Things have rotated north and off the coast, still lightning strikes being reported out to the farrahlons. Were still in line for the wraparound of clouds and maybe shurs showers. 56 to 58. 60s, 70s and 80s by noon. By then, partly cloudy. Maybe more showers tonight. 60s to some lower 90s today. Not the 100s we saw yesterday. Much, much cooler. A good 10, 15 degrees especially in the Higher Elevations and a rip roarin braze. Today it will be hot for some. Not as hot. Occasionally popup showers are coming from the sierra and the sacramento valley. A lot of is lifting out. Theres still plenty of activity that has to come through. Showers, sun. I think it would be more in the afternoon, evening. Tomorrow looks active for i think here as the low begins to move. 60s, 70s, 80s. Not the 100s from yesterday. Heres sal. We have lights out on the lower deck of the bay bridge that have been causing some people to in fact, if you look at this video, the lights go out on the far left. Its caused some people to question whats going on. As the traffic gets into San Francisco, it is not affected by this because, fortunately, its light enough. Some of the lights were also off on the lower deck of the bay bridge. Were looking at westbound bay bridge approach. This is normal for this time of the morning. Its backed up for about a 15 minute day. Fortunately, none of the light problems have been affecting the bridge. Were also looking at a problem in fremont. This problem on auto mall parkway, major crash Near Technology drive. Lets go live to ktvus Tara Moriarty, who is on the scene of have very serious crash. Tara . Reporter this looks pretty violent. If you take a look behind me, you can see the big rig is on its side. It does have diesel. Crews are a little bit concerned about that. Right now they are trying to figure out exactly how this crash unfolded. Joining me live is lieutenant fred bobit. Hes here to explain this. This is auto mall parkway. Can you tell us who was going which direction . We understand the big rig or tractortrailer was traveling eastbound on auto mall between technology coming up towards fremont boulevard. We believe currently right now that the big rig actually, as it was traveling eastbound jumped the Center Median and struck what you see is the white compact vehicle that we believe was traveling westbound. Reporter there was a woman in the car. Witnesses say she appeared to be in her 30s or something. Her head was actually out of the window and thats what saved her. That window was down or popped out . We will say that she was obviously transported to a local Trauma Center. Were hoping that she makes it. Right right now were not sure if thats how she survived. But we know she is at a Trauma Center right now. Reporter as far as the truck driver goes, it appears he only suffered a couple of scratches. Thats correct. Reporter so where does the investigation go from here . How long will this section of roadway be shut down . Well, as you can see, this is a pretty horrible collision. We believe it will be closed for 0 some time. Were think be maybe an hour, two hours right now. As soon as were able to open the roadway, well let you know. Reporter thank you for joining us. Breaking news just into our newsroom, a flight headed from Londons Heathrow airport to sfo this morning had to turn around after a mechanical issue with that plane. Sfo confirms united flight 900 returned to london but they say there was no serious risks to passengers. According to the website, the flight has been canceled for the day, so passengers will likely need to be booked on other flights to get to San Francisco. Developing news from san jose. This Morning Police are looking for suspects in a tripping shoot triple shooting at a vietnamese restaurant. It happened on alum rock avenue in East San Jose. Janine de la vega says police are now asking for the publics help. She joins us now from the scene. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Were going into the tenth hour that police have been here on the scene. This have this area roped off. When officers arrived, they say about 15 people were inside the restaurant. But they believe many more witnesses were inside who left and they would like to talk to them. Police say they were called to the restaurant and bar in East San Jose shortly after 10 00 last night of a they received a report that multiple gunshots were fired. Officers say the bullets came flying into the restaurant, startling customers. Three men were hit. One of them died from his injuries at the hospital. The other two received superficial wounds and will survive. At this opportunity, not exactly sure the motive of the shooting or any suspect information. Just that it appears that the rounds were fired from the outside into the establishment and at this opportunity, thats all we have. Reporter this morning, crime scene technicians collected evidence and took pictures of the bullet holes. Police say around nine shots were fired. From witnesses statements it appears the victims were innocent bystanders. Sources tell me friends of the man who died was an engineer. Police say the homicide victim is asian. He appears to be in his 40s. Again, there are theres no motive or no suspects that have been apprehended yet in this case. Reporting live from East San Jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7 07. Continuing coverage of the unusual bay area weather. Thousands of lightning strikes, about 1,000 reported overnight. We may see even more later today and tomorrow. Now, the threat of lightning has triggered a red flag warning. Its gonna stay in effect until tomorrow. Ktvus alex savidge is in pacifica now to tell us how calfire is responding to the potential of fires. Good morning, alex. Reporter