Southbound 880 they are clearing a crash in fremont and the traffic is very, very slow as you drive out of san leandro and into fremont and into hayward and fremont. Speeds are down to 5 miles an hour. Southbound andrade they are clearing a crash there. Its still slow out of pleasanton. A big problem in the caldecott tunnel. It looks like they might be reopening the tunnel. But the traffic is still backed up. If you if the guys in the control room can pull up just kind of on the fly, pull up the 24 camera, we can show viewers whats going on. There it is. Look at the traffic here. Its backed up out of la fayette. Its stopped. Now, i just heard that someone at the desk here say they are opening it. So i have to confirm that. But a little too late. Take b. A. R. T. Lets go to some more pictures. Northbound 280 is okay. Down the road, northbound 101 at 280 there is a crash. At 7 04. This is the toll plaza. Thats about a 20minute delay. Back to the desk. All right. Thank you, sal. At least one person was injured in a shooting this morning at a building at the Washington Navy yard. This is according to the u. S. Navy, as authorities search for an active shooter. The navy said three shots were fired. About 3,000 people work in the building. People inside the building have been directed to shelter in place. Justin gray is live often the scene to tell us whats going on. Justin . Reporter such an active scene. They tell us they have the active shooter barricaded in the building. Theyve moved us back and theyve moved the public back blocks and blocks. D. C. Police shutting down the area. They say the shooting happened about 8 00, 9 00. It began on east coast time. They tell us the shooter and the navy Sea Operations center, a building where 3,000 people work. This is at the nay i have yards here in d. C. Where a lot of the navy yards here in d. C. Where a lot of the commands are located. One confirmed injury. It looks like several more, though. But such an active situation, a lot of that information is changing as we speak. They continue to bring in ambulances, bring in s. W. A. T. Teams. We see Different Police moving in every few seconds here. Again, its a coordinated effort. We have police, we have navy, we have capitol police. Other federal agencies all involved trying to get this shooter under control safely and as quickly as possible. Again, multiple shootings. All right. Obviously this is an active story we will continue to follow. New this morning, a police chase through two cities ended with a suspect crashing into an oakland liquor store. Its not the first time the store has been hit with a car. Tara moriarty is at the scene of the crash with more on what led up to this crash and also a look at the damage. Good morning, tara. Reporter yeah, the damage is pretty extensive. If you take a look, you can see its boarded up. This is where the car crashed. The window taken out here, a lot of the brick missing. I wanted to show you where the car slammed into a traffic pole, where this cone is. It affected all of the electricity, all of the signal lights here werent working for about seven hours. They were finally restored about an hour ago, the electricity. This all unfolded at 11 00 last night, the car, a mangled mess after the suspect slammed into the store on the cornern of 98th avenue. Police pulled the suspect over at 108th and san leandro. As soon as officers got out of their patrol car, the suspect sped off. Ten blocks away, the driver smashed into a car with a woman inside then knocked the traffic pole and crashed into the liquor store. Onlookers wonder why the man would try to evade place on such a simple traffic stop. Theres intrusion into the building. Theres a light standard thats been damaged and is now leaning up against. Building. Reporter police say that the man does have a criminal history. So they are looking into that as one of the reasons why he possibly didnt stop. San Leandro Police arrested the man and Oakland Police are handling the crash. The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. One of the things that is crazy, this isnt the first time Something Like this has happened to the liquor store. If you take a look, you can see all of these barriers set up. It looks like a car had actually hit right next to where the spot was in the path. So obviously, the owners know this is an issue. Live from oakland, im Tara Moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. Thank you, tara. 7 08. A pedestrian in San Francisco has been taken to the hospital after being hit by a taxicab. This happened about ten minutes before midnight in north beach, where broadway meets montgomery. Police say the pedestrian had to be transported to sf general. So far no word on the condition of the victim. 7 08. Its the first day back at school for deer valley after a crash mate was killed. Grief counselors will be at the school today. 17yearold lidle benjamin died friday night after the car he was in smashed into a tree and sterling and hillcrest avenue in antioch. Police say speed was a factor. The driver of the car is expected to survive his injuries. The driver of a second car involved in the crash is cooperating with police. In just a couple of hours from now, the 10yearold antioch boy who survived a near natal fatal pit bull attack will meet his rescuers. Around 11 45 this morning, hunter will meet the firefighters who were the first to arrive after the dog attack. On august 11th, he was knocked down by one pit bull dog and mauled by another at a neighbors home. The dogs owners are still fighting to get the dogs back. A public hear something scheduled for september 26th hearing is scheduled for september 26th. Police are investigating what could be a suspicious death. Police say a body was found in an rv off north 4th street and east julian. Ktvus janine de la vega is live in san jose and tells us a crime scene technician is on the way. Good morning, janine. Reporter good morning, tori. Yes, that crime scene technician just