The blaze destroyed one unit but crews were able to contain it before it damaged others. But theres one big mystery fire investigators are still trying to solve. The Investigation Continues into an earlymorning fire at a san jose mobile home. It started shortly after 2 00 this morning near monterey road and firefighters still have not located the elderly man who lives in the unit. Ktvus katie utehs is live on the scene with the new information about this mobile park. Good morning, katie. Reporter good morning, tori. I just got off the phone with san jose fires Public Information officer. He says now that it is daylight, the plan to move forward, research this mobile home. As you can see, its completely gutted. Early this morning they got through 80 of the home. They still need to search through the kitchen. They hope that will give them more identification or contact info as they try to find the elderly man who lived here. They do not believe he was home at the time of the fire. Let me show you some video and some pictures of the flames and smoke coming from the mobile home at Casa Mobile Home Park along monterey in san jose. The smoke could be seen with 101 could be seen from 101. The mobile home where the fire started is completely destroyed, as youve seen. They walked through the gutted home and believe the elderly homeowner was not in the unit at the time. They are still trying to locate him. Neighbors are becoming increasingly concerned for their safety. This is the third one down the street from us this past year. I mean, this is just shocking to me. Reporter joey says there have been three fires that he can recall recently. A power box exploded. Another fire was electrical in nature and a palm tree caught fire from a cigarette butt. Now, another neighbor says he saw the homeowner yesterday when he helped jump his car. Investigators are still looking for him. Theyve not determined the cause of the fire. They do tell me they are likely to see an uptick in fires as it gets colder because people start to use fireplaces and space heaters to stay warm. Reporter homeless shelters are packed this week, especially in santa rosa where there are an estimated 1,000 Homeless People and steve said we could see snow in mt. The bay area hills may actually see snow this weekend. The National Weather service says Higher Elevations may get a dusting of snow saturday and sunday mornings. The same cold air could also dump a foot of snow in the sierra. If you are driving, expect icy roads. Freezing temperatures can pose a danger to plants. Citrus, you a avocados avocados are vulnerable. Plants should be taken indoors and covered with a special sheet or blanket. If its just a regular blanket or sheet, use stakes. Its also a good idea to water plants thoroughly because wet soil holds heat better. Church groups in the south bay will be handing out blankets to the homeless today. Overnight temperatures are dropping in the 30s. Starting at 5 30 this evening, the emergency blanket giveaway will take place in a parking lot across from Happy Hollow Park in san jose. A san jose investigation goes on into the death of a bicyclist killed after being hit by a car last night. It happened about 7 00 as the unidentified man rode his bike on vista park adrive and branham lane. The cyclist was rushed to the hospital but he died a short time later. The driver of the car stayed right there at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. This was san joses 25th fatality of the year involving a pedestrian or a psychingist. There is a new effort in menlo park to protect bike riders from being harassed by drivers. A proposed ordinance will give bike riders and other victims of road rage more access to resources in court. It would also protect other Vulnerable People out there on the road like children and disabled people. Menlo Park City Council could get this legislation by january. 7 09. Happening now, a House Committee is holding a hearing on problems with the rollout of the new healthcare law. These are live pictures from the hearing. The university of notre dame filed a religious challenge to the healthcare overhall, saying the overhaul, saying the requirement that the health plans cover Birth Control violates roman teachings. This is one of more than 80 lawsuits attacking the law on religious grounds. It will be the Supreme Court who decides if employers can refuse to offer benefits under the law. But that ruling is not expected into well next year. She just ran papers to file against javier campos, the man who won in 2010. The rematch will take place in the june primary for the district 5 council seat which is in san joses east side. The Illegal Campaign mailers were sent to members of the Vietnamese Community and were designed to make her look like a communist. The Napa City Council voted to repeal a controversial medical marijuana ordinance. Three years ago, the city voted to allow a medical Marijuana Dispensary to open in the city. It never happened because of conflicts with federal laws. Well, last night the city Council Voted in favor of the repeal saying the dispensary would have made it easier for teenagers to get marijuana. The. The Richmond City council took the First Step Towards banning Electronic Cigarettes in public places. Backed up for a 20, 25minute delay before you actually make it on the bridge. This mornings commute is okay on 880. Ive drawn some lines to show you where the slow traffic is, but its going to be a typical slow. San mateo bridge approach also is kind of slow. When you get over the to the peninsula, 101 at 92 crowded. 