they disbursed from their parental care. It seems like they just did great, and you know, you never know. Its a tough world out there, but whats really remarkable is all the people who are here watching the birds. They go out as a Recreational Activity and track them all over the bay area and find them. So that i think is pretty stunning. And they are an internet sensation. How are claire and fernando doing, the parents . They didnt cut us any slack today. You ought to talk to nicki my student. Did you get bitten at all . Are you hurt or anything . No, no injuries. Theyre not really Strong Enough to do much damage at this point. They grab ahold of you but not much damage. Okay. Nicki is one of my students, he comes with me when i do these claims, and i mean, if you want to ask him what its like to be a student, hes an undergraduate student and hes a big help to me. Anyway, you can wrap up. Really quickly, nicky how was it to experience this . Its a lot of fun. A cool chance to get up and close with the birds and do some hands on learning. Ktvus alex savidge has been on this since this broke at 6 30. You just talked with the San Francisco fire chief, and she says one factor has made this very tough. Reporter good morning to you, and the fire chief says that essentially there was no sort of Fire Protection barrier between any of these homes. Thats what allowed this fire to move so quickly from the original home over to a number of other neighboring homes. Again, a total of four houses were damaged in this huge fire that broke out this morning here in the ocean view neighborhood of San Francisco. A number of firefighters still out here right now. Smoke coming from some of these homes. The house that actually caught fire originally is the gray home where you can sort of see evidence of the fire toward the front of the house there. They are still working, though to get this fire completely under control. It spread from the first house to three other homes. There were two people who were taken to the hospital this morning, and we understand from the fire chief that was a man and woman who suffered smoke inhalation. This is what the fire looked like just about 6 30 this morning when it first started. Crews had to be called in from a number of different stations around the city, and all told about 90 firefighters were out here fighting the flames. There were at least a dozen people inside those four homes. They are still working to get an exact head count on the number of people who were inside those places when this fire started. But listen to fire chief joann hays wife talk about how this fire spread so quickly. How is it spreading. Very easily. Theres nothing in between. Those are common walls. So once the fire gets going, these are all wood frame structures, youre going to get a lot of damage. And we had heavy smoke and fog conditions. We had very little visibility initially when we got on scene. And firefighters say they still have to figure out exactly what may have started this fire. They dont know what the cause could be, but investigators will be coming in to try and figure that out. But, again, they are still working to knock this fire out completely, and obviously theyll be out here for quite some time. Firefighters will trying to make sure all the hot spots are put out in all four of these homes that were damaged this morning. The good news, no one seriously hurt this morning, although two people were taken to the hospital being treated for smoke inhalation. They are expected to be okay. And as far as the mess this has created in this neighborhood, again, we are on bright street between randolph and stanley, and just take a look over here, you can see here on randolph street fire trucks parked blocking the entire street. No one can get through in this area, and that includes the muni street cars that normally would be coming through here. Muni service obviously impacted in this area and we asked the fire chief about where that may be restored. And she couldnt give us an estimate on when muni could continue moving through this area. Firefighters will be out here for quite some time to get this fire fully under control. Live in San Francisco, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news.