arrived. Theyve called another one in to help him. There is also the coroner thats here. They were called because theres some sort of physical evidence that was found inside that rv that you see right there that leads officers to believe its suspicious. Its still unknown if its a homicide yet. But at 3 40 police say they received a call from a homeless person who say they found a body inside the rv. That person said a key was on the outside of the rv and that allowed them to actually go inside and thats how they found the body. Initially, officers thought that the man died of Natural Causes because hes elderly. They located an i. D. That tells them hes 80 years old. After investigating more, they said, again, they found evidence that leads them to believe that this is suspicious. So a homicide lieutenant has been alerted. Detectives have not been called. But again, crime scene investigators are here to collect evidence just as a precaution. The coroner again is here examining the body. They are also going to collect it and an autopsy will be done later on to determine a cause of death. So again, a lot of unknowns still here. Police do not have the road blocked off here at 4th and julian. But there are patrol units here watching over as investigators collect their evidence for this investigation. Well update you. A running show with a severed foot inside is being investigated by San Francisco police. The San Francisco chronicle says it was found yesterday morning on ocean beach near taravel street. The medical Examiners Office says the foot and shoe appear to have been in the ocean for some time. The shoe is a green and black mesh puma running show, size 11 1 2. A draft report on the terrorist attack on the u. S. Consulate in libya is raising questions about the state Department Investigation. That report prepared by the republican majority staff on the Oversight Committee is alleging the state Department Investigation played down the substandard security at the consulate. Looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, thats backed up for a 25 to 30minute delay with no major problems getting into the city. Also, i want to mention that traffic on the nimitz freeway southbound out of hayward is slow because of earlier problems heading south. The traffic is very, very slow. Lets go to steve. We have some breaks in the clouds. It documents like its looks like its slightly cooler. It will be high at 75. A couple of systems, one near the end of the week will be moving in. Happening now the Costa Concordia off the coast of italy where crews have been rotating the wreckage, engineers say the cruise ship is no longer attached to the reef below. No bodies have been found. The ship is now 62 degrees from being fully upright. Salvage crews say once it is level, the ship can be towed away. It crashed into a reef in january of 2012, a year and a half ago, the wreck killed 32 people. It will be towed away and then broken up for scraps. And we have some breaking news right now. According to a defense official, several people have been killed and as many as ten wounded in thiss shooting at a in this mornings shooting at a u. S. Navy yard. We understand the shooter has been contained but not in custody. Theres bun report that says the one report that says the shooter has multiple guns. President obama is getting frequent briefings on the shooting. This is happening at the Washington Navy yard. This is at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, where 3,000 people work. And the white house says the president has directed his team to stay in touch with the navy, the fbi and a local official. And we understand also that flights have been halted at Reagan National airport due to the shooting, again, because the navy the gunman is apparently has been contained but is not in custody and also there are reports multiple guns. That problem alex, in the caldecott tunnel was so serious. Whats going on . Reporter we came from the oakland side of things to the east side of the caldecott tunnel which is where we are right now. The backup exends into the la fayette area. This tunnel, the middle bore reopened around 7 00. Right as we got here, we watched as the traffic started to flow in the tunnel. This was a nightmare. Its causing a major backup on westbound 24. We understand stood it extended all the way back into la fayette for much of the morning. The middle bore was not able to open up. The normally at this time of morning during the commute, youd had both tunnels opened in the westbound direction. All of the traffic squeezing through that one tunnel. Carns says what the issue was caltrans says what the issue was, a power outage that happened overnight. Thats whats to blame. They were not able to change the lane configuration so they could get cars flowing in the middle bore. They did get the problem figured out. Some type of power outage. I have a call in trying to figure out what caused the outage and issue. The good news, both bores, westbound, heading through the caldecott tunnel back open. Traffic still slow but its improving. Where shots were fired just over two hours ago at the Washington Navy yard. A defense official says three people were killed up to ten injured. Eight civilians and two police officers. The Washington Post reports there are three shooters, one is down, two on the loose. Theres enhanced security at the capitol. Now, we have a bit of a delay here. But justin gray is live on the shooting to let us know whats happening here now. Justin . Reporter naval Officials Say they have a shooter cornered but not captured. The Navy Confirms at least ten injuries and they are confirming at this hour, there are fatalities. They have pushed us back many blocks. The public being kept away as far away as possible. S. W. A. T. Teams, helicopters. This is a coordinated effort and also the d. C. Police are trying to get this shooter it looks like according to some reports, multiple shooters in custody. Theyve brought in s. W. A. T. Teams. Theyve been using Police Helicopters to bring crews there into the building. This is the [signal lost ] it looks like weve lost our signal. There will be grief counselors at Deer Valley High School after a deadly weekend crash that killed a student. Ktvus brian flores is at the school now where classes are due to begin in about ten minutes. Reporter about an hour ago, dave, were at the scene of a vigil several students and family members left messages. Students arriving here at deer valley hell. Gonna be a difficult day at this high school in antioch. When they come here, the students they will be meet with grief counselors as many try to cope with the loss of one of their students and class mates. 