This is the home of state senator leland yee. Hes out right now on 500,000 bond after being arrested on federal criminal charges just about 24 hours ago. Lets talk about weather and traffic, steve. How does it look . Cloudy. We have a little bit of light rain. There will be some breaks. Mostly cloudy. Temperatures, 40s and 50s. Picking up a little bit. Napa county, and a little bit in Sonoma County. A far cry from yesterday. Over to saint st. Helena. From vallejo, hercules, walnut creek, it looks out to antioch. Theres not a lot here. There is a little bit still upstream and some of that is taking aim at santa cruz down to monterey. It will be one of those days where you get clouds and rain. 40s and 50s on the temperatures. They havent moved much. There is a little breeze. I know oakland has a west wind at 10 miles an hour. This may give some very light rain here mainly in the morning. I think we get more sun in the afternoon. Mostly cloudy, light rain. Breezy at times. Occasionally there might be moderate and burst of rain. But overall, more clouds than anything else. Temperatures upper 50s. Mainly low to mid60s. System coming in for saturday. Lets go to sal. Weve had some problems today. Its not as bad as yesterday with the rain. We have problems at the toll plaza. This commute is 30 minutes delayed between oakland and San Francisco. There are no major problems on the upper deck but it is slow getting up to Treasure Island which is typical. The trip on the bridge adds to the drive time of about 30, 40 minutes. Also the morning commute is also okay on 880. Its been windy out there. Not windy enough to spike up the warnings. My warning to you, you might feel gusty wind on the causeways and bridges. Santa cruz mountains has been a mess. Northbound 17 clearing an accident near the summit. The damage is done. They are making progress but the traffic is slow coming in over the valley. Let me take a look at some drive times. 280 looks okay from serramonte to san bruno. Drive times are not too bad considering what time of the morning it is. Lets go back to the desk. Thank you, sal. Leland yees political future is uncertain this morning. 24 hours after he was arrested on a slew of federal charges, among them, conspiracy to traffic firearms in exchange for Campaign Donations and six counts of fraud. Yee was one of 26 people arrested in fbi raids in three cities. Tara moriarty is live outside of yees home in the sunset district with reaction to the arrest and the charges. Good morning, tara. Reporter good morning. Still no movement from inside the yee family home. Were not sure if he is there or will make a comment this morning. We havent seen too many neighbors on street. Its relatively quiet, unlike the scene 24 hours ago when yee was arrested here. Can you tell me what your reaction is . Senator . Reporter yee walked out of the Federal Building on 500,000 bond yesterday, questions swirling around the multiple federal charges he faces. An outspoken advocate for gun control was arrested on charges that he conspired to traffic firearms and traded favors for bribes, Campaign Cash paid for men that turned out to be undercover agents. We asked his attorney if his client was innocent. We will always, as in efernry case, ent every case, enter not guilty pleas and then the case 25eubgs takes on a life of its own, with discovery being made, sometimes the case ends up in trial. Its too early to say what will happen in this case. Reporter yee appeared in front of a judge along with 18 other defendants being charged in the case. According to a 137page document, yee performed acts in exchange for donations from undercover fbi agents as he tried to dig out of a 70,000 debt after losing for office one year. Tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. More details on the criminal complaint. The 137pamg indictment names yee and 26 others. It involved a fiveyear fbi investigation. The indictment says yee accepted Campaign Donations from undercover fbi agents in exchange for political favors. Yee agreed to set up gun sales at an arms dealer that yee knew. Ironically, this happened while yee was pushing gun control legislation. There are three main players in the fbis case. First, state senator leland yee. He started his political career on the San Francisco school board. Served as city supervisor and then was elected to the state assembly. Also arrested yesterday. Raymond chow known as shrimp boy he served two decades in prison and once ran a chinatown gang and Keith Jackson is a former San Francisco School Board Member who helped yee with his political campaigns. New this morning, an apartment house fire in livermore hours ago has led to one man being airlifted to a hospital for treatment of serious burns. Brian flores live in livermore now to tell us how some other people in the area, brian, are also affected. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dave. Yeah, about the fire started around 1 00 this morning on the 900 block of murietta boulevard here in livermore. Its clear now. Firefighters have left hours ago. Red cross left about 30 minutes ago. But its still unclear how this fire started. 