We had a lot more 20s. Theres a few. But more around yesterday. About 3 to 5 degrees warmer. Santa rosa flirting with that upper 20 right at 30. I think ken woot and sebastopol are in the upper 20s. Fairfield, concord, 35. 35 blossom hill. Except for a few high clouds and hazy skies, not much change. We do get an easterlies breeze easterly breeze. Santa clara valley over to santa cruz, 70s. Heres sal. Right now, we do have a look at some Police Activity. Thats blocking the third street street car line, the t third car line as you get in the district. This is a good area to adjust your commute if you take the t third into downtown. You may want to get take it farther up. Ktvus Tara Moriarty is on the way to see exactly what the Police Activity is and to confirm whats going on there. If you are a commuter, you need to know that. Bay bridge looks pretty good westbound. Its definitely lighter than usual. Here it is after 7 00. We dont have a big backup at all. Theres a slight delay before you get on the bridge. Thats about it. 280 in san jose. New this morning, were just a little more than 24 hours into the year 2014 and police in san jose already investigating that citys first homicide of the year. A man was shot and killed in East San Jose earlier this morning. Ktvus janine de la vega live out there with the very latest from the police. What are they telling you now, janine . Reporter well, police tell me that theyve been going door to door for the last several hours talking to neighbors and they still say they dont have any valuable leads. I want to show you whats going on behind me where you can see crime scene technicians and officers out here investigating. Now, some information that may be helpful later is that they found that the victim was wearing an ankle bracelet. That may come in to be helpful later after they identify him. Police say the man was found face down in the driveway at a home on East San Antonio just before 1 30 this morning. Several people heard gunshots but didnt bother to call it into 911. It was someone passing by who spotted the man down and called it in later. Police say it appears he was shot ast least once. Firefighters and paramedics performed cpr but were unable to save him. He died at the scene. Homicide detectives are canvassing the scene trying to gather as much evidence as we can. We dont know if it was targeted if there was a retaliation, we have no motive, we have no information leading us to any motive at this point. Reporter police say it appears hes latino and may be in his late 20s. Once hes identified and they found out more information about his background including why hes wearing that ankle bracelet, it may help investigators learn to see what was going on in his life. This area of East San Antonio is known to be near sam gang hot spots but investigators say its too early to tell if this is gangrelated. Police will remain here on the scene at least for another hour. Again, the coroner still has not arrived yet because they are still conducting their investigation. While 2014 is off to a deadly start, 2013 was actually better than the year before. In 2013, there were 43 homicides reported compared to 46 in 2012. It is 7 05. We are following breaking news out of San Francisco. Right now, there is a Major Police Operation underway. Its taking place at third street and palou avenue in the Bayview District. Tara moriarty has just arrived on the scene. Tara, whats going on there . Reporter well, it looks like s. W. A. T. Teams are just getting ready to pull out. If you take a look behind me, were at third and kirkwood. Theres the liquor store called the star market. Around 6 00 this morning, we know that s. W. A. T. Teams were actually sawing the metal gates off the entrance to try to get inside. We dont know exactly what they are looking for. We did speak to police but they are remaining pretty tight lipped about everything. You can see the bus that the the train going by here, muni, initially the t had been shut down for some time for about an hour. Were told all trains and buses are up and running. Now, again, we dont know exactly what they were looking for but it appears that there were two s. W. A. T. Teams and both of them are now one of them has left. The other is in the process of leaving. Now they are beginning to comb through the market looking for whatever it is that they are looking for. As soon as we get more information, well pass it along to you. Live from from San Francisco, im Tara Moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. Investigators strongly suspect arson in a fire at the chinese consulate in San Francisco. The suspicious fire first reported last night at the consulate building on laguna street. The consulate official says someone got out of a minivan, splashed two buckets of gasoline on the front door, then set them on fire. The flames caused major damage to that door but no one was hurt. The chinese consulate did release a statement. Here it is. It calls a suspected arson attack a Violent Crime targeted at the chinese consulate institution in the United States. Federal agents will meet with San Francisco police in about 90 minutes from now. They will examine the surveillance tape as they continue to search for suspects. Happening