Lets go back to the desk. Thank you, sal. An investigation is underway after a woman says she was attacked near Santa Clara University. This happened about 1 30 this morning. Ktvus janine de la vega is following this developing news from santa clara and joins us now live. Good morning. Reporter good morning, tori. This happened a couple of blocks away from the university. A lot of students live in this area. We dont know if the victim in this case was a student but it happened near main and lexington. Police tell me that the University Police are aware of this incident and plan on cautioning students to be careful. Officers say this happened at 1 30 this morning. The woman had been out with a group of friends near a 7 slrn 1 with a 7 eleven and dedecided to walk decided to walk home alone when she was grabbed from behind. And the man told her, dont talk, dont scream, she kicked him in the groin and he ran away. She wasnt able to get a good description. There are no indications that weapons were used in this battery. The police used k9s and a scent led them near the homestead and la fayette. But they lost the accident. Police believe dont believe this is the same man suspected of raping a woman at kylie at homestead. Investigators say thats because there was nothing sexual in nature in this attempted in this battery. Instead, they are looking into the possibility of this may have been an attempted theft. They are still working on the motive. They are not ruling anything out. But at this point, theres no active search. They would still like to find the plan who did this, though. Officers confirmed theyve made an arrest in the campus attack on tuesday night. Police are expected to release more details later today. The 22yearold victim is still recovering after his head was bashed on the sidewalk near the science building. Officers say it appears the victim and attacker knew each other. The victim was not a student and had no sees to the no ties to the university. Police are searching for suspects in a deadly shooting last night. Police found two men shot in a car on summersville road. One man died. The other is critically hurt. Ktvus Claudine Wong has been out there since 4 30. What are the police saying now, claudine . Reporter well, it appears, dave, that the two victims were simply driving on the street when the shots were fired. If you take a look behind me. This is delta fair road. You can see glass on the roadway. Theyve opened the roadway. And the number of cars, it gives you an indication of how busy it is here. It was busy last night at 7 45, when all of this happened. I want to show you what happened out here when police were gathering evidence. This roadway was shut down until about 90 minutes ago. Again, this is where police say the shooting happened. It appears at this point, that these two men were driving down the street when another car drove up and the person or persons inside started shooting. The victims didnt stop, though, even both of them were hit by budget, by bullets. The. Suspects drove away near somersville and thats where the officers found them. One man is dead. The other is in in the hospital in Critical Condition. Police are still trying to notify the victims family so they dont want to release other information. We expect more information later today. Were being told the man had ties to antioch. We have a description. Suspect vehicle. Its described as a fourdoor honda or chevy. We do not know the model but we can tell you, its gold in color. We know this the investigators have been busy connecting interviews all morning. They were out all night gathering evidence. They are still trying to put that back all together. They are hoping anyone with any information either witnesses or people who knew the victim will come forward and help them solve this case. Police find the body of a man who had been shot and killed about midnight on 80th avenue near international boulevard. So far no word yet about a suspect. New this morning, investigators in San Francisco want to know what caused this earlymorning fire in chinatown. It started about 3 00 this morning at a souvenir shop on clay street. Not far from the financial district. Theres no word of anyone being hurt. That fire caused about 5,000 damage. It is 7 06. To our continuing coverage of the threat of another b. A. R. T. Strike. Snowdens father now hopes to obtain a visa to see his son. The u. S. Urged russia to turn over snowden but there is no extradition treaty between the two nations. Meanwhile, happening today the nsas controversial Surveillance Programs will be topic one when lawmakers including senator Dianne Feinstein are scheduled to meet with president obama. Well, todays meeting comes after a report in Britains Guardian newspaper about another secret nsa program. The nsa uses a program called xkeyscore to monitor massive amounts of internet information including email, Facebook Messages and web searches. That program came to light due to those documents leaked by Edward Snowden. The key to keyscore its a program used by the nsa to collect all Internet Activity, everything they can collect. The nsa says only americans who have had contact with foreign targets with monitored. The head of the nsa was heckled in las vegas. Hackers heckled him at a cybersecurity conference. If you disagree with what were doing, then you should help twice as much. Read the constitution i have. You should, too. Now, nsa director Keith Alexander agreed to speak at the conference in las vegas about what he called misconceptions about the nsas Surveillance Program. He said the surveillance disrupted more than 550 terrorist plots. The hecklers accused him of violating the constitution. Happening now in washington, d. C. , the house energy and Commerce Committee is holding a hearing, this hearing right now on the Affordable Care act. The attorney for san diegos mayor said the city should foot the bill for his legal fees in the sexual harassment. The City Council Unanimously voted to deny the mayor money for his legal defense. Thats joshua barre, a forensic scientist giving his testimony about what happened when the girls were found. During the hearing prosecutors plan to bring to light the activities with the girls using diaries. Barb johnson took the stand and talked about the victims about what they went through. She said i was several times and every time he found out i was pregnant, he would starve me and punch me in the stomach. We are expecting more of that testimony and victim impact statements. Under the plea deal, he agreed to plead guilty in exchange for the death penalty. He couldle spend life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 1,000 years. New this morning, the federal government investigating reports of alleged unethical actions by lawyers in connection with the Asiana Airlines crash. The ntsb is checking reports that lawyers have been soliciting the victims. Now, u. S. Law bans lawyers from approaching passengers in the first 45 days after a crash. The ntsb says the complaints involve websites and the lawyers personally soliciting passengers. A burning candle may have caused a house fire in concord. It happened last night about 7 00 on bonacase street. Luckily, no one was hurt. But the house were told was a total loss. Firefighters say the fire apparently started when a candle ignited curtains in a back room. 7 36. Garbage collection rates are going up in San Francisco today. The average cost for three 32 gallon bins jumped from 28 a month to 34. Customers, though, can offset the hike by switching to a smaller 20gallon garbage bin and a larger 64gallon recycling bin. The option is designed to help San Francisco reach steer row waste by 2020. Monday, night monday night, the palo alto are considering putting a stop to people sleeping in their cars on the streets. Opponents plan to rally before the hearing. They say the measure criminalizes the homeless. I mean, the temperatures came in about average, though. The mean temperature was 60. 1. The mean maximum temperature 66. 63. 66point a. You are right there. The minimum temperature, 54. 1 was the average. So very close here. I think the big story was the fog. Normal high is 67 degrees. The last time it was 70 degrees or higher in San Francisco was the supply when it was 75. Not today. 65. Still slightly below average but at least starting to get some sun. The breeze i mean, from San Francisco, out to the Altamont Pass in fairfield, theres a good breeze kicking unof the lows i up. A woman in her 20s finished hanging out with her friends close to a 7 11 near the campus. Officers say while she was walking home alone on lexington near main, thats when a man grabbed her from behind, told her not to scream. Police say she fought back. She kicked him in the groin and ran away. Police dogs picked up a accident at lexenton but it ended there. I think a little more security, a little more cautious eye, a little less carefree attitude. Police dont believe this incident is related to a rape that hasnted last friday at an apartment complex at homestead and kylie. His recovery will take several months. 8 23. The permanent fix for the broken bolts on the new bay bridge is well underway. This crucial project is taking place miles away from the bridge. Ktvu news went inside the plant in vallejo where the socalled seismic saddles are being made. Workers are carefully bending special 3inch thick still plates into something that looks like a saddle. The saddle cable system will be sealed and surrounded by concrete and a casing to complete this permanent fix. Once you put them in, you pull the tendons tight, stretch them down, lock them off. And then it will be sealed and never exposed again. Theres still a chance a span of the eastern bridge could be opened much earlier if they adopt a temporary fix now being tested. Lets go to sal.