11 people are displayed this morning. We understand a fire investigator was brought in. Early indications from the firefighters say it doesnt appear to be suspicious. The man airlifted erbl yerl this morning to a nearby burn center was the openly person inside the Apartment Building where it started. Another at was damaged from this twoalarm fire. 11 people had to be evacuated. The firefighter was scene trying to put out the fire. By the time the firefighters got here, he had burns and respiratory problems which is why he had to be transported immediately. We had eight units, including one unit from Alameda County. The fire was knocked up knocked down in 25 minutes. No other injuries than the person in the apartment of origin. Reporter now, this morning, utility crews were called in to secure the gas and electric to all eight units of the apartment complex where this fire affected this morning. We understand that residents returned to gather belongings roughly around 3 30 this morning. Its been a rough fight for them as well. The red cross was here to find temporarily shelter thats displaced 11 residents displayed by the fire overall. Firefighters estimate about 100,000 worth of damage. The National Weather service confirmed that an ef0 tornado touched down in willows in glen county. You can see it right there in the video. Minor damage was reported near chico. No injuries have been reported. An ef0 has wind speeds up to 65 to 85 miles an hour. A neighborhood in roseville near sacramento also experienced an ef0 tornado. Thats a pretty cool spot. It hit between 6 15 and 6 20. The Roseville Fire Department reports about a dozen homes suffered roof damage but no one was hurt. A florida executive has pledged to give more than 12 million to Dominican University in san rafael. Andrew boraski on the schools board for ten years says the gift will be used to restructure the curriculum to focus on internships and practical work experience. 30 of students at Dominican University are the first in their families to go to college and half of them are minorities. Pretty well is relative. There are no crashes here on 24 between la fayette and oakland. So that part is okay. But its a little bit slow. The drive time is 15 minutes between two minutes which is not great but better than it could be. The traffic is backed up at the toll plaza for about a 40 minute delay. 20 minutes of that or so is at the toll plaza and then we have a little bit of slow traffic on the upper deck of the bay bridge coming into San Francisco. Weve had some slow traffic out there. Westbound 24 as we mentioned. 238 slow from from 880 slow from 238 to thornton and then 101 and 280 are slowing in the south bay. 85 slows from 87. 7 19. A livermore College Student who was killed last year in the drunk driving accident is given the gift of giving the gift of life to other families. She was riding her bike at chico state when hit and killed by a drunk driver. Her organs were donated to five people in Northern California including two babies. A south bay woman received her heart and is trying to carry out cristinas bucket list of things she wanted to accomplish. The heart is who you are, you know. You know, i just think that i just wanted to feel cristina again to hear cristinas heart beat and i did. Chestermans mother says cristina was a registered organ donor and an aspiring nurse. She would have wanted her organs on used to to help other people. Students at chico state are raising money for a clinic in cristinas name to be built in nigeria. There will be a vote tonight on a plan to build new homes in a section of newark that needs toxic cleanup. Truemark homes wants to build 244 houses near the intersection of Willow Street and enterprise drive. There are complications. City leaders say the 25acre site is contaminated with chlorine solvents which would have to be trucked away. But they add newark does need new housing. The once treacherous section of highway 1 known as devils slide will reopen as a serene walking trail. At 1 00 this afternoon, the trail that sits on the former 1. 3mile stretch of highway 1 will officially open to the public. A lot of cloud cover. A cloudy, mostly cloudy morning. I think well get partly cloudies later on. A couple of reports in lake county, clearlake, pretty good. Theres decent rain up to the north. Towards Hidden Valley lake and im sure middletown. A little bit into Mendocino County. Northwest Sonoma County, theres been reports. After that, its kind of hit and miss towards the east bay. That is not that heavy but there is a little bit. La fayette, crockett, clayton. Picked up. 37. Other areas, not that much. Most of this should favor to the north. A lot of cloud cover, maybe more rain moving into santa cruz. 40ed and 50s on the 40s and 50s on the temperatures. A little bit of a westerly breeze. At the bay bridge, we have a 30, 40minute drive time into San Francisco. It has been just moderate on the bridge. Heavy and then it gets better and then it gets heavy again. Its been up and down on the span. At least we dont have any crashes. 