A car crash and fire caused a big problem at californias biggest katy, which opened just casino which opened just last week. The graton resort was among thousands of homes in businesses in the dark after a blackout late last night. Ktvus Claudine Wong joins us live from rohnert park with reaction from gamblers. But you can see the power is back on there and things are running normally. But people left here overnight, not sure if they would get their money back from what was lost in the power outage. Instead of happy gam berrings inside gamblers inside, we found unhappy and confused people outside, people like monica lynch who described for us what it was like when the power went off just before 11 00. An unidentified 26yearold man was found shot in the parking lot of the motel 6 on fairgrounds drive about 6 45 last night. He died later at a hospital. Now, there have been numerous local relief efforts for those in the philippines affected. Students from San Jose State University are collecting nonperishable food, toiletries, baby supplies and medical kits in front of the event center today and tomorrow from 11 00 a. M. To 4 00 p. M. Nearly half of the population lives in california. A cal state east bay student says her father was visiting relatives in the philippines when the typhoon hit and flooded their house. He and family members survived by hanging onto furniture for hours. A grandmother lost her grip and drowned. I dont know how he is over there, if hes getting food, water, clothes. Just worried and i mean, im relieved that hes alive. But im worried about his situation over there. Reporter palo alto has a sister city in the philippines, palo, the city around 63,000 was hit hard by the storm. The palo alto daily news is reporting that last night, the city council devidded to donate decided to donate 10,000. More donations are welcomed at the vigil being held in downtown san jose. San franciscos bill for last summers huge fire in the yosemite area now stands at more than 36 million. The rim fire was the Third Largest wildfire in california history. It burned through hutch of the hetch hetchy system which carries fresh Drinking Water and hydraulic energy from Yosemite National park to San Francisco. The fire also threatened the camp which is owned by the city of San Francisco. A watery cleanup continues at the Alameda County courthouse. Part of the building was flooded twice. The sixth floor was soaked by a leak on saturday and water poured all the way down to the second floor of the Police Administration building. And two days later, there was a second leak. Repairs and cleanup may take a week and a half to complete. New this morning, smoke in the cockpit forced a Delta Airlines flight to make an Emergency Landing in new york. Delta spokesperson tells ktvu a pilot on flight 2921 from j. F. K. To minneapolis reported smoke about 5 30 our time. The pilot turned the plane around, went back to j. F. K. And landed ten minutes later. There were about 70 passengers on board. All of them got off the plane at a taxi area away from the gate. No one was hurt. The investigation continues. In the meantime, another flight had to divert and make an unscheduled stop last night. The cockpit windshield cracked midflight. Theres a picture of that windshield taken from inside the cockpit. It was an american Airlines Flight 160 from miami to boston. The plane only got as far as orlando. The pilots landed their safely after the doublepaned windshield cracked right in front of them. None of the 156 passengers and crew on board were hurt. The plane was taken out of fs out of service for repairs. The passengers got on another plane. It landed in boston early this morning. Firefighters say heat lamps used for the marijuana grow parked the sparked the fire. New this morning, reports of radioactive chards still being found on Treasure Island despite years of cleanup. Ktvus brian flores live on Treasure Island right now with more on the worried residents. We are on the western side of Treasure Island and to my right is an area that is currently under construction but it is blocked off to authorize personnel only because of radiation concerns. This isnt anything knew to t. I. Residents but what is a memo that states that there may will be radioactive pieces orchards on the island or chards on the island. Thats a concern for kids who play around here. This is a picture of a chard. In that memo, again, obtained by. Center for investigative reporting. It was found last march. According to the memo, it was so hot that holding onto it for an hour, could have caused severe radiation burns and hair loss. In terms of dealing with radiation, this is not new to Treasure Island residents. They say they were notified local officials perhaps during the time when the island used to be a naval island. Regarding this new chard, theres concerns from residents. The concern, lets get it done immediately. Dont put it on the back burner. Know theres humans that are living around all of this and get it cleaned up. Put attention around this immediately. Reporter the longterm goal is that the land will be urn turned over will be turned over to the city and the plans are to redevelop this area with pray grounds, reck rye playgrounds, Recreation Area but the concern from the residents, those need to be addressed before that can happen. Happening today a San Francisco sheriffs deputy charged with bank robbery is scheduled to appear in court today. 