today the California Supreme Court will decide whether to grant a law license to a man living in the u. S. Illegally who graduated from law school and passed the state bar exam. 36yearold Sergio Garcia was brought to the u. S. Illegally by his parents when he was a toddler. He applied for citizenship in 1994 and is still waiting for his application to be processed. His effort to get a law license is supported by state bar officials and californias attorney general who says sit senship status is not a requirement to receive a California Law license. There are signs that john boehner may be open to limited changes to the countrys immigration laws in the coming months. Boehner recently hired a long time immigration adviser to arizona senator john mccain who has long backed immigration reform. Immigration reform advocates say the hiring boehner the hiring plus boehners recent criticism of tea party influence on the Republican Party indicates hes serious about making changes to the immigration system. A vigil will be held tonight in oakland for a 13 yearold boy shot and killed new years eve. Lee weathersbee the third was shot on walnut creek street. His mother said he was walking home with two other boys from a party at the boys and girls club on international boulevard. Reportedly, two young men in a dark care pulled up and started shooting. The victims family thinks it was as case of mistaken identity. Its just a senseless death. Like i said, he was a good kid. Everybody knows he was a good kid. A vigil for lee will be held at 5 00 tonight on the street where the 8th grader was shot. So far, police say they have no motive and no arrests have been made. Helicopter to take us home thanks, everyone they are happy. The trapped people stuck in the ice on ten days inant ar in antarctica are being res lieud. 5 rescued. 52 passengers are safe aboard an australian icebreaker. They were ferried there in groups of 12 over the past couple of hours on a helicopter like that one there from a chinese ship. Meantime, in montana, an avalanche yesterday killed a man riding a snowmobile. It happened yesterday morning at the galaton national forest. First responders were not able to recover the mans body, so they are gonna try again this morning. Two other men also caught in the avalanche were not seriously hurt. 7 09. A strong winter storm is bearing down on the midwest and northeast. New york city may get 10 inches of snow while a blizzard warning covers long island. Boston has already declared a state of emergency. They could see two feet of snow. Temperatures are expected to fall below zero. Happening now the storm has already canceled at least 1100 flights nationwide. There are 13 cancellations at sfo. Today, San Francisco begins the program that reminds us all the Holiday Season is just about over. The city will officially kick off San Franciscos annual Christmas Tree collection recycling program. Residents are being urged to leave their Christmas Trees out on the regular trash pickup days between now and january 15th. People living in San Francisco usually recycle about 500 tons of Christmas Trees every year. Take all of the decorations off first. A Memorial Service for 17year old claire davis was held yesterday at an equestrian complex in denver. Horse jumping was one of her loves. He didnt know what he was doing. Claires father says the world was a better place with his daughter in it. That memorial was attended by many people including olympic and cal swimmer, missy franklin. 7 15. We have new details about a vacaville couple on opposite ends of the law. The husband and wife are now both accused of selling Illegal Drugs and weapons to undercover agents. Investigators say 35yearold sara kilo was a chp dispatcher. Her husband belonged to the vallejo chapter of the hells angels. Authorities arrested her on charges of bribery and possessing methamphetamine for sale. Her husband was arrested on charges of selling an Assault Rifle and stolen military equipment to undercover agents. A preliminary hearing is set in two weeks in yolo county. Members of oscar grants family and their supporters are marking a sad anniversary. Yesterday, they gathered outside of the fruitvale b. A. R. T. Station in oakland for a somber memorial. It came exactly five years after oscar grant was shot and killed at that same b. A. R. T. Station. Those attending the memorial released white doves as they expressed their hope for peace on the streets of oakland. To the families who have lost loved ones like i have myself, no one knows the pain. No one knows the hurt, no one knows the suffering that goes on behind closed doors. The grant family will continue to hold these vigils each new years day to remember the tragedy on january 1st, 2009. Bart police officer, johannes mehserle, said he meant to tase grant when he shot and killed him during a chaotic situation on the b. A. R. T. Platform. Americans begin the new year with a very negative view of their government expressing little hope elected officials can or will solve the countrys biggest problems. A new poll by the a. P. Center for Public Affairs Research Found that 70 of americans lack confidence in the governments ability to make progress on the important problems and issues facing the country in 2014. Americans do feel a little better about local and state elected leaders with 45 at least moderate lit confident in their state moderately confident in their State Government and 54 in their local government. And sal, now weve got a water main break in Castro Valley . Thats right. We have a water main break. Its being fixed by east bay m. U. D. On stanton and miramar avenue. Its certainly not the unusual backup but anything can change. There are more cars on the road than the last few days but not quite up to the regular commute volume. This mornings commute looks good on northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. 