880 you can still get a nice commute. This commute doesnt get busy until about 8 30. You might want to get in front of the crowd. 88 south is slow from hayward to fremont. San jose we have a lot of slow traffic. 85 northbound is slow all the way up into cupertino. There was an accident northbound 85 at fremont. But the traffic is already slow all the way back to 87, as i mentioned. Thats kind of normal. 280 is slow at 17. 101 is slow from about the capitol expressway. Also want to mention that getting to the peninsula is not bad in the silicon valley. Highway 17 still has issues. It has been much slower than normal because of an earlier crash at the summit. This morning you are gonna have to double that drive time. Back to the desk. This morning, hes facing several federal criminal charges of conspiracy and fraud. Senator yees fellow lawmakers are already calling on him to resign after his stunning arrest. Alex savidge is live in San Francisco with more on the uncertain political future of leland yee. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning. The veteran politician was considered a frontrunner for the race for secretary of state. Now many of his colleagues at the capitol are calling for his immediate resignation following those fbi raids yesterday, including one here at senator yees office in San Francisco. I want to on behalf of my colleagues today call on senator yee to resign. Leave. Dont burden your colleagues and this Great Institution with your ubl interests. Leave. Reporter thats Darrell Steinberg appalled by yees arrest yesterday and the accusations of public corruption and gun trafficking. Senator stein berg said if yee doesnt resign by tomorrow, his fellow lawmakers will vote to suspend him. Yee represents district 8 here in california which covers much of San Francisco and parts of san mateo county. Hes had a political ka dreer thats spanned three decades. His friends and colleagues at the capitol were stunned by his arrest and had trouble making sense of these very serious charges. I understand that mr. Yee is in custody. Thats a very, very heavy thing to react to and try to sort it out. Reporter and senator yees arrest is a big blow to californias californias Democratic Party. State senators ron calderon and wright are on leave facing corruption charges. As for senator yee, the Senate President has removed him from all Committee Assignments. If he wont step down from office, his colleagues will vote to suspend him. I reached out to his spokesperson. We have yet to hear back. They say the image of him in handcuffs, thats etched in the minds of the public. For the primaries in june, dwree, who yee, who was a candidate for secretary of state, doesnt have enough time to repair his image. It will be difficult for him to stay in the race and win, not after the level of charges that have been brought against him. Analysts still expect a democrat to eventually win the seat with the Democratic Party still continuing to lock up all statewide races. An emeryville man accused in a drunk driving crash that killed a marine is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon. Prosecutors say alexander yawn was drunk when his car slammed into the motorcycle of adam silva in fremont on tuesday morning. Silva had only been home a month after serving a yearlong tour in afghanistan. Prosecutors say yawn was spotted behaving belligerently at a fastfood restaurant and running a red light before the crash. Medical marijuana dispensaries may soon be able to open up near schools in San Francisco. The Planning Commission is considering a proposal today to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to move closer to schools, Child Care Centers and parks. Most dispensaries right now are in the soma, castro and Mission Districts. There havent been allowed in more they havent been allowed in more residential areas. The current restrictions are forcing some patients to travel long distances to obtain medical marijuana. Happening today cinderella verses cinderella. They made my prediction go right so far. Im hoping they keep it up and go to the elite 8. Shock and disbelief, parent reaction after learning that an accused child molester was hired to teach at their school. Pam cook is in the newsroom with the action being taken to keep kids safe. Board meeting called for big changes after a teacher was arrest and charged with child sexual abuse. Dont think this cant happen again if were not vigilant. This can happen again. The board for the west Contra Costa Unified School District Voted last night to require all new hires have background and fingerprint checks. The district will also require phone calls to previous employers. But the new rules on hiring came with an apology from the boards president and questions about why this has