17yearold lidle benjamin. He was a passenger in a jaguar when it crashed into a tree off Sterling Hill drive and hillcrest last friday. The unidentified driver of that car is reportedly a John Muir Medical Center with serious injuries but hes expected to survive. 19 years old. Now, the investigation into what happened continues but they do say that speed played a role in the crash. We understand another car was involved and that driver has also come forward to Antioch Police and is cooperating. The whole Deer Valley High School community continues to mourn. On saturday, family, friends, classmates held a candlelight vigil. Family says he attended church regularly and was wellliked. You will recall that back in february, we reported on another crash not too far from here also on hillcrest avenue. That involved antioch teen, white. She was a student at Black Diamond middle school. In that case, police say the speed, alcohol did not play a role. When we talked to residents, they said cars tend to speed along that area as well. Grief counselors will be here to meet with students. Obviously a very tough day for many of the students who knew lidle. Coming up on mornings on 2, you will hear from one of the students as well as we hope to talk to administrators for the plans today for what is expected to be a very difficult day and week ahead. Brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. The 10yearold boy from antioch badly attack attacked by two pit bull dogs will meet his rescuers. This is hunter recovering at home. At 11 45, he will meet the firefighters who rushed to the scene of that dog attack. On august 11th, hunter was playing at a neighbors house when knocked down by one pit bull dog and mauled by another. The owner of the dogs, still fighting to get the dogs back. A public hearing is scheduled for september 26th. New this morning. In oakland, a man is in serious condition after being shot at least once. Police say he was found last night before 9 30 p. M. On grosvenor place. The shot spotter detected fire at fifth and international boulevard around the same time. Police say the two incidents may be related. More people in oakland are hiring private security guards to patrol their neighborhoods instead of relying on police. Private Security Companies say business has gone up as the number of shootings, burglaries and home invasions have increased. We talked to one woman this morning who said private security guards started patrolling her neighborhood this summer. I dont think this is a good trend. I dont feel good about the trend. I think everybody is hoping a temporary situation. Some neighborhoods have been  cooling their money together each month to split the cost. One company told the chronicle their guards will patrol an estimated 500 homes across oakland by november. 7 41. Happening today, in about an hour from right now, the economy will be the focus at the white house. As pam cook reports from our newsroom, today could set the stage for a battle in congress. First responders and a group of National Guardsmen were trapped overnight while on a rescue mission. It certainly shows that there is a challenge here just getting to those unaccountable. Rescue crews in colorado hope today they will be able to reach the hundreds left stranded by relentless rain and flash flooding. Officials blame at least sick deaths on the weather six deaths on the weather. Colorados National Guard has evacuated 2300 people. This is one thats really close to home. Were able to help our neighbors in the time of need. A lot of times these are literally our neighbors. Reporter among those rescued, a group stuns a group of students stranded near jamestown on a field trip. Something just grabbed it out of the sky like a waterfall and put it there. Were gonna come back and rebuild better than it was before. Reporter Emergency Management Officials Say the floods have destroyed at least 1500 homes and damaged thousands of others. While the situation is grim, its not hopeless. How would key recover from this. I know exactly inch by inch, mile pie mile mile by mile, community by community, they are taking this stuff back. A bridge in Washington State is now open again after part of it collapsed four months ago when it was hit pie an oversized by an oversized truck. The bridge is the main corridor connecting seattle and vancouver, canada. About 70,000 vehicles cross it each day. Back in may, a truck that was too tall hit cross beams causing it to collapse. No one was killed. There are safety concerns for thousands of bridges across the country and some of those bridges are right here in the bay area. An Associated Press analley sis found that anal sis found that 7800 bridges found need repairs or risk collapsing. On the list is the san mateo, golden gate and bay bridge. However. Caltrans says the majority of the states bridges in that category are caltrans performs inspections every two years to decide which bridges to repair or replace. Mt. Diablo state park is due to reopen because of last weeks massive wildfire. More than 3,000 acres burned. Its been fully contained. It was fully contained over the weekend. Calfire says crews will still be looking for hot spots. A lot of work remains to repair picnic area, rest rooms and trails. Investigators