there. many areas are without power. they've given us an estimate and say the power should be restored by about -- by about 8:30. so another hour and a half. we'll have more from the scene coming up at 7:01. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. an arson investigation on the peninsula, a suspicious fire caused major damage to a redwood city apartment complex and left dozens of people homeless. lorraine blanco joins us live. you just spoke to a fire victim. >> reporter: yes, i did. i just spoke to a boy who escaped the fire this morning. he said bad things have happened to cars in this area before but nothing like this. you can see the investigation is still going on behind me where you see those charred cars in a carport. the battalion chief say there is a couple of things that make this suspicious. a few cars began to burn at one time. two units were destroyed here. another six units have water damage. this man says he grabbed his two sisters and department have time to take anything else. >> i ran outside. three cars blew up at the same time. and then i -- i was standing in the middle and i yelled to everybody, get out! and my mom -- i told my mom to call the firefighters. >> reporter: sadly, jose also told us a neighbor's dog died in the fire. the american red cross is helping families with food and shelter. no injuries reported. 27 people got out safely. five cars were destroyed. they say more cars have some type of damage. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. a boy was shot and killed right in front of an elementary school in san jose. police say the boy was walking outside of rocket mosaic elementary school when someone in a car opened fire. he was shot several times and died at the scene. this happened at 6:20 yesterday evening. investigators remained on the scene in the night. neighbors say the area is known for gang activity. there's still no motive in the shooting and no arrests have been made. the parents are clinging to hope -- the parents of sierra lamar are clinging to hope their daughter is alive. they will be announcing that they are raising the reward. there will be an announcement about how the reward has changed and the criteria. neighbor nurses are getting ready to strike. tara moriarty is outside of alta bates summit center. there will be a picket line there. >> reporter: that's right. you can see them walking in circles there. they just started chanting here. more than 4400 nurses expected to be on the picket lines for a one-day strike throughout the bay area. one of the hospitals in oakland. their contract expired last summer. neighbors say they are upset because their company wants to take away large portions of their long-standing contracts. >> they are taking away from the nurses our benefits and what we already have. we know for a fact that the hospital corporations did not take a hit with the recession. they are taking advantage of this -- of this opportunity when people are down. >> reporter: now, a sutter health advertisement says nurses on average make $136,000 a year. >> the union is asking for new costly benefits like double- digit wage increases and free healthcare for life that would increase the cost of healthcare by thousands of dollars. >> reporter: now, the hospital says it will not be making any comment until 9:00 this morning. sutter has hired replacement nurses but they had to do so for five days. so when these nurses get off strike, they won't able to return to their jobs right away. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, tara. here is a map of the hospitals that are affected by this one- day walkout. three alta bates summit facilities in oakland and berkeley. mills in bur langton and -- in burlington and san mateo. sutter delta in antioch, sutter solano in vallejo and novato community hospital. nurses are walking out of petaluma community hospital, which, by the way, is not sutter owned. well, the controversial project to revamp a vallejo park is due to be completed this weekend. last summer, neighbors camped out for three months. they were protesting the project because they believe that park includes an ancient burial ground. the group left when the park district craps planned for new bathrooms and handicapped parking. however, some of the activities are still concerned about some of the trees out there. they plan to revisit this saturday. we want to check in with sal again regarding the power lines. i imagine that's causing some power problems. >> that's light, if you are driving toward the government building. this power line came down. not sure how it did. but we did see the broken power line between winton and amador street. that street is blocked off by hayward police. the power is out for a lot of residents in hayward. these day your power is out and you get -- these days if your wow is out and you -- if your power is out and if you have a friend who lives in this area of claudine wong, channel 2 news. an overnight fire in oakland left a house badly damaged. the fire occurred on wadine place. it started around 2:45. firefighters had problems right away. even though they acted quickly. this home is now unlivable. >> smoke and flames coming from the front. it was under control approximately in ten minutes. at this point, the fire is under investigation. the firefighters tell us, no one was inside at the time. no one was -- this was a vacant house. the red cross will be calling on anyone who did live there. the san francisco fire chief is now questioning pg&e's response to a