7 19. Lets go to steve. I think i counted three cars yesterday, sal. Pretty quiet. Pretty quiet. Mostly clear skies. Whats new . Occasion le we get higher occasionally we get higher clouds. A little bit of an offshore breeze i know up in the Oakland Hills over to pacifica. Brandon said they are breezy over here. Watch how the clouds come close to us and get chewed up. Theres patchy fog. But another sunny, nice day. Air quality not the best. Nothing, you know, we havent heard before. Cold air at the surface. You go up in the atmosphere and all of a sudden, you hit a very, very strong what we call inversion. Much warmer air. So that just traps everything underneath it. Its really warm. If this pattern were with us in june, july and august, we would be heating up. High pressure, good, old fashioned. Its stuck. Its not moving. 30s on the temperatures. 50 in San Francisco. A little bit of a breeze for some. Its holding up a few locations. Oakland airport, 37. 39 up in eureka again. 32 redding. 21 in tahoe. A lot of moisture in the deep south. This is all coming together with another low coming out of indiana and illinois. The combination of these two are all taking aim towards much of the great lakes. And also in the northeast especially boston, new york. There are going to be some very active blizzard conditions there, the next 24, 36 hours. Except for high clouds and hey city skies, its sunny. Theres a good bet there are stanford fans not happy this morning. The upset at the rosebowl that upset a lot of people. Pot stores in colorado  getting ready for another brisk day of business. Yesterday, colorado became the first state in the nation to allow the sale of marijuana for recreational use. Some colorado pot shops had to shut their doors due to long lines and short supply. In other places, pot prices rose to more than 500 an ounce. Anyone 21 or older can buy up to an ounce of marijuana at a license store. By the way, Denver International airport put up signs warning travelers they cannot take marijuana home with them. Prices are skyrocketing for many generic drugs. Thats causing pharmacists to turn away customers. Pharmacists say reimbursements from Insurance Companies have not kept pace with the soaring price of many generic drugs. Yesterdays rosebowl, started well. Stanford jumped to a 177 lead but the cardinal could not hold on against the big 10 championship spartans. Michigan rallied. They beat stanford, 2420. They sealed the win with a fourth down stop. Stanfords record in the rosebowl is now 6 wins, 7 losses and one tie. [ cheers ] many stanford fans watched the game at local bars. The old pro in palo alto was packed with cardinal fans. But despite the loss, some new stanford students say it was a memorable season. Were super sad. So close. So close. Thats when stanford was leading. A mysterious discovery made at a popular east bay park. Well tell you how it was found. And you are back as well. Yep. Good morning. We have mainly clear skies, 25 miles an hour up in the Oakland Berkeley hills. Some of that heading to pacifica. It will be another sunny, nice day. No doubt about it. That offshore breeze equals 70s to santa cruz, capitola and gilroy. High pressure here, very warm air trapping thing. Another hazy day. 30s, 40s, 50. Easterly breeze. Saw a couple of locations in San Francisco. It looks nice there except for higher clouds. Mostly sunny. Its sunny. Chilly, cold morning. Afternoon temperatures. Upper 60s to 70s. A lot of low mid60s. Another day of above average temperatures. Heres sal. Were looking at a commute thats very nice in comparison to what we normally see as we look at interstate 880. Southbound 880 at high street bord of a word of a disabled motorcycle. Theyve called the chp to make sure the person riding that bike is okay. The westbound bay bridge is better than you normally see it. Traffic is moving well. Its getting more crowded by the day as weve seen, the christmas week was really quiet. Most of this request is quiet. We week is quiet. We can see slowing in the key spots. Nothing major. 