well, good morning, dave. With all of the lightning strikes, firefighters were on high alert last night, but people here on the peninsula and across the bay area really enjoyed what was a spectacular light show last night. Let me show you some of the video here. This is video taken by a ktvu photographer down here in san mateo county. Lightning also reported further down the coast in pescadero and santa cruz county. Also some reports of light rain as well. According to the National Weather service, Mother Nature was busy last night. More than 11,000 lightning strikes were seen across the bay area and that is just since 8 00 last night. Although a majority of those strikes were out over the water. Now, while the lightning was fun to watch, all of that lightning had firefighters concerned. A red flag warning does remain in effect across Northern California with lightning and strong winds and high fire danger. At the Calfire Air Attack base at the Sonoma County airport, crews are ready to respond to any lightning sparked fire. Last night the thunderstorms actually forced one plane to turn around and return to the airport. Calfire, of course, has staffed reserve engines and brought in extra firefighters just in case the large fire does break out. We have additional engines staffed, we have additional staff on duty and station personnel on duty. If we do get lightning, were able to deal with those incidents appropriately. Reporter now that the thunderstorms have moved through, calfire crews plan to be back up in the air later today to respond to any fires that could break out. The red flag warning for Northern California remains in place through tomorrow. Although those thunderstorms have moved out over the water, they did so early this morning, the lightning has let up this morning, but nearsary the possibility of more lightning activity later on tonight. Volunteers will be a volunteer, right there, he will stay at the post from dawn to dusk until the red flag warning is lifted. 7 10. Right now, crews are battling at least 11 wildfires burning all across the state. Calfire considers nine of them major fires. Former pakistan president and army chief perves musharraf has been indicted on murder charges. The charges are in connection with the assassination of former pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto six years ago. Its the first time a former army chief has been charged with a crime. He took power in 1999 during a coup. He stepped down almost a decade later in disgrace. Hes entered a not guilty plea to the charges. 7 16. Cindy chavez will be officially sworn in tonight as the new Santa Clara County supervisor. Chavez was elected in a special lex on july 30th election on july 30th to replace the former supervisor who resigned after need pleading guilty to misusing public funds. Bob filner is believed to be working out a settlement with one of his accusers. He was spotted in public for the first time in three weeks. He entered the San Diego Administration building. Also there was gloria allred, representing one of the women suing filner and the city for sexual harassment. Its not clear if a possible resignation by filner is part of the settlement talks. A Sonoma County supervisor accused of driving to break into a womans home in his underwear is expected to return to work. He was arrested last month on suspicion of prowling and burglary. Its now up to Governor Brown to decide if california voters who vote by mail can find out if their bal lott was counted. Both houses approve the idea. If the governor signs it into law, every county would be required to check mailin voters. About half of the ballots last november were mailed in. An army judge is deliberating the sentence for bradie manning for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to wikileaks. Now, manning was convicted of violating the espionage act. One heading toward northern napa county it looks like into southernlake county. Middletown maybe right there. So theres still some active weather coming across from the sacramento valley. Well begin with a look at interstate 880 which actually doesnt look all that bad here at the coliseum as you are driving farther north, though, you will see slow traffic approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. At the toll plaza, its about a 25 to 30minute delay. Nothing unusual except if you are in the carpool lanes, then it looks good. Weve been looking at contra costa county. Highway 4 through antioch and 680 from concord to walnut creek is slow. Have a report of a ladder on appian. Watch for that. On 880 hayward, southbound traffic is slow from 238 heading down to union city. So is northbound. Weve had a couple of minor crashes on the freeway. We also have a crash in fremont. Lets go to Tara Moriarty on a major road in fremont where there was a very serious crash. Tara . Reporter well, the impact of this crash was so great, it sheared the top portion of the of the car off. Its light. Its sitting up on the sidewalk actually. Investigators believe the driver of that big rig jumped the median and hit the white car. We just got some pictures in from a neighbor who who heard the crash at 5 00 this morning. Police say the big rig driver was heading eastbound on auto mall parkway when for some reason he veered and hit the median. He hit the womans car. The woman was transported to a Trauma Center in life threatening condition. We sas sitting at she was sitting at angle. They said the reason she was alive was because of the window being down or it popped out. Her head was outside a little bit. Thats what saved her. Us that that whole part of the crash was completely crashed. Reporter the truck driver appeared to ruck away with a few scratches. Police are interviewing him right