37yearold phil tong is accused of robbing a bank of america near ocean beach last november. Prosecutors say he made off with 1700 in cash. A separate weapons charge could be consolidated during the preliminary hearing. Tong was suspended after the arrest. A san Francisco Police officer is filing a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city. Lorenzo adamson said he was racially profiled, choked and arrested by several colleagues who did not recognize him during a traffic stop. He was pulled over on the Bayview District on may 30th for not having a license plate. He said the first question he was asked if he was on probation or parole. The city has not responded to the lawsuit. Four College Students in south San Francisco, they are desperate to find a new place to live. This after they rented a hughes they found on craigslist from a woman who didnt even own it. Here is heres the house here is the house listed for rent. The College Students paid the woman 1800 in rent. One day they came home, the locks were changed. They found out the woman bhe rented it they rented it from is not the landlord. Police say theres only a slim chance they will ever catch the woman posing as the landlord. Only 39 of americans they say they approve of the job the president is doing in the latest poll. 54 say they disapprove and its the first time the president s approval approval rates has dipped rating has dipped below 50 . And the Approval Rating of congress has dropped more than the president s. A new gallup poll shows only 9 of americans approve of the job congress is doing. Thats the lowest Approval Rating in the 39 years gallup has conducted the survey. The peninsulas major transit agencies are looking for a funding solution. Caltrain and samtrans have benefited from the improving economy. In fact, caltrains ridership has been at an alltime high with average weekday boardings around 55,000 people. But not all funds come from fares. A lot comes from grants. Samtrans has not been as fortunate in the ridership department. So its been tweaking routes and Service Times to save money. The boarding up of homes accelerated started about a year or two ago because caltrans was not renting them out and started to board them out instead of renting them. Perfectly good houses. Topping our news at 8 00, a fiery car crash that caused a big power problem in californias biggest casino which opened just last week. The graton resort and casino was among thousands of homes and businesses in rohnert park in the dark late last night. Claudine wong has been on the scene for the past few hours and everything up and running now, claudine . Reporter it is, tori. If you take a look at the parking lot. Weve been watching it fill up. Its business as usual this morning. But it was a much different story overnight. Overnight, the bright lights of the Graton Casino and resort were replaced with this darkness and confusion. Now candles are going to be lit here in front of that the Martin Luther king library. Thats because a local Filipino Group has organized a vigil to be held tonight. Now, nearly half of the filipino population in california lives in the bay area. The struggle of the victims has prompted many people to participate in local relief efforts. The san jose Filipino Club as well as fraternities and sororities are collecting food, baby supplies, medical kits today and tomorrow from 11 00 a. M. To 4 00 p. M. Some who donate say even though though dont nobody in the philippines, they wanted to help out. Were very blessed people. A lot of unfortunate things happen in the world. Ive been im able to give back. Reporter palo alto has a sister city in the philippines, palo, the city of around 63,000 was hit hard by the storm. The palo alto daily news is reporting that last night, the city council decided to donate 10,000 to the philippines to help with the relief effort. Theres a warning out for female students at uc santa cruz. Police say there have been reports that womens drinks at recent parties may have been spiked with unknown drugs. Police say to avoid this happening to you, dont leave your drinks unattended. Never accept an open drink from a stranger and avoid going to parties by yourself. A mother in el sobrante has a warning for other parents after a stranger walked into her Daughters School and apparently tried to pick her up. The girl attends El Sobrante Christian school on argyle road. Its a small, private, Elementary School. The plins pal admit principal admits mistakes were made when the man walked in, gave the girls first name and received a visitors pass. The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office has increased patrols and richmond schools were told to look out for the man. Bad news for commuters on highway 101. The worst traffic spot on that road wont be fixed for seven more years. A new report shows it will take that long to get the money to build carpool lanes on the section from north of novato to petaluma. Construction crews are improving all of the interchanges in petaluma among other changes in the area. Now, the project to widen 40 miles of highway 101 between marin and sonoma counties, it actually started 13 years ago. Now to a channel 2 investigation. Bay area transit leaders are gonna meet today about a new problem at the bay bridge. Fastrack users in the far right lanes, youve probably seen the lane dividers. They were added when the new bridge opened to improve the flow of traffic at the tacoma but drivers keep running over the pylons and thats become a maintenance problem and a possible traffic hazard. It will be to honern the two officers killed in the line of duty earlier this year. Heres a sketch of the design intended to honor detective Sergeant Loren butch baker and detective Elizabeth Baker but butler. It will replace this memorial filled with flowers and candles after the officers were killed february 26th. Officers baker and busler were preparing to question the Sexual Assault suspect at his home when the suspect shot and killed them. A short time later, the gunman was killed by other officers. The Memorial Garden is scheduled to be dedicated on the First Anniversary of the officers deaths. Some doctors are divided, split over new guidelines recommending new wider use of cholesterollowering statin drugs. Yesterday, a group of cardiologists and the American Heart Association announced that physicians should prescribe Statin Therapy to more patients. Even if they are still relatively healthy to reduce the odds of a heart attack or stroke. But there are critics who say these are not magic pills and that side effects have not been reported enough. It is 8 25. A new state law aimed at getting more children vaccinated could actually drive down numbers. The law goes into effect in january. When it was found, according to the memo, it was so hot, holding onto it for an hour could cause radiation burns and hair loss. Theres concern more could be found.