think target practice shooters started that fire. Firefighters are still battling wildfire in Yosemite National park. The rim has burned more than 256,000 acres. Its 84 contained. The fire destroyed the Berkeley Tuolumne camp. Full containment of the fire is expected by friday. In shasta county, firefighters have fully contained a fire that killed one man and destroyed almost 70 homes. This one started a week ago south of redding. It burned more than 8,000 acres. The cause of the fire, still under investigation. Ten minutes before 8 00. A vote by californias state assembly is ending years of disagreement over future development in lake tahoe. California and nevada have a long history of arguing over the best way to prosper from tahoes scenery. Nevada wants to build high density and taller buildings. California feels that would negatively affect the landscape. Last week the assembly let nevada move ahead with the plans. And that vote would mean good news for the north tahoe shuttle bus. This is the Second Season of the Pilot Project that runs buses between incline and sand harbor state park. About 15,000 people used the shuttle this year. During the last few weeks, the ridership dropped as the fire kept people away from the lake tahoe area. 7 51. Tal is back. The commute has been rough for almost everybody, especially highway 24. It really has been. Weve seen a lot of slow traffic. Highway 24 is still recovering from an earlier problem where they could not open the tunnel westbound in time. It was eastbound. But now were finally beginning to see traffic thats recovering in the area on westbound 24. Its a little slow in la fayette. But it has become a lot better now that both tunnels are open. We want to mention that the bay bridge has been steadiant slow and slow, 30minute plus delay at the toll plaza before you make it on the bridge. Labor talks resume this morning. 7 56 this is a live look at the new bay bridge where construction on Treasure Island is causing a whole new set of traffic problems for drivers, especially in the morning commute. New signs out there have been posted on the bay bridge warning drivers about the Treasure Island offramp. The chp says big rigs have been getting stuck on that offramp literally every day for the past two weeks. The new signs say that loads longer than 65 feet will not be able to make that turn. The chp says the problem is bigger trucks are being used to use to move loads to Treasure Island. Those people who have to take the exit have to go east and turn around all the way at the end of the bridge. Well, the chp is working with caltrans trying to fix the problem. They say better communication between caltrans and their construction crews, that will be the key to fixing this problem. Its been a good morning so far on wall street. New this morning, a police chase through two cities injured with a crash that sent an injured woman to the hospital and a car smashing into a liquor store. Ktvus Tara Moriarty is outside of the liquor store now to show us some of the damage and with more details about what happened. Tara . Reporter this is a pretty big chunk that the car took out of the liquor store. Theres a lot of brick that was taken out of the building here and the window was damaged. If we walk over here, we can show you that underneath this cone is where a traffic pole used to be. All of the electricity to this intersection was actually out for about seven hours until crews finally restored it about two hours ago. All of this unfolded at 11 00 last night. The car was a mangled mess after the car slammed. The store. Police pulled you him over at 108th and san leandro. As soon as officers got out of their patrol car, the officer sped off. Smashed into a car with a woman inside, knocked over the pole and crashed into the liquor store. Onlookers wonder why the driver would try to evade police on such a simple traffic stop. Were still investigating that part of it. Hes got some criminal history. So were looking at all of those factors. Reporter san Leandro Police arrested the man. Oakland police are handing the investigation into the crash. The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. This isnt the first time this has happened. Back out here live, cars have crashed into this store before, so frequently that the store added the barriers. You can see where the paint color is different where somebody crashed into here from before. Dont know if it did much good. We did talk to crews. Were continuing to follow the breaking news out of washington, d. C. Where shots were fired at the Washington Navy yard. This happened about 8 20. East coast time. Were hearing reports of up to ten people injured including two police officers. There are also reports that some of the victims may have died. We have a bit of a delay here but justin gray is live on the scene of the shooting to let us know whats happening there now. Justin . Reporter were set up right now here on m street in d. C. Several blocks from where the shooting took place. This is police say this is where police say they will be giving up an update on the situation. I just spoke with a woman in the cafeteria when the shots rang out. She heard three gunshots and then a few seconds later, several more. She said at that point, people just started running. At this point, police confirming with us that they do have multiple gunshot victims, as many as ten. The navy confirming there are facilities. A lot of conflicting information coming in as you can imagine, about how many families there are. Thats what were hoping to get cleared up here from police in the next few minutes. They are keeping everyone back. They have folks in the building and folks at the naval yard sheltering in place at the moment. Theyve moved everybody back several blocks from the navy yard. This is where a lot of the top command brass for the navy work, this big where it took place. 