A Santa Clara High School math teacher is accused of having sex with a minor. Police arrested him shortly after officers interviewed him at police headquarters. He was booked into santa clara jail on multiple counts of unlawful sex with a minor. Hes been placed on a leave of absence with the school. Santa Clara High School has sent out a warning letter to the parents. We have information on a teacher arrested on abuse charges earlier this year. Joseph martin worked at woodside elementary in concord since 1991. He now faces a possible life prison sentence if convicted of abusing more than a dozen former students. The Contra Costa Times has uncovered an internal School District report from 2006 warning that martin was a possible abuse threat to his students. Administrators failed to notify police and allowed him to continue teaching before his arrest in april. 7 05. Oracle ceos Larry Ellisons passion for sailing is apparently causing controversy at this weeks open World Convention in San Francisco. Some people attending the conference are upset. Part of the reason they traveled thousands of dollars in registration and travel costs because they wanted to hear oracle ceo give the major address at the conference yesterday. But Larry Ellison was not there. He attended the americas cup race. About 60,000 people are attending the convention which ends tomorrow. The Associated Press is reporting they are investigating whether the airline failed to meet obligations to help the families of the 290 passengers. Governor brown will be in oakland today to sign legislation increasing the states minimum wage. It will increase from 8 to 9 an hour on july 1st of next year. Then on january 1st, 2016, the minimum wage will increase again to 10 an hour. The governor will appear at a signing ceremony at noon todd at the cypress Training Center on poplar street in oakland. California is expanding the definition of family when it comes to the leave act. Qualified individuals will be able to take six weeks off to care for sick family members and be given 55 of their pay from the state disability fund. Right now, the law allows time off to care for a child, spouse, domestic partner or parent. The new definition does not take effect until next july. Southern california firefighters making progress against two wildfires. Fire retardant was poured on the fire north of azusa in los angeles county. At this point, its 70 contained. The wildfire started monday. It briefly threatened homes before ground crews and planes knocked down the flames. The sierra fire in the cajon pass started yesterday afternoon and quickly spread to 200 acres near a major freeway. Manned dorie evacuations were ordered for a few dozen mobile homes in the afternoon. But by midnight, only voluntary evacuations were happening. The Forest Service hopes to contain that fire by friday night. Pleasant hill police are investigating a robbery ended with the victim being dragged across the parking lot by the suspects car. Take a look at this new video. Its of an island reportedly created by the force of the earthquake off pakistans southern coast. People have been gathering along the coast to see it. Its about 30 feet high and 109 yards long. The head of the Geological Survey of pakistan confirms the land mass was created by the earthquake and it says scientists are now trying to determine exactly how it happened. And mexican authorities said the death toll from last weeks floods and mudslides has risen to 130. Eight more bodies were found buried in the landslide along the countrys pacific coast. Soldiers and emergency workers are still looking for more bodies in the mudslide in the village. 68 people are believed to have died there but few of their bodies have been recovered. Emergency crews in colorado have found the last known missing person in the Flood Disaster zone. That list at one point included hundreds of people. Eight people are confirmed dead in the disastrous flooding in Boulder County and several other areas. Police investigate the killing of a 20yearold at a San Francisco muni stop. An important clue for moments just before the deadly shooting. We have new details about the problems of of aldon smith. What we now know about violence in his home long before the dui arrest. New details about aldon smith. Prosecutors are releasing information about violence at his south bay home last year during a party. Investigators say someone pointed a gun at a bartender, smith then tried to break up the party, which was thrown by a friend. Happening today an elderly San Francisco couple is being evicted from their home. They say they are victims of a state law favoring landlords. Well, the Sheriffs Department was supposed to come and kick the leaves out of their apartment at 6 00 later this morning. Officials say its only a matter of time. The leaves are paying 778 a month to live here, sort of near russian hill. One bedrooms go for well over that. They live here with their 48 yearold disabled daughter. Theyve lived here for 34 years. Raised seven children here. Theyve tried to find another place to live but cant. Mathew miller bought the property last year. Many say his plans are to renovate them into luxury tenancy and common units. He offered buyouts to residents here but the leaves refused to budge. This is one of an eviction. A landlord can according to the tenants unit can do that. The board voted for a tiny moratorium on the condo conversion program. Tenants