580, 680 that traffic looks good with some brisk slowing in dublin. Back to the desk. Happening now a water main break in Castro Valley has just been fixed. Ktvus Claudine Wong is out there right now to tell us more on the mess that was caused out there. Good morning, claudine. Reporter good morning, dave. Yes. This is a welcomed sight for folks in this Castro Valley neighborhood. You can see the crews just putting the finishing touches on the area where theyve focused their repair work. In the last couple of minutes we saw them turn the water back on to this neighborhood. Its been without water since this break that happened around 1 30 a little closer to 2 00 this morning. This is stanton. About 50 people were without water. East bay m. U. D. Tells us it was a 6inch water main that broke. They have now fixed it. Again, within the last couple of minutes, we saw them turn the water back on. So certain learn residents happy that this morning they could get the hot shower that theyve been waiting hours for. The original estimates were maybe 8 00 or 10 00 this morning. So they made some quick work of this. Got this all fixed up. Got the water back on here in Castro Valley. Live in Castro Valley, Claudine Wong, ktvu channel 2 news. All right. 7 32. The Alameda County Coroners Office says there may be new information later on today about that human skull found yesterday in the Oakland Hills. It was found yesterday evening in tilden regional park. The skull was spotted off grisly peek boulevard. It was sitting on top of a paper plate surrounded by a silver chain. People who use the park were surprised and concerned. Go in with my family and enjoy the view and try not to think about, you know, something terrible like that. At this point, we have no word on the name of the person that skull belonged to. The origin or the age. Its at the Coroners Office right now. Several doctors are expected to examine it later this morning. 7 33. A new year is bringing new hope for the family of jahi mcmath. Shes the 13yearold oakland girl declared brain dead after tonsil surgery. Jahis family is still fighting to move her out of oakland Childrens Hospital to a Long Term Care facility. Jahis uncle says theyve found an ambulance and an plane to transport jahi but they still have not secured a facility. A judge ruled that no surgeries can be performed on jahi and three doctors have declared her brain dead. Still looks good. She still looks like jahi. So that keeps us going. The family attorney is perpetuating a very tragic hoax on the public as well as misleading this family. Jahi mcmath is deceased. Jahi had her tonsils taken out december 9th but suffered complications and was declared brain dead three days later. Childrens hospital is under court order to keep her on life support until january 7th. A private investigator from new jersey says shes now volunteering to help the family and launch her own investigation into the hospital. Happening now, a strong winter storm is bearing down on the midwest and northeast. New york city may get 10 inches of snow while a blizzard warning covers long island. That storm has led to thousands of flights being canceled and bay area airports are being affected. Ktvus brian flores is at sfo with a number of cancellations there so far. Good morning, brian. Ifl just spoke with the airport duty manager here at sfo e says sfo far, there are at least ten cancellations for flights heading to the northeast especially with this winter storm bearing down on the east coast as we speak. Airport Officials Say that American Airlines which typically leaves later on in the morning, they just canceled two flights to the east coast as well. But we are in the middle of winter. Were not seeing much winter here, the midwest, northeast part of the u. S. Is definitely seeing it. More than 1100 flints have been canceled. Were hearing chicago, bearing the brunt of the delays and cancellations trying to get flights out of there. But here, cities and airports like newark, new jersey, boston and j. F. K. And new york will be most likely affected this morning. And then most of the airlines are taking the situation literally minute by minute. I understand the visibility is down to a quarter mile with blowing snow. United airlines has been proactive on it. Theyve decided to cancel their flights into boston, newark and j. F. K. But they are doing is on a case bycase basis. They are watching the storm. Reporter again, sfo airport Officials Say so far at this point, united airlines, as he mentioned, jetblue and American Airlines have canceled flights to the northeast. Check with your carrier this morning. They say also that American Airlines will be asells the situation assessing the situation as necessary. They leave later on in the morning. We checked in with oak and san jose. We have yet to oakland and san jose. We have yet to hear back on cancellations. If you are heading towards sfo for flights back there, check with your carrier first. Barts board of directors expected to vote on a contract with two unions. This comes after the disputed family leave provision that b. A. R. T. Says was mistakenly left in the contract that ended a strike back in november. Barts board is expected to approve the contract. They will meet in oakland at 9 00 a. M. The Bay Area Bike Share Program is about to expand. In the fix couple of months, 300 bikes will be added to the program, including 150 of them in San Francisco. And new bike share stations are expected to open in the mission, castro, hayes valley and mission bay neighborhoods. The demand for its flowing. And the changes could happen as early as the spring. Police in eureka are investigating the killing of a popular priest. The reverend eric freeds body was found yesterday morning at eurekas st. Bernards church