not been done all along. Now, the vote comes on the wheels of the district hiring teacher ronald guinto. He was arrested and charged with multiple counts of child sexual abuse two months after starting his job as a teacher at mira vista Elementary School. The alleged abuse happened during field trips while he was a teacher at his Previous School which were told is a Charter School outside the district. More than 2,000 people sit out in heavy rain yesterday honoring the life of a Mendocino County sheriffs deputy killed in the line of duty. Many people in fort bragg took off work to line the streets for a Police Procession and public memorial honoring the deputy. He was killed two weeks ago in the shootout with a suspect who was wanted for a murder and carjacking in oregon. 7 46. This morning, 90 people are still unaccounted for after a deadly landslide in Washington State and search crews say theres little hope of finding more survivors. 25 deaths have now been confirmed from saturdays massive landslide that devastated the small town of oso. About 55 miles northeast of seattle. Thick mud and debris are slowing the recovery effort. Had the opportunity to visit the slide area today. I must tell you in my 44 years of public service, nothing in the world could have prepared me for what i saw. The disaster scene is being prepared for the damage left behind by the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens where 57 people were killed. Its possible some victims will never be recovered because its too dangerous to search through the mud. Alaska parking 50 years ago today when one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded shook things up. It happened this day in 1964. 139 people were killed when a magnitude 9. 2 quake triggered a tsunami on the west coast. It has the second biggest quake ever recorded. A 9. 2. Hard to imagine. Yeah. Police say she was walking on a campus path last thursday before 6 00 a. M. When a bicyclist knocked her down. The bicyclist did stay there at the scene and is being questioned by investigators. Police say the bicyclist is not a student. People who text and drive in San Francisco or on the peninsula may end up seeing their faces on a billboard. A bay area man noticed a lot of distracted drivers as he was riding in a carpool to work. Brian singer decided to document how many people were texting and driving. As you can see, he was handcuffed and taken to court. Yee is charged with conspiracy to traffic firearms in exchange for Campaign Donations and six counts of fraud. Leland yees arrest has sent shock waves through San Franciscos political community. Tara moriarty is live in front of yees sunset district home with reaction from yees attorney. Good morning, tara. [audio difficulties] weve lost connection with tara. But shes been outside of the home of leland yee in the sunset district. Last she reported, there was no sighting of leland yee. Were not even sure if hes in the house. Well try to establish connection with tara coming up. The 137page indictment names yee and 26 others. It involves a fiveyear fbi investigation and the indictment says yee accepted Campaign Donations from undercover fbi agents in exchange for political favors. Also according to the indictment, yee agreed to set ulmultimillion dollar gun sales between an undercover agent and an arms dealer that yee knew. There are three main players in the case. First state senator leland yee. He started his political career on the San Francisco school board. He served as a city supervisor, then was elected to the state assembly. Also arrested yesterday, raymond chow known as shrimp boy. He served two decades in prison and once ran a chinatown gang. And Keith Jackson. Hes a former San Francisco School Board Member, he helped leland yee with his political campaigns. We have posted the entire 137 page criminal complaint against senator yee. 8 04. New this morning, an Apartment Fire in livermore just hours ago has led one man to be airlifted for serious burns. Brian flores is in livermore to let us know how other residents are being effected this morning and video of the fire damage. Reporter we received the video moments ago. But this fire started earlier this morning around 1 00 this morning here on in livermore in livermore. The fire scene is clear. Fire crews left a while ago. So did the red cross. There are plenty of residents who are shaken up over what happened. This video was shot by a person who lives nearby. You can see the flames burning out of an upstairs apartment unit. Many residents heard the commotion, came running out to see what was going on. Some pulled out their cell phone to take video. One man from downstairs was said to have been knocking on peoples doors to get others out. There was damage from inside two of the apartments damaged earlier this morning. Basically, everything inside charred, appliances, furnl chur. Still unclear how this fire started but we understand a fire investigator was brought in. Early indications say the fire