now. Fremont police say they will keep auto mall parkway blocked off from Technology Drive for about four hours. Thats because they need to complete their investigation and that truck has diesel fuel. The tank is resting on a tree there. They will have to call in hazmat crews to come and clean it up. Once again, four hours that this roadway will be shut down. Also new this morning, all lanes of northbound interstate 880 in san jose are back open after a rollover crash seriously injured a woman. It happened at 4 00 this morning near Stevens Creek boulevard. One of the cars flipped and landed on its roof trapping the driver inside. The woman was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The cause of the crash is still being investigated. And we have new information on a Home Invasion robbery that injured a woman at her pug home last night at her pittsburg home last night. Reporter we understand the female victim is expected to be okay. She was at home at the time along with her two young kids. At this time, the kids ages are 3 and 6. They were asleep at the time. When robert entered the home apparently through a second story window last night. We are hearing from police about what happened. They say it happened around 10 00 p. M. Last night. Again, the two suspects entered the home through a second story window. It remains unclear how they got to the second story. We talked to neighbors who say perhaps the trash cans were stacked. They demanded money from the from the woman and she later complied. She tried to reach the panic button on her alarm system and thats when there was a struggle. We reported there was the woman was pistolwhipped. There were no injuries at the scene. The woman was treated and released at a local hospital. Neighbors say they are shocked in such a quiet neighborhood. To this happen in we need a gate, i mean, its its scary because its real close to home. Reporter police also say a silver suv similar to a chevrolet was last seen leaving the area. Unfortunately, theres no clear cut suspect description as police say the suspects covered their faces with their hooded sweatshirts. Police say theres no motive at this time which is why they are asking anyone with information to call them. Were live here in pittsburg, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. With the opening of the new span of the bay bridge, its a stip closer. Over the weekend, crews finished installing steel shims. The permanent repair for the broken bolts thats not expected until december. In the meantime, later today, the Bridge Oversight Committee will give us an update on all of the construction that will take place before the bridge is closed next week. Now, ktvu news has also learned b. A. R. T. Will have 14 of the stations operating around the clock while the bay bridge is closed down. The b. A. R. T. Stations will stay open 24 hours a day, starting wednesday, august 28th. Overnight service will be offered once an hour to b. A. R. T. Riders all over the bay area. B. A. R. T. Will run some longer trains during the day with as many as ten cars. B. A. R. T. Will provide special service for weekend events including oakland as games. Some bay area commuters are looking ahead to the bay bridge closing down during the long holiday weekend. Im going up to oregon to visit family for the long holiday weekend. Baby drew was laid to rest on friday. So far no arrests have been made. A 30,000 reward is being offered in the case. And we have new information about the arrest of a surf instructor in santa cruz. Santa cruz police are now saying the investigation could be handed over to the federal government. 38yearold dylan griner is accused of making inappropriate advances and taking videos and photos of two teenaged girls. He was arrested on friday. Santa cruz police say theyve received calls from possible victims families living as far away as new york. Griner is expected in court tomorrow. 7 39. The california Highway Patrol released a report on that deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. Five women on their way to a Wedding Party were killed when the Lincoln Town Car they were riding in burst into flames. Investigators ruled the fire was an unforeseeable accident. And the limo driver will not face any criminal charges. He says hes still haunted by the memories of that night. Its painful. Every day is painful. Every minute is painful. Every minute it it reoccurs in my head about every day. The investigators also concluded the limo driver was not on a cell phone at the time of the fire as has been reported. Were fidding out more this morning about a deadly hitand run crash in san jose. 61yearold carlton ford was hit and killed saturday night by a pickup truck on alum rock avenue about 8 a that night. His 8 45 that night. His neighbors say he walked that same way every night. The chp are looking into whether this involves another accident of earlier. If i could bring him back, i sure could. Its horrible. How could anyone do that . Investigators say the truck was too dark to see the driver of the truck. But are looking for a 90s ford pickup truck. It has frontend damage. So temperatures will come down, i think a good 10, 15 degrees. By this afternoon, we could get more clouds, possible showers and another round of lightning. This the next 48 hours i think were in line. 50, and 60s instead of the 70s. Im gonna get out of the way so you can see. This is really impressive for august. You can see how this low is happened in, rotating a lot of the moisture. Were getting a drier air spot. However, that still doesnt stop some especially by the east bay and north bay. Theres a little cell trying to pop up to st. Helena and calistoga. Were not done. Kind of early for this to be rotating around. Its there. A