280 is a better bet for you. Getting word of a crash on highway 4 westbound to southbound 680, that one just came in moments ago. Westbound highway 4 on the ramp. A crash has been clearing. Traffic in the area on highway 4 is slow for almost the entire way between antioch and the concord area. Theres a couple of breaks. Not really a lot. Southbound 680 slows at 42. Back to the desk. Still no signs of a woman in milpitas last seen being taken away by a man at a bus stop. While police are not sure this is an abduction, they are treating this as a worstcase scenario. Ktvus janine de la vega is in milpitas where investigators have talked to witnesses and they are checking Surveillance Video. Reporter yes, dave. Police say they havent received any tips this morning that have helped them with this possible kidnapping case. Their best lead is the Surveillance Video that was captured by an a. C. Transit bus that of a struggle between a man and a woman that happened here. Police say the video from the bus is helpful for their investigation and they spent last night reviewing it to see if it can help them identify the man or the woman. Officers say the bus driver called 911 at around 6 00 last night after he saw an asian man approach an asian woman sitting at the bus stop on east calaveras boulevard across from city hall. He told investigators there was a physical struggle and that continued as the man took the woman into the bushes of a nearby business complex. Chp helicopter searched the area including the creek by using infrared technology. But nobody was found. Obviously anyone that witnessed the incident would be encouraged to call the Milpitas Police department. As of right now, the only person weve spoken to is the bus driver. There was one person on the bus who witnessed what had occurred. They were only able to provide a vague account of what happened due to their seating on the bus. Reporter police may release the video to the media to help their case. They are hoping if anyone saw anything, they will come forward. Officers are reaching out to Police Agencies to see if they have any new missing persons cases. Investigators say this appears to be an isolated incident but they are treating it as a serious matter. At this point, they just dont know if this woman was taken against her will. Janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. In about 30 minutes, the search resumes in idaho for missing san jose pilot dale smith and his family in the rugged idaho wilderness. On sunday, smith was piloting his plane. He was accompanied by by his two children and their spouses when the plane went missing over a rule part of central idaho. Smith reported having engine problems during a flight from oregon to montana. Smith is the cofounder of a data storage firm. His Business Partner says hes also a humanitarian. He uses that airline to transfer dentists and doctors down to mexico to help underprivileged people down there. Yesterday, searchers detected a signal but havent been able to pinpoint the exact location. A family in pleasanton is asking for hemp to find a help to find a 13yearold girl who walked out of her home early sunday morning. Police tell ktvu they are concerned because of her young age and she was last seen with three males. Investigators got a tip from a friend of ana elizarraras. According to the tip, the 8th grader may be in the san jose area. His father says his daughter left a note apologizing for causing trouble for her parents. Anna, its not your fault. Its nobodys fault. We just want you back at home. Anas family said she was bullied on social media and is currently enrolled in independent studies. Police say shes not made contact with any friends or family on social media which she normally uses on a regular basis. Shes 55, weighs about 130 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. Last seen getting into a four door coupe. That car is a newer model and dark brown. Anyone with information is asked to call pleasanton police. As city college faces its own issues with accreditation, enrollment numbers are also down. Brian flores is live in San Francisco to explain why students are shying away from enrolling. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Enrollment began a couple of weeks ago. What used to be a busy time is a time of uncertainty for students. Many are trying to decide whether to attend this college or look into other options. Fulltime enrollment has dropped 26 from this time last year which roughly equates to 2,000 less students. The university cite as few factors. First the paid state enrollment system, students would need to pay before enrolling. The second a printed schedule. The lack of a interpred schedule is a major factor in declining enrollment. But the third and the one weve been reporting on is the uncertainty of the colleges accreditation. The commission in charge of the colleges can voted last summer to terminate the colleges accreditation because it wasnt in compliance with standard. We spoke to a student who said some students are unsure what to do. A lot of people have been talking about enrolling next semester and continuing with their programs. But i did see a little animosity among some students in the art departments. They were a little bit afraid to pay up front and stay in school. Reporter meantime, the commission itself also facing some challenges. Its coming from a series of lawsuits and injunctions. The latest one coming late last month from the city and the Teachers Union asking to block the commissions decision. One filed in august by den necessary herrera. The lawsuit claims the decisions were bias and didnt control conflicts of interest. The hearing is scheduled for sometime later this month. The department of education also releasing a recent report basically stating the commission has not received educator confidence which is a requirement. The college is moving forward. Happening today, a man suspected of killing another man over a video game system in San Francisco is due no in court. The system, Ronnie Collins is accused of the Fatal Shooting of 22yearold ikenna on sunday in the bayview district. Ikenna posted an onlined a for a Playstation Online ad for a playstation. Also later today, the suspect in the l. A. X. Shooting rampage will also make his first court appearance. 