of the Advocacy Program hope it works. The court did side with the landlord. The leaves are supposed to leave. David chu said he would introduce legislation to find priority housing. Some people were here to protest the eviction. A very emotional candlelight vigil vigil candlelight vigil started hours later. I lost my best friend to a fool who made one bad decision. Theres no amount of justice or punishment that can be given to him to be given back to us what we all lost. The driver was 19yearold ryan hoover. He faces felony drunk driving charges. Middle School Students in Discovery Bay have found a new wray to honor the 12 new way to honor the 12yearold boy killed. They are wearing ties in honor of the little boy who often wore ties and suits when he went to class. He was hit and killed by a mother who had just dropped her own children off at school. 7 36. San Francisco Police have released Surveillance Video of a suspect wanted in the deadly shooting of a 20yearold man at a muni light rail stop. This video shows the suspect on a muni train monday night moments before the deadly shooting. Hes described as asian between 20 and 30 years old. Police say the shooting happened just after the victim got off the train at randolph and blight streets. Investigators still dont know what prompted the attack. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police. Strong winds and low humidity have triggered a fire weather watch for the north and east bay hills. It goes into effect tonight at 11 00 and lasts through friday afternoon. That warning comes after a fire at a home on max wellton road in piedmont destroyed one home and damaged two others. Firefighters remained on the scene to make sure the fire was completely out. The winds not favorable to us coming up canyon, upslope pushing the fire into the expoesh sure buildings. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters say it reminded them of the Oakland Hills fire in october of 1991. They say fires in the hills are very difficult to fight. 7 37. In oakland, pg e crews worked all night to get the power back on after a car hit a power pole. Heres some of the video from after the crash. This happened about 9 00 last night near 20th avenue and gleeson way. The car hit a power pole and the car overturned. Were told the driver of the honda was taken to a nearby hospital. Still no word on what caused the crash. At least one home lost power as a result of that accident. San Francisco State university is training its Police Officers to use tasers. This is the decision to a lou this decision comes after an incident in may where officers arrested suspected squatters from a campus dorm. That led to accusations of police brutality. University Officials Say tasers are compliance weapons. They can stop situations from getting out of hand. They also need to set rules for using them before giving them to all 28 officers. Oakland Police Arrested two people on suspicion of robbing a group of casual carpoolers in the rockridge neighborhood. Police say one of the men pulled out a gun and forced the carpoolers to hand over all of their valuables on monday morning. Based on witnesses descriptions, police were able to track down the getaway car and arrested a 17yearold boy and a 22yearold man. They are trying to figure out if the two suspects are connected to other crimes in the area. According to the fbis annual crime report, oakland has more rob robbies than any other large u. S. City. It has 10. 9 robberies per 1,000 residents. Thats more than double of any other large california city. San francisco has 4. 2 robbery per 1,000 residents. San bernardino and richmond both have 3. 7. 7 39. Right now, theres another mound of mosquito fogging going on in parts of contra costa county. Its happening in the southeast corner of the Holland Tract near brentwood. The fogging is targeting mosquitoes that may be carrying the west nile virus. Livermore is changing its rules about selling homemade foods. But there will be some strict limitations. Only foods that arent likely to go bad are allowed. Only three customers at a time may be inside the home. No sales are allowed outside of the home. Business hours have to be between the hours of 8 00 a. M. And 6 00 p. M. The city wants to encourage bakers, cooks and candymakers to try to begin their own businesses. A doctor from bakersfield is being hailed a hero after pulling off a dramatic life saving maneuver. Dr. Johnson was attending a dinner in bakersfield this week and thats when he noticed that Pauline Larwood choking on a piece of meat. Dr. Johnson tried to perform the heimlich maneuver. When that didnt work, he used a pocketknife to cut an incision in larwoods throat and then used a pen to help her breathe. The procedure worked and larwood is said to be doing fine. A Police Department on the peninsula will soon update the technology that powers the Emergency Response system. Its a story you will see only on 2, the menlo park Police Department, just purchased a next generation 911 system. It costs 360,000 and was paid for through phone taxes. The system will be installed over the next few months. People will be able to text, and send videos through 911. The more information we did get into then in center to that call taker, to the dispatch center, the better the response. There are concerns the transmission of this Digital Information could overload the system. Right now, experts are testing and retesting the system to