natural gas explosion that sparked a big fire. it happened yesterday afternoon on san bruno avenue in the portola neighborhood. a gas line ruptured while a welder was doing work under construction. the gas line -- >> pg&e was trying to determine the area where the shut off needed to be. it look longer than i like, yeah. >> i think they need to give an explanation as to why so long. >> reporter: the workers arrived on the scene in 0 minutes. they could not immediately stop the leak because of the flames. the construction worker suffered minor injuries. the bureau of victim number one gave raw testimony. sandusky watched and listened, observers say, without emotion, as the talk -- accuser told the jury "at first he would kiss me on the forehead good night and then on the cheek and then rubbing my back." he said his hands rubbed underneath his shorts and then he would put his mouth on my privates." mcqueary says he reported the incident where he saw sandusky showering with a boy to the officials but not police. prosecutors made new ailbations that a penn state administrator kept a file of the reported activities and prosecutors say gary schultz, a former vice president, allegedly withheld the file during the investigation. they say e-mails contradict what schultz and curley told the jury. both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges of perjury. we've heard from vick number ten. we now know that individual's foster mother is now on the stand. if you remember the assistant football coach who gave that testimony who gave his testimony, well, his father if -- well, his father was there. we're hearing more details about what victim number 10 happened between him and sandusky. the victim, 5 years old, married,ly wife is -- the victim 55 >> reporter: well, clave a, forensic man from the san mateo county sheriff's department arrived here moments ago. the investigation is going on behind this alley where you can see the charred remains of several cars. investigators say the fire started here, with up to five cars bumping at the sale time. redwood city police say the flames spread from 12:30 a.m. it destroyed 12 unis. the other units have smoke and fire damage. one fire victim says he is sad because his neighbor's chihuahua didn't make it. >> when the guy tried to get him out, he hid under the bed and he just died there. >> reporter: the american red cross is helping families with food and shelter at a nearby community center. no injuries reported. 27 people got out safely on their own. as for their cars, five are a complete loss on the -- almost a dozen cars have some type of fire damage this morning. two people were arrested by san francisco police for a suspected arson at a muni station. now, it happened around 4:00 this morning at the castro muni station at market and castro. no one was hurt. service was not affected. arson investigators rushed to the scene. they are looking into what may have caused the fire. well, san jose police say, several apparently unreason lated assaults have one -- unrelated assaults have one thing in common -- none of the victims will cooperate with police. in each case, investigators say the victims would not describe the suspect or say what -- or say what may have prompted the attack. all of the victims are expected to survive. happening now, nurses from 11 bay area hospitals are out on the picket lines. nurses walked off the job about an hour ago. >> reporter: they are really getting going right now. they are chanting and they've beenened haing out -- they've been handing out these fliers saying we're in the same boat you are. let's all stick together. moor than 4400 nurses now on strike throughout the bay area. i know -- how are you -- how you are and the family holding up? >> better these days. >> you've been watching live a press conference for sierra lamar. they've increased the reward money from $25,000 to $35,000. they are still not giving up. they are continuing to have searches to go out and look for her even though there is a person who has been charged with her diking -- kidnapping and killing, antolin garcia- torres. claudine wong is down there at the press conference and will have more for us later on on ktvu. 8:36. a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in san jose yesterday right in front of an elementary school. police say the boy was walking outside, rocket -- at rocketship mosaic elementary school when someone began shooting. the victim was shot several times and he died at the scene. this happened at 7:20 yesterday evening. a southern california teacher was found dead in her classroom. her students found her body yesterday morning when a security officer opened their middle school classroom in victorville. the security officer quickly escorted the officer out of the room. authorities say the 40-year-old teacher most likely died from natural causes. they are got -- they are the -- they are not exactly sure how she died and they hope an autopsy will answer all of their questions. funeral services will be held for tarhonda jones. a warrant has been issued for her boyfriend. police say he should be considered armed and dangerous. family and friends of the young women will gather for a private viewing laker on this afternoon. 8:38. happening right now, thousands of bay area nurses are walking picket lines at several locations. tara moriarty has been -- has more. >> reporter: they are saying that sutter has been getting top dollar but they say their patients and nurses are being left behind. >> what do we want?