after he failed to show up for morning mass. Eurekas mayor says the priest has become an important part of the Community Since he arrived at the church three years ago. A tremendous person. This is absolutely a tremendous lost not only for the parish but for our community in general. Eureka police say the priests car is missing. They are currently looking for the car but have not yet identify fid any suspects or a identified any suspects or a motive for the killing. A 3monthold boy is fighting for his life now after a tragic accident in fremont on new years eve that killed his young mother. Last night, about 100 people were at at this vigil to remember ashley, 19 years old. She was hit by a truck new years eve while walking on mowry and paseo parkway with her sister and son. I dont want to say it was her time. I dont believe it was. I just dont. Things like this happen. Thats why they are called tragedies. Police say that intersection is one of the most dangerous intersections in fremont. The driver is cooperating with police and is not expected to face charges. Theres a new study out by the federal government on the risk of specific activities that distract drivers. For Young Drivers the numbers are really dramatic. The risk of a crash or a near miss is more than eight times higher than when they were dialing a phone number and eight times higher when reaching for something besides the phone. Looking across the road, like an accident, that increased the risk by four times. They say eating as you drive, that raised the risk by three times. 7 39. Hackers have posted phone numbers and user names of millions of users on the internet. Hablgers say they want to hackers they say want to highlight the weakness in the security. This is popular with teens and young adults. Photos and videos that are shared with the service disappear shortly after they are disappeared. Skype is dealing with a Security Breach after hackers took over its twitter account. Hackers posted several fake tweets warning users not to use email from microsoft which owns skype. Hackers accessed the companys Facebook Page and blog. The Electronic Army of syria has claimed responsibility. They are behind recent attacks on the New York Times and twitter. Shares of fiat are up following the 4. 3 billion dollar deal to gain full control of chrysler. Investors are welcoming the news that the italian automaker will buy the remaining 41 of chrysler. It does not already own it. Fiats shares rose 15 after the deal was announced. A 4yearold boy in fair condition this morning after a new years eve crash in San Francisco that killed his older sister and injured his mother. This happened at polk and ellis in the citys tenderloin neighborhood. Police say the family was in the crosswalk when the driver of a gray honda pilot turned into them. Investigators say that driver was behind the wheel of an uber ride sharing vehicle. He was taken into custody shortly after that crash. Pedestrians had the rightof way. Unfortunately, as a result of the drives action and drivers action theres one fatality. Authorities have identified the girl who identified as of yearold sophia lu. The last time we checked, the mother of the children was listed in critical condition. 7 45. New this morning, doctors say the condition of former israeli Prime Minister ariel sharon has deteriorated sharply. The 85yearold has been in a coma for the past eight years after suffering a stroke. Israeli media reports hes suffering from kidney failure now. Sharon is known for withdrawalling israeli troops and settlers from the gaza strip which ended 38 years of Israeli Military control in the region. One person was captured but another one is still on the loose after another car chase in San Francisco. Last night, around 7 30, police tried to pull over a car that matched the description of a vehicle involved in an armed robbery. That pursuit lasted several minutes before the suspects car crashed into a pole at 22nd and connecticut avenues street in the Bayview District. One suspect was arrested. The other one got away. Police say the suspects threw a gun out the window of the car but the weapon was later recovered. 7 55. Health officials in marin county say the flu season has started. New this morning, San Jose Police very busy investigating the citys first homicide of the year a man was shot and killed earlier this morning. Ktvus janine de la vega is live in san jose this morning. Where are the police now in this investigation . Reporter yeah, they are still talking to witnesses and collecting evidence. Now, the coroner just left about 20 minutes ago after examining the body out here at the scene. Now, police have been here nearly sev hon urs. The body was found in the driveway of a home on East San Antonio near 33rd e it doesnt appear the 33rd street. It doesnt appear the victim lives here. The man was found face down in the driveway before 1 30 this morning. Several people heard gunshots. Didnt call it in into 911. Someone passing by 45 minutes later spotted the man and called it in. Firefighters and paramedics performed cpr but were unable save him to save him. The man died at the scene. This is an area known as the gang hot spot but its unknown if the shooting is gang related. Some