3,000 people working in that building. So again, police hoping to give us some very updated information here. They say its about 11 10. Any time during the next few minutes well get the information and bring it to you. Were following developing news in san jose where police are on the scene of a suspicious death. The body was discovered in a mobile home off north 4th street and east julian. Janine de la vega joins us with the story. Reporter good morning. The coroner just removed the body of a man found inside that rv that you see over there. It was parked here on 4th street. Police say its very messy inside and the man appeared to be homeless. But something found here caught the coroners eye. Now they are trying to determine if there is any foul play. A homeless woman alerted police around 3 40 this morning after she found a key left in the rv opened the door and found the body. Officers say they originally thought he died of Natural Causes because hes 80 years old. But after investigating more they found physical evidence inside the rv that leads them to believe that this is suspicious. After reviewing the body and looking at the situation, either the position of the body, certain things within the cabin of the mobile home, again, she made the determination that it seems suspicious. So err on the side of caution, she called the San Jose Police departments crime scene unit. Reporter the homicide lieutenant was notified and crime scene technicians came to the scene to collect evidence just as a precaution. The coroner was called to examine the body and an autopsy will determine an exact cause of death. At this point. Police are only calling this death suspicious since they havent determined that it was a homicide yet. As i mentioned, theyve already removed the body and the coroner has left. But now they have to wait for a tow truck to haul away the rv that you see parked there. That will be towed away to the polices evidence yard. And they will still go over it to see if they have to collect anything there in case its determined that a crime happened here. A friend said they were trying to avoid an earlier crash. Curiel leaves behind a wife and four children. The chp police say motorcycle fatalities jumped between 1998 and 2008. Police say the number of deaths went down in 2009 and 2010 but are up again. A federal report shows motorcyclists are about 128 times more likely to die than people in cars. 8 11. Closing arguments expected today in the penalty phase of the trial of 79yearold jose naso. Last month he was convicted of killing four Northern California women between 1977 and 1994. Hes also suspected of at least two more murders and is eligible for the death penalty. Lawrence Berkeley National laboratories planed expansion is on hold after it did not win a contract. They set aside a large portion of the hills for that contract. Now without the extra funding, the lab says it doesnt have the money to expand. The agreement calls for syria to provide a list of its chemical weapons within a week. Several sacramento High School Students are back home after being tranded in colorados floods. Students and their parents reunited yesterday. The students were at a ranch in colorado for a tendayfield trip. They were stranded for two days when the roads washed out. The highway briefly reopened for another round reopened and then another round of storms hit. Theres four main highways in that town. Three of them collapsed completely. We came home safe. Were all fine. Pretty good. Staff members say the students were never in danger because the remote ranch was on high ground. More details now on the flooding. At least two red cross volunteers from here in the bay area, they are there helping with the relief efforts and more may be headed that way. So they opened fire. The bullets missed him but hit two women. Broadknacks turned out be unarmed. Police describe him as emotionally disturbed. People in new jersey are rebuilding the boardwalk. On thursday night a fire began at an ice cream shop and quickly spread destroying four blocks and 50 businesses. This is the same area of the boardwalk destroyed and rebuild after superstorm sandy. Lidle benjamin was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed. Our reporter just talked to a student and a principal the principal about the deadly crash. Reporter good morning. School started about a half hour ago. Students were met with the grief counselors. Those grief counselors will be here throughout the day for people who need to talk to them as needed. 17yearold lidle benjamin was a passenger in a jaguar sedan when it crashed into a tree off Sterling Hill drive and hillcrest. The unidentified 19yearold driver of the car is reportedly at John Muir Medical Center with serious injures and is expected to survive. The investigation into exactly what happened continues. They say that speed played a role. We understand the driver of another car that may have been involved is cooperating with Antioch Police. With oaklands Police Department stretched thin, more people are turning to private security guards. The trend started here in the oakmoore neighborhood when people became concerned about a rash, a string of home burglaries and car breakins. A groom of about 300 or so homeowners got together and they decided they would share the cost of private patrols. Quads are on duty, reporting any suspicious activity and trying to deter wouldbe cils. According to one report, a lot of the local Security Companies are doing a lot more business in oakland these days. Entire neighborhoods are banding together to pray for the private security guards in sequoia hills neighborhood and in the maxwell park neighborhood. The list is growing. One homeowner told me this trend or private security is troubling. I dont think this is a good trend. I dont feel good about the trend. I think everyone is hoping this is a temporariry situation because temporary situation. The police have been stretched for quite sometime. And when they have to choose which to respond to, they will respond to situations that are more severe.