didnt appear to be suspicious. The man airlifted to a nearby hospital was the only person inside the apartment where it originated. By the time firefighters got there, he had minor burns to his hand and face but the more serious concern, he had respiratory problems as a result of the fire which is why he had to be transported immediately. We spoke to a person who shot the video and said the fire was pretty bad. You know, the people the guy sleeping in this apartment down here came out. It was really bad. Reporter now, firefighters say the victim was scene outside. May have been trying to extinguish the fire. Overall, about 35 firefighters were here mainly from the Livermore Pleasanton fire department. But also a crew from Alameda County was here as well. For a time, murrieta boulevard was blocked off so they could airlift the victim. The red cross is helping the victims trying to find them shelter. The National Weather service confirmed a tornado did touch down northeast of sacramento last night. Funnel clouds were spotted in roseville. The Weather Service says the tornado hit between 6 15 and 6 20 in the evening. The Roseville Fire Department reported about a dozen homes in the area suffered some roof damage. A couple of homes were hit by debris from barbecue grills. The path of damage stretched 20 yard wide, 300 yards long. At this point, no injuries have been reported. Dont forget. Terri shiavo was a woman from florida at the center of a Long Court Battle over whether to take out her feed be tube after she was diagnosed from being in a vegetative state. Terry shiavo died in 2005. 8 24. A livermore College Student who was killed last year in a drunk driving accident is giving the gift of life to other families. Police say christina chesterman was riding her bike at chico state when hit by a drunk driver. Her organs were donated to five people in Northern California, including two babies. A south bay woman received her heart and is now trying to carry out christinas bucket list of things she wanted to accomplish. The heart is who you are, you know. You know, i just think that i just wanted to feel christina again to hear christinas heart beat again and i did. Chester mans mother said she was a registered organ donor and aspiring nurse. She would have wanted her organs to be used to help others. Students at chico state are also raising money for a clinic in christine nons name to be christine nons name to be built in nigeria. People gathered in martinez to remember another young life cut short. Kate hopkins, 20 years old, died march 17th from injuries suffered while skateboarding in yosemite valley. It comes after two other senators, ron calderon and rod wright remain on leave, also facing corruption charges. As for yee, the president president has removed him from all Committee Assignments effective immediately. If he wont step down, his colleagues will vote to suspend him as soon as tomorrow. Ive reached out to yees press secretary for the response for calls to resignation, were still waiting to hear back. Political analysts say it will be hard, maybe impossible, for yee to recover from these serious accusations. They say the images of him in handcuffs is etched in the mind of the public. With the primary in june, yee who was a candidate for secretary of state doesnt have enough time to repair his image. It will be difficult after this for him to stay in the race and win. Not after the level of charges that have been brought against him. Now, the analysts still expect a democratic to eventually win the seat with the Democratic Party continuing to lock up all of the statewide races. Here are some of the penalties he faces prison sentences up to 20 years for each of the six charges. He could also get five more years behind bars for a 7th charge for gun trafficking. Yee, an outspoken advocate for gun control and open government was arrested on charges that he conspired to traffic firearms and traded favors in sacramento for bribes, Campaign Cash paid by men who turned out to be undercover federal agents. We spoke to a neighbor who doesnt know yee but was still shocked by the allegations. Yeah, that seems very out of character for somebody . His position. Surprising, especially in this neighborhood. The boards vote comes after a teacher was hired at Mira Vista School even as he was being investigated for multiple charges for child sexual abuse. Weve all been very, very lucky Nothing Happened other than the fact that we learned a whole bunch of about what we need to do. I think this can be a lesson to the thousands of School Districts. I want to make sure that as a parent that they know that were concerned. The board admits guintos former school was not even contacted before he was hired to teach in the district. It seems to be a districtby district policy. Teachers are not always required to undergo a background check and fingerprinting at a new job once theyve gone through the initial checks to get their teaching license. Now, heres some good advice.