who grew up here say they wouldnt be surprised if it was. Probably gangrelated, especially in this neighborhood right here. This neighborhood back then wasnt like this before and now its getting like this because of the kids nowadays making the days like 3 3rd, they are 33rd street, they are making it what you want it to be. A northerner or southerner. It will start to retaliate. Reporter its unknown, again, if the victim lives somewhere else in the neighborhood or what he was doing here early this morning. Police say it appears hes latino in his late 20s and he was wearing an ankle bracelet. He has not been identified yet but that may provide clues as to his background. At this point, the motive is unknown in this case. Theres no suspect description. There was just a shift change between the officers, the day shift officers they just came out here to the scene which is an indication that, again, police are still going to be out here for at least, again, another hour or so to investigate. While 2014 is off to a deadly start, 2013 was actually better than the year before. In 2013, there were 43 homicides compared to 46 in 2012. New this morning, just a short time ago, a San Francisco s. W. A. T. Team converged on a liquor store and market in the citys Bayview District. We brought you a live report from the scene. Its believed those officers were involved in a drug or weapons investigation. At one point, they cut through the metal gates outside of the liquor store. Its not clear if police made any arrests. The incident did affect muni service in the bayview for about 30 minutes. But muni is now back on schedule. Investigators hope Surveillance Video will lead to an arrest in a suspected arson attack on the chinese consulate in San Francisco. The fbi has now taken the lead on this investigation. There were several agencies out there last night. It was a pretty busy scene. You can see the scorch marks on the building. The damage pretty extensive. The burn marks going all the way up the stucco three stories high. In half an hour, arson investigators will be meeting with police to look at surveillance footage. That camera could provide important clues. Apparently the consulate only released one copy of the tape. Arson has not seen it yet. Now, the fire broke out around 9 30 last night near on the here on the front stops on gary and laguna. Firefighters had the flames out in six minutes. A person got out of a minivan, parked at the entrance and poured two buckets of gasoline on the front door before torching it. Luckily, no one was hurt. San Francisco Police and fire officials are working with the fbi to figure out who is responsible. Now, a consulate spokesperson has called the attack a Violent Crime targeted at the consulate in the United States. We contacted joanne heyswhite. Now, his effort to get a law license is supported by state bar officials and californias attorney generals who says citizenship status is not a requirement for getting a law license. There are signs that john boehner may be open to limited changes to the nations immigration laws in the coming months. Boehner recently hired a long time immigration adviser to john mccain who has long supported immigration reform. Ingration reform advocates say the hiring and also John Boehners recent criticism of the tea party influence on the Republican Party are signs that he may be serious about making changes to the immigration system. 8 07. It was brought here last night from up at tilden park and several doctors are expected to look at it today as they try to get more information on where exactly it came from. Police went up there. They said they found it on plain site. It was on a paper plate surrounded by beads. They took custody of it. That area is vista point. There was a family up there taking a look at the view when they saw the Police Officers certainly a little disturbed by the discovery. At this point, its still unclear, again, where this came from there were obvious indications it was put there on purpose. They do say at this point, it does not look to be native american in origin but where it came from is still a mystery. Were hoping to have more answers on that. Jahis uncle says theyve found an ambulance and a plane to transport jahi but they still havent secured a care facility. When she found the mans body in the driveway. She ran in and told her husband. They have no idea who he was. They say he was shot at least once. Homicide detectives spent the morning canvassing the morning trying to gather as much evidence as they could. Several residents heard the gunshots but didnt call in to report it. Investigators say far they havent come up with any valuable leads but the resident who discovered the body, doesnt recognize the man. He recounted what happened. I was asleep in the living room. Reporter its unknown if the victim lives in the neighborhood or what he was doing there. Police say it appears hes latino in his late 20s, he was also wearing an ankle bracelet. The 85yearold has been in a coma for the past eight years after suffering a stroke. Israeli media reports hes suffering from kidney failure. Secretary of state john kerry arrived in israel today to try to push forward middle east peace talks entering a difficult phase.