23yearold paul ciancia will be at a San Bernardino county jail. Hes being held in federal custody, accused of walking into terminal 3 last month and killing a tsa officer and wounding three other people. It started about 2 00 a. M. Near monterey road. Katie utehs is live to tell us what firefighters are doing to try to locate that homeowner. Good morning, katie. Reporter good morning, dave. Within the last halfhour, crews arrived and installed this fence around the gutted mobile home. Firefighters have walked through the home a second time now in the Daylight Hours and tell me that theyve confirmed the elderly man was not home at the time of the fire. And they dont have any Contact Information for him. So at this point, its a waiting game to see if he comes home. They say he may be out of town. Theres not a lot they can do to try to locate him. Let me show you pictures of the fire that show how large the fire got before firefighters arrived. The unit is located at Casa Mobile Home Park along monterey road in san jose. People called 911 after seeing smoke and flames from 101. Once firefighters contained the fire, they determined that the 70yearold man was likely not home and, again, confirmed that this morning. Neighbors we spoke with say this is actually the fourth fire in recent months. Two were electrical in nature, the other a palm tree fire sparked by a cigarette. I turn off the lights at night and during the day when im gone. I just hopefully come home to a house thats fully intact. Reporter another neighbor tells me that he helped the elderly homeowner jumpstart his car yesterday which may be the last time the homeowner was seen. At this point, the investigators have not determined a cause of the fire. Firefighters say this time of year they do see an increase in fires as people use space heaters and their wood stoves to try to stay warm. A san jose Investigation Continues into the death last night of a cyclist killed after being hit by a car. It happened about 7 00 as the unidentified man rode his bike on vista park drive and branham lane. The man was rushed to the hospital but he died a short time later. The driver of the car did stay at the scene and is cooperating with police. This was san joses 25th fatality of the year involving a pedestrian or a cyclist. Theres a new move in menlo park to protect bike riders were being harassed by drivers. A proposed ordinance will give bike riders and other victims of road rage more access to resources in court. It would also protect other Vulnerable People out there on the road like children and disabled people. The menlo Park City Council could get this proposal by january. 8 08. Weve got an update to the story weve been telling you about since the 10 00 news last night. A new witness has come forward in the case of a possible kidnapping in milpitas at a bus stop. Janine de la vega is live in milpitas. You just talked to the witness 45 minutes ago, janine. Reporter yes. That woman works in the dental offices here. She just got finished talking to police. They were interviewing her. She said she heard a lady screaming and witnessed part of the struggle which occurred near a bus stop here on east calaveras boulevard. That Police Officer who just interviewed her is now Walking Around the complex looking for more Surveillance Video. Police spent last night reviewing Surveillance Video from an a. C. Transit bus that captured the struggle between a man and a woman that took place at 6 00 last night. They are trying to use it to help them identify the man or the woman. A bus driver called 911 after witnessing an asian man approach an asian woman sitting at the bus stop thats across from city. He told investigators the man started to physically struggle with her and took her into the bushes at a nearby complex. A chp helicopter searched the area and creek using infrared technology. Nobody was found. Police are interviewing the woman now. I heard a scream and saw a man pushing a woman. It looked like he was grabbing her and she was struggling. At that time i thought maybe it was a girlfriend and boyfriend fighting. I didnt know. Reporter you saw the bus driver watching . I saw the bus driver and a few people watching and they are on their phone. Reporter that witness says about ten minutes later, she saw an asian couple walking toward the bus stop coming from the direction of the bushes. Shes unsure if it was the same man or woman involved in the struggle since she didnt get a good look hat their faces at their faces. Police are interviewing her to find out if thats the same couple. Officers leb reaching out to other Police Agencies to see if they have any new missing person cases. At this point, investigators say it appears to be an isolated incident. A san jose investigation goes on into the death last night of a bicyclist killed after being hit by a car. This happened on vista park drive and branham lane. A lack of printed schedules has led to enrollment dropping but i also spoke to a College Teacher who helped out with the scheduling and say theres more classes being offered in students check online. The other factor, a crede dation issue. A faculty voted on this because it didnt meet the standards. The college says they are accredited. Many lowerincome and des enfrance chised people wouldnt have an education if it des enfranchised people disenfranchised people wouldnt have an education if it werent for this college. Im a felon.
