Squirrels and gophers are wreaking havoc on one berkeley park. The problem goes beyond the holes they are creating. Brian flores has more about how this is aaffecting the water in San Francisco bay. Reporter were live at Cesar Chavez Park where the city says the thousands of gophers and squirrels are wreaking havoc on the park but also could be contributing to toxins getting into the bay. Heres the deal Cesar Chavez Park used to be a landfill into the early 90s when it was turned into a park. On the sur farce things appear to be surface things appear to be fine but underneath gophers and squirrels are digging holes and when it rains, water goes through the holes and takes whatever is beneath that in the bay. Thats according to the city. The city plans to hire an outside contractor to trap the thousands of contractors and squirrels here and get rid of them. We spoke with park walkers who say pollution is one thing but overall, the squirrels and gophers are not a problem. I think it might be problem attic with all of the dogs that come here. I mean, i dont know. I understand if if its causing pollution that would be a problem. But theres so many aspects to take into account. The people who come here, the dogs who come here that could be a problem that would be a problem for them. In the past, the city has done a few things to try to get rid of the gophers and squirrels including bringing in rafter homes and owls that didnt work. The city brings in this animal contractor and plan to fence off the park, one acre at a time and trap the animals. Its unclear whether they will let them go somewhere else or even kill them. According to the article as well in the contra costa times, they say the animal contractors will let out 24 traps in the acres they plan to do. Its unclear when the work will begin.