lot of low clouds, fog, some sun. 60s by the coast. Heres sal. We have a lot of slow traffic out there even though were hitting the 8 00 hour right now. I want to show you that the toll plaza is getting a little bit better now. Its backed up to about the macarthur maze. The the metering lights are on. We also have slow traffic in San Francisco along northbound 101 approaching the lower deck of the bay bridge. Remember, the lights were out down there. Im not sure if that could be causing some of the slow traffic or if jits just slow getting into San Francisco and onto the lower deck of the bay bridge. I want to show you the south bay, we do have slow traffic on 101 northbound its very slow. 280 is getting into the act. People are pulling away from downtown into the valley and 85. This is partially due to earlier accidents there in the south bay. We also have a problem in fremont. We have a major crash thats happened hours ago. Ktvus Tara Moriarty is in fremont to tell us what happened and what lanes are closed. Tara . Reporter well, police are trying to figure out what caused this big rig driver to jump the median. Was headed this direction and slammed into the white car. The impact of this crash, it sheared the top of that tblit car off car right off. Police say the big rig driver was headed eastbound on auto mall parkway. He jumped the median, struck the womans car and slammed into a tree. She was transferred to a hospital in lifethreatening conditions. Officials are concerned about diesel fuel. Were concerned about hazmat with diesel. Currently right now we feel that everything is safe. Well bring a hazmat team out to make sure the removal is done properly. Reporter police are interviewing that truck driver. They are also serving the scene here surveying the scene, picking u the evidence. The picking up the evidence. The truck driver appeared to walk away with a few scratches. One person was killed. Two others were wounded last night on alum rock avenue in East San Jose. Ktvus janine de la vega says the police are asking for the publics help. You are back now with the latest from that scene. Janine . Reporter dave, i spoke to homicide detectives in the last 30 minutes. They still have not identified any suspects. Nobody actually witnessed who actually has seen the shooter. Theyve been here for the last ten hours gathering what they can for evidence. Police say shortly after 10 00 p. M. Last night, they received a report of multiple gunshots fired near the restaurant on alum rock and capital avenue officers say 15 people were inside the restaurant. Three men were shot. All were rushed to the hospital where one died this morning from his injuries. The other two received superficial wounds and will survive. Police say after speaking to witnesses, it appears that whoever pulled the trigger did so from outside of the restaurant. We are tea still in the preliminary part of the investigation. Its lard to say if someone will come forward and give us information. Reporter Police Say Nine shots were fired. Theyve been taking photographs of the damage. At this point, theres no motive in the shooting. Its unknown if the restaurant was targeted. The victims identity has not been released. But sources tell me that his friends on scene say that he was an engineer and just out enjoying drinks with friends. Police say he was asian and appears to have been in his 40s. Back out here live, you can see this occurred in a strip mall. Theres another restaurant and a cleaning place next door, and those establishments have not been able to open up. Even more is forecast for later today and tomorrow. The continued threat of lightning has triggered a red flag warning that will remain in effect until tomorrow for much of the bay area. Right now, the National Weather service is still saying that theres lightning that is coming down just offshore here. Just off the coast of the bay area. About 150 miles or so offshore. Theyve had over 100 or so lightning strikes within the past couple of hours. Last night, that was the real big show, folks here on the peninsula and across the bay area watched as the sky just lit up. Heres video taken by a ktvu photographer in san mateo county. Lightning reported further down the coast in pescadero and reports of light rang as well. According light rain as well. According to National Weather service, there violent been 11,000 lightning strikes since last night at 8 00 around the bay area. Most strikes were out over the ocean. People i talked to this morning, here in pacifica say the light was show certainly gun certainly fun to watch. Enjoyed what i saw drew the drapery not the drapery, the shades. My cat didnt like it. Reporter but the downside to this unusual weather, high fire danger and a red flag warning remains in effect around Northern California with lightning and strong winds expected. At the Calfire Air Attack base at the Sonoma County airport, crews are there ready to respond to any lightning sparked fires that could break out. Calfire has staffed reserve engines and brought in extra firefighters just in case of a large fire. That red flag warning remains in place until tomorrow. Tomorrow, the thunderstorms and lightning have moved offshore but the forecast does call for the possibility of another light show later on tonight. The station is 4400 feet above Santa Clara County. Right now, fire crews all over california are battling at least 11 firefighters. Calfire says nine of them are major. More than 6,000 firefighters are being called in. The latest yesterday was Sequoia National forest in kern county. Lightning started it. One of the biggest fires burning northeast of auburn, in the Tahoe National forest. It started nine days ago. Its burned more than 15,000 acres. A red flag