see how much it can handle. Agencies are required to upgrade their systems every seven years paying with them with taxes. The system costs 360,000. This is about 11 00 in the morning. The manager of the store, you can see at the top of the screen talking to that man and all of a sudden, there it happens. Its still unclear what led to the punch. Hes trying to take care of his store. Its a business. Heres some other important details. Investigators say the man, as you can see there, does not have a shopping cart, and he was walking back and forth right before this all of this happened. What they would like to know is what was said before the punch was thrown. Whatever they were saying didnt really look like the manager was thinking it was something that was leading into like a physical confrontation and then all of a sudden, a strike out of nowhere. Okay. Take one more look at the video. Were able to give you a closer look at the mans face as they continue to search for him. The victim is in his 50s. Hes still in the hospital in serious condition at last word. One coworker said he was awake and alert. Police are hoping to talk to them, hope he can provide more answers about what happened and why the suspect could face felony battery charges. Dave . All right. Thank you. Police in pleasanton investigating and they are focusing on a group of teenagers. Is in connection with the brutal beating saturday morning of a man right in front of his house. At this point, the teenagers are only being called persons of interest. Police have not released their names. But they are only saying the teens are students from the pleasanton and another nearby School District. 51yearold david lamont is still in a coma after that attack saturday morning. Police say he was beaten after he tried to confront a group of teenagers who were making a lot of noise. 7 48. New information on how terrorists linked to al qaeda carried out the attack on that Shopping Mall in kenya. The alshabaab terror group based in somalia reportedly studied blueprints of the Shopping Mall. Then they rehearsed the attack and there are reports they used employees to help stash machine guns in one of the malls stores. The president of kenya has called for three days of National Mourning for the victims beginning today. Governor brown has signed a bill into law that will create a statewide earthquake warning system. The system would give california residents up to a 60 second warning before a potentially damaging earthquake hit. Happening right now a protest in San Francisco supporting longtime San Francisco residents being evicted from their apartment because of what some call a loophole in tenancy laws. Ktvus Tara Moriarty is there. This family is fighting being evicted . Reporter well, the Sheriffs Department was supposed to kick them out at 6 00 this morning. That has not happened yet. And now tenancy groups are here to support the couple saying to support the leaves saying this is not fair. They are paying 778 a month to live here. One bedrooms around here go well over double that. The couple lives off jackson with their 47yearold disabled daughter. They say theyve tried to find another place to live but cant. [drums] tenancy advocacy groups say whats happening to the leaves is immoral. Mathew miller bought the property. Many say the plans are to renovate and sell them. He offered buyout to the long time agents but the leaves refused to budge. This is one of a rising number of evictions regarding a law that allows the landlord to evict tenants in order to get out of the Residential Housing market. Its breaking all of our hearts. We feel like we have to draw the line somewhere. We need to as a city, we need to come together and do something about it when these kinds of families are being put out in the street. One of them grabbed her purse and grabbed the suspects car, instead they drove off dragging her for a short distance before she finally let go. The suspects car described as a tan or brown, 1990 ford taurus with yellow penya motors dealership plates. Firefighters say they are making progress this morning against two wildfires in southern california. A plane dumped fire retardant yesterday on the socalled madre fire. It burned 450 acres north of azusa in los angeles county. It is 70 contained this morning. The wildfire began monday and briefly threatened some homes before ground crews an aircraft knocked down the flames. And new information came to us about the fire in San Bernardino county. The principal says this particular teacher was very popular and wellliked among students. So this is going to be a blow. 32yearold hugo Cortez Guzman was arrested late yesterday on multiple counts of unlawful sex with a minor. Santa clara police say they received a tip yesterday morning that Cortez Guzman may have had sexual relations with a juvenile. Investigators met with him at the Police Department and after that interview, officers arrested him. Cortez guzman is a math teacher and works with the schools avid program. Hes been placed on administrative leave at the high school. The superintendent spoke to us about this incident a short time ago. Were gonna cooperate with the police and do whatever we can to make sure that our kids continue to be safe. Thats our responsibility and thats what we will continue to do. Reporter parents were alerted about the arrest yesterday. Grief counselors are on campus to help students having trouble coping with the news.