warning goes into effect for this area w right now, the a area. Right now, the fire is 53 contained. The cause is still under investigation. Firefighters battling a wildfire in butte county, south of chico. It started friday. Its burned about 2100 acres. This morning, firefighters issued another evacuation warning a day after getting some after letting some of the empeople some of the people go back home. The fire is 64 contained. One of the main entrances to Yosemite National park has been closed because of a fire. This one started over the weekend. But it crossed state route 120 yesterday, shutting it down in both directions. Drivers are being rerouted to state route 140 or 41. About 800 acres have burned so far. Police once again warned protesters they were trespassing and asked them to leave. One person was arrested. Protesters have been carmed on the camped on the post office steps since july 27th trying to block the Postal Service from selling the historic building. A woman in danville was seriously hurt after being hit by a car while crossing the street. This happened around 9 00 last night on camino near Sycamore Valley park. The investigation shut down the road for several hours. Police say the driver stopped and is cooperating. They say its too early to know what caused the crash. Theres a lot of details that our traffic investigators will look at. They will look at the time of day. They will look at lighting. A lot of those indicators, indicating minor crashes and most of them have been cleared but driving into the Silicon Valley right now will be very tough on almost every major freeway. If we move the maps to the peninsula, fewer incidents but a lot of slow traffic on 101 northbound on san mateo and southbound through palo alto and across the bay, 880 is improving a little bit as you drive through. Also this morning at the toll plaza, thats backed off. Were thats backed up. Were seeing an improve at the pay gates. It looks like san mateo bridge, the road sensors are firing up. Not sure what that is about. We dont have any accidents reported. A woman, with children, ages 3, and 6 they were asleep. When two robbers entered the home through a secondstory window. Its unclear how the robbers were able to climb up the second story. Police say it all happened before 10 00 p. M. Last night. When the suspects entered the second story window, they confronted the woman asking for monetary items. She complied but at one point she attempted to reach for the panic button on her homes alarm system. When that happened, thats when a struggle occurred. Police say the victim was hit on her face and upper body. She was able to dial 911 when the suspects fled through the front door. We spoke to neighbors who say they were shocked that this happened in a quiet neighborhood. It brings about a little fear to me because, you know, its a very quiet neighborhood. We all, you know, are working families, go and come and you you have to be safe. I always tell my daughters, make sure everything is locked up. You may not know who is coming through checking windows and doors. Reporter police say a silver suv similar to a chevrolet was last seen leaving area. Unfortunately, though, no clear cut description as police say the suspects covered their faces with the hoods of their sweatshirts. Police also say theres no motive at this point. The healdsburg city council, doing something unusual. They are taking a stand on something other than a local issue. The city is on record. They are supporting a federal ban on assault weapons. The Council Voted 41 to support senator Dianne Feinsteins proposed ban. If approved, that law would ban military style weapons. United states had a ban on assault weapons, but it was allowed to expire in 2004. After a yearlong undercover operation, police in new york arrested 19 people and they broke up a major gun operation. Police say the defendants made several trips to new york city from north and South Carolina with as many as 14 illegal weapons at a time. Police say they used economy bus lines to transport those weapons. They include assault weapons, a fully automatic machine gun, and handguns. Tonight the Napa City Council will talk about a recommend eighth from the police chief recommendation from the police chief to ban medical marijuana dispensaries. That starts the evening of wednesday, august 28th. And ktvu news has learned that b. A. R. T. Plans to have 14 of its stations operating around the clock during the fiveday bay bridge closure. The b. A. R. T. Stations will remain open 24 hours a day starting the night of august 28th. They will offer overnight service to the 14 stations once an hour between midnight and 4 00 a. M. And b. A. R. T. Will run longer trains during the day when the bridge is closed for as many as ten scars. B. A. R. T. Will provide special service for weekend events including the oakland as game. Ktvu. Were told by police it appears that nine bullets were fired into the restaurant but nobody saw the shooter. Police say shortly after 10 00 last night, bullets came flying inside the restaurant on alum rock avenue near capital. Officers say it appears who of fired the shots was outside. Three men were hit by bullets and rushled to the hospital rushed to the hospital. One of them dayed at 2 00 a. M. , the other had super fish am wounds and will survive. We spoke to one witness who heard the gunfire but didnt want to dwiv her name give her name. Two or three shots. At first we didnt Pay Attention to it. And then the five shots later, we knew it was five shots. No word what led up to the gunfire. The victims were told by police, they were all asian we are ally told by police the victims, were told by police are all asian. It appears that the victims were all innocent bystanders.
